Big Turnout For Morphy’s $2.3 Million Auction Of The Susquehanna Collection 16th-Century Suit Of Armor With Royal Provenance Realizes $270,600 Gold and silver may set the standard for commodities on Wall Street, but medieval steel was the metal that ruled the day on Jan. 16 at Morphy’s $2.3 million auction of the Susquehanna Collection. To the delight of a packed house that had gathered to bid on a 40-year collection of early Pennsylvania antiques and European heirlooms, a rare and outstanding early 16th-century composite suit of armor with royal provenance claimed top-lot honors at $270,600. “The suit of armor was a constant source of interest in the runup to the sale and a very popular attraction at the preview,” said Morphy Auctions founder and president Dan Morphy. “We were contacted by collectors from all over the world who wanted to bid on it. Hearts And Flowers Sale At The Emporium Holidays Abound In February Every four years, there is an extra day to the calendar in the form of Feb. 29, also known as Leap Day. Put simply, these additional 24 hours are built into the calendar to ensure that it stays in line with the earth’s movement around the sun. This year, 2020 is a leap year, thus February will have an extra day for antiquing. The January sales display at the Historic Burlington Antique and Art Emporium was very successful, and the dealers are extending the 15- to 20-percent winter sale until the end of February. During the cold days of winter, the Emporium is a great destination for antiques, art and collectibles. The Emporium is a 14,000square-foot building housing 50 individual booths and 65-plus cases where shoppers can search for antiques from the early 1800s to the collectibles of today. February is filled with unique holidays, the third Monday of the month will be a day for the American presidents, while the second day of the month, the groundhog will predict an early spring or another six weeks of winter.

This flintlock Kentucky rifle, .52 caliber smoothbore, made by Jacob Kuntz (1780-1876, Lehigh Valley, Pa./Philadelphia) is similar to examples at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Winterthur. It went above estimate for $61,500.
A relief-carved Revolutionary War-era flintlock Kentucky rifle signed “J. Ferree,” referring to a Lancaster County, Pa., gunsmith whose guns were highly regarded during the American Revolution, sold above estimate for $55,350. and gun barrels under government commission during the Revolutionary War. Among its highly attractive embellishments are fleurs-de-lis, possibly a tribute to Ferree’s French Huguenot ancestry. The rifle surpassed its pre-sale estimate to reach $55,350. An incredible collection of 18thcentury powder horns was offered, none more profusely decorative than the polychrome-colored example engraved with a map or plan of Havana that includes such landmarks and sites as “Mooro” (Morro) Castle, Shepherds Battrey (Battery) and New Store. Its main inscription reads: “The City Of Havana Illuminated At The Embarkation Of The British Troops July The 7th 1763.” A book example, the horn is attributed to Peter Robertson, a corporal in the 9th

On Saturday, Feb. 8, Bodnar’s Auction Sales will host its second sale of the year, and it is taking shape to be quite the comic book sale. There will be two collections featured, both with many key issues and copies in excellent condition. Over the past several years, Bodnar’s has grown a quality reputation for its comic book sales. With a team of people who have extensive knowledge in different comic eras, the category has grown far beyond Joseph Bodnar’s expectations. The company has sold many key issues, including multiple copies of Amazing Fantasy 15 and many other important issues. The first collection will be bound Golden Age comic books from the DC archives. This collection consists of 97 volumes of 800-plus bound comics unearthed from a Staten Island estate found boxed away unknown by the collector’s wife that they even existed until he passed away. She decided an auction was the best way to handle selling them. Most of the books are stamped on the front-page Property of Library, National Periodical Publications, Inc. The fact that the books are bound would typically ruin any value, but who they are bound by makes all the difference. How many people can say they own a bound book that DC itself has used? Included are a full run of Army of War #1-#301 in 26 bound volumes and some key highlights, including Lois Lane #1#13; seven bound volumes of World’s Finest #1-#16 and #68#122, which have key issues of

This holiday season, we decided we would go to the nines in terms of holiday decorating. We polished the silver, dug out the china, bought some beautiful deco water goblets on eBay, and did a host of things to make it really special. Regular readers know that I am a big advocate for doing it right when it comes to holidays. We invited our youngest daughter’s friends over to the house. The response was fascinating. On one hand, it was clear that they came from paper plate and plastic cup homes, so the fancy china and particularly cloth napkins really blew them away. The flip side was that the girls’

With our silver and china and glass, we do run the risk of something getting broken, but the result is that our kids, and now their friends, are getting an appreciation and interest in such antiques. I leave you with the thought that if we as collectors fail to excite others in collecting, that not only will this impact the hobby as a whole but more to the point it will drive down the value of our own holdings. Passing collections is not just about the joy of collecting but it is also about passing assets that will grow in value. If our children see collections as things never to be touched or used, then they will sell those items often for the lowest possible amount. So, I encourage you to dig

I have spent a considerable amount of time considering this and realize that part of our failing as collectors in inspiring future generations of collectors is not using our collections. I reflect upon the collector that I knew who had a fabulous collection but never shared it with his family. They knew nothing of it and never used the items. They were to look at it like a museum, and with the result when the collector passed, the family could not wait to sell the pieces. When I talked to the collector about it all, he commented that condition was everything and so to use the items meant that something might get broken with the result that the value of the collection would be diminished. While I understand the preservation of items, it strikes me as problematic to hoard items
out your collections and consider using the pieces with your family. Inspire them as collectors to use their treasures rather than to have them sit on a shelf.

What’s Happened To The (Fill-In-The-Blank) Category? An Examination Of Today’s Market out home equity loans, and much of that money was “invested” in further antiques and collectibles speculation. *Some even began to view their personal collections as a possible retirement vehicle, with plans of one day opening their own antique shop or joining the antique show circuit, specializing in fill-in-the-blank. *From the 1980s to early 2000s, as prices were rising, new collectors continued to enter the market, which for the time being made up for those collectors who were leaving the market due to age, death, or changing lifestyles. *For me, Sept. 11, 2001, was the symbolic date of change. America got hit in the gut, and
collected dust. Where their parents saw “opportunity” in the fields of antiques and collectibles, much of the younger generation didn’t share the appeal. *As older collectors
downsized and passed away, their children just didn’t care about the fill-in-the-blank pieces the way their parents did. They may have wanted to keep one or two items to remember them by, but the majority of the collection was ultimately sold and reentered the marketplace. *And over the years, with an increasing amount of merchandise re-entering the

I love antiques and collectibles and have for north of 40 years. However, neither my children, nor their friends, collect anything today. And I’m not alone. I hear it nearly every day, especially when I teach my “Your Children Don’t Want It. What Can You Do?” program, where most attendees report the same sentiment. What’s happened? Where did we go wrong? Well, actually, it’s just a generational and evolutionary thing. But whether you collected milk glass, Hummel or other figurines, cut glass or crystal, depression or carnival glass, ironstone, Currier & Ives lithographs, brown furniture, or (fillin-the-blank), the cycle for so many different collecting categories has been remarkably similar. For me and many others, it’s been a near lifetime ride. I didn’t understand what was happening at the time. But now as I look back, I’ve seen a similar cycle, regardless of the collecting category. So, here’s my analysis of “What’s Happened to the (Fill-in-the-Blank) Market.” *The 1960s-1970s began the rise of mainstream collecting. Prices were low, and collectors were able to furnish their homes relatively inexpensively, while at the same time assembling impressive collections. *At that time relatively few reference books and price guides were available. Collectors had to figure out what was common vs. rare or what was “good-better-best” mostly on their own. *Trade papers, supported by the advertising dollars of classified ads, antique shops and malls, antiques shows, and auctioneers began to emerge. And they promoted nearly all areas of collectibles, which fueled collector interest. Collecting became mainstream and “cool.” *Collector Clubs were organized as a way for collectors to “buy, sell, trade, and learn about” their fill-in-the-blank category of collectible. *With an increasing number of collectors entering the marketplace, prices began to rise, with more people chasing after a finite amount of merchandise. *As prices began to rise, many collectors became dealers in order to finance their collecting habits. *Specialty dealers, specialty shops, specialty shows, and specialty auctions began to emerge to cater to various collector demands. *Over the years, price guides, reference books, and trade publications began to proliferate, which enabled collectors to better understand desirability, scarcity, and marketplace value. *As collectors began to understand “common vs. rare” and “condition, condition, condition,” for better or worse, the mantra became “buy the best you can afford.” Rarities began to command premium prices because (we assumed) there would always be a buyer for “the best-of-the-best.” *Somewhere along the way, as prices increased, “collectibles” became “investibles,” and collectors began to view their collection as an asset
class. Who didn’t have an Excel spreadsheet or hand-written tally detailing the size and value of their collection? *As antiques and collectibles continued to increase in value, the perception grew that “the older it gets, the more valuable it will be.” There was a belief that value would never decrease and that there would always be another buyer who valued fill-in-the-blank the way we did. Few people admitted “losing” money on a purchase. *Increasing prices were further fueled by income growth and rising real estate values. For many, the older we aged, the more disposable income we had in our pockets to invest in fill-in-the-blank. Many took

all of a sudden, antiques and collectibles just didn’t seem as important as before. Collecting demand seemed to lose some steam. *As we advanced into the 21st century, there just weren’t enough new collectors replacing the older ones who were leaving the marketplace. Fewer people with disposable income chasing after a finite amount of merchandise inevitably led to a “softening” in prices (“softening” is dealer jargon for prices are dropping like a rock in water). *A deteriorating economy, $5.00 per gallon gas prices, and the growth of eBay and digital era all further detracted from the “thrill of the hunt,” which contributed to the shrinking demand for fill-in-the-blank. *And with the changing of the guard, younger people who are established enough to have disposable income preferred to spend their money differently than their parents. Electronics, travel, life experiences, and minimalist living meant more to them than outdated tangible items that
marketplace, and too few buyers to absorb it all, prices in the fill-in-the-blank category began to decline. And often quite drastically. *With fewer buyers today, many antiques shops have closed. Many antiques shows have disappeared. Many collector clubs have disbanded. And many trade publications have closed their doors. All because of the decline in collector interest. *All categories did not decline at the same rate or at the same time. It all depended upon who was left in the fillin-the-blank category. Harry Rinker once wrote that every collectible category was dominated by only 15-20 serious collectors and dealers who kept that market strong. Once those market influencers left, if not replaced by other equally motivated collectors and dealers, the category would collapse. I think he was right. And this is exactly what has been happening over the past ten years. Some categories have remained strong because there are still enough serious and motivated buyers

to sustain the market (e.g., high-end antique toys or decoys). But what will happen to these high-end prices when those remaining market influencers leave that market? It seems pretty predictable to me. *If you have assembled a collection as an “investment,” you’re probably already disappointed. If you assembled your collection because you “love what you collect and live with,” you collected for the right reason and can still enjoy your collection without worrying about the financial consequences. *Collecting has been extremely fun. Gold Ingot From Alaska’s Gold Rush Era Brings Top Dollar At Holabird’s Western Americana Auction 4,379 Lots Sold Over Five Days A 4.51 troy ounce Alaska Gold Rush gold nugget from the Atlin mining district, located just east of Skagway in Yukon, Alaska, climbed to $10,845, and an oil-on-board painting of two miners on mules loaded with various items, titled “Panhandlers,” signed by Texas artist William Forrest Martin, realized $8,540 at Holabird Western Americana Collections’ massive, five-day Holiday Treasures Auction held Dec. 5 through the 9. The auction was packed with a staggering 4,379 lots in a wide array of collecting categories, including Western Americana, railroadiana, gold, minerals, music memorabilia, mining, art, Native Americana, militaria, aviation, postal history, coins, tokens and more, held online and live in the gallery at 3555 Airway Drive (Suite #308) in Reno, Nevada. The painting and gold nugget were the two lop lots in a sale that grossed $270,272. Over 5,000 registered bidders participated online. Day one was the sale’s busiest day, in terms of the sheer number of categories. These included art, militaria, Native Americana, firearms and weapons, general Americana, autographs, antiquarian books, bottles, clothing, comic books,
cowboy collectibles, ephemera, entertainment industry, furnishings, gaming, jewelry, maps, music and photography. Also offered were political memorabilia, postcards, saloon/beer/tobacco, spoons, tools, toys, Wells Fargo/Express, World’s Fair/Expositions, coins and tokens. A top achiever was the original 1909 poster mounted on linen promoting “Pawnee Bill’s Great Far East combined with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West” ($4,375). The 30-by-40-inch framed poster advertised the brief partnership between Gordon William Lillie (aka “Pawnee Bill”) and the legendary Buffalo Bill. A Parsons & Co. Assayers (Colorado) gold ingot, one of four known examples, marked “1860” and “Twenty Dolls,” changed hands for $3,615. It most certainly would have brought more if it could be proved the ingot was real, but it can’t because there is no provenance for that one or the other three either. Still, two of the four are in museums (one is in the Smithsonian). Not much is known or documented regarding Parsons, who operated out of a remote mine in Colorado. A group of 40 ancient Chinese coins, dating to hundreds of years B.C., went for $3,500. These included a “Nose” or “Ghost-head” bronze imitation of cowrie shell, used from 700-200 B.C. throughout central and eastern ancient China. Eleven were unattributed. Part two of the legendary Ken Fee collection of mostly Western bitters bottles will be offered in online auction #67 that begins on Friday, Feb. 14, and ends on Sunday, Feb. 23, by American Bottle Auctions (www.americanbottle.com). Part one, held in November, featured a bluish teal Cassin’s Grape Brandy Bitters bottle that soared to $155,000. Almost no one had seen Ken Fee’s collection of over 300 bottles in four decades. Highlights From The 72nd Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association Conference Auctioneer Of The Year Award Went To Thomas Saylor Of Felton, And Ben Svonavec Of Somerset Wins PA Auctioneer Competition and Attorney: Advantages of Obtaining Legal Representation at Real Estate Auctions (Attorneys Patrick Deibler and Ashley Glick); Psychology in Photography (Stephanie Errigo); Auction PR Pro (Brigitte Kruse); The Auction and the Estate (Attorneys Deibler and Glick); Antique Tools (Mark Eastlick); and rounding out the week on Friday with a panel on the subject of Effective Marketing (Mike Calvert, Rich Coccodrilli and Tim Keller). The PAA annually hosts the PA Auctioneer Competition at the Farm Show Complex during the PA Farm Show. On the evening of Jan. 8, the room was completely packed while auction goers saw the best auctioneers in the state in action. There were 21 contestants, with Ben Svonavec of Somerset coming out as the overall Champion. The Runner-up was Brian Burk II of Meshoppen. The Rookie award (licensed for under two years) was given to David Gossert of Chambersburg, and the Top Female Competitor was Kim Douglass of Boyertown. Continuation of this competition was made possible by the Exclusive Presenting Sponsor, Manheim Pennsylvania. In attendance and spectating was their general manager Joey Hughes. and Geyer Real Estate Auctioneers. Several awards are given out to honor some of those who have dedicated their careers to the industry and who have made the industry better for all. Three auctioneers were inducted into the PAA Hall of Fame. This award is given to an individual based on integrity, honesty, high moral character, acute fairness, and distinction, and is bestowed on an auctioneer each year who, over the course of his or her profession, has committed him or herself to fostering excellence in the auction industry. The 2020 Hall of Fame inductees were James Clayton of Waynesboro, H. Brent Souder of Hatfield, and Linda Lewis of Wyoming (only the second female to be inducted into the Hall of Fame). The recipient of the prestigious award of Auctioneer of the Year was awarded to Thomas Saylor of Felton. The nominations for this award are chosen by auctioneers in his/her area, and the winner is selected by his/her statewide peers. Saylor has shown excellent leadership, high ethical standards, a willingness to share with others, participation in community affairs, and outstanding contributions to the PAA and the auction profession. Several auction companies were garnered awards in the first-place categories within the PAA Advertising/ Marketing Contest, including Hurley Auctions, Alderfer

The 72nd conference of the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association (PAA), one of the largest auctioneer associations in the country, gathered in Harrisburg on Jan. 7 through 10 to meet, greet and grow their businesses. The membership of the PAA is made up of auctioneers, trade members, and other auction professionals who are passionate about the auction industry and the auction method of selling. In attendance were hundreds of auction professionals including auctioneers, apprentices, auction students, support personnel, vendors, and presenters. All had access to many educational seminars during the course of the event that will allow them to better serve their buyers, sellers and the industry as a whole. E. R. Munro & Co. was the corporate registration sponsor. Other generous conference sponsors included Alderfer Auction, AuctionTime/ AuctionFlex, Lancaster Farming News, Sanford Alderfer Real Estate, Shearer Printing & Digital, Auctioneer Software by Spectrum Net Designs, the PAA Central Chapter and United Merchant Processing Association, and Antiques & Auction News. The PAA focuses on educating the auction professional. Continuing education points were available to the many auctioneers who maintain advanced auctioneer certifications or auctioneer licenses held in other states requiring education.
