Windoor is your best networking opportunity. by Skip Maclean

A good foundation laid

The new PCR represents an opportunity for green innovation.

One of our news items this issue announces the publication of a new North American Product Category Rule for windows and doors by the Institute for Environmental Research and Education. The IERE is a green building consultancy like many others out there, but the PCR was developed by, and is supported by, all of the major international window and door industry authorities in North America, including the American Architectural Manufacturers Association, the Glass Association of North America and the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance. Developing this PCR was the result of two years of effort by volunteer joint committees from these organizations and others. A PCR establishes the basis for Life Cycle Assessments and ultimately Environmental Product Declarations, which are third-party-supported documents outlining the predicted environmental impact of the manufacture and use of a product from cradle to grave.

Marketing environmentally friendly products has been challenged in all industries by the difficulty in making true, apples-to-apples comparisons. Is making a product from recycled materials better or worse than making a product that saves X amount of energy? Is poisoning groundwater more or less impactful than off-gassing volatiles that produce smog? Should you cut down trees to make products, or use oil from oilsands? What contributes more to climate change: consumers heating their houses, or trucking raw materials? The answers to these questions have been hard or impossible to come by, and even changed over time as the focus of environmental awareness has changed. No one knows what “green” really is, so just about everybody can claim to be that way. Which devalues the concept and makes it

almost useless as a marketing tool. Certainly companies have not found that there is much money to be made on marketing green products relative to the cost of developing them.

The new B2B PCR, and the B2C version that is promised to follow, could change some of that. If contractors, architects and consumers become aware of EPDs and start to demand them in green building designs, window and door fabricators may see some benefit to obtaining EPD documentation for their products, and even developing new products with stronger EPDs. We hear all the time, especially from architects, that environmental protection is their number-one priority. Well, here is their chance to put their money where their mouth is and specify based on an objective, internationally recognized green standard. Canadian fabricators will be only too willing to develop products that produce more energy than they take to make and that dissolve into a beneficial mulch for your garden once the warranty expires – as long as buyers show them the money.

That is how it should, and hopefully will, work. What would be unfortunate would be if, instead of the market driving uptake of EPDs, governments became impatient and started writing them into building codes and Energy Acts. Instead of interest and education you get resistance and confusion. Instead of innovation and competition you get cheating and fingerpointing. Ultimately, the whole goal of seeing more environmentally friendly products on the market gets sidelined and whatever contribution this industry can make to reducing humanity’s impact on the planet is eliminated. The fenestration industry has dedicated considerable time and expertise to laying the foundation. Now it is time for the market to build on it.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Groupe Eugenie opens doors

Richard Chauvette, founder of Groupe Eugénie, welcomed customers to the Terrebonne, Que.,-based operation’s fifth anniversary celebration, showcasing a major makeover of its brand-new showroom in July.

“This town is and has always been my home”, said the 51 yearold CEO and native of Terrebonne, where he has always worked and chose to raise his family, including oldest son Jonathan, who works for his father and is expected to eventually take over.

“But retirement still isn’t in the plans”, quipped Chauvette, a dynamically-speaking grey haired man whose demeanor matches his passion for running and developing his business, located in the heart of the Montreal suburb’s industrial park.

Groupe Eugénie integrates all parts of the manufacturing process within its organisation: Eugénie Technologie (design), Eugénie Canada (production), JRC Machinery (sales), Techno-Pro Equipment (maintenance and technical support) and Libra Intégration (software). Techno-Pro is the group’s only company operating outside Terrebonne, with offices located in Warwick, a small town on Quebec’s south shore half-way between Montreal and Quebec City. The remaining four are within a stone’s

throw from each other. JRC Machinery sells locally-produced and imported machines, each respectively showcased in separate rooms, both custom- and serially-made. The party’s atmosphere felt less suburban industrial showroom and more like a trendy city lounge, with a DJ dutifully spinning electro-jazzy tunes while approximately 162 guests sipped wine and fed upon the gargantuan food buffet ordered for the occasion, standing amidst the four machines on display in the 12,000 square-foot room under a dimmed blue neon lighting. A glass of bubbly and a photo booth featuring the group’s company logos greeted attendees in the office lobby.

“We’re making things huge – it’s also our anniversary”, said Chauvette. But another reason justified such a display.

“Our five American distributors are present. We need to make them feel even more confident about our products and the company. In time, I hope we can have around 12 distributors in the U.S., eventually”, said Chauvette.

Among those present were Terrebonne’s mayoral delegate, councillor Claire Messier, and the federal Member of Parliament for the riding of TerrebonneBlainville, Charmaine Borg.

To which Jonathan Chauvette later added, “the dream is just starting.”

PCR for window and doors published

The Institute for Environmental Research and Education has published North America’s first Product Category Rule for windows, enabling window fabricators to develop Environmental Product Declarations recognized by ISO and the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED program. PCRs define the inputs into the window manufacturing process and lay out guidelines for how each input must be documented in a Life Cycle Impact Assessment that ultimately leads to an EPD describing the overall environmental impact of manufacturing the product. The PCR, titled Earthsure PCR Cradle-to-Gate 30171600:2015, covers window inputs from their source to the fabricator’s gate, and is designed to inform the B-to-B market. Another PCR addressing the B-to-C vertical is due for release soon, according to a recent IGMA newsletter. The PCRs were developed over the last two years by a joint committee with members from the American Architectural Manufacturers Association, the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance, the Glass Association of North America and the U.S.

Window and Door Manufacturers Association. This committee is also working on a PCR for processed glass for publication through UL Environment. The PCR covers punched opening windows, ribbon windows (storefront), curtain wall and skylights. The documentation notes that two other PCRs exist for fenestration products, but both reference European standards and cover both windows and doors. North American manufacturers expressed a preference for a PCR focused solely on windows. PCRs are designed to create a level playing field with a common set of standards allowing buyers of window products to compare their overall environmental characteristics through the life of the product. The EPD will list each product’s impact on such areas as contribution to global climate change, acidification, eutrophication, ozone depletion, smog formation, depletion of non-renewable energy and material resources, use of renewable resources, consumption of fresh water and generation of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.

NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR HIRED

The board of directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Darrell Kane as SAWDAC’s new executive director. Kane brings extensive progressive business experience from over 20 years with ICI Paints Canada and the University of Waterloo. While at the University of Waterloo, he was named one of the top leaders under 40 in the industry in North American by College Store Magazine. In addition to his business experience, he brings substantial nonprofit leadership experience from various executive board roles with Campus Stores Canada, the National Association of College Stores, the Kitchener Panthers Baseball Club and the Intercounty Baseball League. Kane will work with retiring executive director, David Mitten, until the end of the year. He will assume full duties of the job Jan. 1, 2016.

Q & A WITH INCOMING SAWDAC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, DARRELL KANE

FR:How did your previous experiences prepare you for this role?

Kane: I was at ICI Paints (Color Your World and Glidden) for 10 years. I

worked in a store warehouse part time in Fredericton, N.B., while I was attending university, and ended my time with the company as the Stratford store manager. The majority of my time was spent with contractors, both residential and industrial. My family was full of trades people so working with contractors every day was kind of like coming home every day. I learned about the value of a relationship. It wasn’t just selling paint. It was about building trust and being seen as a partner to them. When challenges come up, having a relationship with a contractor that is not based purely on price pays dividends.

FR: When did you first become involved with managing non-profit organizations? How did you get into it?

Kane: I got involved in the nonprofit because of my love of baseball. When I was working at the University of Waterloo, I volunteered

as the scorekeeper for the baseball team. I struck up a great relationship with the coaching staff. They coached a junior team in the summer and asked me if I would be their general manager. That is where I got a taste of being in the executive level of volunteer leadership. It was fun. It was a lot of work but the end product was more than worth the effort. I started to volunteer my time to associations that supported and represented the college and university campus store industry in Canada and the U.S. I served on a board of directors for six years and held all the executive roles. I loved the higherlevel, big-picture thinking. It was nice to be in a position to help the industry that I loved. As time when on, I realized my volunteer life was more fulfilling than my professional life, so I decided to make my living in the association management world.

FR: What is appealing to you about association management?

Kane: I enjoy leadership and I have a great love of helping people succeed. There is nothing better than coming up with something (be it a product, service or something as simple as being a sounding board) that helps someone else get to where they want to be. I’ve been fortunate in my life to have many great people that played that role for me. If

it were not for them, I would not be sitting where I am right now so I am very grateful to them.

FR: Do you have an approach or philosophy that you bring to managing nonprofits? What should a good ED try to do?

Kane: Making contact, listening, and acting on what I learn is how I approach my position. The members are the experts in the siding and window industry. On a daily basis, I want to learn what their challenges and issues are so SAWDAC to put some things in place that will help them address their challenges. The long and the short of it is I am here to serve the members, the board, and the staff at the office. To be successful, I need to be a proactive problem solver.

FR: It is early days, but do you have any sense of what challenges are ahead for SAWDAC? What are your goals for the association?

It is too early to say anything specifically. I do know most trade associations are in a state of flux. It is not business as usual. To survive, an association needs to understand what is truly important to its membership and provide them with products and services that they value. My big-picture goal is to have SAWDAC seen as a valuable partner in our members’ businesses.

Darrell Kane, SAWDAC’s new executive director

PPWBS releases new stickers

The Partners Promoting Window and Balconey Safety have released updated screen safety stickers. The new stickers feature an improved design and are available through screen component distributors or can be ordered on the PPWBS website. The PPWBS has also sent thousands of them to EMS groups, property managers and home owners in hopes they will affix them to existing screens.

“With several falls from second- and third-floor windows and highrises, there is an obvious need to educate parents and care givers,” said Jim Parker, PPWBS chair. The former stickers were black and white on a white and black background. The new sticker is red and black on a white background. The new sticker was selected by surveys done at the Windoor show and with consultations with

window manufacturers and EMS groups. EMS people said that “danger” in red colour was what people would best recognize. Also, “danger” is the same in French and English where “warning” is not.

The web sites have added content to encourage education about the dangers of children falling through screens. The safety sites had over 116,000 hits in 2014 and continue to grow in 2015.

AAMA releases condensation rating document

The American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) has created and released a new document laying out comparisons among three different rating systems for condensation on interior surfaces of fenestration products. While root causes vary with climate and occupancy, the formation of condensation

on these surfaces in winter months is deemed problematic in almost all modern buildings. This document addresses some of the common causes and the technical issues related to condensation. It also offers a comparison of the tools available for rating fenestration systems for condensation resistance.

2015 Energy Star award winners

Two window and door companies were recognized by the federal Energy Star program in its annual awards. Manufacturer of the Year went to All Weather Windows and Doors and Promoter of the Year went to Vinyl Window Designs.

The award announcement read, “All Weather Windows is the largest privately-owned window and door manufacturer in Canada, with leadingedge manufacturing facilities in Edmonton and Mississauga, and more than 1,000 dealers across the country. Energy efficiency is central to All Weather Window’s business plan and its brand; in fact, all of its 196,000 product models are Energy Star certified. All Weather Windows dedicates significant resources to research and development with the goal of continually exceeding standards and designing more efficient products. The company increased sales of Energy Starcertified products by seven per cent in 2014 to more than half a million units. It also grew its offering of Energy Star Most Efficient products by 11 per cent to 461 models by refining many of its Energy Starcertified products to meet the Most Efficient 2014 requirements.

“For almost 30 years, Vinyl Window Designs has been a leader in the development and promotion of highefficiency window products, utilizing foam insulation, triple glazing, warm edge spacers, and offering a variety of low-E models. Available across Canada through VWD’s dealers, flagship distributors and directly from the company, virtually every high efficiency window sold for a residential property is Energy Star certified, including nine products that now meet the 2014 Most Efficient specification. VWD’s commitment to Energy Star is apparent in its prevalent use of the Energy Star symbol and messaging on its website and in information materials.

GlassBuild emphasizes communication and growth

GlassBuild America was held Sept. 16 to 18 in Atlanta which was full of more than 7,600 attendees and 420 exhibitors fine-tuning new plans. Even with the world economy struggling, consensus by some of the industry’s top leaders was that the fundamentals are in place and the U.S. economy is expected to grow non-linearly through 2018, barring a geopolitical crisis. There is pressure along the entire supply chain from float companies to freight, fabricators and glazing contractors, however glass supply is expected to be remain available. Competition is fierce. Reports indicate that fabricators across the U.S. are busy with long lead times and quality issues, however machinery and equipment sales were higher than ever even though cash flow is in short supply with the industry ramping up capacity to create better margins and competitive advantages. Communication was the reoccurring theme and the message to attendees was to set clear expectations and then communicate them early and often. Experts are calling it the Amazon Effect and it means communication is more important than ever, especially if for any reason what we promise is not accurate.

According to Glazing Executives Forum speaker Jeff Dietrich, a senior analyst from ITR Economics, it’s not about next-day delivery, “it’s about next day delivery at 11:00. It is about communicating with people if for any reason what you promised is not accurate. It is critically important in the mindset of your clients and customers that what you promise, you deliver on time.”

At the Managing Lead Times in a Busy Market panel discussion, industry experts agreed that while construction is improving, the U.S. still hasn’t caught up to 2007. “We are getting busy again,” said Chris Cotton, general manager of Dlubak Specialty Glass. “It isn’t at the levels prior to the recession but our industry is busy. That’s a good thing. There is plenty of glass out there. The fabricators and whole supply line are gearing back up to those levels.

COVER STORY

PASSIVE ACTIVITY

A close look at this emerging green building trend.

Passive House is a green building concept that calls for structures to have a greatly reduced impact on the surrounding environment. This rigorous, voluntary design process originated in Germany some years ago, and requires that buildings need very little energy for space heating or cooling.

Although mostly used for new structures, it can also be used in reconstruction. In 2010, it was estimated that Passive House buildings numbered about 25,000 in Europe and about a dozen in the United States. That year, the Canadian Passive House Institute was also launched.

In terms of building criteria, the Passivhaus Institute in Germany states that space heating energy demand must stay below 15 kWh per square metre of net living space per year, or 10 W per square metre at peak demand. In hot climates, the space cooling energy demand requirement is roughly the same, with a slight additional allowance for dehumidification. The total amount of energy to be used for all domestic applications (including heating, hot water and electricity) must not in any year exceed 120 kWh per square metre of treated floor area. In terms of airtightness, a maximum of 0.6 air changes per hour at 50 Pascals pressure are allowed and must be verified with an onsite test. Thermal comfort must be met for all living areas during winter as well as in summer, with not more than 10 per cent of the hours in any given year to exceed 25 C.

Extremely high-performance windows with insulated frames are a must in Passive House design.

“A Passive House project will not meet either the performance or comfort and durability requirements without windows that perform well above most currently available, averageperformance windows,” says Bronwyn Barry, design director at California-based One Sky Homes and co-president of the North American

Passive House Network. “This is particularly true for colder climates.” Barry notes that windows in a Passive House are obviously still important for daylighting and ventilation as well, with operable units required in all habitable rooms for any project seeking certification. “We cannot do without windows in buildings,” she says. “However, it is often unwise to have too many. Passive House is all about balance, where energy losses and gains – especially through windows – are carefully managed in order to reduce loads. Too many windows or too much glazing area in a building can cause both excess energy loss and overheating.”

Therefore, window design must be carefully managed for both internal heat loss and solar gain, in what Barry calls a “delicate balancing act” that experienced Passive House designers come to appreciate.

However, she also stresses that the specific materials used to make high-performance windows is generally not so critical. “There are certainly weighted values for each material when life-cycle costs are calculated, but window material choices are often more a function of budget, availability and preference, rather than a function of performance limitations,” Barry says. “Judging from a review of the development of Passive House window design which has emerged from Europe over the past 25 years, suitable high-performance windows have been manufactured from a wide range of materials, including fibreglass, wood, aluminum, uPVC and combinations.”

Because it is obviously preferable to source

windows locally when possible, and with the growing demand for Passive House emerging across the continent, Barry says there is now more reason than ever for local manufacturers to improve and develop their own profiles. “The North American Passive House Network has developed a series of workshops to help educate and train local producers on what these profiles could look like,” she says, “how to design their own profiles and on the process to have these products attain Passive House Component Certification.” (See sidebar.)

One thing many overlook with regard

to Passive House windows, in the view of Rob Bernhardt, is that they must not only perform to a minimum level, but must perform well enough in the climate they are used to, to prevent induced drafts and condensation. “Heath and comfort are required in addition to energy efficiency,” he says. “In my role as president of the Canadian Passive House Institute (CanPHI) West, I believe that to achieve climate change objectives identified by government, dramatic improvements in building energy efficiency are needed, and the proven track record of Passive House buildings,

arising from a careful building science approach, is attracting the attention of both owners and regulators.”

Bernhardt notes that in most cases, a Passive House building offers the most affordable energy-efficient building solution, even with slightly higher design and construction costs. “These new standards are therefore starting the transition from niche to mainstream,” he notes. “Interest in Passive House courses has skyrocketed, and new projects are being built and planned. Most importantly, the scale and complexity of Passive House projects in Canada is

Passive House projects present a nice opportunity for window and door suppliers to showcase their very best products, since the rigorous energy efficiency demands usually can’t be met with regular fenestration. At the same time, the concept allows for flexibility, since it doesn’t proscribe how to meet the tough energy standard.

increasing, and component manufacturers and retailers are increasingly offering the high-performance products required.”

As a Passive House consultant/developer, Bernhardt says he invests heavily in high-performance windows and doors.

“There can be no cold drafts from windows and no interior condensation on frames or glass and therefore the required performance levels vary with the local climate,” he says. “Passive House consultants and builders rely on certification by the Passive House Institute for confirmation that the window meets the required performance characteristics. These are entered into the detailed energy model which is the basis of every Passive House design.”

MANUFACTURER’S VIEW

Glasshaus Living of Woodbridge, Ont., has taken its flagship products (tilt turn windows and doors) and is marketing them to architects and homeowners that are looking to build with Passive House (and Activehouse) design principals in the Toronto and central Ontario cottage country areas north of Toronto. Glasshaus Living marketing lead Laura Weil says Passive House principles are emerging in Toronto architecture, but that so far the demand for Passive House-certified products has been limited. “The windows and doors that are being utilized at this point tend to be our tilt turn window line, tilt turn doors and sliding door system,” she explains. “All of these products carry a true 1 3/8-inch triple glazing cavity and are available with unlimited colour options.”

Weil believes a key reason why tilt turn windows are in

Passive House uses performance-based standards for things like condensation and air ingress. The science is up to you.

demand is “the incredible fresh air draw” they create. “We exhibit this with a sample window that is located at the side of our office,” she says. “When this window is tilted in any time of the year, the air exchange is instantaneous. This allows us to control the temperature and air quality easily – with just a single operating window, which in turn reduces the air conditioning loads of our office.”

“The thermal properties of our windows and doors are escalated when we apply triple glazing and the sound abatement component of these products is always noted as well.” Weil adds, “When the tilt turn windows are closed, the noise is eliminated. This demonstration has inspired home-owners and architects to look at urban locations that may have been too noisy to previously consider.” She notes that infill design with Passive House design principles makes good use of existing properties, which reduces urban sprawl: fresh air draw for a healthier environment, natural daylight for minimal electrical consumption, reduced HVAC demands and a higher level of comfort and wellbeing.

In Bernhardt’s view, we will see many more Passive House buildings in Canada. “Our first Passive House condos in Victoria B.C. sold quickly and clients are looking for more,” he says. “With the number of units we are building, plus the projects being planned nearby, high-performance buildings will soon become an important element in the marketplace. Different levels of government are offering or considering a variety of incentives and programs to advance the construction of ultra-low energy buildings, and that will also drive public awareness of the Passive House benefits.”

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

The Canadian Passive House Institute hosted a workshop in Vancouver on Sept. 30 where the province of B.C. announced the roll-out of a $1 million program to incentivize the production of high-performance windows in that province. That funding is in addition to the $900,000 received by Dynamic Windows to support development of a Passive House Institutecertified wood window.

The North American Passive House Network has also developed a series of workshops for local manufacturers in the Toronto area on Passive House Component Certification: naphnetwork.org/passive-house-windows-workshop-toronto.

KICKSTARTING AN INSTITUTION

Head downtown Nov. 3 to 5 for a completely new Windoor.

For 20 years, Windoor has delivered Canada’s best opportunity for the window and door industry and its suppliers to come together for deal-making, networking and education.

Windoor is familiar territory to everyone in Canada’s window and door industry. This year, show organizers are shaking things up.

It’s a string of success that any show in North America would be proud of. Yet last year, standing on a buzzing show floor while a winter storm raged outside, Fenestration Canada president, Skip Maclean, said, “I want a completely new Windoor.”

Skip’s statement reflects the present reality that every show has to evolve in response to changing industry needs and to give attendees something new and fresh in their experience. That’s why the Windoor volunteer committee surveyed attendees and has incorporated their feedback into a wholesale revamp of almost every aspect of the show. There were no sacred cows in this process, and the result is changes to just about everything from the seminar program to the layout to the hours.

10-MINUTE SPOTLIGHT

Exhibitors that have something to say to the industry will get centre stage for a maximum 10-minute time slot to showcase their newest technologies, hot new products and outstanding services. It’s a chance for you to sit back, sip a beverage, and hear straight from the horse’s mouth about the latest and greatest.

FENESTRATION CANADA EDUCATION SEMINARS

Knowledge is power in today’s economy, so Fenestration Canada has once again put together an outstanding program of thoughtprovoking business information. The “manbehind-the-curtain” format is gone and the stage is now centered in the hall to encourage

casual passers-by to listen in and maybe wander over and sit down.

This year’s show will feature a tipof-the hat to the exhibitors promoting innovation. The FenCan Innovation Station – centrally located for everyone to swoon over – will feature top new products with a big emphasis on the “new.”

STAR-POWERED KEYNOTE

What better way to get warmed up for Windoor 2015 than with inspiring words from a local great like Michael “Pinball” Clemons? Clemons will be taking his talk hard to the centre stage, a new area located in the middle of the show. Beside the stage is the lunch area, which has been drastically reduced in size, and a second refreshment/meeting centre will be featured near the entry. We are

playfully calling this area the FenZone in honour of Clemons’ incredible CFL football career. You simply have to meet this five-foot-six-inches-tall man who survived 12 seasons playing for the Toronto Argos and has had his jersey retired by the team.

Since leaving the field to join the Argos’ front office, Clemons has emerged as one of the most dynamic and entertaining speakers you will ever see. Windoor invites everyone to get down to the show at 4 p.m. on the Tuesday for a big drink of the Clemonade. Now that’s refreshing.

NEW SHOW HOURS

Thursday afternoons at Windoor have been painfully quiet and slow in the past. So Windor has shortened the day on Thursday and will now start the show

Jestin is one of Canada’s top economic researchers, and your chance to hear his presentation is free with your ticket to the show.

CANADA

A look around the country

Skip MacLean is president of Fenestration Canada. He is business development manager for Tru-Tech Doors and has over 40 years’ experience in the window and door industry.

There has always been interest in what is happening in the industry in general and the differences experienced in the various regions across the country. I recently reached out to several individuals and companies across Canada to elicit their take on current and future business activity. Here are some of the responses.

First I asked about the general business climate in the market.

• “Business has been strong since May and remained so all summer. Increased competition however has put a strain on margins.” – a fabricator in Atlantic Canada

• “Sales in Ontario started slowly due to weather concerns but have rebounded strongly during the summer months.” – a fabricator in Ontario

• “Demand for new homes is down year-to-date in Manitoba. The renovation market has remained strong but increased competition is creating a consumer buying market.” – a fabricator in Manitoba

• “Single-family home construction remains strong, while custom home builds had a very slow start. Multifamily market is strong with condo, apartment and townhome construction doing very well.” – a fabricator in B.C.

• “Skittish, due to oil pricing and the trickle-through effect on the whole economy – a supplier in Alberta

Next, I asked for forecasts for the balance of 2015 and beyond.

• “U.S. exchange rates will continue to have a major impact on the price of raw materials, primarily glass and hardware – a fabricator in Ontario

• “Renovation will remain strong in 2015 and beyond providing our economy does not go into recession.” – a fabricator in Manitoba

• “Results for 2015 should remain strong for the balance of 2015 and housing starts are forecasted to increase from 18,700 units in 2015 to 19,200 in 2016 – a fabricator in B.C.

• “Unless oil pricing shows a dramatic improvement, we expect volumes to suffer by as much as 30 per cent in Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.” – a supplier in Alberta

• “Even with an unstable economy being projected, it seems that most window and door manufacturers are optimistic for 2016.” – a supplier in Ontario

• “Prediction for the balance of 2015 is that we will experience a very busy season and we are predicting slightly higher volumes for 2016. Manufacture-direct and the influx of the non-regulated supply of window and door products could adversely affect the market.” a fabricator in Atlantic Canada

• “The focus is on developing value-added products, increasing productivity and improving margins.” – a fabricator/supplier in Ontario

• “As the U.S. emerges from the downturn, additional opportunities are present for those companies looking to expand their sales and territories.” – a supplier in Quebec

• “New product introductions that better suit the changing consumer trends (more minimalistic designs) will be important to ensuring future growth.” – a supplier in Ontario

• “Better than 2015 but company growth might have to come from new development and new business rather than organic growth. Lots of question marks remain for 2016.” – a supplier from Quebec

Undertaking this endeavor has reinforced my belief that events such as Windoor and the Fenestration Canada AGM are critical to the industry and all its stakeholders. Many thanks to the following contributors: Westeck Windows in Alberta, Extreme Window and Entrance in New Brunswick, Mennie Canada in Ontario, De-Mar Window Hardware in Ontario, TruTech Doors in Ontario, Fenestration Components International in Alberta, Paramount Windows and Doors in Manitoba, AquaSurtech in Quebec, Sunview Patio Doors in Ontario, ODL Canada in Ontario, Westech Building Products in Alberta, and Vitre-Art in Quebec.

FIT & FINISH

Fasten seatbelts

You’ve all been there. “We are expecting turbulence. Please remain seated and fasten your seatbelts.” This is how many of us in the fenestration business are feeling these days. It’s not to suggest things are bad, mind you. Like a plane flying through turbulence, there’s little chance of a crash. Just an uneasy feeling of “what if.” It’s the inability to confidently walk through the cabin without faltering. Taking a cue from the pilot and economists alike: it’s sometimes safer just to stay seated, seatbelts fastened.

Never before have I seen such turbulence in business. It’s different than the economic downturn a few years back. That wasn’t turbulence as much as the plane in a nosedive. Today, like turbulence, it’s the uncertainty of the market that keeps us stuck to our seats, and who can blame us. Just recently news of recession

Many of us are doing pretty darn good, all things considered. So why all the inner dialogue?

was made official and floated across every feed.

Much like turbulence, it’s being dismissed as a temporary thing, due mostly to the decline in the energy sector and a strong U.S. dollar. There is a federal election looming and along with it, promises and accusations being hurled at every turn. Throw in ever-changing codes and labeling requirements and you have a perfect storm.

Despite this, we “fenestrators” are surviving. In fact, many of us are doing pretty darn good, all things considered. So why all the inner dialogue?

As pilots of our respective businesses, we may have to make changes to our flight path when navigating through turbulent times. This can manifest into significant supply chain shifts, sometimes to a lesser-priced option and sometimes, but rarely, to an up-market approach. It may lead to a shift in manufacturing processes

and procedures to increase and improve efficiencies, and sometimes it leads to a shift in the approach to the market and distribution network. This end is usually most noticeable. Change how you go about manufacturing a window or door and there is a good chance it will go unnoticed by the vast majority outside the company. Change the approach to market and distribution, and that gets scrutinized by an entire industry.

Typically, distribution of residential windows has taken either a consumer-direct approach or a dealer/distribution model. For as long as I have been in business, distribution is how it’s been done. At the dealer level, a manufacturer can rely on a relatively consistent workflow. Margins are tight and collection can be, at times, cumbersome. Installation and site logistics are often left to the dealer and effective currency hedging can mean the difference between profit and loss.

The direct-sale approach gives the manufacturer full access to the end users. Sophisticated software development allows an almost seamless transfer of information from the on-site sales staff to the shop floor and back to the site – with a streamlined flow of information. Full access to the end user becomes a valueadded asset and the product can often be tailored to the geographic area being serviced. Margins can be generous, but administrative and logistics costs can eat through reserves. Cash flow can be improved with job deposits and collection is often cash-on-completion.

And then there are the anomalies who see success on both sides of the fence. It’s a bit of a balancing act, but distinct market segregation can make for a successful business strategy with each segment providing respective support.

If asked which model works best, I think it’s best decided by the directing management team’s skillsets or the varying levels of responsibilities the owner/operator is willing or able to cope with on a daily basis. Either way, I see much success at every level of this spectrum on a daily basis in the fenestration industry and admire and appreciate the industry leaders in each of these segments.

Fenestration Review reaches over 4,500 Canadian window and door fabricators and dealers, three times per year and every day via Twitter, Facebook and the web. No other trade publication reaches every fenestration company in Canada because no other publication has our focus on our home and native land. That’s why our readers turn to Fenestration Review spring, summer and fall for an exclusively Canadian take on industry news, trends and stories about their friends and neighbours.
