Turf & Rec is making its foray into the live event business. It’s not entirely our own initiative. Along with sister publication Canadian Rental Service, we’re co-sponsoring an event this September in Calgary that we’re calling the Canadian Rental Mart and Turf & Rec Show.
The Sept. 11-12 event, which will be held at the BMO Centre at the Calgary Stampede Grounds, will be a trade show that will exhibit the latest in equipment for the turf and grounds maintenance industries and rental businesses, and will also include several education sessions.
The Western Canada Turfgrass Association and Alberta Turfgrass Research Foundation have partnered with us for the Turf & Rec portion of the event and will be presenting an education session at which attendees can earn valuable continuing education points.
This an exciting moment for Turf & Rec. It gives us an opportunity to become a more active participant in the industry and contribute to its commerce. It’s also a means to showcase the latest in equipment which turf and grounds maintenance professionals can add to their fleet or be able to rent at the many rental outlets in not only Alberta, but across Canada.
For me, this will mark my debut in becoming actively in-
volved in something other than writing and editing for print and web purposes. I will be on stage to introduce the educational speakers and panelists for the event. It’s something different and which we will endeavor to continue for years to come.
Overall, we’re looking at five separate educational presentations – two aimed at a specific Turf & Rec audience, two that will be directed to the rental outlet audience and one that will resonate with both audiences. The speaker(s) for the latter presentation has yet to be nailed down at the time of this writing, but we’re looking to bring the audience up to date on the status of battery technol-
pire, and words of advice they might have for younger women contemplating a career in the field.
The other presentation aimed at Turf & Rec’s audience will have continuing education credit points available to attendees. This is being co-presented by the Alberta Turfgrass Research Foundation and the Western Canada Turfgrass Association and will be focused on recent advancements in turf research. Topics will include optimizing fertility for robust turf growth, effective herbicide uses for weed management, innovative water conservation strategies, selecting the best available turf species, and advanced diagnostic techniques for turf disease identification.
Presenter for the session is Jason Pick, a turfgrass science specialist at Olds College and a former golf course superintendent.

Oakville, Ont.’s Glen Abbey Golf Club has reopened for play following a massive July flood that put much of the golf course under water.
Staff from RattleSnake Point Golf Club in Milton bolstered Glen Abbey’s crews to get the course back into playing condition.
Water levels subsided daily following the July 16 flood caused by a torrential rainfall that hit the Greater Toronto Area. Golfers were able to play some holes during the week after the storm, but all 18 have since reopened.
Clover lawns are becoming increasingly popular in Saskatoon with many residents purposely planting it.
Residents who have opted for clover lawns are doing so because of their benefits to pollinators. Many lawns are a hybrid of clover and turfgrass.
An official from Early’s Farm & Garden Centre says that a blend of the two cover types is ideal with clover being more resistant to some diseases and grass having greater survivability.
A Corner Brook, NL soccer field has come under fire over a gaping hole on the playing surface that could be an accident waiting to happen.
An uneven patch on the surface at Ambrose O’Reilly field measures two feet long by two feet wide and is four to six inches deep.
A coach with the Corner Brook United Soccer Club’s minor soccer program said the hole could result in a player breaking his ankle or leg if he catches the hazard.

Technology is transforming how managed landscapes are cared for. Equip Exposition, held Oct. 15-18 at the Kentucky Exposition Center, is where the newest outdoor power equipment and most innovative tools for landscape contractors can be explored and tested.

Think ‘up, down and all around’ when fertilizing lawns
By Mike Jiggens
Thinking “up, down and all around” is the key to lawn fertility, lawn care professionals attending Nutrite’s 14th annual lawn care seminar in Guelph were told in March. The message was presented by Dr. Byron Vaughan, owner of Virginia-based Lawns by Dr. Vaughan and a veteran of soil fertility and laboratory soil testing.
When contemplating the number of bags of fertilizer needed for a property, the focus shouldn’t be directed solely at nitrogen, he said, noting a balanced nutritional program is required.
“You want to get the big three right before considering the others that can enhance the turf,” he said.
Nitrogen is thinking “up” as it kicks in top growth. Phosphorous helps with root growth, requiring lawn care professionals to think “down,” and potassium is an “all around” nutrient that “makes everything better.”
The key to knowing how much of the primary nutrients are required as well as what secondary elements are needed is to sample soil consistently at the same time each year and to go deep, Vaughan said.
“Many of these nutrients are in those one or two inches.”
Sampling depth should also be consistent from year to year, he said, noting

phosphorus is sticky and tends to stay at the surface.
“The point behind soil testing is looking at the trends. Are your soil test levels going up every year? Are they going down or going sideways?”
Soil test levels that fluctuate up and down could be indicative of whether clippings are bagged or left on the lawn,
Vaughan said.
“If you’re tracking your soil test levels, you’ll be able to see. Are you putting on more than what’s being removed?”
He said if 150 pounds of clippings are produced per 1,000 square feet, the amount of fertilizer required depends on the uptake. Considerations include the rate at which grass is growing, whether a

lawn is in shade or full sun and if the lawn is irrigated or not.
“What are the factors that are driving the biomass production? When you produce a lot of biomass, you’re taking out a lot of nutrients.”
Vaughan said the average yearly uptake is six pounds of nitrogen, 1.4 pounds of phosphorus and 5.4 pounds of potassium.
Full sun produces the most biomass and will lower soil test levels. Shaded areas will have higher soil test levels because biomass production is much less than in areas of full sun. “Happy grass” is the result of irrigation and the overapplication of nitrogen, he said.
“If you start putting out a lot of nitrogen, especially in that springtime frame, you just really load it up.”
Mowing direction and clipping discharge can skew test results. Vaughan said many commercial mowing businesses that work on larger properties tend to discharge everything toward the middle of the yard the first two or three rounds and then discharge toward the curb or driveway in subsequent rounds. The weakest areas of a lawn are often next to sidewalks and curbs because
“Stop bagging! That is free fertilizer.”
discharging is being done toward the middle of a yard. The yard’s edges tend to be the most stressed. When fertilizing, efforts must be made to minimize how much gets onto the street or other hard surfaces, he said.
“Stop bagging! That is free fertilizer. If you’re bagging, you lose colour quality and overall vibrancy of the turf.”
Getting the “greening without the growing” when maintaining cool season grasses can be achieved in various ways such as using slow-release nitrogen, plant growth regulators or adding iron.
“The worst thing to do is put on soluble urea. That will just jack this up.”
Using starvation as a plant growth regulator and not feeding the turf is ill advised, Vaughan said.
“If I don’t feed my kids so that they quit growing out of their clothes, I’m going to have some other problems. It’s the same concept.”
When starvation is exercised, red thread, dollar spot and other diseases are apt to follow, he said.
Nitrogen is the nutrient required in the largest quantities. Its key role is to regulate growth. The more nitrogen that is applied, the more growth can be expected. Nitrogen “spoils us” in terms of the colour it produces, but it’s prone to being lost in the environment. With urea, the first loss realized is volatilization when it’s applied on the surface on a warm spring day. It “melts” a little and goes into the atmosphere with the help of a drying wind.
Vaughan said research suggests 50 per cent of urea can be lost before it has a chance to get into the soil. A urease inhibitor can minimize the process.
“Don’t store your fertilizer dollars in the soil. You’ve got to spoon feed it and give it a little bit every day.”
Applying small, frequent amounts of fertilizer or using a time-release product are the better options over putting down a quick-release product, he said, adding returning clippings to the soil can reduce fertilizer amounts by about 25 per cent.
Acknowledging the propensity of phosphorus to pollute water, Vaughan said it’s a needed nutrient, but it shouldn’t be overapplied. It helps with root growth, top growth vigour and overall health, but should stop being applied when soil test levels are high, he said.
Potassium improves winter hardiness
and allows turf to better cope with drought, stress, root wear and disease. It also plays a key role in the stimulation of carbohydrate production.
“Now you’re able to weather that summer stress that we’re all inevitably going to go through or the stress from the excess traffic and drought.”
Summer stress is caused by a combination of heat, high nighttime temperatures and humidity. When there’s heat but no humidity, such as in drier climates, the plant can cool itself. When humidity is present, the plant fails to do so. Summer stress leads to lawn thinning and a loss of colour. An adjustment in mowing height can help.
“When it gets hot, raise it up. The easiest thing to do is to just let the tall grass shade the ground, cool off the soil and give it a break.”
Timing of irrigation is critical, Vaughan said, adding the extension of leaf wetness should be avoided.
“If you extend the leaf wetness period by just two hours, you can get a biological explosion of diseases.”
When watering in the morning, leaf wetness is extended because dew has just burned off. He said it’s possible to get away with morning irrigation in the spring, but in the heat of summer – especially when it’s humid – “it will blow up on you. If you water in the day amid the heat and humidity and with no air movement, in a few days you’ll wonder what happened to the yard.”
Vaughan said the months of July and August are typically when lawn care companies field the most calls from customers, who wonder what has happened to their yards.

In the green industry, attention to detail can mean the difference between a healthy, vibrant turf surface and a patchy, stressed one. Among the wide selection of tools and techniques available, an often overlooked yet crucial factor is the sharpness of mowing blades. A sharp mowing blade is not just a nice-to-have; it is an essential component of effective turfgrass management.
When it comes to mowing, the goal is to achieve a clean cut. Sharp blades slice through grass cleanly, whereas dull blades tear and shred the grass. This isn’t ground-breaking research; the science was published by Steinegger et al back in 1983! In that study, completed at the University of Nebraska, a rotary mower was used to cut Kentucky bluegrass and the dull blade led to reduced turf quality, a straw-coloured appearance on the cut edge, and increased fuel usage. Sharp blades require less power to cut through grass, making the mower operate more efficiently. It required 22 per cent less fuel to cut the same area of grass with a sharp blade compared to a dull one!
Because sharp blades cut more effectively, they can reduce the need for multiple passes over the same area and save

significant time, particularly on larger properties. Maintaining sharp mowing blades goes beyond just a cleaner cut, it also leads to reduced wear and tear on the mower. Consistently using sharp blades can prolong the life of your machine. Dull blades can cause the engine to work harder, leading to increased maintenance and potential early failure of parts.
A clean cut minimizes damage to the grass blades. Torn and shredded grass leaves are more susceptible to diseases and pests because the jagged edges provide entry points for pathogens. Clean cuts heal faster and reduce the likelihood of infection. It was hypothesized by Robert Emmons in 1995 that a dull mower blade shreds the tissues, weakening the plant and leaving a greater amount of wounded tissue for pathogen invasion. This theory was tested by Ellram et al in 2007, but they were unable to find a difference in dollar spot incidence with sharp versus dull blades. However, the theory still stands up to the test of common sense!
Grass blades are like mini solar panels. When the leaves are torn by a dull blade their surface area is reduced, hindering the plant’s ability to absorb sunlight and produce food. This can lead to stressed plants with less vigour and colour. From an aesthetic standpoint, a turf mowed with sharp blades looks uniformly green and well-manicured. In contrast, a surface mowed with dull blades can appear yellowish or brownish because of the shredded leaf tips. It is crucial to recognize when your mowing blades need to be sharpened. Here are some telltale signs:
• Frayed grass tips: After mowing, inspect the grass tips. If they appear frayed or shredded, it is a clear indication that your blades are dull. It is important when working with stands of Kentucky bluegrass in the spring, not to mistake the stems that form during

the seeding phase with leaves. These thicker parts are difficult to cut and can have a shredded and tantipped look even with sharp blades and reels.
• Uneven cuts: Dull blades can result in uneven cutting, where patches of grass are longer than others.
• Increased resistance: If you notice that your mower is struggling more than usual or that you need to mow the same area multiple times for an even cut, the blades are likely dull.
• Off-colour: A turfgrass surface that takes on a yellow/brown colour shortly after mowing is a sign that the grass tips are being torn rather than cleanly cut.
In a study by Pirchio et al. (2018) on tall fescue, an electric mower operating at 3,000 rpm caused more ripping and tearing damage to the grass compared to a similar electric mower running at 5,000 rpm. This shows that the higher speed of mower blades provides a cleaner cut, minimizing the damage to the grass blades. This may have also been an effect of the blade’s

ability to create lift, pulling more air upward to stand the leaf blades up for a better cut. Additionally, the study found that applying 200 kg/ha (4 lb/1,000 square feet) of nitrogen fertilizer annually reduced leaf tip damage more effectively than applying 100 kg/ha (2 lb/1,000 square feet) of nitrogen. Nitrogen fertilization helps to keep the leaf tissues more turgid and less stringy, which in turn reduces leaf shredding during mowing. Thus, both the mower blade speed and the level of nitrogen fertilization play significant roles in maintaining the health and appearance of tall fescue grass by minimizing mechanical damage during mowing.
• Regular sharpening: Depending on the frequency of use, blades should be sharpened as soon as signs of dulling appear. It is difficult to put a number of hours on this as many factors contribute to dull blades and can differ from site-to-site. It is common for operations to have multiple sets of blades for each cutting unit to save downtime by being able to swap sharp blades for dull ones without having the mower out of service while sharpening. As a point of reference from the golf side, where putting green cut quality is paramount, reels may have

their cutting edges touched up after only a few hours of cutting
• Proper technique: Use a file, sharpening stone, or specialized blade sharpener to hone the edges. Ensure you maintain the correct, factory-set angle. To do this when sharpening with a griding wheel, make sure the shiny metal is between the edge and the top of the blade and continue until the whole face has been ground. If using a file, keep it flat against the face the entire time so the shine is across the whole face while removing metal. Safety note: when sharpening blades wear sturdy gloves as there will be a razor-like edge formed if you do it right. If you’re unsure of how to do this, ask a professional!
• Balancing the blades: After sharpening, it is crucial to balance the blades. An unbalanced blade can cause vibrations that may damage the mower and result in uneven cuts. Use a blade balancer or even a nail on a wall to check for balance.
• Inspecting for damage: Regularly inspect blades for nicks, bends, or cracks. Damaged blades should be replaced, as they can be dangerous and ineffective.
“Turf mowed with sharp blades looks

• Cleaning the blades: After each mowing session, clean the blades to remove grass clippings, dirt, and debris. This prevents buildup and potential rust that can dull the blades as well as cause the blade to become imbalanced.
The cost of neglect
Neglecting to maintain sharp blades can have significant consequences. Inefficiency caused by dull blades can lead to higher fuel costs, more frequent mower repairs, and potentially even the need for new equipment sooner than expected. It also increases fuel consumption and emissions, contributing to a larger environmental footprint. For professionals in the lawn care industry, the appearance of the turfgrass you maintain is a direct reflection of your service quality. Dull blades can lead to unsatisfactory results, potentially costing you clients.
In the competitive field of turfgrass management and lawn care, the details matter. A sharp mowing blade is a small but crucial component of turfgrass management. Regular maintenance and proper care of your mowing blades not only benefit the grass but also contribute to the longevity of your equipment and the satisfaction of your clients. In the end, a sharp edge on your mower blades can
make all the difference.

Large contractors, however, are still looking into what makes the most sense for them. By Mike Jiggens
Battery-powered landscaping equipment sales overtook the sales of gasoline-powered equipment for the first time in 2023, those attending a spring webinar that focused on “demystifying battery power” were told.
The Lawn & Landscape-produced webinar featured the insights of Chuck Bowen, vice-president of communications and member relations with the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), and Cheryl Mailloux, global market segment manager at Anderson Power – a company specializing in power connector space for electric outdoor and power equipment performance.
“Battery equipment has continued to take market share,” Bowen said, noting consumers were the first adopters of electrification, especially with hand-held equipment. “We’ve seen battery adoption and electric adoption lag in larger commercial equipment. The technology is there. I think a lot of contractors are still evaluating
what makes the most sense for them. It’s clearly the issue of the moment and is something everyone is thinking about.”
Mailoux said that when Anderson Power began working with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), several professional concerns were identified, prompting the need to develop new products that were safer and more reliable when used in the field.
“When you put it together as a complete system, you need to ensure that the wires are sized appropriately for the amperage and, if you’re dealing in sealed connectors, that those hold a little more heat in the environment and ensure safety,” she said.
Mailloux said Anderson’s quality department certifies products to ensure they’re appropriate for the application and the environment in which they’ll be used.
OPEI helps end users of battery-powered products understand such matters as design, charging infrastructure and material sourcing from a manufacturing standpoint.
“We’re here to help them all have a forum to discuss those major challenges and opportunities,” Bowen said. “I think battery power has allowed our manufacturers to really add a lot of complements to their product lines.”
He added he doesn’t see traditional gasoline-powered products going away anytime soon but said battery power provides end users with ample choice.
Anderson Power has been working with OEMs in California to prepare them for the state’s CARB (California Air Resources Board) initiative which mandates a reduction in air pollutants. The initiative begins this year and has led to other states adopting similar measures.
“Across the globe, this is a big concern that people need to be aware of, and they need to get their equipment up to speed which can take two to three years to be certified,” Mailloux said, adding Anderson works with OEMs to not only prepare them for the new laws and regulations, but to
ensure there is ample time to have their products ready for market and that they meet all quality and safety aspects.
Reason for equipment failures
She said 90 per cent of battery-powered equipment failures in the field are due to improper crimping of wires or those that were inappropriately sized to meet the required amperage or voltage of the system. Systems that are holding in heat must account for ambient temperature or environmental changes.
Anderson works with the OEMs so that they select the proper connector for the application, ensuring safety and reliability.
A common concern about battery-powered equipment is what happens to the battery once it has reached the end of its lifespan. Bowen said battery is a relatively new power source for landscaping equipment and there are several legal and regulatory questions that must be answered. He noted OPEI is working with several recycling groups to ensure the safe collection, disposal and recycling of batteries.
“Just because a battery is a 12-volt battery, if it’s not designed by the manufacturer in the manner for which that system was designed, you could be causing issues with the entire system if you’re not using certified or appropriate equipment that is designed for

A landscaper uses a battery-powered trimmer at a job site.
that application or that system,” Mailloux said.
Bowen added that as all gasolines aren’t alike – some have ethanol content, for example – and the same is true of batteries.
“Knowing what you’re putting in the tank and knowing what you’re putting on the charger is tantamount,” he said.
OPEI’s Equip Expo, held each October in Louisville, Ky., has featured battery-powered equipment since virtually the trade

show’s inception 40 years ago. The technology has skyrocketed since the show’s beginning and today includes robotic and autonomous products. Technological advances have allowed contractors to start work earlier in the morning and later in the evening, enabling them to secure such accounts as hospitals and schools where noise ordinances prohibit the use of gasoline-powered equipment during those hours.

In the early years of battery power, Anderson Power determined various products’ needs through field testing and trial and error. Such needs included the products’ protection against dirt, water and grass clippings. The company determined what needed to be sealed against the environment to ensure better performance, safety and reliability. This included making sure wires were appropriately sized for the connector.
Mailloux said that for safety assurance, products must meet the needs of the application as well as environmental factors. A small commercial lawn maintenance company might have systems running 12 hours a day and up to six or seven days a week.
“They want to be assured that the reliability of the product as well as the safety and the infrastructure is there,” she said, adding commercial contractors are slower to adopt the technology because of the infrastructure needs.
Bowen said one of the most frequently asked questions among commercial contractors is how they can adjust their infrastructure to be effective while maintaining their costs.
“It’s a very significant investment to power a commercial fleet,” he said, adding it tends to be an important issue for larger contractors.
Although lithium-ion batteries are the norm, other forms of rechargeable batteries are being researched, including those that are cobalt-based, but the technology is still in its infancy, Mailloux said.
End users have expressed concern that batteries might change after significant investments have been made in charging equipment.
“I don’t think the industry or the market will want to do that in a short period of time,” she said. “It’s a huge investment to get involved with that.”
Lithium-ion technology has existed for several years, but it’s been relatively recent that it’s taken off on a global scale.
Bowen said as the technology evolves, chargers must become as standardized as possible.
“From a design standpoint, we have to be looking at how can we fit and meet the expectation of the market or the OEMs’ application and be the smallest footprint possible, but still allow for safety and reliability,” Mailloux said.

On a worldwide level, countries are treating battery power differently. Some are using metric wire measures while others are using U.S. standard. India has adopted a program in which batteries can be swapped out in the same manner that’s being conducted with propane tanks in North America. Some countries are progressing faster than others with battery technology.
“It comes down to the size and the amount of space we’re designing for,” Mailloux said.
Bowen said the industry is working on charging standardization and believes it will eventually get there.
But battery is not the “silver bullet” that many regulators portray it to be, he added.
“There are a lot of questions that still need to be answered as we talk about charging and recycling and even supply chain,” Bowen said, adding people in the automotive industry claim there isn’t enough lithium in the world to power the cars manufacturers want to build. “But it certainly is a very exciting time for the industry.”
Mailloux said Anderson Power strives to get on board with OEMs as close as possible to the start of a project.
“The reason for that is by the time you build out your system, they start thinking about the applications for the battery and the charger,” she said. “Being involved with them earlier on in their project and ensuring that we can meet their timeline, and from a supply chain globally, can we meet their expectation? Just understanding those timelines alone from a supply chain can be very difficult, so working with them early in the process can ensure that we both come to market in a timely manner.”
Mailloux said battery technology must continue to evolve, adding there is still a long way to go when considering safety and reliability.
Although there are several dealers who are resistant to battery power and many others who have embraced it, the technology won’t be taking over tomorrow, webinar moderator Glenn Hansen, editor of OPE+, said.
But the market is clearly moving in the direction of battery, Bowen said.
“Our message is that this is a great technology,” he said. “There are still some questions that need to be answered and discussed. But it does allow for a more complete spectrum of power availability and use cases for all of the customers that exist.”
Bowen said OPEI’s point is that end users should have what is needed for the job –battery or gasoline-powered equipment –depending on the size of the job and the time it takes to be completed. With safety and performance at the forefront, the organization focuses on what makes the most sense for each end use customer.

Using too little or too much water will have profound impact on plant growth.
In recent years, a shift has begun toward the adoption of electric equipment. This shift is not only a response to the pressing need for more environmentally friendly options, but also a strategic move to leverage the many benefits that electric technology offers.
While landscapers and turf managers have had electric options for handheld tools and lower horsepower machines like mowers for years, fully electric, battery-powered heavy equipment like compact wheel loaders and excavators is still new.
As the industry navigates this transition, the equipment and charging solution manufacturers want to help you make the best decisions possible. Let’s look at some of the reasons to consider electric equipment, how to incorporate it into your fleet, and what actual users are already up to.
As stricter emissions regulations become more prevalent, we all feel the push to re -
duce our carbon footprints. There are also a growing number of private companies with their own sustainability goals and voluntary carbon reduction programs that your organization may participate in.
Electric heavy equipment is a viable solution that’s available now; and by making the switch today, you can meet current standards and be ready for whatever comes tomorrow.
Advancements in battery technology and electric motors have propelled electric heavy equipment into the landscaping industry. Here’s what that means for you:
Cost savings: One of the most compelling reasons to consider electric equipment is the potential for some serious savings on its total cost of ownership. No fuel costs and greatly reduced maintenance costs can significantly offset the initial investment. You may also be able to leverage tax incentives and grants that promote eco-friendly practices. And, because the tech is still new and different, many manufacturers are of-
fering flexibility in how to acquire these machines – more on that later.
Impressive performance: As you probably know, compact excavators and wheel loaders are useful in grading, digging, loading material and much more. The ability to get more work done than you could with handheld tools is a huge advantage that can win jobs and reduce injuries. And if those machines are electric, that advantage only grows.
If you’re worried that electric machines won’t be as powerful as diesel, you’re wasting energy (pun intended). The specs of many compact electric machines are nearly identical to those of their diesel equivalents. Plus, they provide instant torque, so there is no delay like you might feel on a diesel machine. This consistent power output ensures reliable operation, helping you tackle demanding tasks with ease and precision.
Caring for the environment: The most obvious advantage of electric heavy machinery is the elimination of emissions and fumes. Minimizing noise pollution is also
beneficial in sensitive environments like parks and golf courses. People nearby will hardly notice electric machines on the job, and workers can easily talk over them. The lower noise and vibration have made a lot of operators happier because they are less fatigued at the end of the day.
Charging is admittedly where there is the most room for improvement, but it’s not as bad as you might think.
If you’re able to plug in at the machine’s home base, the best choice is a 240-volt, Level 2 AC setup, which is the same as for electric cars. It’s also fine to charge on a standard household outlet, but it will take quite a bit longer. Think of it like filling your car with gas – it goes much faster with a fuel pump than with a small gas can.
There are also portable options like offboard DC fast chargers and solar-powered chargers if you need to take the power source to the machine instead of the other way around. These solutions are getting better and more prevalent every day.
As for how long a charge will last, it depends on what you’re doing. If you’re doing tougher work like cutting and grading, you may need a quick charge at lunch. If you’re using the machine intermittently or in lighter applications, a charge can probably last all day.
A major perk to keep in mind is that electric machines do not idle. When the operator pauses (for example, to wait for someone to put in a tree they just dug a hole for), the machine turns off, saving battery life.
With diesel equipment, operating time is defined by the engine runtime, and a lot of those hours are counted while the machine is idle. So, an eight-to-10-hour workday on a diesel machine accumulates the full eight to 10 hours, while an electric machine would only add the fraction of those hours that it’s actually in use.
Another key comparison with diesel machines: much simpler maintenance. For one thing, DEF and filters are not needed. Essentially, all you need is grease and hydraulic oil. This is much different than a conventional machine that requires fluid, filter and component checks as often as every day, with additional cyclical preventive fluid and filter maintenance.

increasing germination.

There is no difference in the maintenance of non-electric components like hydraulic pumps and hoses. However, before performing maintenance on the non-electrical components, a risk assessment process is required, just like it is for the electrical components.
Overall, the lifetime of battery-electric components should be equal to or better than that of the diesel engine on a conventional machine. My company conservatively estimates that users will see a 35 per cent savings in maintenance costs and time over the life of the machines we offer. And warranties for electric components can provide extra peace of mind.
The best advice when considering incorporating electric equipment into your operation is to look beyond the sticker price, because the total cost of ownership helps make up for

a higher-priced machine. Lower maintenance costs and fewer operating hours mean reduced wear and tear and preservation of residual value. Plus, there’s the value of being able to do work you couldn’t do before if noise or emissions were a problem.
That all applies most directly to buying, but there are other routes you can go:
Renting is often a cost-effective solution for short-term projects or seasonal demands. This also allows you to test out the equipment before making long-term commitments, and you can rent various types of charging equipment to see what works best for your specific situation.
Leasing offers flexibility in equipment upgrades and mitigates risk. Perhaps you aren’t sure if it will be the right fit, or you worry there may be advances in the near future that you’ll want to switch to. If you finance with companies that understand the machines and how they’re used (like the

info@skynets.ca www.skynets.ca

manufacturer), they can help put together the right package. Ideally, that would also include maintenance, a warranty and charging solutions. Just keep in mind that when you lease equipment, you don’t build equity, which means you won’t have an asset to sell or trade in when you no longer need it.
If you’re the type that needs to “see it to believe it,” here is a relevant use case.
An example was at the Toronto Zoo. The team there used an electric compact excavator to do some work inside a bison enclosure, which usually agitates the animals to the point that they begin to cry out. Because the machine was so quiet, the operator was able to work for three hours without irritating the bison.

By CCOHS
The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) promotes the total well being of workers in Canada by providing information, training, education, systems and solutions that support health and safety programs and injury and illness prevention. www.ccohs.ca
Your work may be seasonal, but one thing remains the same year-round – the vital role personal protective equipment plays in keeping landscapers and groundskeepers safe from injury and illness while at work.
From operating heavy machinery to handling sharp tools, and working in all kinds of weather conditions, workers can be exposed to many hazards. These put them at risk for cuts, eye injuries, burns, amputations, noise-induced hearing loss, and sprains and strains.
Having an effective personal protection program in place that outfits workers with the right safety gear for the job can help prevent these injuries. Here’s how to get started.
When planning or expanding a personal protection program, consider the hazards unique to your workplace, and assess the risk to your workers. The program should evaluate all measures to protect your workers, with personal protective equipment as one part of an integrated approach to health and safety.
Examine work practices, procedures, equipment, products and job sites for possible hazards, and pay particular attention to tasks that require more than one piece of protective gear. When selecting safety gear for a job, ensure it matches the hazard. The equipment should also meet the health and safety laws, regulations, standards, and guidelines set out by your jurisdiction, as well as personal protective equipment suppliers and manufacturers.
As an employer, you are responsible for providing workers with education and training on when personal protective equipment is needed, how to maintain and clean the gear, and how to wear it properly so it is effective. In some jurisdictions, you may also be required to cover the cost of the equipment.

Be aware some personal protective equipment may not be compatible. For example, safety goggles can change how a respiratory mask fits, leaving workers exposed to risk. Compatibility may vary for each worker, which is why it’s important to involve workers in selecting their safety gear and to fit test each item. This will also make sure the personal protection is comfortable to wear, making it more effective at reducing risk.
As part of your program, make sure you frequently inspect personal protective equipment. If there are signs of deterioration or damage, remove the equipment from service immediately.
Remember to review your program regularly. Comparing safety performance data can help to determine the effectiveness of your program, and areas that need improvement.
Wearing head protection, like hard hats, is key to preventing head injuries from falling branches and debris. It should be worn when operating equipment, such as chainsaws and hedge cutters.
Safety glasses and goggles shield the eyes from dust, debris, and flying objects, which may occur when trimming, mowing, breaking up rocks or concrete, and when using power tools, strong cleaning agents, and spraying or dusting. Face shields can also provide added protection against flying particles.
Earmuffs help to reduce risk of hearing damage caused by loud machinery such as lawnmowers and leaf blowers. When wear-
ing a hard hat, foam earplugs may be more suitable. Check the occupational health and safety legislation in your jurisdiction to ensure you are meeting guidelines around occupational noise exposure limits.
Fit-tested respirators are essential when working in dusty environments or handling chemicals like pesticides and fertilizers. They help to prevent the inhalation of harmful particles, and should also be used when cutting pavers, flagstone, or concrete.
Sturdy, well-fitting gloves with a grip protect against cuts and abrasions when handling sharp objects and plants. Chemical-resistant gloves and aprons should be worn when working with fertilizers and pesticides, and vibration-absorbing gloves can help prevent hand-arm vibration syndrome and damage to the central nervous system when operating vibrating tools and equipment.
Workers should also wear high-visibility, reflective clothing when working near roadways, in low-light conditions, or around people using large equipment. Lightweight long sleeves and pants can protect against insects like ticks, as well as ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat also protect against ultraviolet rays.
Lastly, steel toe safety shoes that are cutand impact-resistant protect the feet against heavy equipment and falling objects. They also provide support when treading uneven ground, helping to prevent sprains and falls.
Personal protective equipment is so much more than a worker’s uniform. It’s a lifeline to ensuring the short- and long-term health, safety, and well-being of your workers – whether tending to a lush landscape in summer or removing ice from a turf in winter.
When coupled with a comprehensive personal protection program that includes fit-testing.
