V. Grandi President, Matawan Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce
Spring is shaping up to be a season of growth, connection, and exciting momentum for the Matawan Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce.
Our recent events brought members together in meaningful ways, and we are thrilled to continue welcoming new businesses into our Chamber family.
We are pleased to welcome Sofia’s Taqueria, owned by Kim Foley, as our newest Chamber member. We welcome Kim to the chamber family we look forward to supporting her continued success.
Our February Networking Luncheon at Lenora’s Cafe was a great success, sponsored by presenters Michael Cline and Carlo Peña of the Arts Society of Keyport. Aberdeen Township continues to advance its commitment to sustainability and modern infrastructure with the opening of new public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at the Aberdeen Matawan Train Station.
The charging stations are located in Lot 3 of the Aberdeen
Matawan Train Station parking area, at the intersection of High Street and Atlantic Avenue (35 Atlantic Ave). This central location was selected to serve both residents and the many commuters who travel through the station each day, making clean transportation more accessible at one of the Township’s most heavily used transit hubs. The site features 12 public EV charging spots, designed to accommodate a wide range of electric vehicles. Chargers are equipped with J-1772 and NACS (Tesla) plug types, ensuring compatibility for most EV drivers. Charging is available at a rate of $0.39 per kilowatt-hour, offering a convenient and affordable option for those looking to charge while commuting, running errands, or spending time in town.
NEW EV CHARGING STATIONS NOW OPEN AT ABERDEEN MATAWAN TRAIN STATION
Mayor Greg Cannon and the Aberdeen Township Council marked the opening of the charging stations with a ribbon - cutting ceremony last month, recognizing the project as an important addition to the Township’s transportation and sustainability infrastructure.
The project was supported in part through a Clean Fleet grant, helping offset costs while allowing the Township to invest in environmentally responsible improvements.
“This is a meaningful step toward a greener Aberdeen,” said Councilwoman Connie Kelly. “Whether you live here or you’re just commuting through town, charging up just got easier. These stations make it more convenient for people to choose cleaner

MATAWAN TO LAUNCH HOMETOWN HEROES BANNER PROGRAM
In honor of our nation’s Semiquincentennial, the Matawan Borough Recreation Commission is proud to introduce the Hometown Heroes Banner Project, a heartfelt tribute to the brave men and women who have served, and continue to serve, in the United States Armed Forces.
This special initiative gives our community the opportunity to publicly recognize and celebrate our veterans and active-duty
service members. Beginning in May, commemorative banners will be displayed along select Borough streets, creating a visible and lasting reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of our hometown heroes.
There are two meaningful ways to participate: Hero Banner: Honor a specific veteran or active-duty service member with a 48” x 24” double-sided banner featuring their military photo, name, branch
of service, and years served.
American Flag Banner:
For those who wish to show support but do not have a specific individual to recognize, we offer an American Flag banner displayed on behalf of you, your family, or your business. This 48” x 24” double-sided banner features the American flag along with your name, family name, or business name.
The cost for either banner is

MATAWAN ABERDEEN BOE MESSAGE
As the Board of Education continues its work on the 2026–2027 school year budget, our focus remains clear: be thoughtful stewards of taxpayer dollars with minimal impact on students and classroom instruction. This year’s timeline is tighter than usual due to the transition to a new state administration, which has delayed the release of key state aid figures and compressed the planning calendar. Even with the shortened window, the Finance and Facilities Committee has remained in close contact with district administration. Ongoing meetings with department supervisors and building leaders are helping to align academic priorities, operational needs, and long-term planning — all through the lens of the redistricting scenario currently under review. The goal is to maintain strong programs, support our staff and students, and responsibly address facilities needs, while remaining mindful of the community’s tax burden. The proposed budget must be finalized, presented to the public and submitted to Monmouth County for approval by the end of April.
This winter has also presented unexpected financial pressures. Snow, ice, and prolonged frigid temperatures led to roof leaks in at least two of our schools. Our in-house maintenance team responded quickly to patch active leaks and protect classrooms, and outside roofing contractors are being considered for more significant repairs.
A larger concern is that all seven school roofs are currently out of warranty and in need of replacement. The District will continue exploring funding options and will share more information with the community as plans develop. Thank you, as always, for your continued support of our district.

MATAWAN MAYOR ALTOMONTE MESSAGE
Matawan Mayor Joseph Altomonte
As we look ahead to celebrating the Country’s 250th Anniversary, the Borough is planning to recognize this historic milestone throughout the entire year. Rather than limiting it to one single event, we plan to incorporate the anniversary theme into many of our recreation programs and community events so residents can celebrate all year long in different ways. The Borough, in partnership with the Matawan Historical Society, is planning Matawan History Day on June 27th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Matawan Municipal Center. The event will feature a Revolutionary War battle encampment and live re-enactments, offering residents an engaging look at our community’s rich history. The weekend will continue with our annual Independence Day Fireworks
Celebration, beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the fireworks show at approximately 9:00 p.m. Together, these events will create a full weekend focused on both national pride and Matawan’s unique local heritage. As more details are finalized, we will share a full schedule and promotional materials with the community. Please be sure to look for more details and follow us on social media. As always, if you need anything, please do not hesitate to reach out.
YOUR VOICE IN TRENTON
By Senator Owen Henry
As March arrives and the first hints of spring begin to show, I want to wish all Old Bridge residents a happy St. Patrick’s Day. My office continues to receive many questions from residents seeking assistance with numerous state programs and government services. Providing timely, reliable support to our community is one of our highest priorities, and we remain fully committed to helping however we can.
By now, households should have received their PAS-1 Blue Books, which are required for filing property tax relief applications. If yours has not arrived or you need help completing it, you can call 1.888.238.1233.
We’ve also heard from many residents asking about the status of their Stay NJ property tax relief payments. If you are still waiting for your check, you may contact the State of New Jersey directly online at propertytaxrelief.nj.gov.
As federal ID rules continue to change, I encourage residents to obtain a REAL ID if they plan to travel domestically or access certain federal facilities. REAL IDs are available at designated New Jersey MVC locations, with appointments recommended. Bring proof of identity, your Social Security number, and two documents showing your address. A full checklist is available at njmvc.gov.
This year marks an important milestone—the 250th anniversary of the United States. As we honor our nation’s founding, we also celebrate the civic pride and strong community spirit that continue to define Old Bridge.
Sincerely, Senator Owen Henry

MAYOR CANNON MESSAGE
Keeping our residents informed and engaged has always been a top priority in Aberdeen, and as your new Mayor, I’m excited to introduce a new initiative that makes local government more accessible and easier to follow for everyone.
We are launching a new video series called “Council Meeting Minutes.” After each Township Council meeting, residents can expect a short recap video from me or one of our Council members highlighting the key ordinances, resolutions, and actions taken that week. These videos are designed to provide a clear, straightforward summary of what happened at the meeting, what was discussed, what was passed, and how those decisions impact our community.
We recognize that not everyone is able to attend Council meetings in person or watch an entire meeting from start to finish. That’s why this initiative is focused on meeting residents where they are. We’ve already begun sharing Council Meeting Minutes videos on our Township social
media platforms, making it easier than ever to stay informed with a quick update. You can watch now on our Instagram or Facebook pages.
In addition to these recap videos, my administration has also taken an important step forward in transparency by live streaming our Council meetings. Residents who wish to watch meetings in real time can visit www.aberdeennj.org, navigate to the Government tab, and click on the Council Meeting Portal. There, you’ll find access to live meetings, agendas, and related materials.
Thank you for staying engaged and involved in Aberdeen. We look forward to keeping you informed, meeting by meeting, minute by minute.
TAX EXPERTISE ALL YEAR LONG.

DEPUTY MAYOR HIRSCH MESSAGE
Aberdeen Deputy Mayor Arthur Hirsch
One of my favorite traditions in Aberdeen is seeing our community come together for fun, family-friendly events that encourage residents to get outside and explore our parks. That’s why I’m excited to once again invite you to participate in our annual Recreation Program favorite: Leprechaun Lookout – Hunt for Finnegan.
Finnegan is Aberdeen’s lucky leprechaun, and he’s on the move! For a limited time, Finnegan will be hiding throughout 10 Township parks, waiting for you to find him. Are you up for the challenge? If so, grab your walking shoes and join in the fun as you search for Finnegan and collect his 10 secret Irish words.
Participants will be provided with clues and a clue sheet to help guide them around town. Each time you find Finnegan, you’ll uncover one of his hidden words. Once
you’ve successfully collected all ten, bring your completed clue sheet to the Recreation Office to claim your well-earned Pot of Gold.
Keep in mind, Finnegan only hides for a short time! He will be out and about from Friday, March 6 through Sunday, March 22, so be sure to plan your hunt accordingly. Pots of Gold may be claimed between Monday, March 9 and Monday, March 23, during Recreation Office hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Clue sheets will be uploaded the morning of Friday, March 6. While pre-registration is not required, it is strongly encouraged so Finnegan knows how many Pots of Gold to leave behind. Parents can register online at: https://parksrec.egov.basgov. com/aberdeen/
We hope this program brings smiles, laughter, and a little Irish luck to families across Aberdeen. Happy hunting and may the luck of the Irish be with you!

THE BEST SAT STUDENTS SLEEP
By Paul Pscolka
I recently had a very good student tell me he gets 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night. I found myself surprised. Then I thought, "Why should I be surprised that a good student takes care of his own needs?" especially when a high school junior requires 8 to 10 hours of sleep for optimal learning. Unfortunately, society values hard work to a fault, sleep often being a casualty. Sleeping enough is not laziness—it is a performance strategy, a competitive advantage.
Just as a bodybuilder must train hard but schedule rest so that muscles can grow during recovery, after studying diligently, the teenager must rest to consolidate memories. The student who improves the fastest isn’t the one who grinds the hardest, it’s the one who recovers the smartest.
More specifically, students who make the best SAT improvements are laser-focused on their practice to be sure, but they also take time for breaks, sleep, and reflection. Breaks, sleep, and reflection
are essential for memory, focus, and emotional regulation. A tired, stressed student cannot have a peak performance. It is not possible to be constantly productive. The highest achievers in the classroom often protect their sleep time and exercise, maintain friendships, and limit late-night cram sessions. They also protect their happiness. Stress does not equal commitment. What can a student do to minimize stress?
1) Study in 90-minute blocks. For every 90 minutes of studying, take a 20 or 25-minute break before diving into the books again.
2) Stay away from screens for an hour before bed to increase the chance of a good night’s sleep.
3) Take practice tests over a 3-month period before a given SAT instead of cramming just before the test.
4) Keep one night per week SAT-free Lack of sleep and self-care may be effective in the short term but are unsustainable for the long game.

INSPIRED ASSISTED LIVING AT RCH
Love Builds Community When Belonging Becomes a Daily Expression of Care
Love in assisted living is not only personal — it is communal. It grows not just between staff and residents, but among neighboring residents who are learning, once again, how to belong to a community.
At Reformed Church Home, this kind of love begins with simple invitations — a seat saved at a table — friendly knock on a door before an activity — staff member who notices someone sitting alone and gently draws them into participating and conversation. Over time, these small gestures become something larger — a network of relationships that transforms a building into a home.
For many residents, moving into assisted living means leaving behind familiar neighborhoods, routines, and social circles.
That transition can feel unsettling at first. What eases it most is not only architecture or amenities, but people.
Love shows up when new residents are welcomed by name — when long-time residents become guides and friends — when staff remember birthdays, preferences, and stories.
It shows up in shared meals that slowly become shared traditions — in activities where laughter bridges differences and in quiet friendships that form without planning.
Community does not happen by accident. It is created intentionally — by staff who design inclusive programs, by residents who open themselves to new connections, and by families who remain engaged in the life of the community. Strangers become companions. Companions become friends. And friends become part of each other’s daily lives. In assisted living, love is not only the care you receive. It is the belonging you feel.
At Reformed Church Home, building community is one of the most enduring expressions of love — creating a place where no one is merely living near others, but truly living with others.

MATAWAN PBA
Dear Matawan Residents and Business Owners,
On behalf of the Matawan PBA, we hope this message finds you well.
Each holiday season, our department proudly continues a long-standing community tradition, bringing the magic of Christmas directly to the neighborhoods of Matawan. For generations, families have stepped outside their homes to see Santa Claus travel through our streets, creating lasting memories for children and spreading joy throughout our community.
For nearly six decades, our beloved Santa sled has carried this tradition forward. After many years of faithful service, the sled has become worn and weathered beyond safe and reliable use. To ensure this cherished holiday experience continues for years to come, our union is seeking donations to help fund the purchase of a new Santa sled and trailer.
Our goal is to raise $8,000 to fully fund the purchase, lighting, sound system, and safe transport of a new sled that will serve our community for decades. Any funds raised beyond this goal will be dedicated to maintenance and future community holiday events.
This new sled will also be dedicated posthumously in honor of a longtime
volunteer whose generosity and holiday spirit brought smiles to countless children throughout the years. His unwavering commitment helped make this tradition one of the most anticipated events in our town, and we look forward to honoring his legacy.
Your support, whether as a business or private donor, will directly help us continue this heartwarming tradition and bring the spirit of the season to every corner of our community. Contributions of any amount are greatly appreciated.
If you would like to contribute, checks may be made payable to Matawan PBA Local 179. Please write “Santa Sled” in the memo line and mail to: PO Box 261, Matawan, NJ 07747
You may also donate via Venmo at @ Matawan-PBA-179.
Thank you for your continued support of our officers and the families we proudly serve. With your help, we look forward to carrying this tradition forward and creating smiles throughout our town this holiday season.
Warmest regards,
The Men and Women of Matawan PBA Local 179

NEW EV CHARGING STATIONS NOW OPEN AT ABERDEEN MATAWAN TRAIN STATION
Continued from page 1
transportation while supporting our community’s long-term sustainability goals.”
Aberdeen has a long history of investing in environmentally responsible initiatives.
Deputy Township Manager Eric Walker, who led the EV charging station project, said the initiative reflects the Township’s focus on making improvements that benefit both residents and the community as a whole. “This initiative is good for our town and our residents,” Walker said. “By adding EV charging at the train station, we’re supporting cleaner transportation while making every day travel more convenient. We hope to continue expanding green initiatives like this in the future.” In 2011, the Township became a local leader in renewable energy by installing solar power systems at all municipal buildings. The addition of EV charging stations builds on that foundation, reflecting a continued commitment to reducing emissions, modernizing public facilities, and planning responsibly for future growth.
Placing EV chargers at the train station
also supports a growing number of commuters who rely on a combination of personal vehicles and public transit. Drivers can park, ride the train, and return to a charged vehicle at the end of the day, helping to address range concerns and making electric vehicles a more practical option for daily travel.
As electric vehicle ownership continues to increase across New Jersey and the region, demand for reliable charging infrastructure is expected to grow as well. By installing EV chargers at the Aberdeen Matawan Train Station, the Township is proactively responding to that demand while reinforcing its role as a forward-thinking community that values innovation, sustainability, and quality of life.
With the new EV charging stations now operational, Aberdeen Township continues to invest in smart, practical solutions that benefit residents, commuters, and visitors alike, keeping the Township moving toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.
