FEBRUARY

IS OFTEN associated with hearts, chocolates, and grand romantic gestures but this month is also the perfect time to shift the focus inward. Loving your skin is one of the most powerful acts of self-care, and it goes far beyond vanity. Your skin is your body’s largest organ, your first line of defense, and the canvas that carries you through every season of life.

When we talk about “loving your skin,” we’re talking about listening to it. Skin changes with stress, hormones, age, climate, and lifestyle. Breakouts, redness, texture changes, sun damage, or unwanted hair are not flaws, they’re signals. Learning how to respond to those signals with intention and care is where real confidence begins.

Healthy skin isn’t created overnight. It’s built through consistency, education, and treatments that work with your skin rather than against it. Professional treatments like laser therapies, acne treatments, and skin-rejuvenation services can safely target concerns while supporting long-term skin health. Combined with proper at-home care including gentle cleansing, hydration, sun protection, and active ingredients introduced slowly-your skin can truly thrive.

February is also an invitation to release unrealistic standards. Skin has texture. Pores exist. Healing takes time. Loving your skin means giving it grace, patience, and support instead of criticism.

This month, consider redefining what beauty means to you. Choose treatments that make you feel confident, routines that feel nourishing, and professionals who prioritize safety and education. Whether your goal is clearer skin,

smoother texture, or simply feeling more comfortable in your own body, loving your skin is a commitment that pays off far beyond February.

Because the most meaningful relationship you’ll ever have is the one you have with yourself - and it starts with the skin you’re in.

A TASTE OF HOME

still alive—96 years old—and this is her recipe. It means everything to me.” When Leila came to the United States in 2015, she thought she was finished cooking. “I said I wasn’t going to cook anymore,” she admits. “But within six months, I realized I needed to cook again.” She explored other ventures—chocolates, private chef work—but empanadas stayed on her mind. “I knew it would be a good business,” she says. What followed were years of trial and error. “I wasn’t happy,” she says. “So, I changed everything—the machines, the process—and went back to what I believed in.” The recipe today stays true to its roots, with small professional refinements. “We keep the butter, the sour cream—just small adjustments,” she explains. Leila always envisioned more than frozen empanadas. “In my mind, I always wanted a storefront—to sell them baked, fresh,” she says.

That vision came to life in 2021 with Andrea by her side as her partner in business.

Opening a brick-and-mortar location was anything but easy. Finding a landlord willing to take a chance on a small business was difficult. Permits took nearly a year

FOR LEILA’S EMPANADAS owner Leila, Brazil is not just a place—it is her heart.

“Brazil is my heart. My family is there. I lived there for 45 years, and it’s always on my mind and always in my heart,” she says. “Now we have a little piece of Brazil here.” That connection to home lives in every empanada she makes—each one carrying generations of family tradition, resilience, and love.

“I started cooking when I was seven years old with my grandma and my mom,” she recalls. “By the time I was twelve, I was cooking for my whole family like a professional.” She laughs as she remembers her confidence. “I thought I cooked better than my mom,” she says. “And my family never complained.”

Empanadas may not be traditionally Brazilian, but they are deeply woven throughout South America— and into Leila’s story.

“My mom always made empanadas,” she explains. “When I went to college, my friend’s mom made these empanadas, and I fell in love. I said, ‘Oh my goodness—this is delicious.’ That was 30 or 40 years ago.” That recipe became part of her family’s rhythm, shared and refined but never abandoned. One empanada, in particular, holds special meaning.

“The Maria,” Leila says. “Maria was my friend’s mom. She cooked the best empanada I’ve ever had. She’s

and a half. The store had to be built twice. “We fought. We cried. But we never gave up,” Andrea says.

Today, the reward is unmistakable. “When I see customers walk in, I am so happy,” Leila says. “Today I came in and the store was full. No complaints.” Andrea adds, “It’s all the smiles. This place isn’t just for us—it’s for our employees, the kids who work on the weekends.”

The community response has been overwhelming. “Our clients hug us the first time they come in,” Andrea says. “They bring friends and family. They want to spread the word.” With visibility off I-17, travelers from out of state—and even out of the country—now stop in. “They eat, they enjoy, and then they go on their final destination happy,” she says.

Leila and Andrea’s partnership began years before business. “We met at Anthem Park,” Andrea recalls. “Our husbands connected, we found out we were both Brazilian, and from that day we became family.” For Leila, the timing was everything. “My mom had just passed away,” she says. “Andrea came like an answer to prayers.” Their bond is rooted in trust and mutual respect. “It’s not just friendship—it’s sisterhood,” Andrea says. “We motivate each other. We never bring each other down.” Leila smiles. "We want to open more stores,” they share. “Not big stores—bake and sell. Easy, convenient, healthy food.” New fillings are always coming, including a cozy mac-and-cheese empanada planned for winter.

When customers take that first bite, Leila hopes they feel one thing: “Home,” she says. “Family. Good memories. A safe place.” Then she smiles. “And maybe they say—it’s the best empanada in Phoenix. Or even the country.”

LUCKY BREW COFFEE

THECREATION OF Lucky Brew Coffee was both spontaneous and a long time coming. I've always known that whatever I did with my life I wanted it to be my own. Something with no limits or boundaries where I could let my creativity flow. I've been a barista working for a large-scale company for almost four years without feeling excited about any advancements in my job. So, one morning I decided to put my efforts into my own coffee business in pursuit of real growth. I knew I'd procrastinate if I didn't start right away, so in just a couple hours I bought a base for my cart and started my research for all the things I needed to start building it. My dad did most of the hard labor for the building process (because I'm no woodworker or plumber lol) and in just a couple months it was ready for business!

My main goal for my menu was to provide all the essentials, without all the preservatives. It is very important to me that I know what ingredients are going into my coffee so I decided to make all my coffee syrups using simple, natural ingredients along with using organic coffee beans.

Although this whole process has been extremely exciting, I don’t want to stop at just making delicious coffee. I want to do something more meaningful. Lucky Brew Coffee is named after my first dog Lucky. I knew I wanted to honor the dog that has been with me since I was 12 years old, however I didn’t just want it to have a sentimental meaning to me, I wanted to make sure that it was a key part of my business. Lucky Brew will be partnering with local animal shelters to organize events to help get dogs adopted. This is the sole purpose of Lucky Brew Coffee, and I am beyond excited to make a difference in the lives of so many pups.

DAISY MOUNTAIN Fire & Medical District’s

New Station in

East

Desert Hills/West Cave Creek

THE DAISY MOUNTAIN Fire & Medical District (DMFD) is taking a major step to strengthen public safety with the construction of a new fire station serving the East Desert Hills and West Cave Creek communities. As East Desert Hills continues to grow, the demand for timely emergency response has increased, stretching the District’s existing infrastructure.

To meet this need, DMFD selected a strategic site at 24th Street and Cloud Road to expand coverage and improve service delivery. Fire Station 144, the seventh station in the District’s 250 square mile service area, represents collaboration and shared commitment between DMFD and the Town of Cave Creek, who will jointly fund its operations. The station’s modern design incorporates advanced technology, specialized apparatus, and highly trained fire and medical personnel to ensure rapid, effective response to emergencies.

The path to building Station 144 included challenges, such as identifying suitable land and navigating financial constraints. Following the destructive wildfires of 2020, DMFD acquired property that could serve both communities, reinforcing a

culture of cooperation and resource sharing. In 2023, the district partnered with Willmeng Construction and Perlman Architects, respected firms known for delivering high quality public safety facilities.

Station 144 will play a pivotal role in strengthening local resilience. Faster emergency response times, improved wildfire readiness, and expanded medical services will directly enhance quality of life for residents and businesses. The station will also serve as a hub for community engagement - hosting safety education programs, preparedness events, and outreach efforts that help families protect their homes and loved ones.

Station 144 opened January 12, 2026, ensuring stronger protection for East Desert Hills, West Cave Creek, New River, Anthem, and surrounding areas for years to come.

DOODY DEFENSE SAYS “I DO”

SOMETIMES

LOVE BEGINS quietly—unexpectedly—and yet with absolute certainty.

For Adam, that moment came the instant he saw Karri. Introduced through mutual friends on Facebook, he remembers being completely stopped in his tracks. “I knew instantly we were going to be together,” he says. While her beauty caught his attention, it was her heart that truly drew him in. From that first glimpse, he felt a connection he couldn’t ignore.

Their first date only confirmed what they both already felt. Sitting across from one another at Texas Roadhouse, conversation flowed so naturally it felt as though they’d known each other for decades. The spark was immediate. “God was on my side that night.” When he returned home, overwhelmed with emotion, he told his mom the words he already knew to be true: I’m going to marry that woman.

On December 7, that promise became reality. Their wedding day marked far more than a celebration— it symbolized healing, growth, and faith fulfilled. “It’s about being real,” Karri shares. “Life brings challenges, but growth happens when you do it with God.” Balance, flexibility, and faith anchored the foundation they were building together.

Adam knew the day would move him to tears—and it did. When Karri walked down the aisle, he held it together until the moment she stood before him. “That was it,” he says simply. For Karri, another unforgettable part of the day was having her mother involved in the wedding and sharing the preparation process with Adam—moments she says they’d never experienced before. Asked to describe the day in just three words, Karri smiles: A Perfect Arizona day.

Marriage, they both agree, is rooted in communication. Through premarital counseling at King’s Church, they learned how to identify weaknesses and strengthen their bond through honest

© Best Version Media

conversation. Blending lives later in life comes with its own rhythm, she says, but growth is constant. Like desert blooms after rain, love continues to unfold in unexpected and beautiful ways.

Marriage has also reshaped Adam’s understanding of love. “Life isn’t perfect. We’re not perfect. Love is about being real.”

That same philosophy carries into Adam’s work with Doody Defense. After spending 20 years in upper management at Fry’s, countless conversations with customers in the pet aisle sparked an idea that stayed with him. By 2017, he was ready for change—and Doody Defense was born.

Having Karri by his side has transformed that journey. Adam credits her encouragement, honesty, and unwavering belief in him. “She trusts me,” he says. “She pushes me forward but also keeps me grounded.” Karri believes strongly in integrity and work ethic, values she says Adam lives out daily—not just for the business, but for the example he sets for their family. “This season is about focus,” she says. “Showing what hard work really looks like.”

Looking ahead, Adam is excited about building a new life together. Karri feels equally energized by the future—both personally and professionally. “I’m not done growing,” she says. She’s passionate about inspiring growth in other women and embracing the next chapter with intention and courage. “I’m excited about the journey. I haven’t unleashed it yet—but it’s coming.”

If there’s one lesson they hope others take from their story, it’s this: don’t rush what matters. Stay open, communicate clearly, and build something meaningful— together. As Adam puts it, this chapter is about “the excitement of growing together and the mystery of what’s next.” For Karri, it’s a shared path—many roads eventually becoming one, guided by love, faith, and purpose.

'OHANA ALWAYS

AFTERTWENTY YEARS together, Alysha says her understanding of love has deepened in ways she never could have imagined early on. “My definition of love has changed. I’ve definitely matured in that department,” she shares. “I appreciate the little things more with age and years together.” When she looks back on the early days of her relationship with her husband, Kama, she laughs. “We were really young when we met. It was a very different atmosphere— parties, young and dumb. Now it’s family. That’s it. And growing together.”

For Alysha, long-term love isn’t about grand gestures or perfection—it’s about communication and trust. “Communication is key in any relationship,” she says. “The communication… we’re still working on that,” she adds with a laugh. Two

decades in, they continue learning how to meet each other with honesty and grace, even when it isn’t easy.

Raising two older children has shifted their relationship in meaningful ways. With their kids becoming more independent, Alysha and Kama have had to intentionally refocus on one another. “We realize now that we need to focus on each other more, versus just the kids,” she explains. “We have more alone time than when they were younger.” That transition hasn’t been without challenges. “As women, we take on more of everything, and that can turn into resentment. Communication is harder when you’ve been upset for so long.” But growth has come through awareness and effort. “I voice myself more now. He’s done a lot of improvement—he listens more,

Aloha is more than hello and goodbye; it is love carried on breath and intention - felt in how we show up for one another and the places we call home.

pays attention, notices the shifts. He notices me more. To be seen is to be loved.”

When it comes to the values she hopes her children carry into adulthood, Alysha’s wishes are simple and sincere. “I just hope they find someone who really loves and appreciates them for who they are—and doesn’t want to change them. I hope they find true love.” From watching their parents, she hopes they’ve learned that lasting love requires effort. “It’s not easy. Good things take time, work, and dedication. And they do see that.”

Faith has been a steady foundation in Alysha and Kama’s relationship. “Be slow to anger, quick to forgive,” she says. “Try to be a better person every day. Improve, day by day, one day at a time. Relationships are hard work.” Their spiritual grounding is ever-present in their home. “We all have our spiritual foundation. We connect with God—He is present. He is in our home always.”

Their relationship, she says, has taught her patience and grace. She smiles as she admits, “Sometimes I look at Kama and think, ‘Are you serious?’ But we compromise. I try to be more understanding.”

“Little moments of recognizing—words of affirmation. That’s my love language.” Kama’s, she notes, is physical touch. Together, they’ve learned how to love each other in ways that feel meaningful, not performative.

Community also plays a significant role in their story. Alysha has worked in Anthem for years, at North Valley Water Solutions and Rosati’s, building deep roots and lasting relationships. “We love Anthem,” she says. Years ago while visiting from Hawaii, it was the Anthem Park that captured her heart.

Their Hawaiian roots are woven into everything she values most. “Family is everything. Nothing comes before that—that’s how I raise my children.” She speaks lovingly of 'Ohana

As they look toward the future, Alysha and Kama dream together. “We want an RV and to travel state to state,” she says. Their children have grown up watching their parents hustle, grind, and provide. “They see mom and dad—we work hard, we make it happen, no matter what.”

When asked to define love after twenty years together, Alysha doesn’t hesitate. “Unity. Love means oneness—when two people come together as one and really understand each other.” She describes their relationship as a balance. “It’s a yin and yang. We grow together.” Kama sums it up simply: “Love means loyalty, give and take, compromise. Sometimes it’s me, sometimes it’s her. Understanding. Growth. Willingness to work it out.”

“We look at everything we’ve accomplished with gratitude,” Alysha reflects with pride.

And after twenty years, it’s clear: their love didn’t just last—it grew.

LOVING Your Smile Again

ASMILE

IS ONE of the most powerful expressions we have. It communicates joy, confidence, warmth, and connection—often without a single word. Yet for many people, smiling doesn’t always come easily. Over time, experiences, insecurities, or changes in our teeth can make us hide the very thing that once came naturally. Learning to love your smile again is not just about appearance, but about confidence, self-care, and self-acceptance.

Loving your smile begins with recognizing its value. Every smile tells a story: laughter shared with loved ones, challenges overcome, moments of growth and resilience. Imperfections don’t erase that story—they add depth and character. When you start seeing your smile as part of who you are, rather than something to judge, it becomes easier to embrace it.

For many people, dental work can play an important role in this journey. Whether

it’s a routine cleaning, whitening, orthodontic treatment, or restorative care, investing in your oral health can make a meaningful difference. Dental work isn’t about chasing perfection—it’s about feeling comfortable, healthy, and confident when you smile. Knowing your teeth are cared for can remove hesitation and allow you to smile freely again.

Self-care goes beyond the physical. Rediscovering your smile may also mean letting go of past criticisms, comparisons, or negative self-talk. When you treat yourself with kindness and patience, confidence naturally grows. Smiling becomes less about hiding flaws and more about expressing joy.

When you smile without holding back, you send a powerful message—to yourself and to others—that you are comfortable in your own skin. Loving your smile again is about reclaiming that joy. It’s about showing up as you are and allowing yourself to be seen. And that kind of smile is truly unforgettable.

A FREE Teen Conference to INSPIRE Girls!

CANYOU IMAGINE what it’s like to be a teenage girl growing up in today’s world? Between hormones, social dilemmas, balancing school, sports, activities, and family, it’s no easy task to manage everything. It’s way more challenging than our middle or high school experiences, because social media was virtually non-existent. Today’s fast-moving world has certainly complicated things. Technology has sped life up for all of us, but it’s been extra stressful for girls. It puts so much pressure on young women to look a certain way, compete for attention, and grow up much faster than they need to. It promotes instant gratification, superficial relationships, and external rewards. As a result, girls aren’t typically practicing self-care and are giving away too much of themselves in order to fit in.

In a coordinated effort by Anthem Rotary and I AM Teen Strong, a FREE conference has been planned in Anthem for girls between the ages of 12 and 18. This workshop is called “Rise and Shine,” and it will be an engaging event that is educational, fun, and very empowering. This event is designed to help girls navigate through social situations with more grace and ease while making their health and happiness long term priorities. Our goal for the day is to help young women become more self-aware and intentional so they are equipped to take better care of themselves.

This day will be uplifting. We have powerful speakers that are well versed on mental health, self-love, body image, resilience, and boundaries around social media. This conference will reinforce safety and self-care. Girls will learn how to manage their emotions, evaluate peer pressure, and navigate through uncomfortable situations without dismissing their own needs and values.

The girls are encouraged to lean into their resilience, listen to their inner voice, set boundaries for themselves, and use healthy outlets to resolve their fears and insecurities. Developing these life skills will empower these young women to stay safe and follow their dreams and aspirations.

The speakers booked for this event are extraordinary.

We have Sunny Dawn Johnston, who has traveled the nation to talk about self-love and worthiness. She is a best-selling author and has written 23 books. Sunny reinforces authenticity. She encourages women to stay true to themselves and maintain their own energy. Sunny has a dynamic approach to developing a positive mindset. Her stories are inspirational, and her teachings are illuminating. She helps people recognize their value and love themselves unconditionally.

We also have country music star, Britnee Kellogg. She grew up in Anthem, and as a young girl always dreamed about becoming a country music singer. She recently appeared on the reality TV show “The Road.” Hosted by Keith Urban, Blake Shelton and Taylor Sheridan, the show was a nationwide contest to find the next big country music star. She was a top contender. Britnee is giving back to her hometown and sharing her inspirational journey. Through her story, the girls will learn about overcoming hardships, quieting the noise, and following their dreams.

SHOW YOUR GOLF CART SOME THIS VALENTINE’S DAY LOVE

FEBRUARY

IS AN ideal time to focus on preventative golf cart maintenance. Consistent care not only protects your investment but also ensures safe, efficient operation as usage increases in the coming months.

Start with tire condition and alignment. Tires should be inspected for proper inflation, even tread wear, and sidewall integrity. Incorrect tire pressure can negatively affect steering response, braking distance, and battery efficiency by increasing rolling resistance.

Battery systems require particular attention. Battery terminals should be clean, corrosion-free, and securely fastened. Water levels in lead-acid batteries must be checked regularly and maintained at manufacturer-recommended levels using distilled water only. Charging habits also matter—allowing batteries to fully charge after each use helps prevent sulfation and extends overall battery life.

Brake systems should be inspected for consistent pedal response and stopping power. Any softness, noise, or delayed braking warrants immediate service. Electrical systems—including headlights, brake lights, and turn signals— should be tested to ensure proper function, especially for carts operated on public or shared pathways.

Routine cleaning serves both cosmetic and mechanical purposes. Removing dust, grass debris, and chemical residue helps prevent corrosion on metal components and protects painted and powder-coated finishes. For carts stored outdoors, a breathable, weather-resistant cover reduces UV damage and moisture intrusion.

Finally, listen to your cart. Unusual noises, vibration, or reduced acceleration are often early indicators of mechanical or electrical issues. Addressing these signs early prevents more extensive and costly repairs.

At North Valley Cart Care, we emphasize proactive service over reactive repairs. This Valentine’s season, showing your golf cart a little technical attention ensures long-term reliability, optimal performance, and peace of mind—because well-maintained equipment performs better, lasts longer, and protects its value.

HEY LOVE BUG, WILL YOU BEE MINE?

FEBRUARY IS the season of love and at Precise Pest Solutions we believe your home and business deserve nothing but the best kind of attention. Cold weather may reduce outdoor pest activity, but winter can also drive pests indoors. Pests and rodents are attracted to the warmth, shelter and easier access to food. Without proper prevention, they can make themselves at home and try to settle in and get cozy. Not a love story we are interested in!

Now is the perfect time to prevent the conditions that attract pests before temperatures rise. Seal cracks, eliminate moisture, properly store food and reduce clutter. Most importantly, let Precise Pest Solutions be your valentine and call to schedule service!

• Don’t let pests fall hard for your space

• Show your home some love this Valentine’s Day

• We’ll take care of the pests/bugs, so you can focus on your true loves

LOVE LIVES IN EVERY SCOOP

YOUMAY REMEMBER a time when ice cream wasn’t rushed. When it came in a perfectly round scoop, slid gently onto a cake cone, and tasted exactly the same every single time. Before gourmet mixins and fancy names, there was Thrifty Ice Cream—and for so many of us, it meant childhood.

You may remember standing at the counter, barely tall enough to see over it, carefully choosing between Chocolate Malted Crunch or Rainbow Sherbet while an adult waited patiently behind you. You may remember the sound of the scoop hitting the counter, the feel of loose change in your hand, or the way the ice cream always seemed colder, creamier, and somehow more special back then. Thrifty wasn’t just ice cream—it was an after-school reward, a summer ritual, a small joy that felt like everything.

Today, that feeling lives on at Gold Rush Coffee & Cream, where the past is lovingly preserved one scoop at a time. Walk inside and you’re instantly transported—back to drugstore counters, family errands that ended with a cone, and weekends where time felt slower. The flavors are the same ones you remember, and the first bite still has a way of making you smile without even realizing it.

At Gold Rush, parents introduce their kids to their favorite flavors. Grandparents share stories that begin with “When I was your age…” Friends linger longer than planned, cones melting just a little as memories start to flow. It’s not about being fancy—it’s about being familiar.

Because some things don’t need to change. And when you taste Thrifty Ice Cream again, you may remember exactly who you were the first time you fell in love with it.

In a Relationship with Love : What Caring

Really Looks Like

When Benjamin Ferencz spoke about marriage, he didn’t sound like a man chasing romance—he sounded like a man who had lived it. Ferencz, the last living prosecutor from the Nuremberg Trials, spent more than seventy years married to the same woman. When asked what love meant to him on one of my favorite podcasts, he gently pushed the word aside.

“You can love a piece of cheese,” he said. “Cheese can make you happy. It can bring comfort. You can crave it, enjoy it, even obsess over it. But could you walk through life with cheese? Could you weather loss, growth, aging, and change with it by your side?”

For Ferencz, commitment wasn’t about grand romance. It was about caring—caring enough to show up, to stay, and to keep choosing the same person even when life felt heavy. At 99 years old, he was still working, still contributing, still living with purpose. When asked about retirement, he didn’t talk about golf or slowing down. He spoke only of caring for his wife.

• His words stayed with me.

• Love is a feeling.

• Caring is a commitment.

One thing I’ve learned about relationships is that you can be in love at many different points in the journey. Infatuation often shows up fast. It’s exciting, emotional, and full of sparks. But that version of love evolves. What lasts isn’t the rush—it’s the care, the devotion, and the choice to keep showing up.

Real love deepens through shared experiences, hard conversations, quiet moments, and the simple decision to stay connected even when life gets complicated. My parents are living proof of that.

During a comedy show at The Bearded Barber, my parents were asked by the comedian about their love story. My dad, still completely smitten, shared that it was love at first sight and described the moment he first saw my mom. When she was asked if she felt the same, she smiled and said, “Honestly, it

took me a little longer than it took him.” Not exactly a Hollywood scene—but 59 years of marriage speaks louder than any script. Their love wasn’t built on instant fireworks. It was built on patience, consistency, and caring for each other through every season of life. And that kind of love lasts—not because it’s loud, but because it’s steady.

• Infatuation may change.

• Feelings may shift.

But devotion and care? Those are choices you make—again and again.

In my own life, in my past relationships, I’ve seen how easy it is to focus on the feeling of love while overlooking the daily actions that sustain a relationship. The small moments—listening without interrupting, staying present during tough conversations, showing up when it would be easier to pull away—shape the kind of connection that lasts. Liking someone means you enjoy their presence on ordinary days. It means you respect how they move through the world, how they handle stress, and how they grow through change. It means you can disagree without disconnecting and stay curious about who they’re becoming, not just who they were when you first met. When you like someone, the relationship feels supportive rather than draining. The connection comes from who they are, not just what they provide.

Strong relationships aren’t sustained by chemistry alone. Kevin and I laugh all the time about how we’re getting older together and how our bodies don’t quite work the way they used to—and we genuinely enjoy that part of the journey. We embrace it. Because what keeps us connected isn’t perfection, it’s consistency, emotional availability, and the willingness to stay engaged, even when it’s uncomfortable. Connection doesn’t happen by accident. It grows through intentional choices

Some people spend a lot of time chasing the feeling of love. Others focus on building the foundation of care. The difference shows up in how they communicate, how they handle conflict, and how they protect the connection they’ve created.

Real connection isn’t built on perfection—it’s built on follow-through.

• It’s built on showing up when it would be easier to check out.

• It’s built on choosing to seek understanding over assumptions.

• It’s built on caring more about the relationship than being right.

You can love cheese. You can crave it. You can enjoy it.

But you don’t build a life with cheese.

You build a life with someone you respect, appreciate, and genuinely care for— someone you’re willing to walk beside through change, challenge, and growth.

• Love is the spark.

• Caring is the fire that keeps it burning. And connection? That’s what turns two people into a team.

Love may start with a spark, but caring is what keeps the fire burning. So don’t just fall in love -stay connected. Stay intentional. Stay curious about the person beside you. Because when two people choose to care, day after day, that’s when love becomes something truly powerful.

FORTHE HOLMS, the issue of illegal dumping didn’t start in Arizona—it began more than 20 years ago. Living in California at the time, Dustin remembers driving through riverbeds and seeing refrigerators and appliances abandoned where nature should have been untouched. “I remember thinking how wrong it felt,” he says. “I’d look at it and think, I would haul that away if I could.” Even then, the idea that the land deserved better stayed with him.

Years later, that feeling resurfaced in Arizona. On off-road trips through the desert with his wife, Liz, Dustin saw appliances tossed off cliffs and trash scattered across open land. At that moment the mission became personal—and impossible to ignore.

Rather than complaining online, Dustin took action. A self-described “fix-it-myself” kind of person, he began picking up trash whenever he could. If there was room in the trailer, it went in. “It really didn’t add much effort,” he says, “but it made a difference.” What started as small, consistent effort became a habit—and then a mission.

For Liz, the meaning behind Love Your Desert runs even deeper. “If you don’t take care of the desert, it will be gone,” she says. She has seen entire areas permanently closed off due to dumping and misuse. Once land is damaged beyond repair, access disappears—not just for those who caused the harm, but for families, off-roaders, hikers, and future generations.

In March 2020, Dustin put out a simple call for volunteers, mostly targeting local trades and community members. There was no formal plan—just a question: Can we get out here and make a difference? The response surprised him.

© Best Version Media

“The first one, I didn’t expect anything,” Dustin says. “I just wanted to see.” By the third cleanup, he knew this was becoming something more. What began as individual action was turning into a community-wide effort. Don’t Dump in Our Desert was no longer just about removing trash—it was about shared responsibility and showing up together.

“Seeing the kids is one of the coolest things,” Dustin says. “It teaches them to respect the environment.” While safety is always top of mind, especially for younger children, the involvement of youth has become one of the most rewarding parts of the work.

The most meaningful moments aren’t about the trash itself. “The reward is the final group photo,” he says. One cleanup near Lake Pleasant stands out, where the desert had been used for shooting and littered with debris. As volunteers finished the cleanup, wild burros returned to the water—a quiet reminder of what’s at stake.

With cleanups stretching from Lake Pleasant to Cave Creek, the work has evolved. “Sometimes you’re not just finding trash,” Dustin explains. “You’re finding the leftovers of people’s lives.”

Looking ahead, Liz shares a hopeful vision: “One day, we won’t have to do cleanups.” Dustin hopes to build a network that continues without him—an initiative strong enough to operate on its own. Loving the desert, they believe, starts with taking responsibility for it—today and for generations to come.

ROOTED IN ANTHEM Insurance with Integrity, Community at Heart

SINCE2001, the Justin Simons State Farm Office has been more than just an insurance agency. It has been a neighbor, a supporter, and a proud part of the Anthem area community. From sponsoring local schools and coaching youth sports to helping launch the Anthem Rotary Club, Justin and his team have built deep roots in the place they call home. Giving back isn’t just something they do - it’s part of who they are. “I have a motto I have lived by for almost 25 years, here and that is that I will always support those that support our office. It is an honor to do our part to help keep our community strong,” Justin says.

Justin’s journey to becoming a State Farm agent started with a vision and a passion for service. With an MBA and a successful career as a corporate underwriter, he saw an opportunity in 2000 to pursue a lifelong dream of owning a business that truly made an impact. He was offered the opportunity to establish an agency most anywhere - Hawaii, California, or Arizona - but ultimately, he knew Anthem was the place he was meant to be. By 2002, the doors to his State Farm agency opened, and a new chapter began.

At the heart of the agency is a simple belief: insurance is personal. Justin and his team don’t just provide policies - they provide peace of mind. From car, home and life insurance, everything they do is grounded in integrity and care. The office is powered by people who go above and beyond - like Kari, the incredible office manager, along with Kimberlee, Paula, Desare, Matt, Nicole and Joe, they are a devoted team. They believe their warmth, reliability, and professionalism are what make all the difference for clients.

For Justin, motivation has always been family - creating a life of balance, purpose, and connection. That same motivation carries into the agency. Whether helping clients navigate their coverage or simply sharing stories over the phone, the team believes in providing genuine customer service. Justin is adamant that when you call in, you won’t receive a call center prompt or be transferred to a stranger - you’ll hear familiar voices who know your name and genuinely care.

Justin and his team believe in taking care of the people who make Anthem strong. “I believe there is a large majority of our community that enjoys supporting local businesses. The local businesses are the ones that the surrounding schools reach out to for their fundraising efforts. And I know my fellow small business owners have genuinely made a positive impact on various fund-raising programs throughout our community. I have yet to see any other national insurance company come through Anthem and offer any financial support to our local schools. It is critical and vital that we all realize the importance of supporting each other”

Behind the business is a family that has offered unwavering love through lots of difficult times. Justin met his wife, Nicole, when they were just 19 and 21, working together at a pizza restaurant south of Chicago. Nicole and Justin started out as pizza delivery drivers. Their very first “adventure” together involved Nicole getting lost on her very first, as well as last, delivery - a story that still makes them laugh today. Nicole went on to become a beloved elementary school teacher and now supports the business behind the scenes while running a small social media company.

Their daughter Ava is a junior at the University of Alabama, studying sports media and management. Focused and ambitious, she has made the President’s List and is chasing her dream of becoming a sports agent. Their son Jaxon just finished his sophomore year at Brophy College Prep, and is a dedicated football player with aspirations of becoming a physical therapist. Together, they are a close-knit, sports-loving family built on hard work, laughter, and a deep commitment to giving back to the community they love.
