It Was A Gold Rush At Holabird’s Western Americana Collections’ Four-Day Auction Items From East And West Coast Sold Holabird Western Americana Collections’ Gold Rush Sale, held March 15 to 18, online and in Reno, Nev., lived up to the billing. An outstanding 36-coin “Harts Coins of the West” set of gold coins sold for $41,572, and a solid gold goose egg made in 1982 and engraved “one pound troy +/- Fine Gold / 999.9 / 1 of 87” finished at $24,100. The “Harts Coins of the West” set of 36 gold coins (or tokens) is a colorful commemoration of all U.S. gold rush locales and features unusual denominations, such as Pinch, DWT and Expo. The coins range in grade from MS 63 to MS 66 and make for an impressive visual, 36 pieces of privately minted, golden art. The

maker, M.E. Hart, is believed to be businesswoman Mary Hart. The solid gold goose egg is an artisan’s piece made by Phoenix jeweler George Villa of Goldcraft Jewelers Inc., in February 1982 for a client who envisioned marketing the golden eggs. He abandoned the idea once he realized the cost to produce just one egg was over $1,000. The eggs were hand-hammered and crafted to goose egg size, each one weighing 12.02 troy ounces. Fittingly, the auction was a celebration of America’s major gold rushes, from Georgia and North Carolina to California, a four-day auction event that featured hundreds of lots in a wide array of collecting categories. The headliner was the Al Adams collection. Adams’ specialty was an area few people even know about, The 1897 broadside for the V&T (Virginia & the Georgia and North Carolina gold Truckee) Railroad, advertising prices for rushes of 1799 through the 1840s. It bringing passengers from Reno to Carson began with the discovery of a single City (Nev.) for the Corbett-Fitzsimmons fight, gold nugget in North Carolina in 1799. Nearly three decades passed before sold for $1,625. substantive gold discoveries were made in North Carolina and, to a larger extent, Georgia. “We had a record 3,439 registered bidders from the several live bidding platforms, which made the sale The Munckton Gold and Silver Mining Company stock certificate popular,” said Fred (Dunderberg Lode, Mono County, Calif.) for 55 shares, issued to Holabird of Holabird James Fraser on Dec. 9, 1870, in Carson City, Nev., sold for $1,125. Lancaster’s agricultural heritage is visible in its landscape, not just in the fields, but in the physical structures as well. One of the first buildings constructed by European settlers for their new communities was a mill to grind grain, and mills remained an important part of Lancaster County’s economy throughout the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Join the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) on a tour of historic mills of Lancaster County, including the last two operable water powered grist mills in the county, on Saturday, June 9, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Grist, or grain grinding mills, were the predominant type of mill, producing various types of flour as the main product. At one stop along the trip, the complete milling process will be demonstrated. At least 314 water-powered grist mills operated in Lancaster County, found on streams and rivers of all
sizes. “Even on streams so small they are easily crossed by merely jumping,” notes tour leader Martin Keen. By the mid-19th century, steam power became readily available, and mills no longer had to be located along a stream for power. Besides grist mills, there were also sawmills, oil mills, fulling mills, textile mills, gun barrel boring mills, and more. All the various types of mills will be discussed during the tour. Registration costs $70 for LMHS members and $85 for nonmembers. Tickets can be purchased by calling 717-393-9745 or by visiting www.lmhs.org. This trip is not handicapped accessible. Touring all floors of the mills will require the use of stairs. Tours begin and end at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, located at 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, Pa.

Price’s book contains a chapter on Rock Ford’s Gen. Edward Hand. After the lecture, Price will have copies of his book available for purchase and signing. Price is an historical interpreter for the Friends of Washington Crossing Park and leads guided tours focused on the American Revolution and other historical aspects of Washington Crossing Historic

Redefining The Concept Of Art In The Collectibles Marketplace By Shawn Surmick When most people think of art, they tend to think of extremely valuable paintings created by some of the most famous artists who ever lived. Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, and Claude Monet may all come to mind. Mention contemporary art and you are bound to encounter differing opinions on known pop artists like Andy Warhol. Art is often thought to have a lot of value on the secondary market thanks in part to the news media’s reporting on regular record-breaking sales that occupy the top tier of the art world. Ironically, the vast majority of art sold is not populated by the likes of
Rembrandt and Leonardo da Vinci. Many people praise different types of art for different reasons. I know many comic book collectors who aspire to own some original high-quality artwork from their favorite comic book artists. It is this fascination with owning original comic art that is causing demand for top-tier comic book artists like Todd McFarlane and Jack Kirby to continue to set new auction records. The same can be said for original “Magic the Gathering artwork produced during the game’s infancy in the early to late 1990s and beyond. “Magic the Gathering is a collectible trading card game that plays like an intricate game of chess using trading cards that feature incredibly detailed art set in fantasy
worlds. When the game was produced back in the early 1990s, highly skilled artists actually hand-painted a lot of the original game cards by first creating a canvas-sized painting. Since the rise of digital art and the advancement of computer-aided design, these original pieces of art have become sought after on the secondary market, assuming you can even find one for sale. A lot of well-known “Magic the Gathering artists have websites set up where enthusiasts can order less-expensive prints of their most popular pieces of art. Most of these prints are hand-signed and numbered and produced in limited quantities so that they maintain some degree of value on the secondary market. Not to be outdone by original comic book art, Marvel
and DC Comics both license their full line of comic book characters to be used by digital artists and turned into limited-edition prints. Most of these prints are then sold through well-known collectible manufacturers like Sideshow Collectibles and through comic book stores throughout the country. While none of these will ever have the value of an original Todd McFarlane Spider-Man sketch, or even most lesser-known comic artists’ original works, they have shown to have steady demand on the secondary market since most are produced in extremely low quantities (usually only in the hundreds of units). Even popular video games are not immune to the growing trend of collectible art prints. In 2011, native-born
the hottest video game franchises that are not simply taken directly from the games themselves. Most of the art they sell is quite affordable, with most prints selling for about $100 to $120 each unframed. With the rise in high-quality art prints available today, collectors and enthusiasts have a lot of options when looking for unique ways to decorate their favorite room or office. It is mind-boggling to see just how many different Continued on page 4

licensed art prints are being released on an ongoing basis. Collectors who are unable to get a print of their favorite comic character are often better off being patient, as the same character is released again and again in different poses, costumes, and environments. These kinds of limitededition art prints tend to sell the best and feature the best return when they are sold on the secondary market, but the trend is unlikely to continue as manufacturers continue to give eager fans a healthy dose of new limited material almost each and every month. This all begs the question as to whether the trend of collecting limited-edition art prints based on video game properties or comic book characters is here to stay.
Growing up in the 1980s and 1990s, if you wanted a “Sonic the Hedgehog” poster or a Nintendo poster, respectively, you were negated to your local department store where for $5.99 you got a cheap, massproduced poster that you unwrapped and pinned to your bedroom door. There was no high cost of framing or need to use archival materials. No one cared about the $5.99 they spent on a poster at KMart, but, incidentally, some of these mass-produced posters now have some value on the secondary market (more on that in an upcoming article). It will be interesting to see what happens in the world of limited-edition art prints that has successfully seeped into the hearts and wallets of pop culture collectors everywhere. Is this trend going to continue,

“Sticking Their Necks Out: Mid-Century Giraffe Figurines”
PUBLIC AUCTION
Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century Cats are cute. Dogs, devoted. Hamsters, according to some folks, hilarious. But nowadays, the competition is gargantuan. Literally. Running neck-and-neck in the race for America’s most adorable animal is a towering competitor: the giraffe. Averaging 18-plus feet in height (the tallest species on the planet), the giraffe is what zoologists call a “charismatic megafauna.” In other words, a
really big creature guaranteed to win hearts. Maybe it’s those long, long legs. That long, long neck. The long, long eyelashes. Or that long, long (about 18 inches) tongue. Whatever the reason, giraffes have been turning heads since time immemorial. The Greeks dubbed them “camelopardalis,” assuming the animals to be a camel/leopard hybrid (today, a giraffe-like constellation still carries that name). Our modern word, “giraffe,” is Arabic for “fast walker.” With their loping gait, giraffes certainly qualify. Accurately depicting the unique aspects of the giraffe is a tall order, but artists have been taking a dab at it for ages. The Kiffians of ancient Africa created a giraffe rock engraving (it’s full size, the world’s largest). Charles X, France’s king in the early 19th century, dotted his palace with numerous giraffe paintings in

Salvador Dali, the surrealist artist of the mid-20th century, found giraffes a favorite subject for his brush, complementing their natural allure by adding burning manes. (Dali dubbed his creations “masculine cosmic apocalyptic monsters,” evidently intending that as a compliment.) Equally aflame with creativity (although a bit more subtle in expressing it) were the many other mid-century artisans drawn to these tall drinks of water. First off were the toymakers. Their work ranged from inexpensive cuddlers filling bargain bins at dime stores nationwide to the plush charmers created by Germany’s Steiff company. These are high-end,
handmade, and distinguished by Steiff’s trademark “button in ear.” For grown-up kids, ceramic and glass designers offered a generous grabbag of “giraffanalia” (the collectors’ term for such items). The simple, graceful lines of the giraffe, coupled with its skyline-grazing

Beadwork And Prehistoric Art Drive Cowan’s Successful $1.4 Million American Indian And Western Art Auction piece for five minutes, sending the lot past its estimate of $10,000-$15,000 estimate before selling for $45,000. As it turned out, the only item from the collection that would top the first lot was the very last Sorgenfrei piece to be offered, a slate cylindrical eyed fantail birdstone. Prehistoric art collectors had been buzzing about the piece for days as more and more had the opportunity to preview it in person. When the action finally appeared to die down, a new floor bidder jumped in from the back of the room, casually standing over the glass case the birdstone was displayed in. After a few more exchanges, the new

An A’aninin (Gros Ventre) beaded hide war shirt sold for $55,200. It’s a great time to be an American Indian and Western art consignor.” The day began with the final installment of the Jan Sorgenfrei collection of prehistoric art. An avid collector, Sorgenfrei (Ohio, 1942-2012) was the owner of Painter Creek Auction Service and Old Barn Auction, specializing in Native American artifacts, mostly from the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes regions. This collection not only represented many of the finest examples of their respective types, but was also a testament to the wonderful creations of
prehistoric art created in this archaeologically rich area. “It’s a little bittersweet to see this collection go,” said Farnand. “Of course we’re happy these incredible pieces did so well and have found their ways to collectors who appreciate their beauty and history. It’s just a little sad to think we will not get to catalog any more of these wonderful little birds, though.” In a sign of what was to come, the very first lot of the auction, an elongated slate fantail birdstone, saw a half dozen floor bidders and two phone bidders vie for the

The final opportunity to acquire a piece from one of the most revered prehistoric art collections and a remarkable assortment of beadwork drove a record number of bidders to Cowan’s April 6 American Indian and Western Art Auction. A capacity crowd in Cowan’s Cincinnati, Ohio, salesroom vied with nearly 500 bidders bidding over the phone and online for well over six hours on the way to a $1.4 million day (including a 20 percent buyer’s premium). All told, the auction featured 689 bidders, which is a new high mark for a Cowan’s American Indian and Western Art auction. “As soon as the consignments started coming in for this auction last fall, we knew that we were going to have a big auction, but a lot of these prices were beyond our wildest hopes,” said Danica Farnand, Cowan’s director of American Indian and Western Art. “Today showed that not only is the market rebounding, but it’s growing. We saw 116 new bidders in this auction with a record number of bids coming over from Europe, particularly France.

day was beadwork. The highlight of the category was an A’aninin (Gros Ventre) beaded hide war shirt, which also took the honor of top lot of the day, selling for $55,200. The war shirt was published in McClintock’s 1910 book, “The Old North Trail,” a first edition of which was included in the lot. Walter McClintock was a photographer sent out West by the U.S. government in 1896 to document national forests. He became friends with the expedition’s Blackfoot scout and quickly developed a deep fascination and appreciation for the Montana tribe’s culture. He would spend the next 20 years of his life documenting the tribe, its customs, and their homeland. Other highlights from the category included an identified Ponca beaded hide war shirt and leggings that sold for $45,600; a Sioux child’s beaded hide shirt for $28,800; a Sioux painted ghost dance shirt for $26,400; an Arapaho beaded hide belt pouch with cornhusk wrapped slats for $20,400; a Sioux boy’s beaded hide war shirt, collected by Gustav Sigel (1837-1923) for $19,200; a plateau pony beaded hide dress for $19,200; and a Cheyenne beaded hide tobacco bag for $16,800. While the last installment of the Sorgenfrei collection and beadwork were the talk of the auction, it was quietly a very good day for textiles from both the Southwest and Northwest. A 19th-century late classic Navajo child’s serape was the top lot of the category, selling for $24,000, while a

Heritage Auctions’ Chicago Comics And Comic Art Auction Could Challenge Records
Fine Art and Quality Antiques Auction SATURDAY, MAY 19TH, 2018 • 9 A.M.
Action Comics #1, Frazetta Painting Might Each Yield $600,000 Or More anywhere, and we have an extremely strong collection of valuable comic books that will draw the attention and interest of comics collectors from just about everywhere.” Action Comics #1 (DC, 1938), CGC VG 4.0, cream to off-white pages (est. $650,000+), is among the most coveted comic books in the hobby. The issue generates major interest regardless of its condition, and this is one of the highest-graded copies ever offered by Heritage Auctions (HA). Ernst Gerber’s “The Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books” rated it “scarce,” and CGC’s census lists just 40 unrestored copies. The first appearance of Superman launched the Golden Age of Comics, and every superhero that followed is in debt to the character created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster. The issue also sits atop Overstreet’s “Top 100 Golden Age Comics” list. Another highlight will be Frank Frazetta’s “Death Dealer 6” painting (1990) (est. $600,000+). Serious collectors covet original Frazetta paintings, 12 of which have realized six-figure returns in previous Heritage auctions. “At The Frank Frazetta’s “Death Dealer 6” Earth’s Core” sold for a record painting (1990) (est. $600,000+) will $1,075,500. Five of the top 20 interest advanced collectors of original Frazetta art. Twelve of his paintings have realized six-figure sums in previous Heritage auctions.

Most popular though are abstract interpretations, with the artist’s own impressions the major defining aspect. In a ceramic giraffe by Howard Pierce or Roselane, or a glass giraffe by Murano, it’s the shape that’s important. One look at the extended, curved necks and the tiny horns between the ears (those are called “ossicones,” by the way), and there’s no doubt what’s being depicted. Other artists took abstraction even further: giraffe figurines by the Finnish pottery, “Arabia,” are almost triangular and nearly featureless. The tan spots, though, are a sure giveaway.
