Instructor’s guide for Lynch et al.: Strategic Management, 10e
Chapter 1 Strategic management What has changed for the 10th edition? Although the main topics of this chapter have not changed, there has been extensive updating of the examples within the text. The chapter still introduces the basic concepts of strategic management and explores why the topic is important. It then goes on to introduce prescriptive and emergent strategy processes. Most lecturers will probably choose to spend some time on the two models linked to these concepts because of their importance to the development of effective strategies. In terms of case material, the Apple/Samsung case is totally new and is a relatively simple strategy case for early in the text. The Wizz Air from the 9th edition then follows. It has been updated to explore the strategic issues after the impact of Covid-19. It remains a relatively simple strategy case that invites the reader to explore and apply the concepts in the chapter. The Kodak case remains unchanged. Importantly, this latter case identifies and lists the key strengths and weaknesses of the company’s strategies. The aim is to assist students seeking to understand in more depth what makes good and bad business strategy.
