Ask Butch T. Cougar How much do I really need to study?

A rule of thumb is twice the number of credits you’re taking. So if you’re taking 15 credits, you should plan on 30 hours of studying per week. It’s not an exact science, so notice how long things take you and plan accordingly. And use the resources around you. Study with classmates, use a (free!) tutor and meet with your professor. And don’t forget to leave time for fun, exercise, eating and sleeping.

Without sports or PE how am I going to stay active?

However you want to! We’ve got a recreation center on each side of campus that you’ll have access to: Student Recreation Center, Chinook Student Center and Stephenson Fitness Center. There are also a ton of other ways to stay active. Take a fitness class, join an intramural sports team, get a personal trainer at University Recreation (UREC), take a trip with the Outdoor Recreation Center, rent gear for an outdoor adventure or go for a walk through Pullman or a bike ride to Moscow on the Bill Chipman Palouse Trail. It is going to take a bit of ownership from you, so add it to your calendar or invite a friend for some accountability—and company.

What if I don’t get along with my roommate?

For many Cougs, living on campus is the first time they’ll live with people outside of their family. It can be nerve-wracking, but the anticipation is probably the worst part. You might be surprised at how well you DO get along with your roommate. But if you don’t click, that’s okay too. Your roommate doesn’t have to be your best friend. You’ll still have neighbors in your hall or apartment complex that you can connect with. Try to keep an open mind and for those of you in residence halls, know that if things get really bad, your RA will be there to help navigate the situation.

5

I’ve never cooked for myself. Will I eat out of a microwave every day?

No way! We think our dining options are so good, you might not even use the microwave all year—unless it’s to heat up your leftovers, of course. You’ll soon discover that the awesome part about our meal plans is that you can use yours how and where you want on campus. Get restaurant-quality food for every meal from the dining centers, espresso bars and restaurants. Or buy ingredients from the nearest on-campus market, venture into town for a local grocery store or farmers market and start learning some recipes. It’s a great way to hang out with your neighbors. Dining center chefs love to chat about food, so feel free to ask them for tips, too.

I’ve heard Pullman is a small town. Am I going to be bored?

There’s a lot to do if you know where to look. The Pullman Coug Presence app is the first place to keep an eye on. The app lists all the events happening and you can sort by interest. There are hubs of activity on campus where you’ll often find people ready to do things - the CUB, Chinook, Student Recreation Center - so don’t be afraid to walk up and join in. Lastly, there are tons of things to do in the Pullman and Moscow area. There are great restaurants, local events, outdoor adventures, and a shopping mall 10 miles away.

y?

I stud d l u o h s e r e Wh

Sometimes it’s hard to establish productive habits when you’re in a new place. Whether you need a completely quiet spot that’s distraction free, or just a change of scenery, we’ve got you covered. Take the quiz to find your perfect study spot.

Do you get easily distracted by background noise? YES

IN THE MIDDLE

I need complete silence to stay focused.

NO

I need a lively place to study, I thrive in chaos.

Silence is too deafening, I need a little noise.

Do you like to study with other people? NO

I have to be alone, just me, myself and I.

YES

YES

I like to chat and discuss homework with friends when I study.

but only when it’s just me and my study pals with no other distractions.

NO

but I don’t mind being surrounded by other people while I work.

Focus Flow

You have one task, and it’s to get straight to work. The CUB Quiet Lounge: Tucked away in the corner of the CUB for those looking to plug in their headphones and get to work, without noise or distractions. Chinook study rooms: Reservable and private rooms that are great for group projects or your small group of study pals. The Libraries: There are lots of quiet places in the Holland/Terrell Libraries or Owen Library to isolate yourself from distractions and read, review class notes or start writing that paper. Just be sure to check the hours, since they may vary this fall.

The In-between

You are more of a social studier.

Efficient Chaos

You thrive in the hustle and bustle to get work done.

Smith Center for Undergraduate Education (CUE) lounges: A quiet space to get work done in the heart of campus, making it convenient for your schedule when you have time between classes.

The CUB Lair: Camp out all day with easy access to food. If you often take homework breaks and people watch or want to watch TV on the mega screen, then you’ll love this social gem in the heart of campus on the building’s main floor.

Residence hall lounge: Study with your hallmates and bonus—you can do it in your Pj's.

SPARK: Thrive off of the energy coming from the hustling students to the larger than life video wall on the main floor. You’ll get a variety of study spaces from tucked away private corners to open lounges (plus there’s a Starbucks Coffee kiosk here too for that extra boost).

CUB 4th floor student centers: Everyone has access to the student centers, making it a fun place to hang out and meet new Cougs. Introduce yourself to others studying— you might even run into someone in your major. Reunion lounge area: An open café style environment with access to a printer and the perfect spot for people watching between your textbook chapters. Located on the ground level of the CUB.

Chinook main concourse: With the café upstairs and the gym downstairs, you’ll have no shortage of ambient noise. Find a nook, pod or a cozy couch to sink into while you work.

ursing Sophomore*, N sco, WA Hometown: Pa

I was able to get through my first year as a virtual Coug by setting goals and holding myself accountable. A lack of motivation crept in at times but using a planner to stay on track academically has made a huge difference. I use mine every day to stay organized. At the beginning of the semester, I go through each syllabus and write down all the important dates and when everything is due. I’d also recommend new Cougs find an activity to get involved in. WSU has so many diverse clubs and groups, you’re destined to find others with your same interests and goals. For me, being a part of Greek Life has brought me the people that push me to be better as a student. Having people around to motivate me was a big factor that kept me going. *Hailie will be a sophomore in fall 2021. She spent her first year as a virtual student off campus.

10 Ways to

in College

When you’re in Pullman, take advantage of clubs, organizations and activities to make this an unforgettable year at WSU. 1. Join a club

There are over 400 clubs at WSU. You could join a club with a random interest (like laughing club—not kidding), something to do with a major (pre-dental club, anyone?) or something that you’re passionate about (shark conservation club). You can shop for a club and see what they’re about on the Coug Presence app.

CUB LOUNGES

2. Use a tutor or academic success coach

Whether you’re just adjusting to college classes, or your grades aren’t so hot, there’s no shame in seeking out help to make your first semester at WSU easier with a free tutor or academic coach at the Academic Success and Career Center (ASCC) on campus. Free tutoring is offered in most residence hall lobbies and around campus. Or you can sign up for a free virtual session with a peer tutor at the ASCC. If you don’t need class-specific tutoring and are looking for help with general educational success topics like time management, setting priorities or achieving goals, set up some time with an academic success coach who can help create a unique plan just for you.

STUDENT GOVERNMENT

3. If you’re living in a residence hall, get to know your RA

COUG PRESENCE

Your resident advisor isn’t just there to enforce the rules and tell you to be quiet. They know a ton about things to do on campus and can connect you to help if you ever need it.

4. Go to events (and get out of your room!)

There's a lot happening on campus. The number one thing students recommend to make the most of your time in Pullman is to get involved and get out there. So, download the Coug Presence app to see what’s going on—and what events have free food—and go have fun.

5. Explore

Get to know the local scene. There are so many fun outdoor activities around Pullman, Moscow and beyond. Check out awesome restaurants, local festivals and farmers markets, and even plenty of locally owned shops in the downtown areas.

6. Volunteer

There’s no better way to get plugged into your community than to give back. From food banks to area cleanups, the Center for Civic Engagement has loads of volunteering opportunities.

7. Make fitness a part of your routine

Create a habit by adding recreation to your schedule. It’s so much more than working out—take a fitness class, join intramural sports, get a personal trainer, go swimming or take a walk. Just get off the computer and give your brain a break. If you were active in high school, University Recreation, aka UREC, can help you stay active. If you want to get active, this is also a great place to start on campus.

8. Check out special dining events

You don’t need to worry about getting bored with the food in the dining centers. Keep an eye out for special events like wing night, the grilled cheese bar, bibimbap bowls, holiday specials, and more. Have special dietary needs? Connect with Dining Services dietitian, Alice Ma. She can help with suggestions and menu options.

Where to go to

get involved

I’m passionate about our WSU community and want to use my voice. I want to know what’s happening and always be where the action is. I like a smaller group of people I can connect with regularly. I’m not really sure of options, just want to talk to a human and find my people. I believe the best way to get involved with my community is to give back.

9. Hang out in a resource center

If you want to connect with specific communities, check out student resource centers, like the Chicanx/Latinx Student Center, Women's Center or Access Center and many, many more. They have programs, space to chill and study, and generally really cool people you’ll want to meet.

10. Get a job!

Did you know that students who work part-time have higher GPAs and are much more likely to graduate on time? In addition, as a student employee, you can gain tons of valuable skills like time management, leadership and networking skills (super helpful for future reference requests). You will also find on-campus employers to be very flexible and willing to work around your academic schedule. Plus, the extra money isn’t so bad either.

MOSTLY Bs: You’re creative. If you like fashion and design, then joining the WSU Fashion Club or the student-run fashion magazine LUXE is for you. Want to explore how you can contribute toward mental health awareness? Check out Active Minds at WSU or Peer Health Educators. The HOSA: Future Health Professionals WSU Chapter and Hearts for the Homeless are also great ways to help others here in Pullman. Don’t forget to do a self-check and make time for you, too. Try a yoga or CougCycle class through University Recreation to clear your head and focus on your own mental health.

MOSTLY Ds: You love all things sports and thrive in the outdoors and want to make it your life’s work. The Athletic Training Club might be something worth checking out. You’ll find other students like you who are interested in sports medicine—plus, it’s a great networking opportunity. On your off time, the Outdoor Recreation Center offers many outdoor programs and resources for your adventurous side. If you want the best of both worlds, intramural sports or organizations like the WSU Climbing Club or Cougar Crew provide a wide range of ways to get involved and get active.

MOSTLY Es: You are an advocate for the world. If you’re passionate about the environment, there’s plenty of opportunities to choose from. Check out ASWSU Environmental Sustainability Alliance, Developing Sustainable Communities, Water Resources Club, Environmental Health and Safety, and Shark Conservation Club. If you′re an advocate for equity and social justice, hang out in our student centers, become a student mentor for fellow Cougs who care about the same issues or you can teach others as a social justice peer educator. Like journalism and media production? Write for the student newspaper at the Daily Evergreen or get in front of a camera at Cable 8 Productions, Cougar Celli or KUGR Cougar College Radio to make your voice heard.

Living in the residence halls is a great way to kick off your on-campus experience— from making new friends to late-night study sessions with your neighbors. To make your living experience as comfortable as possible, here’s a packing list to help prepare for fall semester.

For your room ☐ Extra-long twin sheets with deep pockets, pillows and pillowcases, and blankets (we recommend an electric blanket for optimum coziness) ☐ Bonus: Mattress pad or foam topper ☐ Storage containers (under-the-bed storage for the win) and clothes hangers ☐ Posters and pictures ☐ You can bring or check out a mini fridge, and some halls allow microwaves (check out the housing website for details and specifics about your hall) ☐ Whatever you need for your awesome setup—video game console, lamps, TV—you know, to make your room feel like home Sorry, don’t bring candles, toasters, air fryers, pets or younger siblings!

For daily life ☐ Comfy backpack. Some days you’ll be out all day; make sure your backpack can hold everything you need ☐ Phone charger or backup battery ☐ Toiletries (your fave shampoo, soaps, shaving kit, etc.) and a bag or bucket to carry them in ☐ Shower flip flops, towels, washcloths and a bathrobe ☐ Dinnerware and cutlery (don’t worry about pots and pans— you can check those out in your hall) ☐ Slippers and Pj's—because some days we all need elastic-waisted pants ☐ Clothes for all types of weather (make sure to gear up for rain and snow—we can have all four seasons in one day on the Palouse) ☐ Thermometer and a first aid kit ☐ Snacks. And more snacks. You can get these on campus too, but we wouldn’t say no to that bulk box of granola bars ☐ Hot air popcorn popper ☐ Slow cooker, pressure cooker (3 quarts or less) or a rice cooker 15

For school ☐ Computer and accessories, like a surge protector and flash drives ☐ Pens, pencils, highlighters, stapler, scissors—you get it ☐ Headphones ☐ Organizational tools like a planner, calendar or time-management app

Hungry?

Fuel your hunger by taking the quiz to explore dining options around campus. Circle the choice that’s calling your name. At the end of the quiz, add up your letters to see which options fit your taste buds. P.S. Don’t be afraid to try something new. Start your day off right with breakfast. a. b. c. d. e.

Pasta and breadsticks Burger and fries Ramen bar Pasta with Tuscan garlic shrimp A BIG salad

Got that late-night craving? a. b. c. d. e.

17

Homemade cookies Savory trail mix Ice cream Veggies and hummus Chips, soda and candy

MOSTLY As: You can’t go wrong with comfort food. Add a little spice to

your day at Carlita’s, located on the first floor of the CUB, specializing in Mexican cuisine (so yum). If you’re close to the north end of campus, swing by the Northside Café and customize your slice of pizza.

MOSTLY Bs: Your taste buds are telling you to head to Southside. The

Southside Café has a rotunda of options; yes, 360 degrees of pure food bliss (puns intended…you’ll get it when you see the round building). And if you find yourself with late-night cravings, such as pizza, pasta and wings, Late Night at Southside has delivery until the wee hours. Night owls make sure you download the GET app for the win.

MOSTLY Cs: Great picks! Head to Freshens located in the CUB. Just

like the name, their items are quite refreshing. Or stop by the Chinook for smoothies and salads of all kinds. And don’t forget the Hillside Café. They have incredible ramen, sandwiches, wraps and an assortment of yummy fresh baked desserts.

MOSTLY Ds: Just rolled out of bed with a small window of time before class

starts? Yeah, we’ve all been there. Book it to Einstein Bros. Bagels, where you’ll find your favorite bagels and coffee. No time to wait? Get a grab-andgo, freshly made meal at The Market on Cougar Way (conveniently located inside the same location as Einstein Bros.), including a coconut yogurt parfait, microwavable meal or a Mediterranean hummus wrap. All perfect choices for those on the go.

MOSTLY Es: You won’t be disappointed with your choices. For that morning

coffee craving, head to one of the many espresso bars all across campus— including a Starbucks in the SPARK building. If you find yourself in the CUB —and, by your picks, it sounds like Panda Express is calling your name—you’ll have access to great food as well, without having to leave campus. Looking for that afternoon pick-me-up? It’s at the Bookie Café, and while you’re there, stock up for those late-night cravings. You know the drill.

WELCOME TO THE PALOUSE Now that you’re a Coug, you are not just headed to Pullman, you’re coming to the Palouse. We’re sure you’ll love this unforgettable land of rolling hills, with green fields of winter wheat in the spring, bright yellow canola fields at summer’s beginning and golden waves of crops in late summer and fall. While you’re here on the Palouse, don’t miss out on what this region offers, like hiking trails, rivers and stunning Palouse Falls. We have rich Native American heritage and, as one of the largest wheat producing areas in the United States, our local farms actually do feed the world. The Palouse spans from Idaho, into Washington and parts of Oregon, bonded by its natural beauty and our love of the Cougs.

ROAD TRIP SCAVENGER HUNT How many can you find on your way to Pullman? Check each box when you see it. Want a chance to win a prize? Take pictures and include them in a multi-image Instagram post using #WSUTogether. But remember—safety first! Only snap those pics when you’re in the passenger seat. ☐

☐

Coug Flag: On a car sticker, on a barn, on a flagpole, doesn’t matter where, you’ll see one.

Rolling golden wheat hills of the Palouse: To others it may seem like any wheat field, but to Cougs…that’s when you know you’re home.

☐

The Palouse Scenic Byway Sign: You’re getting closer.
