The Future is Here

The 2026 edition of the Canadian Mechanical and Plumbing Expo (CMPX) promises to bring together the entire HVAC/R, plumbing and water treatment supply chain in one place, featuring more than 500 brands stretching from global leaders to local innovators, all featuring technologies that will be shaping the future of mechanical and plumbing design, installation and service.

Because of its two-year cycle CMPX makes up for lost time by packing a lot into three days. Occupying the South Building at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre with its massive below ground trade show floor and plenty of educational break-out room spaces, this year’s event will be hosting over 100 educational opportunities – most of them free with registration.

Jointly produced by the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) and the Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating (CIPH), CMPX is recognized as an essential industry event designed to lift the overall proficiency of the mechanical industry across the nation.

This gathering provides opportunities for community building, through networking with old friends and making new long-term connections. Together the HVAC/R and plumbing industry across Canada continues to build.

“CMPX 2026 brings more than 13,000 HVAC/R, plumbing and water treatment professionals together in one place,” said Joanna Woo, CMPX Committee Chair for the second time.

“It’s where you’ll see the latest technologies, connect with industry leaders and peers, learn from trusted experts, and prepare your business for what’s next. From strengthening relationships to discovering the innovations shaping our trades, CMPX is where it all happens.”

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

THE REALITY IS, WE DO NOT RECEIVE MANY LETTERS TO THE EDITOR, SO WHEN AN ENVELOPE ARRIVES ON MY DESK, I open it with great joy. Unlike social media with its instant feedback (hearts, thumbs up or fire emoji), in the magazine business, once an issue is complete the feedback loop is slow.

Well, a letter arrived last month, and folded up inside the envelope was a page from our December 2025 issue (page 10 to be exact). It was a news article about how a group of industry associations traveled to Ottawa to share a six-point plan with federal government officials. Among those plans was a call for $5 million in government funds to support a communications effort to educate Canadians on the importance of indoor environmental quality (IEQ).

That paragraph was circled in black marker, and the word “Nuts” was written overtop, along with a short note: “Spend on rebates if giving it away!”

First, let me say, “Thank you” to whomever it was that took the time to tear out a page of our magazine, make a comment, stuff that into an envelope and then post it. Although you wish to remain anonymous, I am glad I was able to share your thoughts with the rest of our audience.

Government spending to benefit the industry often brings up mixed emotions. Rebate programs can lead to boom-and-bust cycles for technologies (think back to solar or geothermal). And the recent Greener Homes initiative saw grant and loan programs ramp up and then expire, leaving both homeowners and HVAC service providers struggling just to keep up with what was available, when, and where.

One positive side effect of those rebate programs was how they elevated the profile and general consumer knowledge of heat pump technology. They also forced the HVAC industry to adapt and realize it needed to level-up its heat pump expertise as well.

On that note, you can expect to see even more heat pump technology and heat pump related education at the CMPX Show in Toronto, March 25-27. It will be the place where Canadian contractors see the latest and greatest.

I would also like to bring attention to how heat pumps and the decarbonization/electrification push is launching new business models to the industry. In June 2024 I wrote about Quilt, a Silicon Valley start-up bringing a digital-first approach to the heat pump home services market. The company now has contractor/installer partners in Canada for its mini-split systems. And now another start-up, Jetson, based in Vancouver, is bringing a similar model to homes but with a ducted heat pump system.

I am eager to learn more about how these companies are approaching the HVAC industry in Canada, and that’s why we’re launching a new podcast: HPAC presents, Business Disruptors. We’ll be speaking with company owners who are shaking up the industry. The first episode will drop this month.

If your business is disrupting the industry I invite you to reach out, because we’d like to hear about it and get you on the podcast. Look for us in person at CMPX (booth #4), send an e-mail (editor@hpacmag.com), or write a letter, put it in an envelope, and send it by mail. I can’t wait.

STRONGEST BUILDING INTENTIONS IN 2025 WERE FOR MULTI-UNIT RESIDENTIAL

As 2025 came to an end, weak singlefamily home and industrial construction intentions drove declines in the overall value of residential and non-residential construction permits issued nationwide.

Year over year, the total value of building permits issued in 2025 rose by $3.3 billion to $149.7 billion. However, taking inflation into consideration, on a constant dollar basis (2023=100) the total value of building permits actually declined 1.3% from 2024 to $139.6 billion.

On a year over year basis, the residential sector decreased $1 billion to $86.6 billion in 2025, with single-family construction

MODERN NIAGARA SELLING SERVICES DIVISION TO U.S.BASED BCTS

Best In Class Technology Services is a collection of commercial HVAC service contractors operating across the Midwest, Southeast and Northeast U.S.

Modern Niagara Group has announced that U.S.-based Best In Class Technology Services (BCTS) will acquire the company’s services division, Modern Niagara Building Services (MNBS), the unit responsible for commercial HVAC maintenance and repairs, retrofit, plumbing, electrical, controls, fuel oil and mechanical expertise across Canadian markets including Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver.

According to Modern Niagara, selling its services business will enable the company to sharpen its focus on core construction capabilities and major project delivery.

“This transaction strengthens both organizations, and we see meaningful opportunity ahead,” said Brad McAninch, CEO, Modern Niagara, in a company release. “As part of this partnership, Modern Niagara will become one of BCTS’s largest shareholders. This is a reflection of our confidence in MNBS’s future and in the long-term potential of this combined North American platform. MNBS will join a team deeply committed to service excellence, while Modern Niagara advances our long-term strategy to grow and lead in the construction and megaproject space.”

BCTS, formed in October, 2020, was created by Dunes Point Capital (New Yorkbased investment firm) by rolling up three commercial HVAC maintenance firms across the U.S. The group was subsequently acquired by Investcorp (a global investment firm) in January, 2024.

Today, BCTS is headquartered in Lenexa, Kansas, and is made up of five HVAC service contractors operating out of some 14 locations across the Midwest, Southeast and Northeast U.S. This will be the group’s first acquisition in Canada.

intentions falling 7%, yet the overall total number of residential units authorized for construction was up 19,100 to 308,600 in 2025, a record high.

It was through gains in multi-unit dwellings (up 22,600) that buffered the declines in single-family homes (-3,500).

Meanwhile, the total value of non-residential (institutional, commercial and in -

dustrial) building permits fell overall in 2025, the first annual decline since 2020.

Quebec led this drop followed by Ontario, while gains in Alberta and B.C. along with three other provinces and one territory moderated the overall losses in the ICI sector. statcan.gc.ca

INDUSTRY RESET AT AHR EXPO 2026

Bringing the heat for a few days in February, this year’s AHR Expo in Las Vegas (Feb. 2-4), attracted some 53,998 HVAC/R industry professionals to the Central and South Halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center to explore close to 579,000 sq. ft. of show floor space to see and experience the latest products from 1,956 exhibitors.

“This industry just keeps getting more exciting,” said show manager, Jeff Stevens in a post-show media release. “We’re proud to serve as the place where HVAC/R professionals come together to tackle emerging challenges and discover new opportunities.”

The 2026 Product of the Year winner, selected from among the 10 AHR Innovation Award winners announced last fall, was presented to Blue Frontier for their BF-DOAS (dedicated outdoor air system) technology. The system uses liquid desiccant to cool and dehumidify, making it more energy efficient when compared with other solutions that rely solely on refrigerants and the vapour compression cycle.

Despite being located in the warm weather of Nevada, this year’s show brought attention to more dual-fuel heating options for cold climates as well. Navien highlighted configurations combining its heat pump, hydro-furnace, and cased coils, alongside its new dual-fuel hybrid heat pump water heater, demonstrating how contractors can combine systems to help customers lower energy costs and satisfy electrification goals. From a hydronics perspective Weil-McLain was showing

its Eco Hybrid dual fuel system combining an air-to-water heat pump with a boiler. And Lochinvar was showing hybrid commercial water heating solutions with its Veritus air-source heat pump water heater combined with an electric or gas-fueled option.

The education program this year included some 290 learning opportunities over the course of the Expo. An annual highlight is the standing-room-only State of the Industry Panel, once again moderated by Bryan Orr of the HVAC School

podcast, along with Bill McQuade, president ASHRAE, Stephen Yurek, CEO AHRI and Talbot Gee, CEO HARDI.

“There has been a lot of change in this industry over last five to 10 years,” said Yurek. “We’ve had efficiency changes, which required going from SEER to SEER2 … then the refrigerant transition two years later. But I can tell you that there isn’t another refrigerant transition on the horizon nor an efficiency change (in residential products) for the foreseeable future.”

Crowds were large for this year’s show with over 41,800 visitors and some 12,000 exhibitors.

The topic of tariffs and rising prices was also touched on. “As much as it’s been a challenge for the entire industry to deal with increasing prices for products and systems, the fact that affordability is top of mind for a lot of customers, both commercial and residential, also means finding the right solution for the problem becomes paramount … the most cost effective solution for that problem,” added Gee.

“From the building side the emphasis on decarbonization hasn’t really waned,” said McQuade. Who notes that owners

and building designers are looking more at embodied carbon in products as well as placing more emphasis on the life expectancy of equipment.

Other topics of discussion included transitioning to natural refrigerants and incorporating AI into your business. Full length videos of all the 2026 Panel Series sessions are available for free viewing on ahrexpo.com.

TOOLS YOU USE

Times are

changing

and

technology

keeps evolving, and so are the tools we carry in our vans.

My HVAC career started off in new construction, hauling materials down into unfinished basements, sorting scrap sheet metal from excess stock headed back to the shop, stringing extension cords from temporary panels, and doing basic sheet metal fab.

Once I earned my gas fitter’s license the work shifted to include piping gas furnaces, boilers and water heaters. Early on, most tools belonged to the shop or another mechanic. Over time, I built my own foundational kit.

For sheet metal hand tools I started with a set of original Wiss aviation snips, those iconic green and red-handled ones (now under Apex Tool Group). Later I added Ridgid offset snips, which I still use today.

I also picked up a Wiss drop-forged steel tinner’s snip that served me well for years before I passed it on to a promising young apprentice. A hand seamer, folding tool and pipe crimper rounded out the set in my bag.

And back in the corded era, before battery-powered tools existed, I inher-

ited a battle-tested Milwaukee Sawzall that lasted me another dozen years before purchasing another one that I still have today. For big drills, I went with Black & Decker and a Kango 950 hammer drill.

“As the industry evolves, staying open to advancements could provide the next big edge, like cordless drills once did.”

I’ll never forget the day my 3/4-hp B&D drill, with a 2-in. wood core bit, hit a buried nail in a rim joist. The bit stopped turning instantly; in the blink of an eye as the motor kept roaring, the drill twisted my finger onto the trigger lock before I could let go of the handle. My left hand (gripping the helper handle) whipped around and clocked me in the face so hard I rolled a few feet away across the lawn as the drill spun wildly,

wrapping its own cord until it yanked free from the plug and died. That was my introduction to real horsepower, and I loved that beast of a drill anyway.

Other basics in my kit included a smaller corded drill for pilot holes in sheet metal (we still popped rivets back then). My scratch awl saved me from dragging out the drill and cords just to install a few sheet metal screws. Of course I needed to add pipe wrenches, levels, tape measures to a growing collection of other basics that every mechanic needs.

STEPPING UP FOR AC

By the mid 1980’s my HVAC work world revolved around residential gas furnace installations, in both new construction and retrofits, along with the increasingly popular demand for central air conditioner units.

My kit expanded to handle gas combustion, airflow, refrigeration and electrical diagnostics. This era marked a shift toward specialized equipment: • Manometers for gas pressure and air pressure testing.

• Gauge manifold sets: Analog versions for checking refrigerant pressures.

• Vacuum pumps: To evacuate systems and remove moisture.

• Micron gauges: Basic models to measure vacuum depth.

• Voltage/amperage testers: Clamp meters or multimeters for electrical troubleshooting.

At the time, these were mostly analog or mechanical requiring manual calculations and interpretations, which could be time-consuming and prone to human error. One standout tool back then was my Dwyer 1227 Dual Range U-Inclined Manometer. It excelled at precise gas pressure readings in U-tube mode and handy duct airflow measurements when used as an inclined gauge.

On one service call, as I was packing up to leave near the front door, I accidentally dropped the unit. Of course, one of the tube plugs popped out, and the red gauge oil spilled across a beautiful white chair in the hallway. Oops, that was an expensive mistake, complete with apologies and a cleanup bill to my employer.

Thankfully, the customer took it in stride and didn’t get upset. I can still picture that chair to this day.

Not long after, I upgraded to an electronic manometer, which eliminated spills and provided instant reliable digital readings.

TOOLS EVOLUTION

I became a field service representative in late 1997. Although my daily handson use of HVAC tools diminished, I continued evaluating new tools and methods as they underwent significant transformations driven by technology, regulations (like CFC phase-outs and energy efficiency standards), and a growing focus on safety, speed and data accuracy. Key changes I’ve witnessed include:

From analog to digital: Gauges and meters shifted from mechanical dials to digital readouts in the late 1990s and

early 2000s, reducing errors and adding features like data logging. For example, manifold sets now often include built-in calculations for superheat and subcooling.

Corded to cordless and batterypowered: Drills and other power tools went wireless in the early-to-mid 2000s, with lithium-ion batteries delivering longer runtime (e.g., 18V, 20V, and even 24V+ systems today). This vastly improved mobility in tight spaces like attics or crawlspaces. My first cordless drill, a Makita 7.2-volt battery-powered model, was right at the forefront of that shift in the mid-1980s.

Back then, Ni-Cd batteries were bulky with limited runtime, but ditching the cord meant no more hunting for outlets (unless recharging on a jobsite) or dealing with someone unplugging you at the temporary panel. That 7.2-volt unit sometimes lacked torque when driving screws through multiple layers of sheet metal, so I quickly upgraded to a Milwaukee 12-volt model when it hit the market.

Wow, talk about power; it could snap the heads off Robertson screws without much effort. But as the late car maker Carroll Shelby quipped, “There is never enough horsepower... just not enough traction,” today’s battery drills pack 18V and 20V platforms with even more grunt.

Wireless and app integration:

Starting in the 2010s, tools like probes and scales became Bluetooth-enabled, connecting to smartphone apps for real-time monitoring, logging, and reporting. Companies like Fieldpiece pioneered this with systems like Job Link, letting techs view multiple readings on one device without constant trips back and forth.

For my preferences, the Yellow Jacket ManTooth PT Module stood out as the best digital manifold, its direct-connect design minimized refrigerant loss and made charging or pulling vacuum straightforward.

Advanced diagnostics and safety: Environmental regulations pushed for better refrigerant handling (e.g., recovery machines became mandatory). New tools like combustion analyzers emerged in the 2000s for tuning furnaces efficiently and detecting CO issues. Thermal imaging cameras (popularized in the 2010s) now spot heat leaks or electrical hotspots non-invasively.

Software and smart tools: By the 2020s, apps replaced manual calculators for load sizing, duct design and fault finding. Tools are now more ergonomic, with features like rapid sensors that ignore ambient conditions for faster readings.

My trusty manifold and other test tools, such as my original Amprobe clamp meter, were replaced by digital tools as in Figure 1 on the previous page.

TODAY’S ESSENTIALS

Depending upon your HVAC work routine, tools of your daily trade work will vary. Your van would need a mix of timeless basics, upgraded classics and modern must-haves. Aim for organization with shelving, bins and toolboxes to keep everything accessible.

Installers and service technicians working in various situations such as

residential, light commercial, commercial/institutional, industrial and strictly refrigeration applications will need tools other than the basics already mentioned. Commercial refrigeration startup technicians might favour four-port manifolds, while residential techs often prefer compact wireless setups for ease of handling.

Every service tech needs a bright flashlight! Combustion analyzers, thermal cameras and smart phones have also become essential tools in the hands of modern HVAC/R mechanics.

A great real-world example comes from Jason Holmstrom (senior HVAC/R foreman, UA Local 26, in the greater Seattle area), who recently shared photos of his impressively organized service van on social media.

Jason graciously permitted me to use the photos of his service vehicle, (Figure 2, below).

He wrote, “34 years and I still haven’t found a way to downsize. I can drive anywhere in the country, perform installation and service work on any type of

equipment that exists, commercial/industrial refrigeration, chillers, boilers, VRF systems, air handlers, packaged rooftops, it doesn’t matter.”

I’m confident Jason could easily get a residential gas furnace going too.

Compared to the corded drills and spill-prone manometers of the ‘80s and ‘90s, today’s van is a mobile workshop, faster, safer and more efficient. The right tools (and organization) still make all the difference.

WHAT’S NEW IN DIAGNOSTICS?

Looking ahead to 2026 and beyond, exciting new tools like Discovery Sound Technology’s (DST) ultrasound + AI platform are pushing predictive maintenance further. Utilizing scanning equipment acoustically to spot impending failures in bearings, compressors or valves before they cause breakdowns is leading edge. In my opinion, DST is a legitimate HVAC-specific predictive maintenance platform bound to gain more attention in our industry, particularly for commercial and industrial refrigeration,

chillers, boilers, rooftop units and air handlers.

DST is a patented, self-calibrating system (their MSI 150 hardware) that captures high-frequency ultrasonic sound energy and “SoundSignature” patterns from equipment components.

As a maintenance management tool, it will provide predictive failure alerts, trend conditions over time and generate reports that include suggestions for action. Useful for early leak detection, inefficient components, impending failures in pumps and motors and for validation of post maintenance work, this tool is best for trend analysis over multiple servicing visits as opposed to one-off repair jobs.

Other costs such as upfront hardware and an ongoing software subscription makes this iteration more useful for commercial applications.

“Staying open to advancements could provide the next big edge.”

Acoustic/ultrasonic imagers are something to look at, for example the Fluke ii910 is a handheld device that visualizes ultrasonic leaks or electrical issues on a screen, like a “sound camera.” Great for quick compressed air/refrigerant leak hunts, motor or pump bearing faults, or corona discharge in electrical panels.

Providing faster more precise evaluations than probe-style detectors, the Fluke ii910 has several modes (from the website):

• LeakQ mode, estimates leak size and cost;

• PDQ mode, assesses discharge severity;

• MecQ mode, proactively address potential problems in rotating mechanical components.

AR AND AI

Augmented reality (AR) apps could be the next best thing for troubleshooting. Techs can scan equipment with a phone or tablet, then AR will overlay wiring diagrams, fault codes or repair steps. This might end up working best with AI smart glasses. Field technicians can execute instructions quicker when they

are not holding a device in one hand. Smart glasses empower them to receive hands-free support and operate at peak performance. This technology is still emerging but may be useful for complex VRF or chiller troubleshooting. Combined with broader AI analytics, smart sensors and acoustic imagers, these technologies shift us from reactive fixes to proactive care, saving time, money and headaches. As the industry evolves, staying open to advancements could provide the next big edge, like cordless drills once did.

TOOLS AND TAXES

When it comes to tools, I’d like to close with a thought or two for the provincial and federal policymakers who set our tax policy.

In Ontario, we pay a full 13% HST on everything from digital manifolds to tin snips, and technicians often buy these essentials out of pocket.

If the federal government eliminated their 5% GST share on trade tools, or expanded meaningful relief, it would make a real difference for HVAC/R techs, installers and every other skilled tradesperson.

When I wrote my Certificate of Qualification, I sat next to hair stylists facing the same sticker shock on their professional shears and dryers.

Today’s HVAC/R gear is no less essential, whether personally owned or company supplied. A little tax breathing room would help us all invest in better, safer, more efficient tools, and ultimately help us deliver even better service to our customers. <>

EVAPORATOR SELECTION

There are many factors to consider when choosing an evaporator for any given space.

Refrigerating a space is the achievement of a producing a temperature below that of the immediate surroundings, but it is a bit of a misnomer to state that refrigeration (or air conditioning) equipment is actually “cooling” a space. Because, while the hopeful outcome of employing the refrigeration process is a cooler temperature in the refrigerated space, the fact is that refrigeration is a heat transfer process. It is the result of transferring heat from the refrigerated space which then results in a cooler temperature.

When it comes to selecting the proper evaporator for a particular space to be refrigerated, there are many factors to consider. At the most elementary level, it’s important to remember the basic elements of the refrigeration cycle. First, remember that the saturation temperature is when a liquid starts to boil (or a vapour starts to condense) and that temperature remains constant when at a constant pressure.

Every fluid (or refrigerant) has its own particular set of thermodynamic properties, including a distinct pressure-temperature relationship. This will define what the fluid’s saturation (boiling) temperature will be at a specific pressure.

As an example, consider R-22 (or Freon) the single component refrigerant that has been phased out because of its ozone-depleting factors. Because it's a refrigerant without a glide it is easier to explain. Refrigerant glide occurs in blends when evaporation starts because one component of a blend begins to boil before others, affecting the superheat settings.

In Figure 1 we see a vessel of R-22 with two varying conditions: evaporator @ 49 psig pressure, with a saturation temperature of 25F. Condenser @ 180 psig pressure, with a saturation temperature of 94.3F

Figure 2 illustrates a basic vapour-compression refrigeration system with four major components: 1) The compressor receives low temperature/low pressure vapour from the evaporator, and converts it to high temperature/high pressure vapour; 2) The condenser receives the high temperature/high pressure vapour, and transfers heat from it. This allows the refrigerant to undergo a phase change (vapour to liquid). The refrigerant exits the condenser as a warm high-pressure liquid; 3) The expansion device is the component which converts the refrigerant into a useful medium for effective heat transfer.

Figure 1. Pressure and temperature relationship of R-22 refrigerant.
Figure 2: The basic refrigeration cycle.
Figure 3. The effect on air temperature flowing through an evaporator.

Here, the warm high-pressure liquid experiences a pressure drop. Some portion of the 100% liquid entering the expansion device flashes into a vapour after experiencing the pressure drop, with the resulting low-pressure refrigerant now a mixture of saturated liquid/ vapour at a saturation temperature that corresponds to the pressure for the refrigerant in use; 4) The evaporator receives the saturated liquid/vapour mixture, and as the evaporator fan(s) move air through the evaporator’s tube/ fin bundle, heat from the warmer air is transferred to the liquid/vapour mixture flowing through the evaporator tubing. This heat transfer process provides the required cooling capacity to maintain the desired temperature in the space.

Figure 3 shows 40F air entering an evaporator. The saturated liquid refrigerant is the evaporator tubes is 25F. Heat from the air is transferred to the lower temperature refrigerant, reducing the leaving air temperature to 30F. Yes, the air has been cooled, but it is the result of heat transfer in the evaporator.

OPTIONS

There are several varieties of evaporators for different applications.

A Gravity/Convection Evaporator consists of a coil or array of bare pipes (with or without fins), where the surface area of the pipe is the heat transfer surface. This could be used in a small refrigeration application, or a large conditioned bunker. Heat transfer is accomplished as the warm air in space interacts with the cold surface of the pipe. Given that the heat transfer relies on the natural air movement (warm air rising, and cool air falling), a great amount of piping surface area is required to provide heat transfer capacity.

A Forced Air Evaporator has a finned/ tube construction, encased in a sheet metal housing, with the addition of fan motors/fans increasing the volume of air from the refrigerated space which is in contact with the heat transfer sur-

face. This includes the Direct Expansion Evaporator, either a non-adjustable fixed orifice expansion device or an adjustable mechanical or electric expansion valve is piped to the inlet of this evaporator. This provides the pressure drop necessary for the refrigerant to achieve the lower pressure/temperature required for the evaporator.

The expansion device is sized to maintain some amount of superheat at the outlet of the evaporator. This is simply a preventative measure to ensure that liquid refrigerant does not flow back to the compressor. The direct expansion would be the most common style of evaporator employed in HVAC and refrigerant applications.

SELECTION

There are several parameters that will determine what type/style of evaporator would best suit a given application. Here are nine factors to consider:

1. The required space temperature. 2. A load calculation to determine what capacity is required to maintain the space temperature.

3. Dimensions of the space, which will determine how much air throw is required and where the evaporators should be located.

4. Product type and application, which will determine the TD (temperature difference between the entering air temperature and the refrigerant saturation temperature in the evaporator).

5. Application will also determine whether the evaporator should be low air velocity or high air velocity.

6. Altitude: The air flow through the evaporator is the medium for transferring heat to the refrigerant. At higher altitudes, with the less dense air, there will be a reduction in the air mass flow, which will result in an evaporator capacity reduction. For example, at a 5,000-ft. altitude, there is an approximate 15% capacity reduction.

7. Refrigerant used.

8. Voltage required.

9. What type of defrost is required. Let’s take a look at some parameters for a standard refrigerated dairy box: 1.) 35F; 2.) 34,966 Btu; 3.) 26 x 36 ft (936 sq. ft.); 4.) Dairy, beverage. 10F TD; 5.) Low velocity not required. Low profile style evaporator, with 40-ft. throw; 6.) Sea level application, so no altitude de-rating; 7.) R-448A; 8.) 115 V; 9.) Air defrost.

Continued from p34

Now, to make our evaporator selection, look at the model options presented in Figure 4 (previous page). It shows various Trenton Low Profile (TLP) models with their respective capacity. The yellow highlighted note states that the capacity is based on a 10F TD.

Evaporator capacity is directly proportional to TD. For this application, the 209M with a stated nominal capacity of 9,500 Btu would be multiplied by 1.5 (15F TD/10F TD = 1.5) to calculate the actual capacity (14,250 Btu).

The blue highlighted note implies that the listed capacities are for R-407A/R407C. Should an evaporator be used with R-448A, the listed nominal capacity would need to multiplied by 0.96 to calculate its actual capacity.

For our refrigerated dairy box application we willl use two evaporators. The TLP evaporators have a 35-ft. throw,

and can be mounted on the 26-ft. wall.

We will select two TLP317M evaporators, with a nominal capacity of 18,400 Btu each. The actual capacity is 17,644 Btu (18,400 x 0.96).

Figure 5 (above) shows the nomenclature for the TLP evaporator. The various letters and numbers that comprise the model number are not arbitrary—they actually stand for something. To prop -

ALLEGUARD INSULATED PEX PANEL

HYDRONIC RADIANT FLOOR HEATING SYSTEMS

DESIGN

Alleguard’s insulated PEX panel combines a number of unique elements making it one of the best panels on the market. The panel consists of expanded polystyrene insulation, moulded to high impact polystyrene film. This combination makes for a stronger, more resilient interlocking PEX panel. Additionally, the panel nubs form a mushroom shape, locking the PEX piping firmly in place. Once inserted, it guarantees that the pipe is properly positioned and seated in the panel.

The innovative panel design with bridging and cavities ensures that the PEX piping will be completely surrounded with concrete and not pushed to the bottom of the panel. This feature will allow for better heat distribution from the radiant piping and a more efficient energy transfer.

CONTRACTOR SAVINGS

The design of the Alleguard PEX insulation panel makes for a very durable and simple install on the job site. Because of its strength and stability, contractors can handle the material with ease eliminating breakage, replacement and additional labour. The film on the panel along with the nubs, allows the PEX piping to be walked in and locked into place, rather than constant bending to wire-tie or staple the piping firmly into place cutting labour time and material costs. The oversized four sided tongue and groove interlock system makes installation quick, easy and secure. The size of the panels also increase productivity and precision when placing the panels on the floor. The 2x4 panels become easier to maneuver, easier to place and easier to identify leveling inconsistencies.

APPLICATIONS

Hydronic heating can solve winter season problems by implementing a snow and ice melt system by circulating warm liquid through PEX piping which is concealed in the concrete. These systems can be easily installed in residential, commercial or industrial applications such as driveways, sidewalks, stairs, entrances, parking lots, ramps, helipads and much more.

Homeowners can choose to have hydronic heating throughout their entire home which can eliminate the need for forced air units and reduce utility bills. Common living areas for floor heating include the bathroom, the family room, the garage/driveway, entrances and even the kitchen.

B B HYDRONICS BUILDING BLOCKS

WHEAT TRANSFER AND HEAT SOURCES

Part two in our introduction to hydronics considers the fundamentals in heat delivery. BY MICHAEL

elcome to part two of our six-part series on the building blocks for hydronics. In this article, I’ll cover the power plants for a system—exploring how heat is transferred and how best to achieve the results customers are looking for.

I think we all know about the three basic types of heat transfer, but let’s review quickly and see how heat transfer principles apply to various hydronic systems.

Conduction: heat transfer by physical contact will occur across, or through, a given medium when a temperature difference exists.

Convection: heat transfer that occurs between a surface and a moving liquid or gas at a different temperature, such as water through a pipe or air moving across a heated surface.

Radiation: all surfaces, no matter their size or temperature, emit energy waves. This energy is called thermal radiation, and it takes place because two surfaces are at different temperatures.

Okay, now that we are all caught up, let’s look at different applications and the effect on heating.

HEAT SOURCES

The popular forced air gas-burning furnace systems in Canada are almost 100% convective in their heat distribution to spaces, but within the furnace itself all three heat transfer types are used. Combustion is convective through the heat exchanger; heat transfer to the airstream is conductive, and the radiation from the flame is transferred in the first pass of the heat exchanger. Cooling the flue gases to condensing extracts approximately 10% more energy than non-condensing appliances, and you require a very specific airflow requirement.

Heat pumps (air-to-air, water-to-air) use the vapour compression cycle to transfer heat, but in both cases for the final distribution, we blow and blend warm air with cooler room air hoping to achieve comfort.

In hydronics there are many options when it comes to heat sources and heat emitters (as discussed in part 1). The most common option, boilers (electric, natural gas, propane, oil or wood burning) like a furnace, use all three forms of heat trans -

Radiant floors are a great heat emitter option as they can be installed in a variety of ways, require low supply temperatures and provide overall comfort.

fer, and water tube boilers in particular use more of the flame’s radiant energy. Heat pumps (air-to-water and water-to-water) uses conduction and convection. And solar thermal uses conduction, convection and radiation.

Buildings are not limited to one heat source, and just about any combination of systems are possible. Same goes for the emitter portion of the distribution system. Some of the options include: hot water baseboard (using conduction and convection); panel radiators (conduction, convection and radiation); radiant floors, walls and ceilings (conduction, radiation); warm air/fan coils (convection, very similar to forced air). And then you can tie in systems for domestic hot water supply (conduction, convection), snow melt (conduction, radiation and convenience), hot tubs and swimming pools (conduction, convection).

You can see how hydronics uses heat transfer in more ways, offering more ways to use that energy, in particular radiant. And even in the emitters I listed without radiation, there is some radiant energy is being used.

EMITTERS

Let’s revisit each emitter in a little more detail. But first, it’s important to understand that the heat source will deliver a required supply temperature to the system emitters, and once the fluid has travelled through the system it will return to the heat source at a lower ‘return’ temperature. I will use the default 20F Delta T (temperature difference from supply

SOURCE: MICHAEL BREAULT

to return) throughout this discussion for consistency, but this is not a requirement (more on that in the future).

A few things to keep in mind when it comes to emitters. For every 3F degrees we can reduce supply water temperature we can save 1% in energy (outdoor reset). For every one degree we can reduce room temperature we save 3% in energy. And ASHRAE states that for every degree surface temperature is increased we can lower air temperature 2F.

Hot water baseboard: These are historically high temperature systems usually designed for 180F water (so boilers, not heat pumps). But more recently, manufacturers publish data for lower temperature options, some as low as 120F. Copper pipes and aluminum fins run inside units along walls. These units heat air via natural convection: cool air enters the bottom, gets heated by the fins, and rises, creating a warm, consistent, and draft-free, circulation.

Warm air/Fan-coils: Again, most common with boilers as heat sources, but they can be designed with heat pumps. Hot water is circulated in a coil and air is blown over the coil to exchange heat. Bonus with these is that heat pump options can provide cool water and provide cooling as well as heating. I have personal experience with these emitters and will share more details in forthcoming articles.

Panel radiators: Suitable for all heat sources, these radiators come in many shapes and sizes and were typically designed for 150F supply water. Panel ra -

diators emit a very comfortable heat, a nice blend of convective and radiant heat. Many have localized thermostatic valves controlling flow locally and allowing individual zone control tailored to each space. Using these as an emitter can take advantage of cooler water temps, saving energy, and they have the added bonus of radiation which will heat surface areas in a space. And as mentioned in part 1, if we can heat objects in the space just one degree we can lower the air temp two degrees, saving 6% in energy costs.

Radiant floors, walls and ceilings: All heat sources work with these radiant surfaces. Radiant floors are a great option as they can be installed in a variety of ways (in-slab, under floor and more), they require low supply temperatures (generally) as the entire floor is the emitter, so other surfaces and objects in rooms will also be warmer aiding in overall comfort (see image above, and notice the wall temperatures).

When it comes to system design there may be limitations on heat output based on available area, but you can add supplemental options like radiant in the walls or the ceiling to compensate. But it’s always important to remember how many days we are actually at design temperature (preparing for the coldest weather days). Adding a panel radiator as a second stage supplement may be just the combination you need.

On the subject of radiant floors, I want to add a small comment about electric resistance radiant. There is absolutely no reason you cannot mix hydronic and

electric in a home or building. It’s all about customer expectations and design options.

Look at a typical primary bedroom with an ensuite bathroom arrangement. Not a McMansion, just a regular home. Say the ensuite is 5 ft. x 10 ft., so that is 50 sq. ft. minus space for the toilet, the tub and maybe the vanity. So the heated area is maybe 30 sq. ft. in total. That is a small zone.

You have a couple of design options. Integrate it with the primary bedroom, or make it a separate zone. If it’s a separate zone, it’s small, and you will likely require a buffer tank or your heat source will short cycle, and frequently. This is an occurrence we want to avoid.

Also, is the primary suite the same flooring as the washroom? Probably not. These generally require different water temperatures. And what is the customer’s expectation? Warm floors to take the chill off?

In this instance, electric is an excellent option for maintaining a warm floor in a small space. Operationally it will be negligible. And the comfort level is just what the customer ordered.

As we continue in this series, I will continue to share some fundamental information along with some practical applications sprinkled in.

I hope these articles open your mind to the options available within the hydronics industry, while you also keep a focus on making comfort as well as efficiency a primary goal for you and your customers. Join us in the next article where we will look at installation details. <>

THE SYSTEM APPROACH

A reader asks about options for heating and cooling a new build home with hydronics. BY CURTIS BENNETT

My first house was a simple 960 sq. ft. bungalow. We bought it knowing it needed a lot of work, new kitchen, new bathrooms and paint. The basement was partially finished with a concrete floor and few walls and a bathroom. It was a perfect opportunity to put radiant in the basement.

I also thought it would be cool to put cast iron radiators upstairs. They were old school units I found around the area. I sand blasted and refinished them.

I made one big mistake in this process though. I took out the existing forced-air furnace. I left the ducting in place, but everything else was gone. The issue presented itself when we decided to sell. People liked the look, but they failed to understand how it all worked. Pipes, manifolds, boiler and everything in between, it was overwhelming to buyers. People around here are used to having some air movement in their house.

What does this have to do with today’s topic? It’s good to think outside the box, but don’t go too far. Remember, the goal in our industry is comfort and efficiency.

GOOD QUESTION

We had another entry into CurtGPT. A reader reached out asking about plans for a new build and what sort of systems to put in. One thing I need to reiterate: yes, I do have knowledge on more than just electronics and hydronics controls,

but please keep the questions more on the electronics and controls side in order for me to truly share my expertise.

That being said, our question came from Rejean about a new build house plan in Eastern Ontario along the Outaouais river. I won’t tackle his questions concerning construction methods, but I will try to hit on the rest.

First things first. He wants to use hydronics for heating. So, where will the heating (Btu’s) come from? A lot of people today will be suggesting heat pumps, as there are rebates and companies jumping on the bandwagon.

I like heat pumps, and they definitely serve a purpose, especially in this situation where Rejean wants hydronic heating but also wants to have cooling. The issue in most of Canada is that the cooling load is less total hours of the year than your heating load. So, you need to size the heat pumps for the heat load.

This can get hard to do with a heat pump only, so I would say you will need some backup. Now what type of heat pump is also a big deal. You were wondering about air-to-water and water-towater heat pumps. Well, air-to-water is a simpler system, using ambient air to reject or recover for heating or cooling.

For a water-to-water heat pump you need a field or holes drilled to reject or recover for heating or cooling. This is generally a larger expense.

Now this is where it gets interesting. Water-to-water (or geoexchange) will have better efficiency in cold weather

“Keep it simple and get proper controls.”

because the systems are not as dependent on outdoor air temperature, they use the ground temperature which is more consistent. Air-to-water systems drop off in efficiency when the outside temperature starts dipping below 0C.

Yes, I know this changes with all the different variations of heat pumps available today, but the reality is there is simply less recoverable heat in 0C-degree air and below.

So, you have a higher installation cost for water-to-water, and I believe in having a boiler backup regardless, so no point in spending the extra money as you can just use the boiler to “top up” your heating system either way.

I guess that was me endorsing an airto-water heat pump system. I actually did not see that coming. I didn’t know I could talk myself into that.

You had already decided on hydronic heating, but you were wondering about

hydronic cooling. There are a few things to consider. You could do cooling using fan-coils (blowing air), or you can do radiant cooling.

Radiant cooling takes more effort, and there is a delicate line when it comes to condensation and flooring. You do not want to wreck a $50,000 hardwood surface, because that would suck.

The other approach is radiant cooling emitters, usually in the ceiling, but there again you still have dew point issues. And you’ll have additional emitters you need to install.

I am definitely not against radiant cooling by any means. It can just get overwhelming real fast, and I do like to keep things simple. I would say do it with fancoils, and you can also use those fancoils for secondary heating. This just simplifies things.

From a controls perspective, we have thermostats that can handle two stages of heating, which means radiant as first stage and then a fancoil as the second stage. Plus, they will also do the cooling for that zone as well. I am talking about our THM-0600 in this case. There are many other features like humidity con -

trol and intermittent fan control to up the ante as well.

You mention that in your current house you don’t like the cooling system because the temperature variance is terrible, especially in the shoulder seasons. The issue you bring up with room temperature variance from area to area is something a good thermostat and zoning “SYSTEM” can help with.

Why did I say “SYSTEM” in all caps? Because you need a system approach when it comes to things like this. A zone control needs to act as the central system that knows what everything else is doing. The system will take feedback from thermostats in each zone. It will run the heating for each zone, the radiant as well as the secondary through the fancoil, and it will also control all the cooling in each zone, or if you tie multiple cooling zones to one thermostat.

A good feature of a zone control (our ZON-0600 for example) is the ability to control all the dampers in the system. This allows you to “zone” your air side. So, if you only need cooling in one section of the house, guess what, cooling only goes to that section. This allows

you to have full control of your “SYSTEM” not just control of each room individually. This is a big deal.

I will also mention the ability of the “SYSTEM” to prioritize some zones over others. It also gives you the ability to zone with higher temperature zones over lower temperature zones without mixing. Another added cost.

I say all of this because your system will likely need lower temp for the radiant than it will for the fancoils. This way you can shut off the lower temp zones while delivering higher temp water to the fancoils. This may not be the case depending on the final system design, but just keep it in mind.

One last feature to go over—tanking. You need two tanks. DO NOT SCRIMP ON THIS. I’ve seen it way too many times where the easy place to save money is avoiding the second tank. But that sacrifices both comfort and efficiency.

From the proposed house rendering you sent, you expect to have a lot of windows. You may have an area that needs cooling even in the winter. If you have both a heating and cooling load at the same time, a single tank solution swings from hot to cold and cold to hot. This is terribly inefficient.

Keep it simple. I have seen overcomplicated systems achieve neither comfort nor efficiency. So be aware. I always find the more complicated the system, the more room for things to go wrong.

I’m sure I’m not the only person that notices that. LOL.

Keep it simple and get proper controls for the job. <>

HAVE IT BOTH WAYS

Multi-zone heating and cooling can be accomplished using multiple fan coils with the right controls.

The availability of heat pumps has made it possible for those who design and install hydronic heating to expand their offerings to include cooling. And one of the simplest approaches uses a single air handler with a chilled water coil to supply a ducted forced-air distribution system.

In average houses this single zone approach to cooling can be combined with multi-zone hydronic heating.

For example, a single air handler rated for nominal 3-tons of cooling could be combined with a heating distribution system that supplies eight panel radiators, each with their own thermostatic control valve.

WHEN ONE ISN’T ENOUGH

Still, there are situations where clients want zoned cooling. One approach is to use multiple fan-coils, each equipped with a condensate drip pan and drain, to provide both heating and cooling. This approach, although certainly possible, brings a higher level of complication and increases cost relative to single zone cooling.

Figure 1 shows two piping options for such a system. Both use a simple homerun style distribution system serving five console fan-coil units.

One version of the piping uses zone

valves, and the other option uses manifold valve actuators. Each zone is operated by a 24VAC heat/cool thermostat.

Zone valves typically provide higher Cv values relative to manifold valves and thus create less head loss in zones that require upwards of say two gallons per minute (gpm) flow.

Some zone valves can be configured with tailpieces that connect directly to PEX tubing on one side, and press fit to copper tubing on the other. These valves simplify and speed installation if PEX tubing is used for the homerun circuits.

If manifold valve actuators are used, be sure that a) the manufacturer endorses their use with chilled water cooling, and b) be sure they are mounted on top of the manifold to prevent any condensate from running down, and possibly into, the actuator body.

A variable-speed pressure-regulated circulator is used in each approach. It automatically adjusts speed as the zone valves or valve actuators turn on an off.

NECESSARY CONNECTIONS

One of the common approaches for wir ing multi-zone hydronic heating systems is to use a multi-zone relay centre. Figure 2 shows the “generic” and simpli fied wiring for such a controller. A 24VAC output for each thermostat is provided for each set of terminals along the top of the controller. A corresponding 24 VAC output for powering each zone valve is provided along the bottom.

An isolated “dry” contact (x,x) that closes when any one or more zones turns on can be used to signal the bal ance of system that a zone is active. These multi-zone controllers also have a line voltage powered contact to oper ate a circulator when any zone is active.

In this generic layout, each zone is turned on and off by a double pole single throw (DPST) relay. One contact of the re lay passes 24 VAC to the zone valve. The other contact passes 24 VAC to the iso lated relay for the (x x) terminals.

the option of making one zone the “priority zone.” When the priority zone is active all other zones are temporarily turned off. This allows the full output of the heat source to be directed to the priority zone. The priority zone is typically used to direct heat to an indirect domestic water heater.

Many modern controllers also have a “time out” feature that would either turn on the other zones if the priority zone has been active for a specific time (30 to 60 minutes is typical), or toggle the priority zone on and off with the non-priority zones to ensure that all active zones will receive some heat within a time that prevents potential freezing under extreme conditions.

Although there are many makes and models of multi-zone relay controllers for hydronic heating, most of them are not set up to accommodate thermostat inputs for both heating and cooling. This presents a challenge when systems

such as shown in Figure 1 need to operate multiple zones in both modes.

TEMPORARY WORK AROUND

I fully expect that more multi-zone controllers that can operate in both heating and cooling modes will be developed, especially given the rising interest in heat pumps as the primary heating (and cooling) source for hydronic systems.

If you choose to work with a multizone controller that was only designed for heating, consider the electrical wiring shown in Figure 3. This is one way to wire several single stage heat/cool thermostats to operate their associated zone valves, fan-coil, and heat pump.

Other wiring methods depend on the compatibility of the thermostat and internal controls in each fan-coil. The approach shown in Figure 3 is as “generic” as possible to accommodate a range of thermostats and fan-coils.

Most of these controllers also have

Separate

HEATING MODE

To understand this wiring start with the master switch in the upper left corner. Whenever this switch is closed the transformer supplies 24 VAC to a heat/cool/off mode selection switch. The mode selection switch sets the operating mode (e.g., heating or cooling) for all the zones.

When set for heat the switch supplies 24VAC from the transformer (X1) to the (RH) terminals on all thermostats. When set for cooling 24 VAC from the same transformer passes to the (RC) terminal in each thermostat.

Many heat/cool thermostats are supplied with a factory installed jumper between the (RH) and (RC) terminals. For the wiring shown in Figure 3 it’s important to remove this jumper so the (RH) and (RC) terminals are electrically isolated.

When the heat/cool/off mode selection switch is set for heating, and one of the thermostats calls for heat, 24VAC passes from that thermostat’s (RH) terminal to its (W) terminal. That 24VAC signal then passes to the associated zone valve or manifold valve actuator.

It also powers a relay (shown below the zone valve). The relay contacts close to pass line voltage (120VAC) to the blower in the fan-coil.

Some air handlers require 240VAC. In that case the relay

needs to have two poles. It’s also possible to use the normally open contact in this relay as a “dry” contact to provide an ‘enable’ signal to a fan-coil that has its own internal transformer and line voltage wiring.

A few seconds after the zone valve receives power its end switch closes completing a separate circuit between the heat pump’s (R) terminal and its (Y) terminal. This signals the heat pump to start it’s compressor. The heat pump will begin operating in heating mode.

Then 24 VAC from the heat pump’s (Y) terminal also passes through the coil of relay (Rcirc). The other side of that relay coil connects to the common (C) terminal in the heat pump. The normally open contacts in relay (Rcirc) close to apply line voltage to the circulator.

Keep in mind that the 24VAC supplied from the heat pump’s internal transformer is completely separate from the 24VAC supplied from the transformer label (X1).

COOLING MODE

When the master selection switch is set for cooling, and one of the thermostats calls for cooling, 24VAC passes from the thermostat’s (RC) terminal to its (Y) terminal. Because the (W) and

(Y) terminals in each thermostat are jumpered, 24VAC also powers the actuator on the associated zone valve and the blower relay for that zone. The blower relay contacts close to pass line voltage (120VAC or 240 VAC) to the blower motor in the fan-coil.

A few seconds after the zone valve receives power the end switch closes completing a separate circuit between the heat pump’s (R) terminal and its (Y) terminal. This signals the heat pump to start it’s compressor. But wait! “Isn’t that the same as what was just described for heating mode?”

“Yes, but …”

When the thermostat is set for cooling, and passes 24VAC to its Y terminal, it also passes 24 VAC to its (O) terminal. The (O) terminal is what energizes the heat pump’s refrigerant reversing valve to enable cooling operation.

Follow the lines from any of the thermostat (O) terminals and you’ll see that the 24VAC they pass energizes the coil in an isolation relay near the left side of the schematic.

The contacts in this isolation relay complete a circuit between the heat

pump’s (R) and (O) terminals. As soon as the (O) terminal in the heat pump receives 24VAC the refrigerant reversing valve actuates to configure the refrigerant flow for cooling mode.

The isolation relay is needed because the 24VAC signal that goes to the ther-

mostats, and powers the zone valves, comes from a transformer that’s completely separate from the transformer inside the heat pump.

It’s important not to get the wiring associated with these two transformers inadvertently crossed. When multiple transformers are used, pay close attention to where any 24VAC signal in the system is coming from, (e.g., usually some “R” terminal, and where it’s going (e.g., usually a “C” terminal), after passing through some electrical load device, such as a relay coil or zone valve actuator.

Although the system shown in Figure 3 has three zones, the wiring diagram could easily be expanded to the right to include more zones. The limit is primarily based on the VA (volt•amp) demand of the zone valves relative to the VA rating of the transformer used. Keep the total VA demand slightly under the transformers VA rating and all is well.

HARDWARE CHOICES

Notice that there are several horizontal lines in the schematic of Figure 3 that connect to terminals on each thermostat

and each zone valve. For example, the red horizontal line connects to the (RH) terminals on all the thermostats, and the orange horizontal line connects to one side of the end switch in each zone valve. The coloured dots indicate an electrical bond between each horizontal line, and the shorter lines of the same colour that run out to the various terminals.

From an electrical standpoint this means that all those shorter lines of a given colour are connected in parallel. Physically, if you had all the red line wires that go to the (RH) terminals in your hand, you could just join them with a wire nut. It would work, but it’s a bit “messy” and arguably harder for a future service technician to figure out.

A cleaner approach to keep all the parallel wiring segments organized is to use some simple terminal strips such as shown in Figure 4.

This type of terminal strip is available

from many online sources. The small (red) bonding strip slides under the terminal screws on one side of the strip to connect them all together electrically.

With this bonding strip installed, the red wire coming from the transformer could go to one of the terminals and any other wires connected to the other screws would be bonded to it. Those other wires would be from the (RH) terminals on all the thermostats.

Another terminal strip could be set up the same way for all the pink wires, another for the orange wires, etc. These terminal strips only cost a few dollars each, and have plastic “caps” that prevent other stray wires from making contact with the screws.

THE RELAYS

The bright yellow boxes in Figure 3 are small, single pole, general purpose relays. Figure 5 shows one example, which has single pole/double throw (SPDT) contacts. These relays have male quick connecter terminals.

These relatively inexpensive relays all have coils that operate on 24VAC, and contacts capable of switching line voltages at currents up to 10 amps, which is typically above what’s required in most residential and light commercial systems.

“The industry needs products to support the trend towards hydronic heating and cooling.”

CUSTOMIZED

The wiring diagram shown in Figure 3 is, in essence, a custom controller that coordinates with multiple heat/cool thermostats to operate zoned fan-coils in both heating and cooling.

It operates an air-to-water (or geothermal water-to-water) heat pump as needed in both modes, and it uses simple and inexpensive hardware to create the necessary control logic and keep the wiring organized. It’s also designed to be as simple and “goof-proof” as possible.

Earlier in this article I mentioned that this is ‘one’ way to control multiple heating and cooling zones. Variations of this approach are possible depending upon the internal electrical design of the fan-coils, and how that wiring could coordinate with the specific thermostats used.

For example, some fan-coils may have a normally open dry contact that could be used in lieu of the end switches in the zone valves to signal the heat pump to operate.

After selecting specific products for the thermostats and fan-coils create the wiring diagram and pay close attention to keeping 24VAC circuits powered by different transformers from being inadvertently electrical interconnected.

Keep in mind that all the zones must operate in the same mode at any given time, as determined by the master mode selection switch.

Finally, here’s a “nudge” to manufacturers. The North American market for hydronic heat pumps is expanding. Residential and light commercial systems are being built for hydronic heating and cooling, so the industry needs products that support this trend.

Examples include zone controllers for heating and cooling, insulation shells for circulators and other components, pre-insulted PEX, PEX-AL-PEX, PERT tubing, and controllers for managing smaller radiant cooling systems.

There are some progressive manufacturers that have understood this trend and provided products that enable it. Opportunity and willing customers are waiting for others to join in. <>

ProVore® Grinder Liberty Pumps

The ProVore® grinder from Liberty Pumps is designed for use in applications where addition of a bathroom or other fixtures below sewer lines requires pumping. Traditionally, solids-handling sewage pumps in the 4/10 hp. to 1/2 hp range, have been used for these applications. The solids-handling sewage pump design passes waste and solids through the pump in full-form without shredding or grinding. With lower pumping heads typically only being 8 to 10 feet (the height of a residential basement), this technology, for years, has provided a reliable cost-effective means to add a bathroom or other fixtures below gravity sewer lines; however, while providing an effective solution, the solids-handling pumps are susceptible to jamming on unwanted debris – such as feminine products, rags or other difficult solids that may get flushed into the system. This is where the ProVore® comes in. It features Liberty’s patented V-Slice® cutter technology utilized in its popular Omnivore® series of 2 hp. grinder pumps. This proven cutter design easily shreds solids - such as feminine products, rags and other unwanted debris. The ProVore® brings this advanced technology down to a more cost-effective residential level. Powered by a 1 hp motor, this smaller grinder is designed to operate on a standard 115- or 230-volt circuit – requiring only a 20-amp breaker. No special wiring, as is necessary with larger hp grinder pumps, is needed.

The pump comes with a 2" vertical style discharge (common on solids-handling pumps) and a standard leg pattern matching Liberty’s LE-Series. This allows for an easy retro-fit into already existing systems. Engineered with flow rates to 46 GPM – the ProVore® provides adequate scouring in 2" discharge lines with lower pumping heads commonly found in residential basement installations. Compact factory assembled systems are available in both simplex and duplex versions. The ProVore®380 uses Liberty’s very popular PRO380 basin.

The ProVore®680 is a compact duplex version of the 380. Standing only 24" tall, this small profile duplex system utilizes two ProVore® pumps for uninterrupted service.

Whether it’s a traditional solids-handling pump or a newer style grinder, Liberty’s broad offering of products can satisfy a variety of pump applications, and with its aggressive product development strategy, you can be assured Liberty will continue to meet the needs of today’s rapidly evolving market.

The Invisible Efficiency: Solving the Modern Ventilation Crisis RenewAire

As building codes tighten and energy costs climb, the conversation around indoor air quality (IAQ) has shifted. It is no longer enough to simply “move air”; the modern building must breathe intelligently. With rising health standards, energy recovery ventilation (ERV) has moved from a luxury add-on to a mechanical necessity. Nowhere is this shift more evident than in the design of the RenewAire HE05, the latest evolution in the award-winning HE Series.

NAVIGATING THE 62.1 COMMERCIAL STANDARD

For engineers and architects, the primary hurdle in light commercial design is meeting the rigorous demands of ASHRAE Standard 62.1. While the 62.2 standard governs low-rise residential spaces, 62.1 is the commercial benchmark that dictates significantly higher fresh-air volumes based on floor area and occupant density. In high-occupancy or VOC-heavy environments—such as hair salons, dormitories, or retail boutiques—meeting this code is non-negotiable.

Traditionally, bringing in that much raw, unconditioned air creates a “load nightmare” for a building’s HVAC system. This is where the HE05 shines. By utilizing RenewAire’s static plate core, the HE05 pre-conditions incoming outdoor air using the energy from the exhaust stream. RenewAire ERVs are engineered to reduce outdoor air loads by up to 70%. By recycling energy that would otherwise be wasted, the HE05 allows developers to downsize heating and cooling equipment, leading to lower capital costs and permanent operational savings.

AN AWARD-WINNING, LOW-PROFILE SOLUTION

The industry has taken notice of this compact efficiency, as the RenewAire HE05 was recently named the 2025 New Product of the Year for Energy Efficiency by Environmental Protection. This award underscores a market shift toward high-performance ventilation that solves complex IAQ challenges without a massive mechanical footprint.

As the “compact specialist” of the lineup, the HE05 is specifically purpose-built for the 120 to 375 CFM range. While the broader HE Series provides a flexible platform that scales up to 8,800 CFM for industrial projects, the HE05 focuses on delivering professional-grade power in a chassis just 12.1 inches high. This ultra-low profile allows it to fit seamlessly into standard T-bar ceilings, tight crawl spaces, and compact attics—areas where traditional commercial units simply cannot go.

WHY STATIC PLATE TECHNOLOGY WINS

What truly sets the HE Series apart is the static plate enthalpic core. Unlike systems that rely on moving wheels or complicated bypasses, RenewAire’s technology is elegant in its simplicity. By managing moisture in the vapor stage, the HE Series eliminates the need for liquid drainage and prevents biological growth, meaning no condensate pans are required. With no moving parts in the energy exchange, RenewAire backs this proven reliability with a best-in-class 10-year warranty.

EXPERIENCE THE FUTURE AT CMPX

The future of indoor air isn’t just about breathing easier—it’s about building smarter. The HE Series proves that you don’t need a large footprint to provide a healthy, award-winning, and code-compliant environment.

RenewAire will be showcasing the award-winning HE05 at the upcoming CMPX show in Toronto. Join us at the Kilmer Environmental Booth #1123 to see the unit’s low-profile design firsthand and explore the full range of the HE Series product line.

Intertherm: GLP Canada

Purpose-Built Equipment For Factory-Built Homes

Intertherm has been pioneering HVAC solutions for manufactured homes since 1919 — over a century of innovation, purpose-built for manufactured housing. Intertherm products are specifically engineered to be compact and installation-ready, designed to fit seamlessly within the space constraints and production workflows of factory-built homes. From furnaces to air conditioners, every unit is built to drop right into the manufacturing line. The product design reduces installation time, minimizes rework, and helps OEMs keep production moving.

That factory-first approach matters. Standard residential HVAC equipment isn’t designed for the realities of modular construction — tight mechanical closets, transport vibration, and the need for fast, repeatable installation on the production floor. Intertherm addresses these challenges with equipment sized and configured specifically for this environment, giving builders confidence that the HVAC system will perform from the factory floor to the home site.

GLP Canada has been at the heart of this industry since its founding. For over 68 years, we’ve supplied and supported Intertherm equipment and parts across Canada, partnering with our vendor (Nordyne/Rheem), distributors, and home OEMs to deliver unmatched expertise in product, technical support, supply chain, and warranty. Our reputation is simple: focused, reliable HVAC solutions for manufactured and modular housing. Today, factory-built housing is recognized as an important part of Canada’s strategy to deliver more homes faster and with higher quality control. We’re proud to support that momentum. We remain committed to bringing the product knowledge and industry experience that help our partners build with confidence.

A lot has changed over 68 years. Our commitment to this industry and our partners hasn’t. Visit us at Booth 533 at CMPX in Toronto to see our complete offering.

CANADIAN PROS ARE MOVING TO MEGAPRESS®

In the fast-paced world of Canadian mechanical contracting, time isn’t just money—it’s your reputation. As the CMPX Show highlights the latest in HVACR innovation, Viega MegaPress continues to redefine jobs across the country.

For decades, threading and welding black iron pipe was the industry standard, despite the heavy equipment, messy oils and fire hazards. Viega changed that narrative by introducing the first press system for carbon steel. Today, it remains the gold standard for Canadian pros who refuse to compromise on safety or speed.

WHY VIEGA MEGAPRESS?

Unrivaled Safety

MegaPress eliminates the need for hot work permits and fire watches. In tight retrofits or high-occupancy Canadian commercial buildings, the ability to join pipe without an open flame is a game-changer for risk management.

The Smart Connect® Advantage

Peace of mind is built in. Viega’s patented Smart Connect technology allows installers to easily identify unpressed connections during pressure testing.

Built for the North

Whether you are working on hydronic heating, chilled water or compressed air, MegaPress fittings feature a high-quality zinc-nickel coating. This provides superior corrosion resistance, essential for the demanding environments of Canadian infrastructure.

Drastic Efficiency

Installations that used to take days now take hours. By reducing labor time by up to 90% when compared to traditional methods, MegaPress allows you to bid more competitively and move your crew to the next project faster.

PRECISION UNDER PRESSURE WHY CANADIAN CONTRACTORS TRUST VIEGA PROPRESS®

In the Canadian mechanical industry, the margins for error are slim, and the deadlines are tighter than ever. As the CMPX Show showcases the future of HVACR, one thing remains certain: efficiency on the job site is the ultimate competitive advantage. For Canadian contractors, Viega ProPress isn’t just a fitting. It’s a proven system designed to maximize uptime and minimize risk.

Engineered for the Canadian Market

Whether you are working on a high-rise in Toronto or a residential retrofit in Vancouver, ProPress offers the versatility required for diverse climates. With over 400 fitting configurations in copper and stainless steel, it is the only system approved for more applications than any other brand. From potable water and hydronic heating to lowpressure steam and compressed air, Viega provides a single, reliable solution that meets rigorous CSA, NSF and NPC standards.

The Smart Connect® Advantage

Safety and reliability are paramount. Viega’s patented Smart Connect technology allows installers to identify unpressed connections during initial pressure testing. This ensures that mistakes are caught on the spot, not weeks later when the walls are closed. This “peace of mind” technology is why Viega remains the #1 choice for professionals who stand behind their work.

Squeeze More Profit from Every Job

ProPress eliminates the need for hot work permits and fire watches. In tight retrofits or high-occupancy Canadian commercial buildings, the ability to join pipe without an open flame is a game-changer for risk management.
