Nemadji: The “Southwest” Pottery That Isn’t
AAN Current News
Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century By Donald-Brian Johnson What’s in a name? When it comes to Nemadji Pottery, the answer is plenty. It’s 1940, and you’re a tourist “Out West.” Maybe you’ve been visiting the Badlands and are now looking for the perfect souvenir. You spy an array of pottery bowls and vases in the “Southwest” style. The shapes are simple, accented by an eye-catching mix Two small Nemadji vases, one with original straw décor, of multi-colored swirls are each 3.5 inches high. against an earth-tone base. You pick up a pot and flip it over. The stamp reads “Nemadji Indian Pottery—Native Clay.” How’s that for authenticity? Well, while Nemadji is certainly in the “Southwestern style,” northeastern Minnesota is where it actually hails from. But if the marking on that pot read, “made in Moose Lake,” would you have snapped it up? Probably not. Nemadji occupies a unique place in the history of American pottery. From the company’s earliest days, its “Up North” underpin- This small, short orange stripe vase marked nings were underplayed. The location, conveand many of their traditional niently situated on a large bed of shapes are preserved in our native clay, was ideal for Johnson’s designs.” As late as 1982, “Better purposes. But more capital was eBay listings still tout Nemadji as needed. The Dodge was happy to oblige. The story begins with ceramist Frank newly-renamed “Nemadji Tile and Johnson. In 1920, Johnson founded Pottery Company” soon won the Northern Clay Products nationwide acclaim for its decoraCorporation in Nemadji Township, tive tile, used primarily for flooring. just northeast of Moose Lake, Hand-thrown Nemadji pottery was also popular, and there the difficulty set in. Dodge saw decorative pottery as a sure thing for the country’s burgeoning tourist trade. Johnson, however, had no interest in mass-produced ware, and the partnership ended. His 1929 replacement proved largely responsible for the Nemadji designs today’s collectors covet. pottery needed to fashion molds for mass production. Hellman also modernized the Nemadji kilns, trained the company’s workers, and introduced the “cold striped” painting process which gave Nemadji pottery its multi-colored swirls. (Essentially, “cold striping” involved dripping different colors of synthetic enamels into a tub of water. Each pottery piece was then dipped in the tub, until the colors adhered. A twist before removal resulted in the signature Nemadji swirls.) Hellman remained at Nemadji only until 1931, leaving for Colorado and the establishment of his own studio near the Garden of the Gods. Hellman’s influence on the Nemadji output, however, was massive. Through changes of ownership and the addition of new product lines, right up until the company’s closing in 2002, Hellman’s original designs and techniques remained Nemadji’s

bread and butter. Now, for that “Native American connection.” Although the Moose Lake, Minnesota, area was once home to the Ojibwe, by the time of the town’s founding in 1870, most of the original inhabitants had long since been moved to reservations. The most notable
trace of their previous presence was the name “Nemadji.” This Ojibwe word, translated as “left hand,” was simply a directional term for the region’s first river on the left emptying into Lake Superior. Despite the legends and wishful thinking, there was no “Nemadji tribe” behind Nemadji Pottery. Instead, in an era before cultural appropriation was recognized, enterprising ceramists created their own interpretations of “Southwest style” pottery. While definitely not what original buyers presumed it to be, Nemadji Pottery has since found its own niche as a lovely, affordable (most pieces sell for well under $50), and sought-after example of mid-century Midwestern entrepreneurship. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: The Middle Market In Dutch Stuff
By Peter Seibert I was talking to a colleague the other day who was telling me about the bargain price of a really nice Pennsylvania paintdecorated Dutch cupboard at an antiques show. It was the kind of price on a piece that I never thought I would see. It
got me thinking about the future of Pennsylvania German/Dutch antiques. Having grown up in the MidAtlantic, these items were common at every show and sale. I recall seeing six figure numbers paid for some pieces. It made me envious and also hopeful that I might find a treasure at a simple country sale. I never found anything, but hope sprang enternal. So what is the future of the Pennsylvania Dutch market? As I have often said, each generation collects what its grandparents owned. So, Mid-Century Modern is naturally going to be
more desirable than fraktur or Dutch cupboards. That will be a reality and frankly explains the free fall for certain areas of the Pa. Dutch market, ceramics in particular. For the top end of the folk art market, I think it will always be strong, as the pieces are iconic. Those collectors who want to check boxes as to what they have in their collections must have certain types of needlework or fraktur. For the decorator realm, as long as there are farmhouses to fill, there will be a demand for pretty country items. It’s the in-between market that is so
difficult. I think if the subject matter is collected well (whether Gaudy Dutch or fraktur) that it will be a good investment. A complete and high quality collection of almost anything will be worth more than the sum total of the parts. I also think that a collection assembled around a specific geographic location will have great value. Thus, a collection of Ephrata or Hanover or Oley Valley will have a strong value into the future among locals. The collectors, and I used to be one, who like a little bit of this and a little of that are the ones who probably should
stay away. Having smatterings of items from many different genres within Pa. Dutch folk art, unfortunately, is not smart buying. I love Pa. Dutch folk art. It is my heritage, and I proudly hang a Flory family fraktur on my wall that celebrates my Lancaster Flory ancestry. I paid far too much for it at the Shelley sale, and I was deeply chastised by many for buying it. If I sold it today, it would bring a fraction of what I paid. Even 20 years ago, it would have brought a fraction of the price I paid, but it is family, and I know that I would not get another chance to have it again. My oldest daughter
wants it for her home someday, and I look forward to passing it on. Whether in five generations anyone will have my same passion for this is unknown, but for the moment, it keeps the piece in the family.
Peter Seibert, a native Pennsylvanian, grew up in the antiques business and remains closely tied to auction houses, collectors, and dealers. Professionally, he has served as a museum director and public historian in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Virginia, and Wyoming. He holds a Master of Arts in American studies from Penn State and has authored two books and numerous articles on decorative arts, interior design, and history.

scenes depicting Pennsylvania German country life, such as farm scenes and auction scenes. Winter scenes are by far the most common of her work and undoubtably were the quickest for her to do. Autumn auction scenes rank among the most collectible. The market is alive and well today for her work. The Hattie Brunner winter scene Another smaller Brunner watercolor sold for $4,620. winter scene sold at the Witman sale. It depicted a locomotive in the foreground and a church in the background and went for $1,980. The same collector bought both. Prices reported include a 10-percent buyer’s premium. Seagreaves (1913-2000) was a skilled folk painter but never produced her artwork on a prolific scale. She was a music teacher by profession. She was also the organist and choir director for 28 years at Zion Lehigh Church and also for the Church of the Good Shepherd in Alburtis, Pa. She was a watercolorist for roughly 40 years. Self-taught, she mainly worked in the Grandma Moses style of folk painting. Her work was exhibited in 1999 at the Historical Society of Berks County (now the Berks History Center). Her husband, Jim, was a well-known redware potter. In 1966, the Seagreaves joined the Reading-Berks Chapter of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsman. The artistic

Asian Fine Art And Antiques Top $1 Million At Clars Zhang Daqian’s “The Lotus Pond” From 1967 Sells For $443,250 Clars’ auction on Dec. 15 and 16 was led by an exceptional array of Asian fine art, antiques and decorative art, which came to the sale from several California estates, private collections and institutions. Two important paintings by Zhang Daqian (Chinese, 1899-1983) sparked what would become an international event, drawing highly competitive bidding from around the globe and fueling more than $1,040,000 for the Asian collections offered. Exceptional results were seen throughout this weekend sale and across all categories, making it the most successful December auction in the company’s history, with a 48 percent increase over the previous year. The two anticipated works by Zhang Daqian were offered in a special session. The first work presented was titled “The Lotus Pond,” 1967. This signature ink-on-paper featured a scholar standing on a bridge amid the lotus pond. Presented with an estimate of $150,000$200,000, it realized $443,250.
The second Daqian painting, also an ink-on-paper, featured a scholar on a boat gazing at a waterfall. Offered with an estimate of $30,000$50,000, this work sold for $43,050. A nonstop trend of the Asian lots offered soaring past estimates became the norm of this sale throughout both sessions. A Chinese bronze Gui ritual food vessel estimated to bring $5,000–$7,000 commanded $52,275. A Chinese blue and white plant container expected to earn $400–$600 went out at $43,050, and a Chinese hardstone rectangular palette dish flew past its high estimate of $5,000, selling for $33,825. Rare Huanghuali furniture also proved its ever-increasing value with a Chinese folding chair fetching $30,750 against its $6,000–$9,000 presale estimate. Rounding out the top highlights in this category was a Japanese hanging scroll from the Edo period. Presented for

Palpable Energy Drives Garth’s January Americana And Decorative Arts Event Graphite-On-Paper Ohio Farm Scene By Ferdinand Brader (1833-1901) Brings $8,160 By Susan Emerson Nutter January is that month when everyone gets to take a big deep breath and start anew, and the same goes for the antique show and auction industry. The craziness of the holidays is past, in many areas of the country the snow and cold has arrived, and for those whose interests are geared toward items of another era, it’s time to purge and plan - buy and sell - all of which makes for some fun antiquing events. Garth’s Auctions offered up a very nice selection at its Americana and Decorative Arts Auction on Jan. 12, where the variety on hand kept everyone’s attention. Right out of the gate was a perennial “want” for those interested in early furniture: a mid-19th century American pine pie safe with all the right triggers
– high feet, old red paint, two drawers, doors and side with star punched tins. It sold for $3,000 (est. $600/$1,200). Prices reported include a buyer’s premium. “It was that desirable look, with the punched star tins, and it had a nice surface,” stated Garth’s owner/auctioneer, Jeff Jeffers. “Its scale was pretty big as well, so it had a nice presence.” Numerous items sold at this January Garth’s event had a nice presence. An Ohio blanket chest by Jacob Werrey did well at $2,400 (est. $800/$1,200). Signed “Fulton County German Tounship (sic) Ohio January the 2th 1864 Maid by J.W.” the piece had a dovetailed case and two dovetailed drawers with their original pulls. Wearing old paint, the chest retained its stenciled wreath on the front with “BG 1864.”
Done with graphite-on-paper and numbered “No 62,” this Ohio farmstead by Ferdinand Brader (1833-1901) sold for $8,160. It was a detailed view of the “Residence of Henry and Priscilla Heisa, Jackson Tp. Stark County, Ohio 1888.” Other details include “Goshen, Ind” on the windmill and “Empire Binder” on the horse-drawn farm machinery.
This mid-19th-century American pine pie safe on high feet featured star punched tins in its doors and sides. Standing 75 inches high and wearing its old red paint, this early American kitchen staple sold for $3,000.
This circa 1885 New York stoneware churn with an impressed label “J. Burger Jr. Rochester, NY,” brushed cobalt “6,” and an impressive seated lion with tree sold for $6,000.
Done with pastels on paper, this portrait of a black horse standing in a meadow by Henry Dousa (Ohio/Indiana, 19th century) sold for $4,320. It was signed and dated “Lafayette, Ind. 1892” and included the reference “Big Frank at 2 yrs. Sired by Capulet 9697. Dam Jet by Young Frenchman Sire of Virginia Rec. 2.181/2.”A penciled notation,“F T Smith Chatham, Ill.,” was thought to be a reference to, “Frank T. Smith (born ca. 1867) to Blake and Susan Smith. Blake was a grain dealer. He and Susan, along with Frank’s first wife, Marion, are buried in Old Chatham Cemetery. Frank remarried and apparently left Chatham about 1910,” according to Garth’s. “Werrey was ‘gutsy’ in terms of the decoration he used on his pieces as far as Ohio furniture goes,” Jeffers pointed out, “and this chest was a good representation of that.” A 71-inch-high and 65inch-wide American fireback bench made of mixed woods with cutout sides, paneled back, and three nailed drawers in the top wore old grainpainted decoration and sold for $2,160 (est. $400/$600). “Those drawers above were a nice touch,” according to Jeffers, “and its size made it desirable.” Regional artwork from several genres was offered. A graphite-on-paper drawing of
an Ohio farmstead by Ferdinand Brader (1833-1901) sold just above high estimate at $8,160 (est. $6,000/$8,000). Signed and numbered “No. 62” at lower right, the detailed view was of the “Residence of Henry and Priscilla Heisa, Jackson Tp. Stark County, Ohio 1888.” Animals continue to be favorite subjects among many collectors, with a portrait of a horse by Henry Dousa (Ohio/Indiana, 19th century) done with pastels on paper bringing $4,320 (est. $2,000/$4,000). The work was signed and dated “Layfayette, Ind. 1892.” The portrait was of a black horse identified as “Big Frank at 2 ys. Sired by
“ONK SAM” by Sam Doyle (South Carolina, 1906-85), depicting a man with glasses on a yellow and pink ground, sold for $8,750. Painted on found metal, the work was 35.5 inches high and 17.25 inches wide. Capulet 9697. Dam Jet by Young Frenchman Sire of Virginia Rec. 2.181/2.” “This came out of a home in Mechanicsburg, Ohio, and is thought that Dousa might have done this work while staying there,” noted Jeffers. Another animal portrait, the oil-on-canvas “Waiting for the Master” by William Walker Morris (Florida, 1850-70), featuring two hunting dogs with a pheasant, realized $6,300 (est. $2,000/$3,000). The painting was large in size at 38 inches high by 58 inches wide. “The hunting theme and that the animals were good looking made this painting attractive to collectors,” said Continued on page 15

Certified Vintage Video Games Make Big Debut At Heritage Auctions Competitive Bidding Drives The Original Release Of “The Legend Of Zelda” To $3,360 Heritage Auctions took a first step into a new area of collectibles when its offering of 25 certified and graded collectible video games made its debut Jan. 13. “A lot of collectors are just as passionate about their childhood games, such as their trading cards or comics,” said Heritage vice president Barry Sandoval about the results from the Sunday Internet Comics, Animation and Art Auction. “We thought these certified games would do well, and we weren’t disappointed.” The games are graded, certified and housed in protective cases by Denverbased Wata Games, offering consistency and objectivity that can be achieved only through an independent,
third-party grader. More than 30 collectors pursued “The Legend of Zelda” (NES, Nintendo, 1987), Wata Games 9.4 B+ (Seal Rating), until it ultimately sold for $3,360 to claim top-lot honors. The Classic Series version marked the last release of the game on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The copy offered here includes the grey, three-screw version of the cartridge. Sealed versions of this NES title are exceptionally difficult to locate, especially in such a high grade. “Excitebike” (NES, Nintendo, 1985), Wata Games 8.5 A (Seal Rating),

This game inspired 10 direct sequels and multiple spinoffs. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (NES, Nintendo, 1989), Wata Games 8.5 CIB (complete in box), sold for $312, and “Super Mario Bros.” (NES, Nintendo 1985), Wata Games 8.0 CIB (complete in box), sold for $312. A copy of “Wario’s Woods” (NES, Nintendo, 1994), Wata Games 9.4 A+ (Seal Rating), sold for $228, and “Double Dragon” (SMS, Sega, 1988), Wata Games 9.6 CIB (complete in box), sold for $204. “These were just the tip of the iceberg,” stated Sandoval. “We’re going to auction more every week, and we have some real rarities on tap for our large February Signature Auction.” For more information, visit www.HA.com.
also sparked a flurry of bids from nearly two dozen collectors before drawing $1,140. One of the launch titles for the Nintendo Entertainment System, this copy is a Revision-A game with a round Seal of Quality (SOQ), which indicates it is a later revision of the title. “Excitebike” was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, who is known best for creating iconic Nintendo titles like “Mario,” “Donkey Kong” and “Starfox.” A copy of the first game in the longstanding Dragon Quest series, “Dragon Warrior” (NES, Nintendo, 1989), Wata Games 8.5 A (Seal Rating), brought $660 among 17 bidders. Originally released in Japan as “Dragon Quest,” it was renamed by Nintendo for release to Western markets. Garth’s Auctions Continued from page 10
Jeffers. “Morris is known for this genre, though the large scale of this particular painting was a big example for this artist.” Then there was “ONK SAM” by Outsider artist Sam Doyle (South Carolina, 1906-85). Created with paint on found metal, the image of a man with glasses was done on a yellow and pink ground. “Keep Out” was painted on the back of the work, which sold for $8,750 (est. $3,000/$5,000). “This image had a solid provenance,” Jeffers explained. “It sold with a letter from the first owner, who bought the painting directly from Doyle.” And, as always, decorative art, the “meat and potatoes” of any Garth’s auction, did not disappoint. A two-gallon stoneware crock featuring a
naive incised running horse done in cobalt went for $3,900 (est. $3,500/$4,500), while a New York stoneware churn impressed “J. Burger Jr. Rochester, NY,” decorated with a cobalt seated lion with a tree, made $6,000 (est. $4,000/$6,000). An American full-bodied copper pig weathervane with layers of gilding realized $4,200 (est. $2,500/$4,500), and an 18th century English Delft charger with Adam and Eve (and some restoration) sold for $2,875 (est. $900/$1,200). “January is always a bit restorative, and the energy in the room was palpable,” Jeffers stated concerning the sale. “Overall, it was a great beginning to what will be a busy 2019 for Garth’s.” This sale took place at a temporary location for Garth’s, kind of a stop-gap move before the company settles into its new Columbus, Ohio, digs. It was previously based in Delaware, Ohio. For additional information, call 740362-4771.
