Starting The New Year Off On The Right Foot At Haddon Heights As a new year and new decade dawns, time is uppermost in everyone’s mind. With that in mind, the first special sales display of 2020 at the Haddon Heights Antiques Center will focus on time. Philadelphians increasingly scrutinized the human body, its form, meaning, and expressivity. On Thursday, Jan. 23, dance historian Lynn Brooks will join LancasterHistory to discuss the intricate braiding of political, scientific, and danced representations of the body, with focus on blackface minstrelsy and ballet in antebellum Philadelphia. Collector Anecdotes And Antics Should You Own A Fractional Share Of A Rare Collectible?

We are pleased that he will share his wealth of knowledge with our organization.” His specialty in American history (especially on the Colonial, Revolutionary War and Early Federal periods) is due to his bachelor’s degree in history with honors from Temple University; a master’s in history from La Salle University with honors (holding the title of being the first graduate student to professionally publish an academic article prior to graduation); and a Certificate Degree from Bucks County Community College in historic preservation. investing in. That said, it isn’t for the average investor, as Merrill Lynch proved with its now failed Athena fund experiment. Ironically, however, what is old in the antiques and collectibles marketplace is new again. With the rise in values in speculative collectibles like vintage comic books, vintage “Magic: The Gathering” cards, and even vintage toys and video games, fractional investing is making a return to the post e-commerce internet. Now, rather having to fork over $100,000 for an Alpha Edition Black Lotus game card graded by BGS in 9.0 condition from “Magic: The Gathering” or a $60,000 CGC-graded copy of Incredible Hulk #181, the average speculator or unsophisticated investor can buy fractional ownership in these items from sites like Mythic Markets or Otis Investments. Both of these websites allow almost anyone to buy at least one share of ownership in these holy grail collectibles. With an entry point under $100 in most cases, would-be investors can simply click the “buy” button and be on their way to owning a piece of their chosen collectible, just like buying a share of stock or the latest high dividend paying

Back in the mid-1980s, third-party coin grading became an important game changer to the numismatics marketplace. After many years of unethical sellers, market manipulators, and just plain over grading, the advent of unbiased and impartial thirdparty grading seemed to be just the thing the coin collecting marketplace needed to stabilize and get to the proverbial next level. Coin collectors and enthusiasts, however, were not the only individuals watching the rise in values of coins closely. Many Wall Street financiers and brokerage firms at the time
simply put their faith in Merrill Lynch as opposed to attempting to buy rare coins outright without understanding the market for numismatics, which even to this day is quite sophisticated. Owning fraction shares of these rare coins, or shares of a fund that invested in these coins, just seemed safer to most investors at the time. Unfortunately for Merrill Lynch at the time, the rare coin market proved to be just too sophisticated and problematic for a brokerage house to manage. By the early 1990s, the fund would be dissolved, and Merrill Lynch would pay back all investors of the fund in full to avoid any court proceedings and possible investigations. Today, should someone want to invest in numismatics or the overall antiques and collectibles trade, they should not only be versed in the trade, but also educated in economics and finance. Investing in tangible assets of a collectible nature can be quite riskier and costly than investing in paper assets or even real estate, but it can be done, should the investor have the knowledge and understanding of the idiosyncrasies of the market they are
wants to sell the fractional shares they have accumulated. How is the value of their shares being calculated? Are they valuing their shares based on how much was paid to acquire the item in question or are they being calculated on the price of the proposed asset on the secondary market, even though a valid retail price hasn’t been established yet because the item was not sold? These are just some of the questions a would-be investor needs to ask before going into any venture like this. In my opinion, it would be better for the investor to buy items they can afford to own rather play in the high-risk waters of fractional ownership. In conclusion, it will be interesting to see what develops with these companies and their services going forward. If this is something that can be done correctly and the results can be proven, I may change my mind on fractional investing in the antiques and collectibles trade and support it. But for now, the past is all I have to determine the possible future. Thanks for reading!

were also amazed as to how much graded coins could sell for. This attracted the attention of several firms, but Merrill Lynch saw an opportunity where some on Wall Street saw great risk. Merrill Lynch created the Athena II fund in 1988 as a way to allow investors to invest in a limited partnership consisting of rare coin acquisitions. This form of fractional investing allowed investors to not physically hold the individual coins the fund was buying, but own fractional shares in them. The greater financial news media at the time was already abuzz with the latest record breaking rare coin auction sales. General interest in numismatic treasures was at an all time high, and Merrill Lynch thought at the time that the general public was ready to invest in the market for numismatics via financial instruments like partnerships and mutual funds. In theory, the concept was perfect. Merrill Lynch would pay an advisory fee to those in the rare coin market and assemble a high profile collection of pieces that were thought to steadily increase in value on the secondary market. Investors on Main Street as opposed to Wall Street would
ETF. But are these markets really that simple, and further more should the average investor be buying a “piece” of a rare collectible? The answer to this question is in the details. Unfortunately, most of these up and coming websites are too new to establish any longterm validity in the trade. Even details on how they sell and appraise such items are not clearly spelled out on most of their websites. Other companies have tried similar tactics over the years, and most have quietly exited the trade without as much as a whimper. This tells me that the track record of investing in fractional ownership is not too stable. Furthermore, liquidity risks are multiplied when entering into these type of scenarios, and that is just one of the problems with this type of venture. By their nature, antiques and collectibles are overall illiquid. This is especially true if the seller wants to maximize their profits and get full secondary market value for their beloved treasures. So in a sense, these would-be investors are choosing to invest in an illiquid item and just by having only fractional ownership in that item, they are surrounding that illiquid investment with a further level of illiquidity. That sounds like a recipe for disaster in my opinion. Another problem with this idea is what if an investor

A third edition of “Papers for Birth Dayes: Guide to the Fraktur Artists and Scriveners,” a tribute to the late Corinne Earnest, the Queen of Fraktur, as coined by Dr. Donald Shelley, will soon be available. Earnest spent 45 years studying fraktur artists and scriveners and recorded the data for approximately 35,000 fraktur and family records, most written in phonetically spelled German. This edition includes color illustrations, life and working dates if known, and discussion of the work of over 570 frakturists alphabetically spread across four hardcover books. New to this edition is a summary number of the entire body of work by each frakturist. Earnest documented 535 fraktur by Friederich Krebs and 455 by Henry Young, the most productive of the a r t i s t s . Amongst the scriveners, many of whom were artists, she documented 530 examples by William Gross and 400 by August Hainbach. Tables list those artists and scriveners whose works before 2018

Smithsonian American Art Museum Presents First Major Museum Exhibition To Explore The Achievements Of Native Women Artists Nationally Touring Exhibition Opens In Washington, D.C., On Feb. 21 Women have been a predominant creative force behind Native American art, yet their individual contributions, for centuries, have largely remained unrecognized and anonymous. In the first major thematic exhibition to explore the artistic contributions of Native women, “Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists” celebrates the achievements of these Native women and establishes their rightful place in the art world. The critically acclaimed exhibition “Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists” was organized by Jill Ahlberg Yohe, associate curator of Native American Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and Teri Greeves, an independent curator and member of the Kiowa Nation. At the core of the exhibition is a firm belief in the power of the collaborative process. The Minneapolis Institute of Art formed an all-female Exhibition Advisory Board, which included Native artists, curators and Native art historians, to generate new interpretations and scholarship relating to the art and its makers, offering multiple perspectives that explore traditional and contemporary voices and techniques foundational to the art of Native women. “Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists” will be on view at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum from Friday, Feb. 21, through Sunday, May 17. Robyn Kennedy, Renwick Gallery manager, is coordinating the presentation in Washington, D.C. The presentation at the Renwick Gallery will include 82 artworks dating from ancient times to the present, made in a variety of media, from textiles and ceramics to sculpture, time-based media
and photography. This exhibition is multi-lingual with wall text and labels presented in the artists’ Native American or First Nations languages, as well as English, aiming to present the works in the context of each artist’s own culture and voice. “We are honored to present this groundbreaking and bold exhibition, designed by and for Native women artists, that showcases their powerful voices and artistic traditions,” said Stephanie Stebich, the Margaret and Terry Stent Director at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. “We are also delighted to work with our sister Smithsonian museum, the National Museum of the American Indian, in offering dynamic programming to explore questions of modern Native identity and artistic practice. This exhibition also reflects the important work of the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative focused on amplifying women’s voices, reaching new audiences and empowering future generations.” “Hearts of Our People” highlights the traditional and integral role of Native women artists in serving the cultural, economic, diplomatic and domestic needs of their communities, reaching beyond longstanding conventions of treating these artworks as unattributed representations of an entire culture. The exhibition is organized according to three overarching themes: “Legacy,” “Relationships” and “Power.” These themes are a testament to the underlying purpose with which Native women have historically made art and enable visitors to note variations in the works of art created for similar purposes across time and Native cultures. “Legacy” examines the
way in which Native women artists acknowledge their lineage by creating works that simultaneously embody the experience of previous generations, address the present moment and speak to the future. Fiber work by D.Y. Begay (Navajo) and sculptural works by Cherish Parrish (Ottawa/Pottawatomi) are featured in this section of the exhibition. “Relationships” explores the concept of connectivity and reciprocity that exists beyond the human world to include animals, plants, places and living and nonliving elements. Christi Belcourt’s (Michif) painting “The Wisdom of the Universe” and the intricate bead work of Nellie Two Bear Gates (Gathering of Clouds Woman, Standing Rock Reservation) highlight this link. “Power” encompasses works created for diplomacy and influence to empower others and for the empowerment of oneself. Photography by Rebecca Belmore (Anishinaabe) and Rosalie Favell (Métis [Cree/English]), adornments by Keri Ataumbi (Kiowa/Comanche) and Jamie Okuma (Luiseño/Shoshone –Bannock), and shoes embellished by Jamie Okuma (Luiseño/Shoshone–Bannock) represent the spiritual, social and political power Native women hold. Free Public Programs Opening weekend events at the Renwick Gallery (Pennsylvania Avenue at 17th Street N.W.) include a land acknowledgement and welcome by Gabrielle Tayac (Piscataway Nation) Friday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m., and a gallery talk at noon by Ahlberg Yohe and Greeves, organizing curators of the exhibition. The museum will host a film screening Saturday, Feb. 22, at 3 p.m., at
the museum’s main building (Eighth and F streets N.W.) as part of the annual Mother Tongue Film Festival, which celebrates cultural and linguistic diversity by showcasing films and filmmakers from around the world. The museum is organizing a symposium in collaboration with the National Museum of the American Indian Friday, March 28, at 2 p.m. The program, which will take place at the National Museum of the American Indian (Fourth Street and Independence Avenue S.W.), features artists Jolene Rickard (Tuscarora), Carla Hemlock (Kanienkeháka), Anita Fields (Osage) and Kelly Church (Ottawa/Pottawatomi); a panel discussion will be moderated by Greeves and Ahlberg Yohe. I’ve stated many times on my “What’s It Worth” radio show that I believe we’re in the “golden age of nonprofit donations.” What I mean by this is that as the baby boomer generation moves, downsizes, and passes on, the value of many of their antiques, collectibles and household items have declined in value. They no longer want them, and their children don’t want them. With shifting markets, declining prices, and changing tastes, auctioneers are picky for consignments. Many antique and collectible dealers are buying less, because they are selling less. For many, a viable option is to donate no longer wanted items to a nonprofit group who will re-sell to benefit a specific cause, but in many cases, the investment of
