Teaching notes Australia The Casual Employment Crisis at Australian Universities: What are the HRM Responsibilities? Helen De Cieri and Karin Sanders
Case synopsis Deficiencies in the management of casual workers within Australian universities, particularly regarding underpayment, have led to complaints of exploitation. These deficiencies have been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, as this pandemic caused a huge reduction in international student enrolments, leading to widespread job losses. This case study describes the crisis in Australian universities regarding casual workers, the human resource management (HRM) implications, and lessons to be learned for the capability of universities to survive and thrive. Further, it illustrates the ramifications for Australia‘s ranking on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially on decent work and human rights.
