Thomas In the late 19th and 20th century, people who worked in sewer pipe factories used leftover clay at the end of the day to make a wide assortment of decorative objects, some of which were given as gifts. These pipe factories were found all over the United States, although the most prominent production seems to have taken place in western Pennsylvania and Ohio, most actively from 1890 to 1950. The forms that were made include figures of animals, banks, vases, mugs, flowerpots, birdhouses, doorstops, bookends, and other shapes. Many of the sewer pipe pieces were created as personal items for family members and friends. They were given to children, likely as birthday presents and for other holiday celebrations. Some of these special objects were even created as wedding gifts. It is thought that the pocket watch was first invented in the 16th century, and its usage became widespread with the help of the later transportation industry, in particular the railroads and the need to keep the trains running safely and on time. Pocket watches include a case and movement, which were usually made by different companies, which means that the serial numbers on both will often be different. Lower serial numbers can often be more valuable than higher serial numbers. Cases hold the movement and can be made of gold
(10k-14k-18k), gold fill, gold plate, sterling silver, or silverplate, among other materials. If a case is marked 10k-14k-18k or some other gold marking such as “585,” the case is gold and by itself will have precious metal value. If a case is marked “Warranted 20 Years” or something similar, the case is gold plate, and they are “warranting” that the gold plate won’t wear off the case in that span of time. Movements are the interior clock parts that make the watch keep time, and movements by better makers can often be more valuable than the case. A good movement without a case can always find a replacement case. “Jewels” were used in the movements, and more jewels are typically better than fewer jewels. techniques found on some of these pieces include applied decorations, embossing and incising. Some of the objects also drew inspiration from similar objects manufactured in England, such as molded spaniels. These pieces can also be found marked, whether it be signed with initials, a name, and a date or even stamped with the mark of a sewer tile factory. The most special pieces are usually those that can be associated with a specific person and the meaning for why that object was made in the first place. A Sewer Tile Vase Made By Carl Funk In Akron, Ohio In the fall of 2020, I acquired a 20th century sewer tile vase decorated with applied birds and various flowers. I purchased it out of Illinois, but it was thought to have been found prior to that in Ohio. Even though the form and decoration was appealing, it was an inscribed writing on the base that captured my attention. The inscription read,�Marie Funk / Dec. 21, 1935 / Carl Funk.� Carl Elton Funk (1913-2005)

Hence, value is usually not all that significant. Pocket watches by luxury makers such as Patek Philippe and Breguet are in demand and can be worth large sums. Tiffany also marketed fine pocket watches, but relatively few were actually made by Tiffany. Enhancements such as enamel and etched case designs or fine gemstones can also add to value. It is believed to be an auction record for a Zook. Prices
include a 10-percent buyer’s premium. The other was an Abner 1988 autumn mill scene with ox-drawn wagon, overall measuring 48-by-30 inches, selling for $33,000. Both went to different local collectors, underbid by local collectors. Other items sold included a $20 gold piece selling for for $2,200; a Manheim $5 National Bank note, $1,430; and a five cent Mills table top gaming machine, $605. was of German descent, born in Akron, Ohio, on Feb. 26, 1913. His first wife, Marie Funk, was born in 1918; they divorced March 27, 1947, although, he married a second time in 1951 to Vera Genevee Parsons (1919-2011). Funk worked at the Maurice Knight Chemical Stoneware Plant in Ohio, very likely starting there in the late 1920s or early 1930s (which is where this piece was certainly made). Later in life, he was a gospel singer on television and radio in Louisville, Ohio. He is buried next to his second wife in Forte Meade, Fla. Funk’s occupation is listed in the 1940 U.S. Federal Census as an “Ovens Tender, Clay Factory.� It would seem that he began in the pottery industry at a young age based on the fact that his highest level of education achieved was eighth grade. His father, Howard Thurlow Funk (b. July 25, 1881), was also a German potter working in Akron, listed as a “maker of chemical stoneware.� The Maurice Knight Chemical Stoneware Plant was established The base is inscribed “Marie Funk / December 21, in 1910, and the com1935 / Carl Funk.� pany was the first
that took four years to complete sold at auction for $11,000,000. While better pocket watches can sometimes sell in the thousands, most average watches will sell for less than $100. The case, movement, and special enhancements will all determine value. And don’t forget the scrap value of the gold.

Graded Vintage Nintendo Video Games . There is a major speculative bubble brewing in the market for factory-sealed and graded vintage Nintendo NES games. While it is very true that factory-sealed first-edition Nintendo games are scarce, the market has been completely manipulated to get it to this point. Now we have literal investment groups targeting some of these items claiming they will go even higher. Make no mistake, the “Pokemon� collecting market is also being propped up by the same speculators. Use caution! Top Tip: If you are thinking of getting into this market from an investment standpoint, please reconsider. This market is much too new and speculative for the average collector to get involved in. All it will take is one key find of factorysealed vintage Nintendo games, and the market could potentially take a downfall. Novice collectors beware. Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to take this time to welcome you to the year 2021. Here’s hoping that 2021 is much better than the year 2020 turned out to be. And since it is a new year, it is time to use our “2020 hindsight� (pun intended) and take a look back at some of the hottest markets in the antiques and collectibles trade. Regular readers know that I do this each year. My next article will feature commentary on some of the markets in the trade that lost ground in the year 2020. All the collecting categories that I have listed below have, in my opinion, gained significant attention in the antiques and collectibles trade within the last year. This is solely based on my own observations in the trade, and you are welcome to agree or disagree with these findings. As is customary, I have also provided my best tips for anyone looking to enter these markets. Now let’s get to the list. 5. Luxury Collectibles . Vintage Rolex watches and Hermes Birkin bags have become all the rage in the luxury collectibles market, with some vintage timepieces fetching millions of dollars at auction, and Hermes Birkin bags, a relative newcomer to the luxury collectibles scene, fetching six figures or more. Even with the pandemic and economic upheaval that occurred in 2020, there has been no slowdown in demand for any of these items. In fact, even demand for modern era
taking up two separate entries on this list, but make no mistake, they are related. Anytime uncertainty and fear enter into the equation, these markets always become in demand. 2020 saw a rise in prices being paid for quality collectible firearms and collectible investment grade edged weapons. Truth be told, this market has been growing strong for several years now, and prices have been increasing steadily across the board. Top Tip: Be careful if investing in modern era collectible guns. Speculation is all the rage in this segment of the market, and, in my honest opinion, you are better off investing in vintage or antique collectible guns that have stood the test of time and are historically significant rather than modern era firearms that are the current “it� items to own. If going after edged weapons, try to buy historically significant items in authentic condition. 2. Pokemon Cards and Related Collectibles . Some collectors are spending serious amounts of money in an attempt to “catch them all.� While extremely speculative at present time, truly rare “Pokemon� cards aren’t going away anytime soon, so expect even more surprises in this market this year as well. If you happen to hink that paying six digits for a top-tier graded “Pokemon� card from 1999 is insane, I agree with you, but you can’t dispute the fact that people are more than willing to pay these prices at present time. Top Tip: Right now this market is much too speculative for novices to attempt to enter, at least on the high end. A correction will eventually come, and when it

Rolex watches increased as production was halted due to the ongoing pandemic. Top Tip: The market for top-tier luxury collectibles will always be in demand because the people who can afford these items are not easily affected by the strength of the economy at large. That being said, it is much better to take advantage of vintage pieces at auction rather than buying modern era pieces hoping they appreciate in value over the years. The money will always be chasing vintage luxury collectibles over modern era pieces, and that trend will always be the norm. 4. Numismatic Coins. Anytime there is uncertainty and a potential downturn in the economy, coins always provide a safe haven just due to their precious metal content. However, in 2020, even I was not prepared for how much demand would engulf the rare coin market, with strong prices across not only the U.S. market, but also increased demand in historically important world coins and ancient coins as well. Top Tip: Ancient coins are now entering a massive era of increased demand due to coin grading company NGC certifying them under their NGC Ancients grading tier. If you are collecting graded ancient coins, take your time and do your research to avoid overpaying. There are lots of great ancient coins selling at a discount in addition to some pieces selling for a premium. There is no need to rush into this market without doing the necessary research. 3. Firearms and Edged Weapons. I am combining both of these collecting categories to prevent them from

A 14-inch diameter splint oak gathering/potato basket by John Long (1943-2002) of Slatington, Pa., sold for $115. “I approached Woody Zettlemoyer last year about selling some things. Our things were divided up to two sales and a third sale will be just books,” said Eleanor. Zettlemoyer Auction Co. held a 422-lot online-only sale through HiBid on behalf of Dick and Eleanor Shaner from Jan. 5 to 19. Prices reported include a 15-percent buyer’s premium. Dick Shaner passed away Jan. 10 at age 82. Shaner was a local historian in Kutztown, Pa. There was an era when if you had an interest in Berks County history, you spoke with Dick Machmer, Bob Ensminger, Lester Breininger, and Dick Shaner. All are now deceased. All of them were passionate that local history, preservation, culture, and decorative arts were important to society. Shaner graduated from Kutztown State College in 1960 and had a career teaching. “Both of us taught in the Oley Valley School District, which is where we met,” said wife Eleanor Shaner. “We were married in 1970.” Shaner was a contributor to the Pennsylvania Folklife Quarterly and also the Historical Review Magazine put out by the then Historical
Society of Berks County. Batman No. 1 sold Jan.14 for $2.22 million, far and away the highest price ever realized for a comic book starring Bruce Wayne and his caped-and-cowled alter ego. The issue, the sole copy ever to receive a 9.4 grade from the Certified Guaranty Company, was already a recordsetter before the start of Heritage Auctions’ four-day Comics and Comic Art event. A week before the Jan. 14 to 17 auction even began, Batman No. 1 crossed the $1.53million mark, besting the previous world comic record set for a copy in November of 2020 when Heritage sold 1939’s Detective Comics No. 27 for $1.5 million. Shortly before the auction opened at noon Central Standard Time, it had climbed to $1.95 million. Heated bidding raised the final price to $2.22 million. This issue of Batman No. 1, featuring the debuts of the Joker and Catwoman, is now the most expensive comic book ever sold by Heritage Auctions. “We knew when the book came in that it was beyond special, that it was a once-in-a-lifetime offering, from appearance, its blindingly bright cover to its white pages, to provenance,� says Heritage Auctions Senior Vice President Ed Jaster of this newly discovered copy. “As I like to say, this is just a breathtaking book in so many ways. So we are not at all surprised that this has become a record-setting issue. But we are extraordinarily proud and honored to have brought it to market, to have done justice to its owner and to have found it a new home.� Until now, the highest price Heritage had ever realized for a Batman No. 1 was in 2013, when the Dallas-based auction house sold a CGC NM- 9.2 copy for $567,625. The first session of the Comics & Comic Art sale, filled with original art and high-condition first issues of numerous landmark titles, realized more than $4.56 million. Accordingly, Batman No. 1 was not the sole Dark Knight title to set a record day one. During that same kickoff session, one of the finest known copies of Detective Comics No. 359, from 1967, realized $132,000. That’s the most ever paid for a Batman title published from the mid-1950s until 1970, during DC Comics’ Silver Age. That price should not surprise: The book marks the debut of Batgirl, is graded CGC NM/MT 9.8 and bears the coveted Boston pedigree. And, it comes from the Alfred Pennyworth collection assembled by Randy Lawrence, whose celebrated collection of best-ever Batman comics was famously stolen in January 2019. Hennage Creative Printers. When he found himself in need of secretarial help in 1946, he hired June Stedman, (1927-2020) who had come to Washington to begin her career after finishing school in Virginia. They were married in 1947, and their partnership blossomed. In the late 1940s, they made their first visit to Colonial Williamsburg, and their life-long love for the historic city began. Their first collecting passion was not antiques but memorabilia relating to Joe’s hero, Benjamin Franklin, and books on printing, the profession the two men shared. June’s love of small objects extended to what she and Joe referred to as “penny toys,” or miniature animals, vehicles and figures, as well as miniature furniture, including tables, chests, chairs and beds. By the early 1950s, they were also collecting antique Chinese bronzes, porcelain, snuff bottles and netsuke. Although they did not begin attending the annual Antiques Forum, which began at Colonial Williamsburg in 1949, until later in the 1950s and more regularly in the 1960s, Joe often named this event as a great influence on them both. In 1965, Joe was asked to serve on the Fine Arts Committee of the State Department, a group formed to assist White House and State Department Curator Clement Conger in raising funds for the architectural renovation and furnishing of the diplomatic reception rooms, and remained a member and sometime chairman of the committee until 1996. By the early 1970s, the Hennages were collecting American antiques with increased fervor and attending Antiques Forum regularly. “Joe and June were bornagain patriots, and their excitement in being American was demonstrated by their passion for American furniture in the 18th century,” said John A. Hays, deputy chairman, Christie’s Inc. “They loved furniture that made a big statement, and their collection includes many pieces that boldly say, ‘I am American.’” The Love Affair Blossoms Over the years, Joe and June gave the State Department several exquisite pieces of American furniture and helped to transform the State Department diplomatic reception rooms significantly. Joe’s involvement with this effort led to his being asked to head similar Americana drives for the National Archives and for the Supreme Court. During the Bicentennial year, the Hennages’ philanthropic spirit provided numerous extraordinary gifts of important objects to various American institutions, including Mount High Chest, Philadelphia, Pa., ca. 1770, Vernon, Monticello, the mahogany, sabicu, yellow pine, and tulip poplar, White House, the Portrait is a bequest of Joseph H. and June S. Hennage, National Gallery and Colonial 1989-450.

Theirs was a love story of many dimensions: a love for one another, a love of America and its decorative arts and a love of Colonial Williamsburg. The culmination of Joseph and June Hennage’s passion and evidence of their extraordinary philanthropic generosity is the bequest of their entire American decorative arts collection, which they amassed over 60 years, to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. The Hennage Collection is a singular gift that will transform the already renowned American furniture and furniture miniatures, silver and ceramics collections at Colonial Williamsburg. Totaling more than 400 objects of various media, the Hennage Collection also includes paintings, prints and antique toy animals, vehicles and figures. To honor this significant bequest, an exhibition of highlighted objects from the bequest, “A Gift to the Nation: The Joseph and June Hennage Collection,” will open at the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, one of the recently expanded Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, in the spring. “Joe and June Hennage always sought objects of excellent quality and condition. Their gift consequently comes as an outstanding addition to Colonial Williamsburg’s collections. It includes superior examples of furniture from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania and Maryland, as well as silver by the major East Coast artisans of that day and a variety of other materials,” said Ronald L. Hurst, the Foundation’s Carlisle H. Humelsine chief curator and vice president for museums, preservation and historic resources. “The Hennages’ decision to place the entire collection in a museum setting is a clear example of their public-spirited generosity.” A Love Affair Begins In 1945, after being discharged from the U.S. Navy, Joe Hennage (1921-2010) returned to Washington, D.C., and soon thereafter founded

multi-million-dollar collection. There are myriad reasons why Batman No. 1 is coveted by collectors and cherished by fans. First, there’s the iconic, oft-imitated cover image, Batman and Robin, smiling at each other as they swing across the Gotham City skyline against a bright yellow backdrop. Then there’s the back-page pin-up “autographed” by the Caped Crusader and his fledgling sidekick promising “bigger and better thrills.” Inside, readers are presented with “The Legend of the Batman,” an origin story, which first appeared in Detective Comics No. 33, filled with grief and anger that will one day be retold, endlessly, in movies and television shows built upon that two-page narrative. After that comes the debut of a villain more popular now than ever before, star of his own blockbuster franchise: “a man with a changeless masklike face but for the eyes – burning, hate-filled eyes”—called only the Joker. This copy, too, has a storied background, having spent the last 39 years in the hands of a collector who bought it from a renowned comic book shop in Houston,Texas. In 1979, Billy T. Giles moved from Shreveport, La., to Houston, when Texas Eastern Transmission Pipeline Co. relocated its headquarters to Texas. He fell in with the local comics shops and dealers and helped his son complete an Amazing Spider-Man collection and obtain other key comics. Giles then decided to collect Batman for himself, starting
with the purchase of six of the first nine issues from Camelot Bookstore owner Willie Patterson’s personal collection. Camelot was located in downtown Houston, where Giles spent many lunch hours discussing comics, especially the Batman No. 1, with Patterson. Around that time, Patterson advertised Camelot’s copy of Batman No. 1 in the Comics Buyer’s Guide for $5,000, at the time a costly investment. When it failed to sell at such a steep price Billy offered him $3,000 cash, which Patterson happily accepted. The first Batman became Billy’s, and friends and neighbors teased him for spending that much for a comic book they insisted might one day be worthless. History, of course, proved otherwise. When Billy retired from Texas Eastern, he began a comic book business called BTandWDGiles, and spent the rest of his life buying and selling comics; his passion had turned professional. When he died in 2019, Billy’s son, William, consigned to Heritage. “It was time for somebody else to have it,” William says. “Dad would have been glad his story is being told – ecstatic, really. What he did to get that book and how he took care of it. He always knew it was the finest and would have been so happy it has been recognized as the very best. So I am thrilled that I can use it to honor my father. Sure, I am a little sad seeing the book go.
