Describe the difference between a felony and a misdemeanor. 9. Recognize the relationship between the criminal law and the US Constitution 10. Be familiar with the ethical issues in criminology

SUMMARY Criminology is the scientific approach to studying criminal behavior. It deals with the processes of making laws, of breaking laws, and of reacting to the breaking of laws. Research in criminology is characterized by the use of the scientific method. Criminal justice refers to describing, analyzing, and explaining the behavior of justice agencies. Although the two fields are different, they do overlap. Criminologists must know how criminal justice agencies operate and criminal justice experts must understand the nature of crime. The criminological enterprise has six major subareas. The first subarea is criminal statistics, which describes and measures crime. Next is the sociology of the law that analyzes how society shapes the law and how the law shapes society. The third subarea is theory and theory development, which focuses on crime causation. The next subarea is the criminal behavior systems and crime typologies that focus upon the nature and cause of specific crime patterns. Fifth is penology that deals with corrections, rehabilitation,
