Antiques & Auction News Celebrates 50th Anniversary A Look Back And A Look Ahead By Karl Pass The month of May marks the 50th anniversary of Antiques & Auction News. Everyone at Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. is excited about this milestone, and we wish to thank the regular readers and loyal advertisers who have supported the publication over these many years. There is a lot to be excited about as we both reflect on the history of the paper and look ahead to the future. The publication was founded by Joel Sater in May of 1969. Auctions are exciting, efficient and transparent. The auction industry has a long tradition, notably in the state of Pennsylvania. It is a method that has evolved and strengthened with the use of technology. The Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association (PAA) has been at the forefront of this growth and evolution. The PAA has recently introduced a new logo and website, giving the association a fresh new look. The logo has an updated style, providing more eye appeal for today’s business. The traditional symbol for auctions, the gavel, remains on the logo with a more contemporary style. The keystone and lettering were also improved. “We felt it was time to update and give our logo a fresh look,” said Tim Keller of Lancaster, Pa., the 2018 PAA president. The logo immediately identifies the association. It symbolizes quality, and it represents the confidence a seller
should have when using a PAA Auctioneer. The PAA is the only professional trade organization for auctioneers in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Education, consumer, and member benefits, legislative issues and new ideas in the auction industry are the PAA’s hallmarks. The 2019 PAA president, Jeff Pennington of New Castle, Pa., said, “The new website is a powerful tool, not only for consumers but also for our members.” The site, www.paauctioneers.org, offers viewers an easy way to find an auctioneer in their area. “It’s a valuable tool,” continued Pennington. “Searching on the website for a PAA auctioneer is simple now that we are on board with BidWrangler.com as our new host and GoToAuction.com for their auction calendar import,” states Kim Douglass of Boyertown, Pa., the association’s administrator. “Both companies have been wonderful to

Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. bought Antiques & Auction News in 1984. Joel passed away the following year. Denise was one of six editors of the paper. In sequence they have been, Joel Sater, Jim Powell, Marjorie McCarthy, Denise Sater, Doris Johnson, Denise Sater (second time), and myself, Karl Pass, since 2013. In 1996, four-color was added, giving the publication color-printing capabilities. Especially important for this industry, the change allowed readers and advertisers a truer impact of an item’s detail and represented an object to better scale and quality. The biggest news for any trade paper is prices. And from the beginning,

What something is worth and how much it sells for are at the core of any market-based trade paper. To call it a stressful deadline would be an understatement! Q: What were your favorite aspects of running a weekly trade paper? A: I thoroughly loved every aspect of running this weekly trade paper. From creating the editorial and story ideas to the hands-on layout, it was extremely fun. Joel and I were both avid collectors and history buffs, and we felt so lucky that we could spend our days together immersed in the field of antiques and collecting and everything related to it. Travel, including to other countries, always included the search for antiques for our own collections, as well as the hunt for stories about interesting antiques and collections. Every travel experience revolved around that framework.

The exhibition will include nearly 150 objects drawn primarily from the artist’s bequest to the Morgan of over 900 drawings. Sendak borrowed gleefully from a personal pantheon of artists, some of whom he encountered firsthand at the Morgan. Several such works, by William Blake, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Domenico and Giambattista Tiepolo, will be displayed alongside his designs. So, the other week, my daughter wanted to invite a friend of hers to accompany us on one of our weekend antiquing jaunts. Her friend is not a collector but seemed receptive to the idea of what we were doing. We headed north to Billings, Mont., which is fertile ground for snooping in

The city of Philadelphia is celebrating Walt Whitman’s 200th birthday in 2019. As part of the citywide project, titled “Whitman 200: Art and Democracy,� the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) will screen “Whitman, Alabama.� This documentary, directed by Jennifer Crandall, presents a poetic portrait of American diversity through a series of short films of Alabama residents reading Whitman’s most famous poem, “Song of Myself.� For over two years, Crandall has traveled through Alabama, inviting people to share a part of themselves through the words of this epic 52-verse poem as a quintessential reflection of our American identities. This screening runs until Sunday, June 9, in Gallery 119. “Whitman, Alabama� is an experiment in using documentary and poetry to reveal the threads that tie us together. In addition to the film, this
Getting kids to collect is a challenge. There are so many distractions that can get in the way. In fact, one might draw an interesting correlation between the rise of the handheld device (phone, tablet, etc.) and the decline in collecting. We started our hunt at the first antique mall we came to. Well, low and behold, on the top shelf was a huge 1970s glass candy container holding what must have been 60 or more Wade figurines. Made from 1967 onward, it has been estimated that more than 300 million were made as giveaways for Red Rose Tea. They are ubiquitous in antiques malls, as every co-op seems to have a booth with some of these little figures.

If they continue collecting, Wades are a great item to start with. They can be found nearly everywhere, and because there are so many it teaches the girls about memorizing the items in their own collection so that they can then find the pieces they need to fill in the gaps. What was great for me was that Mary’s friend began a collection at an early age. She was introduced to the passions of collecting, and who knows where it is going.

Online bidding for this sale will begin at 9 a.m. and will be held exclusively on Bidsquare.com. Comprised of over 800 lots, Pook’s latest auction presents a number of unique collections. Early American furniture, folk art, and international decorative arts will cross the block alongside various textiles, fine jewelry, fine art and sculpture. A large portion of May’s sale is comprised of exceptional items from singleowner collections. These collections are grouped together, and the result is an impressive selection of specialized items, revealing the fruits of a lifetime spent collecting. One distinctive collection that will cross the block in this sale is a group of ladies boudoir items from a Main Line collector. This unique addition to the sale includes more than 30 oversized glass store display factice perfume bottles, a group of painted composition flapper doll hat stands, many ladies’ vanity and couture items, a collection of vintage purses and evening bags, French and German figural porcelain powder puff holders, and a selection of miniature hair art. From a Maryland collector comes an assortment of nautical items, including ship models, Currier and Ives steamship lithographs, whaling ephemera, maritime oil paintings, half-hull models, and a United States Lighthouse Establishment mahogany regulator clock (est. $600-$800). Next in sale is an offering of Native American Indian
artifacts and accessories. Among the many items assembled are bows and arrows, masks, painted drums, weavings, coiled baskets, and Navajo sterling silver and turquoise bear paw belt buckles. One item of special note is the Native American Northern Plains buffalo hide medicine shield, ca. 1890, possibly Crow, adorned with turkey feathers and featuring two symbolic bear figures representing a successful hunt (est. $800$1,200). An assortment of Scandanavian furniture and decorative arts will also be featured, including a Scandinavian painted stepback cupboard, dated 1807 (est. $400-$700), a Norwegian painted pine charger dated 1876 (est. $120-$160), and various Norwegian painted buckets, chip carved boxes, and figural tape looms. Nearly 100 lots of fine jewelry complement the end of the sale, including fine antique and contemporary examples, alongside various costume lots, gold pocket watches, mourning jewelry, and diamond and gemstone brooches. One item of incredible luxury is the opulent 14carat gold J. G. Durham, Philadelphia, ladies mesh purse, with sapphire cabochons and seed pearl detailing (est. $2,800-$3,200). Another fine addition to the end of the sale is a Rolex Tiffany & Co. stainless steel Datejust watch (est. $1,000$1,500) and an antique double-sided micromosaic pendant (est. $200-$400). The 10th Biannual Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium’s Spring Antiques and Garden Show will take place on Sunday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The parking lot will be filled with dealers, while the Emporium dealers inside will assist customers and answer questions about their antiques and collectibles. The courtyard will also be filled with flowers and plants to complement any garden or patio. For the month of May, the Emporium’s special sales display will be items associated with flowers and gardening. Also, a near-complete set of 1956 Topps baseball cards (339 of 340 produced, missing only the #130 Willie Mays card), with both checklists and overall graded VG/EX with some better, went to a determined bidder for $2,760. A circa 1930s coin-op basketball arcade-style gumball machine, made by the E.E. Junior Mfg. Co., a game of skill with the original players, artwork and instructions all intact, brought $2,760. The North Fork Collection consisted of 37 rare N173 Old Judge cabinet baseball cards from 1888, sold as individual lots, and brought a combined $431,000 at a Sports, Comics, Comic Art and Animation Auction held March 28 by Weiss Auctions. The sale was held at the firm’s gallery at 74 Merrick Road in Lynbrook, N.Y. This 500-lot auction grossed a little under $750,000. Internet bidding was facilitated by Invaluable.com and Proxibid.com. All prices quoted include a buyer’s premium. The crown jewel of this collection was a possibly unique cabinet card photo image of New York Giants captain Buck Ewing wearing civilian clothes. The card realized $109,250, an auction record for an 1888 N173 Old Judge cabinet card. Also sold were cards for Cincinnati Hall of Fame second baseman John McPhee ($66,125) and Washington catcher and legendary Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack ($48,300). Landmark Exhibition Of Japanese Art Inspired By 1,000-Year-Old Tale Of Romance At The Met “The Tale Of Genji: A Japanese Classic Illuminated” On Exhibit

Japan’s national treasures. The first, on loan from Seikado Bunko Art Museum, is a pair of screens by the Rinpa master Tawaraya Sotatsu (ca. 1570–ca. 1640), “Channel Markers” and “The Barrier Gate,” depicting two chance encounters between Genji and a former lover. The second is the breathtaking Heian-period “Lotus Sutra with Each Character on a Lotus,” from the Museum Yamato Bunkakan. These works will be on view for six weeks and then rotated with other masterpieces over the course of the exhibition. A number of works recognized as important cultural properties will be on view throughout the exhibition, including beautifully preserved album leaves by Tosa Mitsuyoshi (1539–1613), from the Kuboso Memorial Museum of Arts, Izumi, which will be shown together with rare Tosa School album paintings from the Harvard Art Museums and the Met’s own collection.

The “Googly” Eyed Doll Has It For $22,800 At Alderfer Auction Sale Ranks As Second-Highest-Selling Doll Auction In Company’s History
This “Googly” eyed doll, named Virginia (“Ginny” for short), is an Oscar Hitt German character doll with stunning blue side-glance eyes, a closed mouth and brown mohair wig. She has a bisque head, flange neck and pin joints and was the top lot at $22,800.
Emotions ran high as the last doll was sold for $22,800 at Alderfer’s recent anticipated doll speciality auction held on April 3. The in-house buyer raised his bidder number competing against online, phone and live bidders. He said he had waited decades for this German “Googly” eyed doll to come up for sale. The “Googly” eyed dolled, named Virginia (“Ginny” for short), is an Oscar Hitt German character doll with stunning blue sideglance eyes, a closed mouth and brown mohair wig. She was comprised of a bisque head, flange neck and pin joints. Ginny came dressed for the occasion with her five-piece cloth body adorned with antique cotton clothing. Other items from this sought-after collection from a well-known Lehigh Valley, Pa., dealer were a pair of girl
and boy Maggie Bessie dolls, which realized $13,200. Several European dolls took front and center stage leading
with a 17-inch female Van Rozen doll “France Depose,” selling for $7,800. Following was a 17-inch 6EJ, Emile Jumeau, which sold for $5,100. A 14-inch 02033 BSW “Wendy” doll character sold for $5,400, a Lenci doll with original owner’s Lenci Child’s Dress sold for $3,300, and a unique antique early Steiff blue mohair cat sold for $660. The American artist Dorothy Heizer brought in a winning amount of $3,900 for her 10-inch “Dorothy Heizer” cloth sculpture doll.
This ranked as the second-highestselling doll auction in Alderfer Auction history. Alderfer’s is located at 501 Fairgrounds Road, Hatfield, Pa.
