Celebrating 45 years This issue of Greenhouse Canada is quite symbolic not just in that it officially marks the publication’s 45th anniversary, but the December 2025 edition puts an exclamation point on a year that put the sector’s resilience to the test. While going through past issues to compile our anniversary retrospective, it’s become quite evident that 2025 isn’t singular in being a turbulent year for this industry but it seems unique in its day-to-day unpredictability in our relations with our neighbour to the South. This uncertainty and unpredictability will continue to plague the country and industry in the years to come, but 2025 has shown that in the face of adversity, this sector’s strength is the community it has built through the years of change, growth, and hardships. At every industry event this past year, the question of tariffs and trade hung over the gathering but many of the conversations and knowledgesharing sessions focused on ways growers can mitigate impacts to their

Haven Greens launches Costco-exclusive leafy blend Haven Greens has announced the launch of ‘Trillium,’ a blend of leafy greens that will be available exclusively through Costco. According to a recent press release, the Trillium Blend, containing a mix of baby green leaf, baby red butter leaf, arugula and mustard greens, is named after Ontario’s provincial flower as it showcases ‘the best’ the province has to offer. “Producing an exclusive new blend for Costco, a retailer so widely beloved in our home province and beyond, within our initial launch year has been an honour,” said Jay Willmot, CEO and founder of Haven Greens, in the release. “Costco’s commitment to consistently providing Canadians with quality products aligns closely with

our goal of providing a fresh, sustainable, and readily available alternative to seasonal field lettuce.” The new blend will be grown at Haven’s new state-of-the-art, five-acre, automated greenhouse at Kinghaven Farms in King City, ON. The partnership marks a significant milestone in the company’s expansion; Haven officially launched in February 2025, with its first harvest following in March 2025. Production at Haven Greens is touchless and pesticide-free and the company is reportedly on track for net-zero operations by 2027. This approach to production, the company claims, assures that its greens are “ready-to-eat without washing and have an extended shelf life of up to five weeks.”(Source: Haven Greens)

RED SUN FARMS UNVEILS NEW PURPLE TOMATOES AND MINI CUCUMBERS Red Sun Farms is celebrating the company’s recent turn at the International Fresh Produce Association’s (IFPA) Global Produce and Floral Show held in October in California, where the company unveiled several new products. The Kingsville-

headquartered grower launched three new innovations at the show, including a new purple tomato variety called ‘Empress’ and two new additions to the company’s ‘Chef’s Collection’ line: a curated snacking tomato blend and a light-green mini cuke.

UofG CEA researchers awarded NSERC prize The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has awarded a group of researchers from the University of Guelph with the Synergy Award for Innovation for their work in controlled environment agriculture (CEA). Drs. Mike Dixon, Youbin Zheng and Thomas Graham were honoured for their “pioneering” collaboration with Norway’s Intravision Group and its Canadian subsidiary, Intravsion Light Systems, in developing an advanced vertical farming system. The Synergy Awards for Innovation are handed out annually to highlight partnerships between academic institutions and partner organizations. Winners are awarded a $200,000 research grant. For 45 years, Greenhouse Canada has served as a reflection of the progress and growth of the nation’s commercial greenhouse sector. Its pages are a chronicle of the people, ideas and passion that has made this sector a global leader in controlled environment agriculture. The publication has marked a number of milestone anniversaries with some powerfully written and thoroughly encapsulating feature articles about Greenhouse Canada’s evolution from its first humble edition published newspaper-style in December 1980. The last such retrospective was published in the December 2020 issue for the magazine’s 40th anniversary and written by then-editor, Greta Chiu. Prior to that, longtime editor Dave Harrison took a deep stroll down memory lane in Dec. 2015 and quoted the magazine’s first editor, Jim Brown: “We were scaredhe said of that initial launch in 1980. “We really didn’t know what the reaction would be.” FORMATIVE YEARS Early coverage focused on practical crop advice, pest management and the economics of glass- and plastic-covered production; essentials for growers building their businesses. As operations invested in lighting, automation and new varieties, Greenhouse Canada tracked each step, evolving from a printed trade resource into a

multi-platform hub where technical journalism met community storytelling. In those first years, the market changed quickly; a retrospective on the 35th anniversary of the magazine noted that through the 80s, the grower population in Canada more than doubled and greenhouse production was modernizing with the transition from soils to engineered media, the adoption of climate screens and an increasing preoccupation with energy costs. As the industry matured, so too did the scope of Greenhouse Canada. The 1990s and 2000s saw deeper investment in environmental control systems, hybrid coverings, high-wire training systems, and biological controls and the magazine reflected this shift in its content as coverage moved from ‘what works’ advice to asking ‘what’s next?’ EARLY AUGHTS During this period of growth, the publication took on the role of community connector and events, like the publication’s Grower Day (which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2025) became an annual focal point, providing a unique and intimate opportunity for growers and industry partners to come together to share knowledge and ideas. In this dual role as chronicler and connector, Greenhouse Canada offered the sector an opportunity for more coherence across provinces, crops and business models. The shift online and into digital editions with archive access further extended the publication’s reach and gave greenhouse professionals access to decades of industry knowledge. The website’s steady stream of news briefs, analysis, and event coverage made it a daily touchpoint rather than a once-amonth read. Decoding how light shapes every stage of greenhouse cannabis cultivation BY BY VIKRANT DHAWAN AND MOHYUDDIN MIRZA

Greenhouse cannabis production represents a convergence of plant physiology, optical engineering, and climate control technology. As a photophilic species, C. sativa demonstrates strong positive correlations between incident photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) and floral biomass yield. Unlike traditional greenhouse vegetables, which reach light saturation at moderate irradiance, cannabis maintains a steep linear response curve to increasing light levels, if carbon dioxide concentration, nutrient availability, and leaf temperature are simultaneously optimized. The integration of natural light and

supplemental electric illumination thus represents a central component of modern cannabis horticultural strategy. This requires quantitative understanding of light energy conversion processes, canopy light interception, and environmental feedback mechanisms that affect stomatal function and photosynthetic efficiency. LIGHT UTILIZATION AND PHOTOSYNTHETIC DYNAMICS Photosynthetic light response Photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) directly governs the rate of carbon assimilation in cannabis leaves. Empirical studies have shown

Because transpiration rate increases with both PPFD and leaf temperature, co-ordinated adjustment of humidity, airflow, and irrigation frequency is essential when implementing high-intensity lighting regimes. DAILY LIGHT INTEGRAL (DLI) AS A QUANTITATIVE METRIC DLI quantifies the cumulative photosynthetically active photons (400–700 nm) incident per unit area per day, expressed as mol m¯² d¯¹. It provides a comprehensive measure of total daily light exposure and is a superior predictor of biomass accumulation compared with instantaneous PPFD readings. DLI is derived from the time-integrated PPFD as:

that net CO2 uptake continues to increase up to PPFD values of approximately 1,200–1,500µ mol m¯²s¯¹ at optimal leaf temperatures (24–28 °C) and CO2 enrichment levels between 800–1,200 ppm. However, leaf-level saturation typically occurs near 1,000 µ mol m¯² s¯¹. Beyond this threshold, further increases in PPFD mainly enhance whole-canopy productivity through deeper light penetration rather than higher single-leaf assimilation, provided canopy architecture allows adequate photon distribution. Photorespiration and CO2 dynamics In cannabis, photorespiratory losses can exceed 20 per cent of gross photosynthetic output under suboptimal CO2 levels or elevated leaf temperature. When cannabis doesn’t get enough CO2 or gets too hot, it loses more than 20 per cent of its photosynthesis energy through a wasteful process called photorespiration. By raising CO2 levels to around 900–1,200 ppm, plants use CO2 more efficiently and waste less energy — boost14 GREENHOUSE CANADA - December 2025

ing growth and photosynthesis by about 30 to 40 per cent. Effective photorespiration management therefore requires not only adequate CO2 supplementation but also environmental regulation to sustain high stomatal conductance and minimize diffusional limitations. VAPOUR PRESSURE DEFICIT (VPD) AND GAS EXCHANGE REGULATION VPD defines the evaporative gradient between the leaf intercellular space and ambient air, influencing both stomatal aperture and transpiration rate. Optimal control of VPD ensures a balance between transpirational cooling, CO2 diffusion, and water-use efficiency. For cannabis cultivation, recommended operational VPD setpoints are as follows: • Vegetative stage: 0.8–1.0 kPa • Early flowering: 1.0–1.3 kPa • Late flowering / ripening: 1.3–1.6 kPa Values below 0.6 kPa reduce transpiration and nutrient flow, while values above

where PPFD is measured in µ mol m¯²s¯¹ and in seconds. At DLI values below ~20 mol m¯²d¯¹, cannabis exhibits elongated internodes, lower biomass accumulation, and reduced trichome density. Consistent yields and cannabinoid concentrations require maintaining a minimum of 30 mol m¯²d¯¹ throughout flowering. ENVIRONMENTAL INTEGRATION AND ENERGY BALANCE Supplemental lighting modifies greenhouse energy fluxes through both sensible and latent heat. High-intensity lighting can elevate canopy temperature by 2–5 °C, necessitating co-ordinated adjustments in ventilation and dehumidification capacity. Dynamic climate control algorithms should synchronize lighting output with HVAC and irrigation systems to prevent rapid fluctuations in leaf temperature or relative humidity. IMPORTANCE OF NATURAL LIGHT IN GREENHOUSE CANNABIS PRODUCTION Natural sunlight remains the foundation of greenhouse cannabis cultivation, providing the most energy-efficient and spectrally balanced source of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). Its dynamic spectrum promotes robust morphogenesis, pigment development, and balanced secondary metabolism that are difficult to replicate entirely with artificial fixtures.

SUGGESTIONS From a practical standpoint, optimizing cannabis productivity under greenhouse conditions requires a data-driven integration of natural and artificial light inputs. Growers should continuously monitor solar radiation, canopy temperature, and CO2 concentration to adjust supplemental lighting intensity, photoperiod, and VPD in real time. Employing spectral-tunable LED systems enables precise energy allocation during periods of low sunlight, while automated shading and reflective materials help prevent excessive irradiance in mid-summer. A seasonal calibration strategy — balancing sunlight capture in summer with CO2-enriched supplemental lighting in winter — ensures year-round uniformity in plant growth, cannabinoid profiles, and operational energy efficiency. During summer, abundant solar irradiance often supplies most of the crop’s light demand, reducing reliance on supplemental lighting and improving energy efficiency. Conversely, in winter months or in regions with shorter photoperiods, the decline in natural DLI can reduce photosynthetic activity, delay floral maturation, and lower cannabinoid concentration unless compensated by some supplemental lights. Therefore, optimum light management is necessary to fulfill the requirements for green house cannabis plants throughout the year to attain higher yield and cannabinoid formation.

CONCLUSION In greenhouse cannabis systems, light management defines the physiological and economic performance boundaries of the crop. A comprehensive strategy integrating natural irradiance capture, supplemental light supplementation, VPD stabilization, and CO2 optimization is essential to achieve maximal photosynthetic efficiency and uniform product quality. Maintaining DLI levels between 35 and 50 mol m¯²d¯¹, with precise spectral control and environmental synchronization, supports consistent biomass accumulation and cannabinoid yield while minimizing energy waste.

As we get into Part 2 of the results from the 2025 Sawaya Garden Trials, here’s a look some of the criteria we consider when assessing a cultivar’s performance: • Plant habit • How long the cultivar looks good • Plant body (foliage health and habit) • Flower power performance (how long and regeneration) • Rain recovery time • Drought tolerance • Deadheading requirement • Garden appeal from three metres • Garden appeal from 30 metres • Disease resistance • Insect resistance • Fragrance • Colour With this in mind, on a scale of one to 10, we scored every cultivar from both a grower's point-ofview and consumer's point-of-view. Eighty per cent of the trial cultivars graded above eight in both categories. Here’s a look at the second set of highlights from the trials. 1. Pentas - Lucky Star Pink, 2. Pentas lanceolota - Star cluster White are just two pentas varieties that performed very well through the whole summer. Pentas are magnets for hummingbirds, takes the rain with instantaneous recovery, and loves the sun and heat; perfect for hot southern Ontario weather. Pentas requires minimal deadheading

because the flowers last a long time and three flower generations still look good at the same time. Pentas is a slow grower so starting pentas early in the season to have a large plant is key to consumer appeal. Customers that tried it previous seasons ask for it by name. It’s great in the landscape, containers, and combinations with other heat-loving varieties. 3. Lantana - Camara Sundance Yellow, 4. Lantana camara - Bandolista Pineapple are two more heat-loving varieties that performed great through the entire summer. Butterflies and hummingbirds love the lantana, which requires little dead heading. Rain does not hinder lantana too much and it will bounce back quickly. Great in landscape, hanging baskets and combinations. 5. Ageratum - Monarch Magic I would rename this Ageratum variety ‘Monarch magnet' because you cannot chase the monarchs away from it, especially in September. 6. Salvia - Mystical Blue is a more compact blue salvia that branches well if given enough growing time. Mystical Blue also attracts hummingbirds through the whole summer season because the flowers age well and do not drop off so the florets hold the fluid that the hummingbirds go after. Mystical blue can hold three to four generations of flowers, and all generations look great at the same time. Great in the landscape if planted from a six-inch pot or gallons to have instantaneous garden appeal. Mystical would make an eye-catching centrepiece for combo planters. 7. Zinnia zesty fuchsia is one colour of the Zesty series Zinnia Elegans, a type of annual zinnia known for its vibrant, double, fuchsia-coloured flowers with gold centres. This series requires minimal maintenance, though deadheading will encourage more blooms, and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Excellent for mass plantings or large. Needs full sun for strong stems and flower power and could be used for cut flowers. 8. Cuphea – Honeybells is a full-sun plant known for its bicolour rose tubular blooms tipped with light yellow. Honey bells have a semi trailing habit makes it great for hanging baskets and container

combinations. Honeybells is very attractive for hummingbirds due to the nectar in their tubular flowers. Flowering from early spring to late summer , Honeybells loves heat and rain recovery is immediate. 9. Bidens - Campfire Flame is vigorous and heat tolerant. Aptly named, the Campfire Flame keeps its orange colour through the hot summer which grows deeper in late summer when the average temperatures are lower. Biden can take cool temperatures, making it a terrific addition to fall combinations. Excellent performer in landscape garden borders and containers where it stays compact and does not split. 10. Impatiens - Sunpatiens Compact Rose Glow is one colour of the sunpatiens series that tolerates high sun levels. It grows in partial shade conditions but will have much flower power in the sun. It is very resistant to diseases especially Downy mildew. One of the best landscape series that will perform from spring to mild frost. No deadheading needed and it is very floriferous that is not affected by the rain. Sunpatients can be produced in gallons for landscape, or in large container or with combinations. It has been highly rated in our trials for over 20 years.

The double flowers put on a great show but do not produce as many and take along time to recover from the rain. Breeders are working on developing smaller double flowers which will hopefully make for more floriferous varieties which can tolerate rain much better than the double grandiflora varieties. The grandifloras petunias perform well in the greenhouse but have been known to have a not-so great garden performance due to their poor rain tolerance and less-than desirable flower power. The multiflora has the sweet spot of many showy flowers but not too large, so the rain does not set them back and soon after the rain stops and the sun comes out, the flowers bounce back like nothing happened. The milliflora even they can stand the rain very well and have excellent garden performance I call these three-metre plants because if you look at them from 30-metres the foliage will overpower the blooms. And finally, for any petunia to have great garden performance, genetically it should be self-branching because that is the site of the fresh flowers. The plant habit should also mound or trail to provide a full-plant look and not split. Petunia flowers are avaialble in an enormous range of colours and multicolour flowers, which is great, but if they do not grow on a good performing plant, the flower colour doesn't mean much. OTHER TOP PERFORMERS 11. Portulaca - Rio Grande Yellow looks great during the day and goes to bed early like all other portulaca where the flowers go to sleep at sundown or cloudy days. as a gradual-release nutrient source when blended into peat. Basil was used to evaluate how wool– amended peat mixes affect plant growth and nutrient dynamics. Seeds were started in 72-cell trays and transplanted after three weeks into 15 cm pots, each containing one litre of growing medium. Three fertilizer regimes were tested across all media: no fertilizer, half strength, and full strength. Full-strength fertilizer supplied 200 parts per million nitrogen, while half-strength solution contained half that concentration.

Plants were irrigated weekly with either fertilizer solution or distilled water for the unfertilized control. Rainwater collected on-site was used to prepare nutrient solutions, and care was taken to apply equal volumes of liquid to each pot to maintain consistent moisture conditions. Plant growth was monitored weekly by measuring height and chlorophyll content on the youngest, fully expanded leaf. At harvest, shoots and roots were separated, cleaned, and oven-dried to determine total biomass.

Leachate samples collected using the pour-through method were analyzed weekly for pH, electrical conductivity, and key nutrients such as nitrate, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. These measurements helped track nutrient release and availability in the wool-amended media over time. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with four replications per treatment. Data were statistically analyzed to determine the effects of wool rate and fertilizer level on plant growth and nutrient response. PLANT GROWTH RESPONSE Basil plants responded strongly to the different growing media blends. Those grown in pure peat without fertilizer were small and pale, reflecting the limited nutrient availability typical of peat-based substrates. Plants in mixes containing five or 10 per cent sheep wool grew taller, had richer, green foliage, and accumulated more dry biomass even without added fertilizer. These treatments performed as well as or better than fertilized peat, showing that moderate wool incorporation can naturally enhance nutrient supply and plant vigour. However, plants in media with 20 per cent

wool failed to survive beyond the second week, indicating too much wool can lead to early stress and nutrient toxicity. NUTRIENT DYNAMICS Wool acted as a slow-release source of nitrogen and potassium. Potassium was released quickly after planting, providing an initial nutrient boost, while nitrogen became available gradually as the wool fibres decomposed. This delayed nitrogen release aligns with previous research showing that wool’s protein structure mineralizes slowly over time. The gradual nutrient supply in the five- and 10-per cent wool treatments supported steady plant growth, while higher wool rates (15–20 per cent) led to excessive nitrate accumulation and salt stress. SALINITY AND PH TRENDS The pH of the wool-amended mixes increased over time, stabilizing near 6.5, a level suitable for most greenhouse crops. Electrical conductivity (EC) readings revealed that higher wool rates initially caused high salinity, especially in the 15 per cent and 20 per cent wool mixes. After a few irrigation cycles, these levels declined as salts leached from the media. The five- and 10-per cent wool mixes-maintained EC within optimal range for basil, balancing nutrient release and salt concentration. CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM, AND SODIUM LEVELS Calcium availability was higher in peat mixes that had been limed, while wool-amended media especially those without lime had lower calcium levels. Magnesium increased slightly with wool addition but remained below recom-

mended range for most greenhouse crops. Sodium levels were initially high in wool mixes but dropped after two weeks as the salts flushed out through leaching. PRACTICAL TAKEAWAYS Incorporating moderate amounts of wool (5–10 per cent by volume) into peat-based media can improve nutrient availability,

plant growth, and chlorophyll content, even under reduced fertilizer inputs. The wool’s gradual nutrient release can help reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers while recycling an agricultural byproduct. However, excessive amounts (15 per cent or more) can create salt and nutrient imbalances that negatively affect plant health. Overall, these findings point to sheep wool as a promising, sustainable amendment for greenhouse media blends particularly when used in moderation and combined with standard fertilization and pH management practices. Our results highlight the potential of turning a simple agricultural by-product into a smart, nutrient-releasing ally for greenhouse growers. These trials were conducted on a short-season basil crop, and studies evaluating the sustained effects of wool on longer-season fruiting crops such as peppers and strawberries are underway. Agriculture is ‘growing’ older in Canada. According to a 2023 report from RBC, by 2033, 40 per cent of Canadian farm operators will retire and 66 per cent do not have a succession plan. The same report forecasts a “shortfall of 24,000 general farm, nursery, and greenhouse workers.” Aging operators place, the report states, “agriculture on the cusp of one of the biggest labour and leadership transitions in the country’s history” that Canada is not prepared for. Members of the greenhouse industry, however, have a more optimistic view. CONSEQUENCES “Without solutions to ensure the sector continues to grow with the next generation of farmers, Canada could risk becoming less competitive on the global market, said Amanda Norris, a senior economist with Farm Credit Canada. "There needs to be a focus

on productivity. Namely efficiency and innovation.” Size affects financing and how a greenhouse business is organized. With its slim profit margins along with the high cost of land, new greenhouses are challenging to launch. “The size and scope of the business,” Henriet DeBruin notes, affects the skillset needed in someone carrying the business into the future. DeBruin, along with husband Arjun, owns DeBruin’s Greenhouses near Thunder Bay. She observes that in a large greenhouse business, an operator is “like a CEO” where you need to “know your people” because you depend on them. She adds: “As you get bigger, you have to learn the business and know the people and the crops.” Financing is an important but difficult issue. “It has been a challenge since day one.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 51

As a dairy farmer’s daughter DeBruin claims to have a long view of agriculture: “The skills used in the greenhouse business are not any different from another business,” she said. “You’re doing what needs to get done.”

She concedes training in business “is always good.” However, “You learn on the job.” Indigenous – Indigenous farmers may be a source for future operators. Canada’s farming population decreased 62.7 per cent from 1971 to 2016, during the same period Indigenous involvement grew (CAHRC, 2021). In this period, “Indigenous agricultural operators represented 5,160 (1.9 per cent) of 270,720 agricultural operators in Canada”, a 53.7 per cent increase. The What We Heard Report (CAHRC, 2021) noted challenges to increasing Indigenous greenhouse operators. There is limited communication about opportunities. Financing is a concern as is the lack of “targeted policies and programs.”

New Canadians – According to RBC’s report, Farmers Wanted (RBC 2023), government programs to encourage “foreign skilled workers” is a solution utilized in Japan and New Zealand. The report notes in the EU there has been a loss of 4 million farms since 2005. Youth – “I agree that firstand second-generation growers are aging and many have retired in the last 10 years but we have a strong interest from 3rd generation growers and new investors in B.C.,” said Michel Benoit, CEO, United Flower Growers Co-op. “I believe the picture is different [from that noted in the RBC report] in the greenhouse and horticultural sectors. The nature of the work, location of the farms, working in a protected environment and [being] less susceptible to

environmental factors are why we are not seeing the same trends in our sector.” RBC’s report stated universities and colleges’ programs must become “cross-disciplinary” to address an impending “skills crisis.” Benoit feels that programs like “UFV and Kwantlen and others keep a flow of skilled workers entering the workforce.” Technology – “It is a highly technical industry, as you get bigger you have to learn it,” DeBruin said. “What a greenhouse needs is people and work by hand.” She adds it is difficult to justify a major outlay of money for a robot, for example. Katharine Festeryg’s Edie Farming is an “agricultural technology startup that wants to build Ontario’s first commercial rooftop greenhouses at scale.” Festeryg is working with engineers at Western University to guide her business’s use of “AI technology, a closed-loop hydroponic system, and solar energy.” It is “piloting at 20,000 sq. ft in London, Ontario, on an industrial building with plans to scale to 100,000 sq.-ft following initial pilot size.” The plan is for it to “scale in cities cross the globe — targeting data centres for their waste heat to power the greenhouses.” “Investment in capital, including technology and AI, is important for growth. The greenhouse sector has been performing well in recent years, increasing productivity seven per cent per year on average over the last five years. However, investment in technology paired with training of employees needs to continue to keep these trends up, especially as we see the renewal ratio (i.e., share of workers under 60 compared to share of workers over 60) falling,” said Norris. Statistics in reports may show that retirement is supposed to happen at a certain age. But rather than viewing an abrupt end to the presence of experienced operators it is helpful to view the process of change as gradual, like the changing of seasons. GoodLeaf secures $52M to expand vertical farms in Alberta and Quebec

Ag awards spotlight greenhouse excellence

GoodLeaf Farms is expanding its production facilities in Alberta and Quebec and will establish a research and development centre in Ontario after securing $52 million in funding. The company, which operates three vertical farms across Canada to produce leafy greens and microgreens, announced in a recent press release that the investment from new and existing partners, including Farm Credit Canada (FCC), Power Sustainable Lios and McCain Foods, builds on the momentum the company has built over the past year. Andy O’Brien, CEO of GoodLeaf Farms, said in the release that with demand across the country for their greens nearly doubling in 2025, that “with this new funding, we will double the capacity of our two largest farms in 2026.” The investment will also support the establishment of the Agricultural Centre of Excellence in Guelph, which will be dedicated to developing more sustainable and efficient growing practices that will put GoodLeaf in a position “to lead the vertical farming industry into a strong and viable future,” the company said in the release. “McCain Foods is a homegrown Canadian success story; we invest in fellow Canadian innovators transforming agriculture and advancing sustainability,” said Charlie Angelakos, McCain’s vice president of global external affairs and sustainability in the release. “From the early days, we have been a key partner in GoodLeaf’s development, and we’re excited to continue supporting their mission.” (Source: GoodLeaf Farms)

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness (OMAFA) recently handed out their Excellence in Agriculture Awards at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and the greenhouse industry was well represented amongst this year’s recipients. Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) was honoured for its Greenhouse Goodness marketing campaign in the ‘Promotional Excellence’ category. One of the winners in the ‘Research and Innovation’ category was greenhouse grower, Haven Greens, which launched earlier this year and produces pesticide-free leafy greens out of a new, state-ofthe-art fully automated greenhouse in King City, ON. Vineland Research and Innovation Centre was honoured in the same category for its ongoing work across the horticulture sector. The awards are handed out across 10 categories to highlight “the outstanding contributions of individuals and organizations that are strengthening Ontario’s $51-billion agri-food sector,” the province notes in a recent press release. When the rubber hits the road When thinking about ‘growing media’, most of us naturally gravitate to either an inert medium, such as rockwool, or a peat-based option, and place an order with our local, familiar sales advisor. Of course, there are plenty of others such as coir, perlite, wood fibre, or vermiculite that have their place, but it’s easy to assume the ‘old favourites’ are here to stay and there’s not much happening. But what are the key issues in the world of media these days? A ‘Google’ search, with A.I. help, identified the following updates on growing media at a global level: • “Shifting away from peat; Peat moss was historically the main component, but’ … ‘alternatives like coir (coconut husk) and wood fiber are gaining traction. • Supply chain and ingredient issues; Global supply chain problems have caused shortages of key ingredients like peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. • Rising demand; Overall demand for growing media is increasing due to factors like growing populations, urbanization, and the expansion of soilless growing systems in regions like China. • New growth markets; such as berry production. • Environmental concerns. • Challenges with alternatives; • Coir: While a good substitute for peat, coir can have high levels of soluble salts, sodium, and chloride that need to be monitored and managed.

If you’re not directly involved day-to-day in a growing medium company, it’s easy to perhaps undervalue the impact of the industry.
