Prices include a consignor auction on March 27 at 10-percent buyer’s premium. The highest grossing lot was an Enck’s Banquet Center in Manheim, Abner Zook 3-D diorama depicting the Hat Tavern, selling for $41,800. An Abner Zook (1921-2010) 3-D mill and covered bridge scene brought $19,800. The Zook market is not showing signs of cooling off. The supply is there; Abner and his twin brother, Aaron, endlessly created these elaborate sculptural works. They were mostly made in the 1980s and ’90s and number over 1,000. The other factor in the market’s strength is that there are currently active buyers. It will be interesting to see if future generations with deep resources follow suit. Redware potter Ned Foltz of Reinholds, Pa., still working today, is regarded as among the most talented craftsmen working in the Pennsylvania German tradition. Create A Colorful Kitchen New Sales Display At Haddon Heights Offers The Goods Vintage kitchenware is a popular collecting category in the market today. The possibilities are endless, with items ranging from very affordable to rare and expensive. Most items can be used and are also great design elements for a kitchen. And then there are the colors, so many hues reflecting the era in which they were created. That’s why the Haddon Heights Antiques Center’s current special sales display is called “Colorful Kitchen.” It will cover much of the 20th century, from the 1920s through the 1970s. Shoppers will find the bright primary colors found in Fiesta and many Pyrex pieces. There are the pastel pinks and blues of the 1950s, bright greens and softer Jadite green popularized in the 1920s and
1930s, as well as red and white, sometimes accented with black or blue, which was vogue in the 1940s and into the 1950s. Bright turquoises and oranges found their way into the kitchens of the early 1960s, while avocado green and harvest gold decorated many kitchens of the late 1960s into the ’70s. The sales display will include bakeware and dishes, glasses and mugs, utensils and even linens. Kitchen collectibles can be found throughout the rest
of this multi-dealer shop as well. The Haddon Heights Antiques Center is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is conveniently located at 531 Clements
Bridge Road, just off I-295 at exit 29 southbound or exit 29B northbound in Barrington, N.J. For additional information, call 856-546-0555.
The Skinner Asian Works of Arts auction from March 16 to 25 offered various pan-Asian material ranging from Chinese ceramics and Japanese prints to a textile from Turkey and a stone funerary stele from Egypt. Bidding that took place online in the last hours of the sale resulted in an exciting end, with many pieces selling over estimated value. One of only 100 copies in the world, a near-pristine copy of Heber Bishop’s “Investigations in Jade” brought $137,500, including buyer’s premium. The volumes, which combine stunning watercolor paintings with plentiful lithographs and etched illustrations, were gifted to institutions and heads of state across the globe, where many of them have remained. Very few reach the open market. For the second Asian sale in a row, Skinner auctioned a significant piece of Korean art, a silverinlaid bronze sundial, among a handful of Korean bronze sundials extant in the world. Suhyung Kim, department director pro tem, remarked, “Before the discovery of this piece, a sundial with a tripod base had not yet been reported, making it a unique find.” With a distinguished provenance, it had been in the Wuppertal Clock Museum collection in Germany until the previous decade when it was acquired by the present owner. Chinese ceramics also achieved strong prices, with a group of 10 pieces collectively bringing $90,000. In various glazes ranging from clair-de-lune to famille rose, robin’s egg blue, turquoise blue, blue and white, and crackle glazed, they exemplified the beauty and diversity of Chinese ceramic production. Winterthur Shows Timeless Appeal Of Nature In Design A Sico rolling gas can sold for $720.
“Outside In: Nature-Inspired Design At Winterthur” Reveals The Root Of H. F. du Pont’s Aesthetic Henry Francis du Pont became famous for amassing one of the most important collections of American decorative arts in the world, but his passion for collecting began in boyhood with things such as birds’ nests and seashells. The exhibition “Outside In: Nature-inspired Design at Winterthur” reveals in exciting new ways the evolution of du Pont’s interests and the principles that informed his aesthetic. Opening Saturday, May 1, as Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library celebrates its 70th anniversary, this partnership with the Delaware Museum of Natural History (DMNH) unites selections from the DMNH collection of natural specimens with objects from Winterthur’s museum and library holdings to demonstrate the powerful connection between nature and the decorative arts. The visually eclectic and immersive “Outside In” considers how du Pont’s interiors looked to the outside and brought it inside in an aesthetic that has inspired designers ever since. As a child, H. F. du Pont collected birds’ eggs, plants, and other natural objects from the gardens and woods of his home at Winterthur and beyond. The same drive to gather and create beauty with objects was translated on a grand scale into his worldclass garden and remarkable

collections of decorative arts. The enduring theme of nature in design is seen in objects with naturalistic elements and objects like shells and minerals. Visitors will see motifs such as flowers and leaves in wallpapers, draperies, and other textiles, inlaid furniture, ceramics, and more. They will also discover how du Pont refined their arrangements according to principles that created a foundation still used by designers today. The exhibition considers his use of color, arrangement, floral design, and spaces that merge the inside with the outside. Organic objects such as ladles made from coconut shells and boxes made from tortoiseshell are included in the exhibition, inspiring visitors to consider current discussions about preservation and conservation of the natural world. “Outside In” also includes a full schedule of lectures, workshops, conferences, gallery walks, and more. This exhibition will capture the imagination of visitors of all ages with objects ranging from a hornet’s nest to shells, minerals, and fossils to exquisite cabinetry and shellwork grottos. “In honor of Winterthur’s 70th anniversary, ‘Outside In’ looks at how Winterthur’s mission to inspire has been realized by the ways in which Henry Francis du Pont’s design aesthetic in the house and garden have been ongoing motivation for artists, designers, and visitors in creating unique interiors and objects,” said Carol B. We removed a not-so-old bird bath and re-used the stand to support a ceramic Buddha head. The head came from one of those co-ops that included large quantities of Chinese container goods. These were popular among southern antique shops back in the 1980s-90s period, and one could tell by the number of sugar molds, wooden shutters, tiles and odd pieces of bric-a-brac that had been loaded into a container and shipped to the dealer who sold it. The head is really nothing but it had a great look. Our hunt continues for more, but we have started that process. And a little secret, be sure and check

With a new home, we have been out hunting for treasures both inside and outside. One of the areas that we have focused upon is garden antiques. This is a complex area to collect because you want to find great looking items that have just enough wear to look good but not so much that they look tatty. You also want to look for items that can be fun and whimsical but not kitschy and tacky. And finally, you want to put out items that will be secure from wandering off.
to reflect on several concrete Chinese pagodas that we owned many years ago. They were part of the small garden that I had at my summer home in Mt. Gretna, Pa. Sitting out in the shade with the moss and acid soil, they aged rather quickly. I moved them twice, and when a third move was on the horizon, I sent them to auction. They brought a crazy price, and later I found out that people thought they were antique concrete—proof that the patina is what sells and not necessarily age. In the last month, we have found a lovely bird bath supported by three sea horses. Here is a case where most readers are probably rolling their eyes at this image, but this is one of the early examples built on a large (and staggeringly heavy) scale with a beautiful bowl and all

I love great garden ornaments. Two of my favorite home gardens feature really beautiful items well placed. The first was a home in Georgetown that was populated by a flock of Fiske and Company deer. Simple, elegant, classic and absolutely spectacular to see. They showed good taste and wealth in a way that was not ostentatious. The second garden incorporated a wide range of garden sculptures. Some were carved stone while others were “old concrete.” The latter is important to understand when it comes to garden ornamentation. Concrete figures are in vogue, but they have to be of a style and with appropriate patination to look good. Modern concrete work lacks that patina to appeal to those who like the old or antique look. Now saying that, I do have

In The Spin: Kids’ Picture Records Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century By Donald-Brian Johnson Once upon a time, there were record players. And records. You know, those shiny black round things with holes in the center. You put a record on your record player turntable. It played one side. Then you turned it over, and played the other side. When it was done, you put on another record. And another. With today’s resurgence of interest in vinyl, the record

They came in colorfully illustrated paper sleeves that disintegrated as quickly as eager little fingers could pull them out. The now-sleeveless records were stacked next to the record player in

Some actually prefer the “reality” of a record to its digital alternative. But one thing we can all agree on: records always looked the same, didn’t they? Shiny? Black? Well. If you were a little tyke during the 1950s and ’60s, you knew differently. Records came in lots of colors. They were indestructible bright yellow ones, thanks to the prolific Little Golden company. surface illustration had been around since the early 20th century. By the 1930s, these primitive postcard/records had been replaced by paper core 78s, their artwork protected under a playable shellac surface. With the advent of the Depression, followed by World War II, luxuries like picture discs were soon left by the wayside. Then the war ended, and Vogue records entered the picture. Vogue was the brainchild of Tom Saffady, who presided over Detroit’s Sav-Way Industries. Sav-Way specialized
in laminating materials. Saffady came up with the idea of 10” aluminum-core 78s. Their eye-catching paper illustrations were preserved under Sav-Way’s “Vinylite” transparent plastic, which was bonded to the aluminum. A Vogue sold for about double the price of a regular 78 ($1 vs. 50 cents), leading to the company’s closing in 1947. Vogue’s 70-plus releases have continued to make collectors salivate ever since. Expenses were also kept at bay by using cardboard cores, the vivid images preserved under a surface laminate. In many cases, that laminate did not extend to the edges, eventually resulting in frayed cardboard borders. More expensive “sealed edge” laminate was utilized on occasion by both companies. deaccessioned from a museum helped to result in a 100 percent sell-through rate for the category of Asian textiles in the sale. The rarity of a pre1923 Kanto earthquake woodblock print by Kawase Hasui overcame minor condition issues, which did not deter print experts from bidding competitively, selling for $13,750. Paintings by Luis Chan found in an artist’s attic by a keen-eyed art collector also sold well above estimate, their vibrant colors exceptionally well preserved and characteristic of his fantastical portraits from the 1980s. Heritage Auctions’ Comics And Comic Art Event Soars Up, Up And Away To A $16.5-Million World Record Finish X-Men Book Becomes Top-Selling ’70s Title, While DC’s Lobo Lights Up A Six-Figure Sale “The enthusiasm of our bidding clientele was further demonstrated during this extraordinary event,” stated co-chairman Jim Halperin. During day one, 52 lots in the 1,483-lot event realized more than $4.45 million alone, with nearly every single comic book and work of original comic art going past pre-auction estimates. There was some particularly heated tussling over Simon Bisley’s iconic cover to Lobo No. 1 published in 1990. The work featuring the snarling, cigarchomping bounty hunter from outer space opened the day at $50,000. And by the time the dust settled, the Main Man realized $192,000, more than six times its estimate. A Batman No. 1, graded CGC VG/FN 5.0, sold for $360,000. That’s nearly twice the highest price ever realized for that book in that condition. Two years ago, the first issue of the Caped Crusader’s solo title in 5.0 sold at Heritage for $204,000. In January 2021, it sold a CGC 9.4 Batman No. 1 for $2.22 million, making that issue the second-highest-selling comic book of all time. Following the Dark Knight was the Daredevil, with the second page of the very first issue of Marvel Comics’ Daredevil realizing $288,000, nearly four times the pre-auction estimate. Little surprise, as this page from the 1964 Marvel masterpiece contains the panel with Bill Everett’s introduction of The Man DC Comics’ once-neglected More Fun Comics No. 73, graded Without Fear. Appropriately, a CGC 7.5, realized $111,000, the most ever paid for this title in CGC NM+ 9.6 Daredevil No. 1 any grade. This landmark 1941 title has Aquaman and Green likewise set a new record when it sold for $150,000, which was Arrow making first appearances.
$48,000 more than a samegraded Daredevil debut realized in January 2021. A first issue of Fantastic Four No. 1 graded CGC VF/NM 9.0 brought $264,000. And an Amazing Fantasy No. 15 graded CGC VF- 7.5 realized $156,000, the highest price ever paid for Spider-Man’s initial swing in that condition. And a Tales of Suspense No. 39 graded CBCS NM 9.4 went for $132,000. This was a sale filled with landmark titles, none more so than the 1937 Action Comics No. 1 prototype known as an ashcan. The very book to ever feature the words “Action Continued on page 7

A one-of-a-kind gun, it comes to auction with a $65,000-$85,000 estimate. In the military firearms category, there are scores of premium-quality entries, but two lots, in particular, stand out as superstars. First, there’s an exceedingly scarce and desirable Colt/Armalite AR-15 Model 01 machine gun that fires .223 Remington-caliber ammunition. An early and unaltered precursor to the iconic M16 machine gun, it is

Milestone’s May 1 Auction Loaded With Robots And Space Toys, Early Comic Character Toys And Much More Featured Item Is From Coveted “Gang Of Five” gun and one rubber-tipped dart. Competition will be strong for this imposing fellow, who comes to auction with an $8,000-$12,000 estimate. Target Robot’s “Gang of Five” stablemate, an all-original 15-inch-tall Radicon Robot, boasts exceptional condition to its grainy metal finish and comes with its correct remote control with antenna. All of the robot’s functions worked properly when put to the test by Milestone’s team of toy experts. The estimate is $8,000-$12,000. The dream selection of robots continues with Tremendous Mike. “Every robot collector considers Tremendous Mike to be a must-have, but examples in any condition are hard to come by,” said Chris Sammet, co-founder of Milestone Auctions. “In this sale we’re pleased to be able to offer collectors a super-clean Tremendous Mike with the ultimate bonus, its original box. The toy literally looks like it has never even been played with.” Its windup mechanism, “sparkling” chest screen and revolving radar antenna all
passed with flying colors when tested. The interplanetary tourist stands 10 inches tall and is expected to make $12,000$15,000. Among the other top robot and space toy highlights is a Bandai friction-powered “Flying Spaceman” on a “Super Cycle” with its original caped, green rubber “Superman” figure wearing its original red and yellow Slogo chest shield. It is accompanied by the correct, colorfully illustrated box lid and is estimated at $15,000-$25,000. Also headed for the spotlight is a fantastic Nomura 12inch battery-operated Walking Batman, all original (including cloth cape) in very good working order, and with its clean, original pictorial box. One of the most desirable superhero toys ever made, it should easily meet expectations of $6,000$8,000. Another featured collection that’s expected to make waves consists of 150-plus lots of vintage toy boats and electric outboard motors. All are new/old stock and retain their original illustrated boxes. The brands represented include Evinrude, Johnson, Mercury and more. Just one of the many highlights is a

rare 1959 Fleet Line Mercury Mark 78A outboard motor “drink mixer.” Both the motor and its Keikhaefer metal gas tank come with their original boxes. They comprise one lot that is estimated at $1,500-$2,000. “It’s very unusual to see a collection of toy boats and outboard motors like this one. Not only is it extensive, its contents are beautiful new/old stock, which you just never see,” stated Sammet. The auction also presents one of the most comprehensive
collections of comic character toys to reach the marketplace in several years. The cast of characters includes Popeye, Felix the Cat, Charlie McCarthy, Mortimer Snerd, Powerful Katrinka and a whole host of Disney favorites, ranging from Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto to beloved storybook characters like Pinocchio and his creator Geppetto’s pet cat Figaro. One especially exciting entry is the Walt Disneyauthorized Mickey Mouse
windup Krazy Kar with threedimensional figures of driver Mickey with passengers Minnie Mouse and Pluto. The exterior of the vehicle is whimsically decorated with images of Mickey, Donald Duck and Clarabelle the Cow. Made in England prior to World War II, the toy is marked “Made with Permission of Walt Disney Mickey Mouse LTD.” It is one of few known examples and carries a pre-sale estimate of $15,000-$20,000. For many collectors, the connection to robots is rooted in a childhood memory, discovering that Santa had left them a walking, flashing, noisy android under the Christmas tree. Collectors will relive that indelible memory on Saturday, May 1, at Milestone’s 766-lot Spring Spectacular Toy Auction, which features a specialty grouping of more than 100 coveted vintage robots and space toys. The robot lineup contains examples of some all-time greats. From Masudaya’s powerhouse “Gang of Five” comes an elusive 15-inch-tall Target Robot. All original and complete, its appealing color palette of rich purple with red and yellow accents is further enhanced by colored gels over its flashing eyes, mouth and ears and the all-important red target on its chest. This great robot has its correct metal dart

Milestone Another highly desirable toy is Distler’s (German) tin Walking Mickey Mouse with lithographed “pie” eyes and teeth, details seen on only the earliest toy productions depicting Disney’s beloeved cartoon rodent. Made in the 1930s and standing 8.5 inches tall, this very rare windup is estimated at $2,500-$3,500. Also from the 1930s, a German-made steam toy accessory called the Mickey Mouse “Slate Dancer” is cataloged with a $3,000-$5,000 estimate. Many eyes will be riveted on the genuinely “unique” toys in the sale: the 20 or so Marx prototypes. An outstanding 1947 Marx hand-painted prototype Goofy the Goofy Driver tin windup toy is 8 inches long, carries a Donald Duck passenger figure and has an eccentric, or “krazy kar,” action. Its auction estimate is $1,500-$2,000. An excellent prototype Moon Mullins Speedboy Delivery Motorcycle, 10 inches long with a hand-painted Moon Mullins driver figure, is one of the many toys in the Marx prototype selection that never saw production. The estimate is $3,000$4,000.
That spinach-quaffing, pipe-tooting sailor Popeye features in 66 lots, with iterations that range from table lamps and concept art to cookie jars and, of course, tin windup toys. A Marx Popeye Fliers toy with original box is estimated at $2,000-$3,000, while a Chein Popeye Overhead Puncher might bag $1,500-$2,000. Leading the category, a rare Linemar (Japanese) Popeye the Acrobat mechanical tin toy in
fantastic condition with a crisp and colorful original box could somersault its way to a winning bid in the $4,000-$6,000 range. The auction also includes a nice selection of pressed-steel trucks by all of the most sought-after brands, including Buddy “L,” Sturditoy, Tonka, Kelmet, Marx, American National, Smith-Miller and more. Some feature advertising, e.g., Allied Van Lines, Railway Express, Timberland Lumber, Coca-Cola, etc. Milestone’s gallery is at
38198 Willoughby Parkway, Willoughby (suburban Cleveland), Ohio. The start time will be 10 a.m. ET. All forms of bidding will be available, including live via the internet through Milestone Auctions’ bidding platform, LiveAuctioneers or Invaluable. For additional information or to reserve a phone line for bidding, call 440-527-8060 or email info@milestoneauctions.com. All images provided by Milestone Auctions.

2-DAY PUBLIC SALE
The Golden Nugget Antique Market, often rated one of the top 10 flea markets on the East Coast, recently announced it will be hosting its first Antique Model Train Show on Saturday, April 24. The Golden Nugget is well known for expert dealers specializing in antique furniture, art, and many collectibles, such as coins, stamps, jewelry, vinyl records, depression glass and, of course, model trains. “We are basically turning
our covered pavilion into a train station for the day. The model train dealers will all be in one area in our pavilion and will be displaying model trains of all gauges. A test track will also be available on-site. I believe this will be a great event for both the dealers and collectors,” said Golden Nugget manager Mitch Freedman. Located in Lambertville, N.J., the 50year-old establishment is open year-round on
Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Since 1967, the Golden Nugget has been a “gold mine” of an indoor/outdoor market, specializing in antiques, collectibles, art, and more. The market is located at 1850 River Road. For more information, visit www.gnflea.com.
