S WE WELCOME a brand-new year, I find myself filled with gratitude for this community we are so lucky to call home. There is something uniquely special about Anthem—something you can’t quite name, but you can feel. It’s in the way neighbors look out for each other, how local businesses know your children’s names, and how our community shows up again and again with generosity, joy, and heart. A new year brings new intentions, new opportunities, and new beginnings. But here in Anthem, it also brings a renewed commitment to community. To connection. TWO YEARS OF FRIENDSHIP, FOOD & COMMUNITY

HEN JEN AND CANDACE look back on the moment they opened the doors of By the Bucket two years ago, their memories are anchored in one word: community. “It was a no-brainer. We had a great opportunity, and when you’re involved in the community, the community takes care of you.” Candace echoes the same belief—this business was never just about pasta. It was about people. What has unfolded since that opening day has surprised even them. “The friendships we’ve created—that’s been the biggest gift. The community reaction has been so positive.” Over time, their vision expanded naturally, especially as catering became a growing request. Weddings, school events, sports teams, special occasions—every corner of Anthem began inviting By the Bucket into their celebrations. But the journey wasn’t without challenges. Both women had spent years as stay-at-home moms, and stepping back into daily work life came with an emotional adjustment. “For me it was 30 years,” Jen says. “For Candace, two. Getting back into the grind while missing your kids—it was tough.” Still, they pushed through together. And not long after opening, something clicked. “It took a month or two,” they recall. “But once it did, we saw it. The community saw it too. We had a clean, organized place—and people appreciated that.” They made it a point to celebrate everything: “We mark every win, big or small, with a high-five.”

Their partnership has become one of their greatest strengths. “We share everything,” they say. “The hard things, the emotional things. We’re honest with each other. This is like therapy—we love working together.” If one needs a moment to step away, the other steps in seamlessly. “We share the burden together,” they add—a rhythm that keeps the business steady even in its busiest seasons.

And in Anthem, busy comes with a capital B. The community support has been, in their words, “HUGE.”. They sponsor local events, partner with Rotary, support school lunches and football teams, and show up as what they proudly call “boots on the ground ladies.” Their passion for giving back mirrors their passion for connection. “When customers walk in, we hope they feel happiness,” they say. “Many become friends. We’re real with our customers, and they feel that.” Both Jen and Candace share their excitement to keep growing their catering services. “It’s been a year since we started catering,” Jen says. “We provide great value. You can’t go wrong with spaghetti and marinara. And we make everything look amazing.” Their organization is a defining strength—“seamlessly picking up where the other leaves off ”—and it shows in the confidence they bring to every event. “We don’t clash,” they explain. “We respect each other. We swerve around each other but always finish what we started.” As for what they’re leaving behind in 2025, their answer is simple: “Fear.” With proven systems in place, they feel more prepared than ever for what lies ahead. Stepping into 2026, they’re inviting in more rest, more relaxation, and more opportunities to support one another. Their business goals remain rooted in community and service: staying busy, reaching more people, and continuing to grow the side of the business they love most. And yes- 2026 is all about one word: CATERING. Asked what they hope to celebrate a year from now, they smile. “Another successful year, and that we made it.” Their message to Anthem as they begin the new year is heartfelt and simple: “Thank you for your generous support, kindness, and friendship. OUTH FOR TROOPS is celebrating a major milestone in 2025—20,000 care packages shipped to deployed service members! This achievement came months earlier than expected. Originally projected for January 2026, the organization surpassed the goal thanks to a surge in requests for Holiday Care Packages, demonstrating the ongoing need to support our heroes serving around the world. ACK IN OCTOBER, our community had a shining moment of teamwork and heart. A huge congratulations went out to the Boulder Creek Football Team for their incredible victory that lit up the stadium and energized the entire Anthem community. The following morning, neighbors gathered once again—this time over warm plates of pancakes. The Pancake Breakfast, generously served by Tennessee Grill and hosted by Todd Ninneman, became a perfect reminder of what makes Anthem so special. Our Anthem Living sponsors showed up in full support, serving shoulder-to-shoulder with Youth for Troops. Together, they demonstrated the true spirit of unity, generosity, and community pride. HEN GINI AND ERIC PHILLIPS moved to Anthem in 2021, they couldn’t quite explain why it immediately felt like home. “We felt led to Anthem,” Gini says. Eric’s job transfer brought them to Arizona, and after exploring the Valley, something about this community felt right for their family. At the time, their children were young—Owen 9, Ellie 7, Harry 4, and Greta just 2—but the transition was softened immediately by church and neighbors. The Phillips’ have lived in Utah, Sweden, California and Texas but the sense of community they found in Anthem has enticed them to put down roots. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, they have had a church community everywhere they have lived. “This is the first place that we have also felt this sense of community outside the church, in our whole neighborhood and town,” says Gini. That sense of belonging quickly became part of their everyday life. “You go to each other for business needs, you see people you know everywhere you go. We haven’t had that anywhere else.” The Phillips household strives for intention and rhythm in their day to day. Mornings always begin with family devotional time—scripture, prayer, and a moment of grounding before the day begins. After Eric leaves for work, Gini gets the kids off to school and teaches at Mountainside Fitness, balancing her time with volunteering at the kids school, her service in the Relief Society at their church and household responsibilities. Afternoons bring the gentle chaos of snacks, sports, homework, dinner, and a finale of bedtime prayers. These simple, everyday moments are the ones Gini treasures most. Faith is the foundation of every part of their home. “With parenting there is no handbook and it is really hard, exhausting work,” she says. “You have to stay close to God because no one else knows how to help us the way He does. Every kid is different and each kid needs different things. But they are God’s kids. He knows what they need. And if we stay close to God He will help us. It’s easier with God than without.” Prayer, scripture, church attendance, and service

I surrendered to it.” Motherhood, for Gini, is a journey of ever-changing seasons. “Right when you think you’ve got it down, a new season emerges, and you’re like WHAT IS THIS,” she laughs. “You’re always adapting, growing, and evolving, and just when you feel like you have it figured out you are asked to do a little more.” She wishes more mothers talked openly about the hard parts. “It is not pretty and it is not perfect,” she says. “It’s hard… We need to be more vulnerable so we can lean on each other. Vulnerability is the key to connection and as mothers, we need that connection, because we’re all going through something hard and we all need someone to lean on.” As the Phillips look ahead to a new year, they are choosing to leave their mistakes and the shame behind. “A new year is a great time to let go of all the mistakes that we made,” Eric says. “With a new resolve we can do better and be better. It’s all a learning experience and we’re doing the best we can. We don’t have to carry that negativity with us any longer.” Their hope for 2026 is simple: more meaningful, intentional family time. Life gets busy, and connection can slip through the cracks but we all need that family connection that keeps us grounded and reminds us of what’s really important. Her message to Anthem families for the new year is as gentle as it is powerful: “That consistent 5 minutes of intention time, no matter how chaotic it can be, it always ends with ‘I love you’ and a prayer. guide their weeks. One recent service project with Feed My Starving Children left a deep impression. The kids had been bickering in the car on the way there, but once they began working, everything shifted and peace and love took over. “I had never seen them work together so well,” Gini says. “The rest of the day they were realigned. Service has a good way of putting things in perspective and reminding us of what's important.” Even at home, the kids help prepare meals for others. “It’s good for us and the kids to be reminded to look outside of ourselves.” Both Gini and Eric serve in their church community. Eric works with the youth and feels strongly about helping them see their worth. “They need to know that people care about them, and that they matter” he says. He sees how this understanding creates confidence: “When kids feel cared for, they gain the confidence they need to try things outside of their comfort zone. Without that connection, they stay in their own bubble.” Gini’s service through the Relief Society mirrors this same heart. “One person at a time you can cultivate change,” she says. “Jesus served the one. I pray every day that God will use me and that I will find someone that will need me.” When she considered returning to full-time work this year, she felt a powerful spiritual message: “I got a strong impression that it wasn’t time yet. I just need to continue to 13

OR CHEF AMBER Slavin, now leading the kitchen at The Bearded Barber, cooking began as both necessity and curiosity. With parents who worked long hours, she experimented with whatever ingredients were on hand, discovering early the joy of creating dishes that impressed even her very picky dad. Cooking for friends and family became her love language, where the conversations around the table meant as much as the food itself. Amber spent nearly a decade in the tech world before the COVID-19 layoffs pushed her to rethink her future. She knew she wanted something creative and hands-on, something that fed her soul rather than keeping her behind a computer. In 2021, she launched into private catering, where new flavors and techniques expanded her culinary style beyond the meat-and-potatoes meals of her childhood. Training under a skilled saucier taught her to master balance, fundamentals, and tasting with intention. Her food philosophy is rooted in simplicity: heat, fat, acid, and salt. “Master the basics,” she says, and you can build anything. She draws inspiration from Italian-American comfort food and those forgotten classics that once headlined Chicago’s hidden lounges and back-alley dining rooms. Oysters Rockefeller is one of them: a century-old dish she brings forward with a modern touch, giving Arizona guests a taste of an era they’ve only heard about in stories. Some of her dishes carry whispers of the Prohibition era—those indulgent, hush-hush plates once enjoyed behind locked doors in dimly lit speakeasies, where bold flavors thrived away from the spotlight. Amber loves creating specials and experimenting to see what resonates with diners. From curries to raw fish to octopus, she’s sold dishes she never expected and embraces the thrill of introducing something new. Leadership, patience, and humility guide her in the kitchen, where she focuses on supporting her team and creating an environment where they feel safe and confident. At The Bearded Barber, no two days are the same. She jokes that she walks in “ready for war,” cooking on the line during the week and directing the flow on busy weekends. Even on the toughest days, she says the work still feels right. At home, she encourages families to elevate meals with one simple upgrade: a quality kosher salt—and to embrace mistakes, because curiosity drives growth. Sustainability is also central to her approach at the restaurant, where she chooses cardboard over plastic, processes ingredients in-house, and sources from Arizona purveyors like Copperstar Ranch, Noble Bread, and Vital Farms. Above all, Amber strives to create a kitchen culture built on joy, creativity, and connection. She wants her team to feel proud of their craft and her guests to leave excited to return. When she’s not in the kitchen, she’s at home with her husband, two dogs, and cat—recharging in the same comfort she hopes to give others through her food. HE DAISY MOUNTAIN Fire and Medical Department is proud to announce the grand opening of Fire Station 144, located at 2402 E Cloud Road. This long-awaited station has been in planning for nearly 10 years, representing a major investment in public safety and community service. The Boulder Creek High School Tennis Booster Club is a newly formed 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting the Boulder Creek High School tennis program and student-athletes. The Booster Club’s mission is to strengthen both boys’ and girls’ tennis teams through fundraising, advocacy, and community engagement, while promoting excellence, sportsmanship, and personal growth. ODLES AND OODLES of Befuddled Little Poodles began with a word my mother used often when I was young: “oodles.” She’d tell me she loved me “oodles,” and that playful, rarely used word stuck with me. I’ve always loved rhyming and writing poetry, so I started toying with its sound, pairing “oodles” with “poodles”—a dog I adored from afar while growing up in apartments where pets weren’t allowed. Life has a funny way of circling back; both of Wende’s sons—now our sons—have poodles of their own.

For years, I carried around the idea of a whimsical book built on that simple rhyme. It wasn’t until Wende encouraged (and gently nudged) me to finally make it real that I sat down and brought the first story to life. The result is a playful, rhythmic adventure filled with colorful chaos and a gentle message about belonging, kindness, and embracing life’s quirks.

2ND ANNUAL Charity Cornhole Tournament at Homeland Brew Co.

GROUP OF LOCAL small business owners whose mission is to support one another while giving back came together for The North Phoenix Business Network’s 2nd Annual Charity Cornhole Tournament on October 11th, 2025. In true “support local” spirit, Homeland Brew Co. in Anthem, AZ graciously hosted the event benefiting Daisy Mountain Firefighters Charities. With basket raffles, a lively cornhole tournament, a 50/50 raffle, and family-friendly games, the afternoon blended community fun with meaningful purpose—ultimately raising close to $3,000 for the charity. Local businesses from across North Phoenix stepped up in an impressive way, contributing a wide assortment of raffle items that kept excitement high throughout the event. Last year’s host, iSwing of Anthem, also returned to show their continued support by creating a custom putting game, with all proceeds going directly to Daisy Mountain Firefighters Charities. Their

involvement added an extra layer of energy and friendly competition to the day. One of the most memorable moments came when the first-place winners—an eightyear-old boy and his aunt—captured the championship title in what was his very first cornhole competition. Their victory was met with enthusiastic cheers from the crowd. Even more inspiring, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams all gifted their winnings back to the charity, adding an additional $600 to the fundraising total and highlighting the generous spirit of this community. Delicious deep-dish pizza from Lou Malnati’s kept participants fueled throughout the afternoon, and the restaurant also contributed a generous contribution of their own—further emphasizing the power of local partnerships. On behalf of The North Phoenix Business Network, heartfelt gratitude goes out to every participant, sponsor, and volunteer who made the 2nd Annual Charity Cornhole Tournament such an incredible success. OR TAMI DOBBS, family business leadership is her legacy. Her family’s commercial printing business, Premier Graphics, founded in 1958, shaped her earliest understanding of hard work, responsibility, and using her strengths. In 2003, she took the reins of the printing company where her responsibilities included supporting major account sales, widening the vision for the company and financial growth strategies. She joined Vistage and Women’s Presidents Organization understanding the value in round table strategic conversations to learn and grow. There she spent time learning from others’ perspectives, hearing from leading speakers and developing her own skillset and her brand for leadership. Those seasons guided her through decades of operational leadership and ultimately helped her uncover her unique gift: the ability to bridge vision and execution. Today, Tami runs a boutique firm where she acts as a Fractional Executive for firms looking for strategy, structure and growth but don’t need a fulltime employee. A favorite job that Tami is currently actively involved in came about after a conversation with Jim Carroll at Anthem Law. Jim was looking for someone with Tami’s skillset to help define the trajectory of the firm, hire and train people to see the vision of the firm, create processes and assist in growing the company through re-branding and acquiring additional law firms. Tami’s role at Anthem Law spans financial oversight, human resources, scheduling, marketing, and dayto-day organizational health. The team at Anthem Law sees the vision, trusts the process and is excited about the future. I’m truly proud of what they’ve accomplished together this last year”, says Tami. Relationships are what energize her most, she says with a smile. She is the conduit for both people and process. She believes, “You need to have flexibility with people but rigidity to process if you’re going to protect the company way of operating, and in turn, drive excellence”. Her leadership is grounded in empathy, especially her role supporting an organization’s visionary. “As a second-in-command, I have empathy for the Visionary because I understand it’s a hard role. I’ve been there; I’ve lived in those shoes. It’s my job to be faithful to the mission that is in front of me”. To Tami, giving back isn’t optional. “It is our duty to contribute,” she says. Her work within the PBA reflects that belief. “I look at what matters to the members and where their current needs are - whether it’s a workshop about marketing, cybersecurity, or business growth - we are able to provide them with those resources and conversations to make their businesses better tomorrow than they are today.” Her family-business upbringing deeply influences how she shows up in Anthem. “Anthem is a smalltown family community. A circle of influence, a circle of love, a circle of businesses protecting one another. It feels good to live in Anthem.” Looking ahead, her hope is to elevate local businesses beyond Anthem’s borders. “Many small business owners think their business has a ceiling. illions of people today find themselves in a unique and often unexpected season of life: supporting aging parents while still raising or guiding their own children. This stage— lovingly called the Sandwich Generation— brings a blend of responsibility, love, pressure, and meaning that can stretch even the strongest among us. Yet despite its challenges, this season offers something rare: a front-row seat to the impact you make across two generations at once. It’s not easy. But it’s purposeful, powerful, and deeply human.

The Reality of Being “In the Middle” Life in the Sandwich Generation is about much more than juggling responsibilities. It’s about holding space—emotionally, mentally, and often physically—for the people who shaped your first chapter and the people shaping your next one. You may find yourself coordinating care, navigating medical conversations, supporting your children’s growth, balancing work demands, and managing your own health—all before lunchtime. And while this can feel heavy, it also reflects something significant: • You matter in powerful ways to the people on both sides of you. • Your presence is a stabilizer. • Your voice is an anchor. • Your energy is the glue that holds the moving parts together.

Rest and recharge aren’t indulgent; they’re strategic. 3. Boundaries build stronger relationships. Clear limits reduce confusion and prevent burnout. They allow you to be present without being overwhelmed. 4. You don’t need perfection to have impact. This stage isn’t about flawless execution. It’s about consistency, honesty, and heart. 5. Support is strength. Whether from family, friends, professionals, or community resources, saying “I need help” is not a sign of weakness— it’s the blueprint for longevity.

You’re Not Failing—You’re Adapting If this season feels overwhelming, that doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong. GRAND OPENING of New Pickleball Courts U

NDER A BRIGHT Arizona sky, Anthem residents gathered at the Community Park to celebrate the grand opening of four brand-new pickleball courts—a project years in the making and fueled by the passion of the Anthem Arizona Pickleball Club (AAZPC) and local leadership. Kevin Foster, Project Manager for Anthem, shared how the idea came to life: “Residents proposed new pickleball courts as part of the facilities master plan,” said Foster. “Gretchen Bender really championed the project, presenting the concept of four new courts to the board. Once approved, we went through design and bidding—Hayden Construction ultimately brought it to life in just a few months. This was truly a community-wide effort.” The new courts are designed not just for play, but for connection. “We intentionally built social spaces around the courts,” Foster added. “Even if you’re not playing, you can come out, relax, and enjoy watching the game. These areas encourage people to gather, interact, and strengthen the sense of community Anthem is known for.”

Joseph Rosales, a board member and head instructor with Performance Pickleball, spoke about the explosive growth of instructional programs within the club. “Back in May, we launched our first 2.0 beginner program—it sold out in hours,” Rosales said. “Then we added 2.5 and 3.0, and each filled just as fast. People love improving their game in a group environment with certified instruction. It’s not just about competition—it’s about learning, community, and confidence.” Anthem’s pickleball community continues to grow rapidly, now offering new programs, clinics, and tournaments through the Anthem Arizona Pickleball Club (AAZPC). “Pickleball is the most community-oriented sport I’ve ever seen,” Rosales added. “New players come in nervous and unsure, and leave with new skills—and new friends. Experienced players keep improving their game and leadership on the court.” As the ribbon was cut, speakers including Dino Cotton, Mary Click, and Scott Newell, the event’s Master of Ceremony, helped usher in the next chapter of Anthem’s recreation legacy. The celebration wrapped up with giveaways, laughter, and the first volleys on the brand-new courts. “Thank you for all your hard work and patience,” Foster told the residents. “These courts belong to you.
