Inspired by World Cup’s turf, NFL players want natural grass

fter years of buildup, the FIFA World Cup tournament is now in the rearview mirror. Canada played a major role in the event which saw the world’s best soccer players from 48 countries compete for global supremacy. Canada, the United States and Mexico jointly hosted the tournament with Toronto’s BMO Field and Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium serving as Canada’s designated venues, accommodating a total of 13 games. Weeks have gone by since Spain defeated Argentina in the Cup final, but we’re still talking about the tournament. Much of that discussion has been political in nature, including U.S. President Donald Trump’s intervention to reverse a U.S. player’s suspension after he was assessed a red card penalty during play. But most of the post-Cup talk has come from professional football circles. Several of the U.S.-based stadiums at the World Cup are home to NFL teams, and many of those ordinarily have artificial turf surfaces. Members of the NFL players association envied their home fields’ conversion to natural grass for the duration of the tournament and have wondered aloud why they, too, can’t play regularly on natural turf. grass among NFL players has been made clear for several years, and the recent World Cup tournament has only helped to strengthen their argument for safer playing conditions. In fact, it’s anticipated that the call for natural grass, where possible, inside NFL stadiums that are currently surfaced with artificial turf will be among the discussions during the next round of league collective bargaining talks.

The want to play on natural grass has been made clear for several years Football players who watched the World Cup saw hybrid playing surfaces of predominantly natural grass weather the storm of aggressive play, including sliding tackles and intensive twisting and turning on the spot from cleated feet. They figured if these playing surfaces could withstand the rigours of soccer, they could also stand up to football. The NFL field that has been most trashed over the years among players is MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. which, coincidentally, served as the venue for the World Cup championship game. Its artificial turf surface has been attributed to player injuries for several years. Even covered with a natural grass surface for the World Cup, the field couldn’t @TurfandRec

escape criticism, being called “uneven” by a former elite soccer player-turned media personality. But that’s another story. When some teams have stadiums with artificial turf while others have a natural grass surface, it creates inconsistency. It means at least half of a team’s games are played on one specific surface type. Adapting to the other for some games can be challenging. Footing, ball bounce and other factors may significantly differ from one surface type to the other. Artificial turf is praised for its appearance on television. Over the course of a game’s broadcast, the lines and numbers will be just as sharp at the end of the game as they were at the outset. This is arguably best for the viewer, but it’s the players who are delivering the action we’re tuning in to see. If they’re putting their bodies at risk playing on artificial turf – which almost the entire league agrees is a concern – shouldn’t their wellbeing be top of mind, especially when they’ve signed multi-million-dollar contracts and may be sidelined for much of the season? One would think team owners might wish to consider this. It will be interesting to see how much the type of playing surfaces factor into the next NFL collective bargaining agreement.

Reconfigured B.C. golf course will have new look and feel in 2027 Golfers wishing to play Qualicum Beach, B.C.’s Eaglecrest Golf Course next season will feel like they’re playing the course for the first time. Work to reconfigure the golf course is well underway, and the new-look facility is expected to open for play next spring. Existing fairways are being reshaped, new greens are being created, and the irrigation system is being upgraded among the changes. The municipality’s mayor says the reconfiguration work should improve safety and playability..

City councillor notes extreme temperature ranges in turf types A North Bay, Ont. city councillor is hoping the municipality can devise a policy for safe artificial turf use after having compared the surface temperatures of synthetic and natural grass. The official noted the surface temperature was 50 degrees Celsius on a Sunday at an artificial field where a youth game was being played. That compared to a temperature of 32.7 degrees on a nearby natural field. 6

IA’s Smart Irrigation Month promoted efficient practices The Irrigation Association recognized July as Smart Irrigation Month – an annual initiative to promote efficient irrigation practices and help industry professionals share the message with customers and communities. The 2026 campaign paired ready-to-use outreach tools with a series of Q&A features that highlighted how smart irrigation is practised in real-world settings. Smart Irrigation Month highlighted the environmental, economic and social benefits of efficient irrigation which contributes significantly to the economy and supports thousands of jobs. This year, the campaign placed a strong emphasis on industry storytelling. Throughout July, the IA shared stories across social media, highlighting how industry professionals apply smart irrigation in their work and communities. The campaign’s online resource kits include downloadable promotional materials, social media graphics and media outreach tools that supported local efforts throughout July. Participants could incorpor-

ate these materials into their own marketing and outreach to expand awareness beyond the industry. Wear Blue Wednesday took place on July 15, with irrigation professionals encouraged to share photos on social media using #SmartIrrigationMonth to show their support for efficient water use. “Smart Irrigation Month is an opportunity to recognize the people and businesses advancing irrigation,” Natasha Rankin, CEO of the Irrigation Association, said. “This year’s campaign highlights how smart irrigation is applied in real-world settings, combining practical tools with industry insights to show the measurable value it delivers for customers, communities and the industry.” The campaign continues to focus on equipping professionals with tools they can adapt for their own audiences. By providing templates, graphics and messaging, the IA helps irrigation professionals communicate the value of efficient water use through customer education, media outreach and community engagement.

or one unforgettable week, my entire world revolved around sand. As the communications and projects manager for the Guelph Turfgrass Institute, I spend much of my time teaching, writing, and showcasing the incredible work being done across the turfgrass industry. But until this year, I had never actually worked on a golf course. When TPC Osprey Valley put out the call for volunteers to help prepare the North Course for the 2026 RBC Canadian Open, I tentatively put my name forward to join the agronomy team. I was completely transparent about my lack of ex-

perience. Thankfully, the Osprey Valley team welcomed me anyway. At the first 4 a.m. meeting, I quickly realized there was a place for everyone who showed up ready to work hard. Every extra set of hands meant more time could be spent perfecting the details required to host this PGA Tour event. Superintendents Dave Hunter and Scott Brook led an agronomy team of 82 staff members, supported by assistant superintendents Peter Kemp and Scott Littleton, head mechanic Jason Sharples, plus an additional 27 volunteers. Together, this team worked in unison to prepare every inch of the North Course for championship play while simultaneously main-

taining an additional 18-hole course for golfers. Each morning began in darkness. Headlamps illuminated the fleet as we rolled out of the maintenance facility in a convoy, each crew heading to its assignment. After the morning shift, we grabbed a few hours of sleep before returning for the 4 p.m. afternoon meeting and another evening on the course. Tournament week wasn’t measured in typical work hours; it was measured in sunrises, sunsets, and whatever needed to be done. My assignment? Sand. Every morning I reported to the bunker crew. In the evenings, I filled divots. On paper, my job was one of the simplest on the course, but I took it very seriously. I didn’t want our crew to be called back because of a mistake I had made. I wanted every rake line to be crisp and every divot filled. On that first morning, I felt completely out of my element. I was worried about making mistakes and slowing the team August/September 2026

down. This was a complete departure from my usual workday, which is typically spent in a classroom, laboratory, or office at the Guelph Turfgrass Institute. There, people often come to me with questions. During tournament week, I was the one asking them. In fact, several of the people giving me instructions were graduates of, or even current students in, the programs I teach. Graduates from the turf managers’ short course, the online certificate programs, and the diploma in turfgrass management were everywhere. Throughout the week, people would stop to introduce themselves, tell me which program they had completed, what year they attended, and where their careers had taken them since. “Being on the course before sunrise, seeing the preparation that goes into creating the final product, then walking with the spectators during the tournament was a very cool way to experience the Canadian Open. bit of a boom,” Hicks said. He also acknowledged Tim Fredericks of Fredericks McGuire Ltd. – whose irrigation expertise proved fruitful in the past at the Brantford club – as another key mentor. Kitchen said it’s important to have someone working on behalf of the owner who can challenge all parties involved to produce the best product. “Every project can be bettered by the addition of individuals who have a strong technical skill set and understand the environment such as golf, what the customer wants, what the club wants, and can work to get the best for everybody,” he said. Hicks noted he greatly underestimated the constraints on his time while at Brantford. During a project there, things were happening that shouldn’t have been happening, he said, adding decisions were being made that weren’t in the best interests of the August/September 2026

he seed for founding their own golf consulting firm was planted years ago by the mentor of former superintendents Stephen Hicks and Jordan Kitchen. Formerly of the Brantford Golf & Country Club and the Hamilton Golf & Country Club, respectively, Hicks and Jordan said the idea behind their newly launched HK Golf Services was prophesized by the late John Bladon, principal of The Chimera Group and Turf Prophit. “He (Bladon) started that line of thinking,” Hicks said of his and Kitchen’s new venture into supporting golf clubs through infrastructure projects of various scales. Bladon had forecasted years ago that the two then younger superintendents would one day find themselves in a supporting role within the industry in some form of business, Kitchen noted. Both Hicks and Kitchen had overseen large infrastructure projects at their respective golf courses that were complex and demanding and, upon reflection, said they wished they had the type of support available to them at the time provided by a business like the one they recently co-founded. “In hindsight, it would have been helpful to have someone like what Jordan and I are proposing on the construction side to help supervise,” Hicks said. “Given the cost of things now, it’s somewhat easier to justify having extra help.” Kitchen added, “While we went through that process – and it was fulfilling for both of us – we saw some opportunities where the process could have been improved.”

The benefit of having him or Kitchen being on site is that by walking the property and “seeing things” through visual observations will help “develop opinions and form ideas that you might not see from drone imagery because they’re just not going to pick up on those nuances that you often see at golf courses.” Kitchen said HK Golf Services acts as an “insurance policy,” acting as the eyes and ears for the golf course owner. “It’s to protect your investment,” he said. “One of the benefits to people who want to employ us is that HK Golf Services is professional liability insurance. Keeping algae at bay Making sure irrigation ponds are ready for the onset of algae By Ryan Trollope

y the time an irrigation pond looks like pea soup, the damage is already underway: clogged intake screens, fouled nozzles, oxygen crashes that kill the pond’s ability to clean itself, and odour complaints from the clubhouse patio. The fix is rarely a chemical one. In more than five decades of installing and repairing pond equipment for golf courses and municipalities across Ontario, the pattern we see is consistent – the ponds that stay clean through July are the ones whose aeration was sized and serviced before the May long weekend, not after the first bloom. Summer crash of irrigation ponds An irrigation pond works harder than almost any other water body on the property. It receives nutrient-rich runoff from fertil-

nutrients in the sediment instead of recycling them into the water, supports the bacteria that digest organic muck, and eliminates the stagnant layers where bluegreen algae outcompete everything else.

ized turf, it is drawn down and refilled through the season, and it is usually deep enough to stratify. Once a pond stratifies, the bottom layer is cut off from atmospheric oxygen. Organic matter – clippings, leaves, algae from previous seasons – decomposes anaerobically down there, releasing the phosphorus and nitrogen that feed the next bloom. Warm, still, nutrient-loaded surface water in late June is simply an algae culture waiting for sunlight. Aeration attacks this cycle at the cause. Moving and oxygenating the water column keeps the bottom aerobic, which locks

Size by volume, not acreage The most common sizing mistake we encounter is treating surface area as the whole story. Two one-acre ponds can differ threefold in volume: one averages four feet deep, the other 12. The shallow pond warms fast and needs vigorous surface agitation; the deep one needs the full water column turned over, or the bottom half will stratify no matter how impressive the surface looks. Before spec’ing anything, establish three numbers: surface area, average depth (not maximum depth – a few transect measurements with a weighted line are enough), and the pond’s role. A pond that doubles as a stormwater or drawdown reservoir needs sizing for its full volume, because that is what it holds in spring when the biological reset happens. Surface or diffused? Let the intake decide For irrigation ponds, the choice between a surface aerator and a bottom-diffused system usually comes down to depth and where the intake sits. • Surface aerators excel in ponds up to roughly six to eight feet of average depth. They deliver high oxygen transfer where the biological demand is, create visible movement that discourages surface scum and mosquitoes, and are straightforward to pull for service. • Diffused (bottom) aeration earns its keep in deeper ponds. A shore-mounted compressor pushes air to diffusers on the bottom; the rising bubble columns turn over the entire water column and de-stratify the pond. Because the compressor sits on land, electrical runs are shorter and there is no motor in the water to service. • If the irrigation intake draws from depth, diffused aeration keeps that bottom water oxygenated and free of the hydrogen-sulphide odour and iron staining that anaerobic water carries into the irrigation system. If the intake is a floating or shallow one, keeping the surface clean matters more, which argues for surface aeration or a combination. Plenty of successful installations combine

Long cable runs mean voltage drop, heavier-gauge cable, and real cost. Measure the actual routed distance, not the straight line across the fairway. • Amps and service capacity. Confirm the running amp draw of the unit against what the panel and circuit can actually supply, especially where pump houses already carry irrigation loads. Every reputable manufacturer publishes running amps per model and voltage – hold your supplier to those numbers. • Phase. Three-phase service is not a given at the pond’s corner of the property. Larger aerators in the three-to-five-horsepower class are now widely available in single-phase 240-V versions, which can save the substantial cost of bringing threephase to a remote pond. Conversely, if three-phase is already there, three-phase motors run efficiently, and some packages bundle the control panel. What actually fails – notes from the repair bench The units that come through our repair shop tell a repetitive story, and almost none of it is exotic: • Clogged intakes. Algae mats, weeds, and plastic debris starve the motor of flow and cook it. A bottom screen and a monthly visual check during peak season prevent most of it. • Neglected sacrificial anodes. Units rated for continuous duty carry a zinc anode to protect the motor housing from galvanic corrosion. It is a wear item. Inspect it annually; replace it when it is half gone. • Damaged power cords. Propeller strikes from maintenance boats, muskrat chew, and mooring lines rubbing on cords account for a surprising share of dead units – and cord damage in water is a safety issue, not just a repair bill. Route and moor deliberately and use a GFCI-protected circuit without exception. • Running dry or in ice. Minimum operating depths exist for a reason; a unit that draws air or freezes in will not be covered by anyone’s warranty. Respect the manufacturer’s minimum depth spec and pull or convert equipment before freeze-up. • Skipped spring service. Impellers, seals, and floats want a look every spring before launch. Thirty minutes on a bench in April routinely saves a mid-July failure – which, on an irrigation pond, means the failure happens in the exact week you cannot afford it. The calendar that works Service and launch aeration in April; run it through the season; in fall, either winterize the pond (pull surface units before ice) or keep diffused systems running to maintain a healthy pond under the cap. In our climate, the ponds that skip a season of aeration pay it back with interest. 18
