The Artistry Of Basketmaker John Long: A Rare Talent, Gone Too Soon

Shoppers can join the fun starting on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16 and 17. By Karl Pass John G. Long of Slatington, Lehigh County, Pa., was a skilled basketmaker specializing in splitoak baskets in the Pennsylvania German tradition. Family, friends, collectors, and folklorists lost this premier talent when Long took his own life 17 years ago at the age of 59. Thanks to historian and author Richard Shaner, Long’s work has not gone unrecognized in print. Shaner wrote a retrospective John Long took part in many craft shows and festivals. John Long learned the traditional craft and art of basket-making from his grandmother’s brother, Henry Smith, a farmer near Emerald in the Lehigh Valley (north of Bethlehem). During the winters, in order to supplement off-season income outside the growing season, Smith made split oak baskets from local white oak he cut down. “Rethinking The Modern Monument” Rodin Museum In Philadelphia To Explore Rodin’s Legacy In Public Monuments The Rodin Museum will reopen in February with “Rethinking the Modern Monument,” an exhibition that explores Auguste Rodin’s legacy in public monuments. It will trace Rodin’s impact on monument design and modern sculpture. Revealing the controversial histories of Rodin’s commissions for public monuments across France in the early years of the French Third Republic (1870–1940), the exhibition probes questions that remain vital today: What is the proper function of the public monument, what should it look like, and who decides? Exploring Rodin’s history and models for monuments, “Rethinking the Modern Monument” sparks connections to the ongoing conversation about new approaches to American monuments today. Key works showcased include Rodin’s “Balzac” (modeled 1897, cast 1925) and “Burghers “Joan of Arc,” by Emmanuel Frémiet, ca. 1874, is gilded of Calais” (modeled bronze and 29-by-18-by-7 inches and a gift of the family of 1884–95, cast 1919–21), Frederic H. really had quality items. The other two were stocking their shelves with cheap editions bought at library and tag sales. Such items are easy to pick out since often ink pens are used to mark such books at tag sales, and the only way to hide that original price from us, the next generation of buyer, is to cover it with a swoosh of a flair pen. Many of the books in these two shops had such marks hiding the older or original price. Another clue as to the poor quality of the books was the smell of the shop. Something about musty, heavy mold and body odor should convince

When I would travel as a boy, the first thing that I would do when I got to a town was to look in the phone book for used and antiquarian booksellers. I love books, so finding some listed was always good news. It was also a sign, like a canary in the coal mines, that there was a good chance of

is much cheaper than having a store, employing a clerk, paying utilities, etc. One also has to bring up the advent of online resources as a reason for a drop in prices. I don’t completely agree with that perspective though, since rare book collecting is about owning the book rather than the content. In addition, the contents of many obscure and rare books are not necessarily readily available online. Whatever the reasons, today one sees fewer and fewer used and rare book dealers. This past week, we ventured out with a list of such sellers in a nearby city. Sadly, only one of the three sellers that we found

finding some antique malls in the community. Over the years, with the advent of both eBay and large internet book sites such as ABE, the market changed dramatically. With eBay and other auction sellers, the rarity of many books came into question. Where regional differences in prices had existed, the internet wiped that out. As a result, supposedly rare editions of modern firsts turned out to be much more common than ever imagined. The large internet book sites also similarly affected prices, as well as reduced overhead for sellers. Running a book business from your basement on the internet

The length of the month of February has changed over time and is the shorest month of the year. It once had as few as 23 days. When Julius Caesar remade the Roman calendar, the month was assigned 28 days during normal years and 29 days during leap years, which are set to occur every four years. Today, February celebrations include Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, President’s Day, and some years Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday. The entire month is deemed American Heart Month and Black History Month. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared the first American Heart Month to tackle heart disease in the United States. Carter Godwin Woodson, an American historian, author, and journalist, has been cited as the “father of black history.” In 1926, he helped establish Black History Week. For many years, the second week of February was set aside for this celebration to coincide with the birthdays of abolitionist Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln, who championed the 13th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which ended slavery. In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded into a monthlong commemoration. The Emporium sales display case for the month of

large-scale bronze ballerina after A. Fayral, and a colored print signed in pencil by Francoise Gilot (French/American, b. 1921) also highlight this category. Antique and high-end modern furniture slated to be offered will include a collection of pieces from Thomasville’s Art Deco-style Bogart collection, which was described by Brandweek reporter Sandra O’Loughlin as steeped in “old Hollywood glamour.” Cordier’s offerings feature the brand’s vanity and stool, a leathertopped writing desk, and several others. A Gothic Revival cabinet stands out among the antique offerings. Bidders are invited to
