Let’s get the conversation going.

ne of the goals of trade magazines is to act as a kind of internal conversation within a national industry. Since an industry is not one entity but rather a conglomerate of companies, individuals and other organizations, all the “bits” need to talk to each other if there is to be any hope of forming a common culture. Forming a common culture in the window and door industry is probably not something you budget for each year. But without one, business sectors lack identity and are easily ignored by suppliers, governments and the public. They miss opportunities for shared learning, networking, and developing shared practices that reassure the consumer and help everyone to make money. Industry news is the gossipy part of the conversation where fairly raw information about recent events and changes is passed around so everyone has a common understanding of what is going on. It is the soil out of which our more sophisticated opinions grow and fosters the basis for our policies and attitudes within the market. Also, people seem to like it. The news pages are some of the most avidly read in the magazine. But there is a problem with our news. It is too dominated by items from suppliers. As much as we love our suppliers and advertisers, we all understand that they have an agenda to sell us something. Any “news” we read from them will be carefully crafted to show them in the best possible light. And critical news about the supplier that is not flattering will probably never see the light of day. Given these limitations, you are probably wondering why I run supplier press releases at all. The answer is simple: they are often all I have. My inbox fills up daily with well-written, properly formatted, ready-to-go news items from suppliers, complete with photos. When it comes to fenestration fabricators and dealers,

4 FENESTRATIONREVIEWFALL2014

however, I usually find out about changes in their businesses through offhand comments at association functions, months or even years after the fact. If you are not at a given function, or I don’t happen to talk to you there, chances are I’ll never know about that new location you opened, that new salesperson you hired or that new product you are carrying. All this is my problem, not yours. But I want to encourage everyone reading this to take five minutes when something noteworthy happens in your business to drop me a note at pflannery@annexweb.com. Don’t worry about grammar and punctuation – I can fix those. Don’t worry about getting all the information in there – I can ask follow-up questions as needed. Do send a photo. And don’t hesitate if you think your company is too small or the information might be of only local interest. We are here for all window and door companies across Canada, big and small. You might be surprised at the things that can happen with a little exposure outside your normal circle. So let’s get this conversation going. We have had two exciting new developments in the magazine. The first is our endorsement from the Siding and Window Dealers Association of Canada. You can read more about that in the news section. The second is the addition of a third issue of Fenestration Review next summer. There was never enough room in just two issues to talk about everything that is going on in our vibrant industry, and the wonderful response to the magazine so far has allowed us to grow. The summer issue will be focused on window and door dealers and installers. We’ll have content discussing retail sales approaches, mass marketing, installation best practices and many other issues facing you, the person who takes windows and doors to the end user. Dealers, now would be a great time to drop me a line and tell me what you would like to see in the magazine next summer.

INDUSTRY NEWS Action at Quanex This summer, Quanex Building Products became Bostik’s exclusive sales force for its insulating glass sealants in North America. “We’ve worked closely with Quanex in the UK for more than 10 years, building a strong relationship based on a mutual dedication to quality, service and innovation,” said Chris Alderson, business unit director for Bostik. “We’ve found that we are better together as we are able to provide comprehensive IG solutions from spacer to sealant. This announcement VINCE is just one part of our global WARNE rebranding efforts and a reaffirmed commitment to growing our market share in North America.” Quanex continues to sell Bostik sealants under the Edgetherm brand name, including Edgetherm 3500 single-part butyl rubberbased sealant, Edgetherm 3400 hot-applied desiccant MIKE matrix, Edgetherm 3100 and HOVAN 3000 one-component hotmelt butyl sealants. In other Quanex news, the Building Products division has announced it has named Michael B. Hovan general manager of Mikron, its vinyl profile

products division. Hovan will also continue to lead the company’s marketing efforts. “Mike is a seasoned leader with considerable experience in the building products sector. He understands our customers, operations and growth strategies,” said William C. Griffiths, chairman, president and CEO. “We are delighted to have Mike lead our vinyl business.” “I am excited to assume the leadership role for Mikron,” said Hovan. “I have enjoyed working with the leadership team at Quanex since joining the company in 2011 and look forward to executing our growth strategy and serving our customers. My focus will be to strengthen our relationship with our customers, improve customer service and produce high-quality products.” Building Products also promoted Vince Warne to director of technical services. Warne is an industry veteran, previously working as part of the Quanex Insulating Glass Systems team and serving in many roles, including production supervisor, standard spacer business unit manager, operations manager and process engineering manager. Most recently, Warne served as director of quality for Quanex Insulating Glass Systems where he worked in collaboration with the customer service, quality and production teams to overcome specific product quality challenges and enhance customer service levels. Additionally, he has assisted in global quality initiatives to further support international customers, while supporting the transition of the Truseal product manufacturing to Cambridge, Ohio.

Online health and safety help

he Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety has developed a new online occupational health and safety management service, OSH Wise, designed to help organizations establish, maintain and improve their health and safety programs while meeting their legislative responsibilities. The OSH Wise management service can help small to medium-sized organizations establish a health and safety program, as well as to adopt a continual improvement process to meet their health and safety responsibilities and regulatory requirements. The tool can also assist organizations in employee engagement, staying compliant, manage incident reporting and help to eliminate or reduce health and safety risks. “The best way for an organization to keep its employees safe at work is to have a well-developed health and safety program, and ensure that program is 6 FENESTRATIONREVIEWFALL2014

properly communicated, implemented and improved on an ongoing basis. That’s where OSH Wise can help,” says Chris Moore, manager of training and education at CCOHS. OSH Wise provides a web-based framework that promotes a systematic approach to integrating the health and safety of workers into the everyday management of the business. Included in the web-based management service are single seats for six e-courses including Developing an Occupational Health and Safety Program; Hazard Identification, Assessment and Control; Accident Investigation; Workplace Inspections; Health and Safety Committees; and Due Diligence in Occupational Health and Safety. OSH Wise also includes CCOHS publications Implementing an Occupational Health and Safety Program and Job Safety Analysis Made Simple in PDF versions, and five hours of technical support.

Amesbury and Truth combine branding

mesbury Truth, a division of Tyman PLC, has unveiled a new brand identity and tag line unifying the former Amesbury and Truth Hardware brands. This is a significant step in the integration of the two businesses which came together in 2013. Fenestration Review endorsed by SAWDAC Fenestration Review magazine has attracted an endorsement from a new association partner, the Siding And Window Dealers Association of Canada (SAWDAC). The magazine has agreed to work with SAWDAC to communicate to the Canadian window and door industry about the association’s initiatives and activities. Each print issue of Fenestration Review will contain a SAWDAC newsletter as a permanent department. SAWDAC is the association for window and door dealers and installers, especially those working in the renovation market. The association sets standards for quality installation and certifies dealers under the Window Wise program. It also educates consumers about

fenestration technology and installation standards and encourages homeowners to choose certified professionals through the Sill to Sash program. “We are thrilled to receive the endorsement of Canada’s window and door dealer association,”

Renovation Canada said Patrick Flannery, Fenestration Review editor. “With SAWDAC’s help, we are going to make Fenestration Review into a strong, national voice for window and door retailers and renovators, as well as fabricators.”

Fenzi hires in Montreal

enzi North America has announced the addition of key sales and technical support, for its growing insulated glass components business in Canada. Bob Lalonde, based in Montreal, has been appointed regional sales manager for Quebec and Eastern Canada. Fenzi, based in Italy, provides chemicals for the glass processing industry, with the Toronto facility focusing on the IG components side of the business. Fenzi North America manufactures polysulfide at its Toronto facility, while distributing a complete line of other sealants and components used for day-to-day IG production.

“With Bob’s extensive background in IG sealants, his knowledge and support to all his customers will prove invaluable as we move forward with our expansion plans,” says David Devenish, Fenzi general manager. “The recent opening of our new warehouse in LaSalle, Que., is the first step under Bob’s direction. Bob’s experience in the sealant industry and his dedication to servicing his customers’ sealant needs, is exactly the philosophy that we want to bring to all of our customers.” Lalonde was most recently with Bostik Canada for over 20 years, covering the Canadian market with mainly polyurethane and hot melt sealants. Lalonde adds, “I really enjoy being part of the Fenzi team and am thrilled to be working with such a customer-oriented company. INDUSTRY NEWS New CSA lab in Edmonton CSA Group is building its first facility capable of testing windows and doors to meet changes to the updated National Building Code. The new facility is scheduled to open for testing in Edmonton in spring of 2015. “We are very excited to add a new windows and doors lab to meet the needs of manufacturers who will be required to have their products tested for

compliance under the updated National Building Code,” said Nashir Jiwani, CSA Group regional vicepresident for Canada. “The changes to the code will mean every window, door and skylight sold in Canada will have to be certified. Our new lab will provide added value to our clients and as they achieve the necessary certifications for Canadian markets.”

Al Jaugelis launches NAFS blog Al Jaugelis of RDH Consulting in Vancouver has launched a blog on the RDH website titled NAFS in Canada. The new blog will explain the North American Fenestration Standard, specifically NAFS-08 (NAFS11 is not referenced in Canadian building codes), and help window and door manufacturers understand how to comply. The first post on the new blog details ways in which NAFS is different from the previous testing, certification and labelling standards.

According to Jaugelis’s LinkedIn post, he started the blog because “there is little practical information on this subject available online and little awareness of the standard among Canadian architects and engineering consultants. For Canadians, it is a complete overhaul of how we specify and test fenestration.” Jaugelis is a fenestration consultant with RDH, a former president of the Window and Door Manufacturers Association of B.C. and technical consultant with Fenestration B.C.

Attril to cover the West All Weather Windows is welcoming Nigel Attrill to the role of director of sales for its western markets. Attrill has over 22 years of sales experience as well as an economics degree from the University of Calgary. Most recently Nigel was the western Canada regional sales

manager for Carrier Canada. In his new role, Attrill will be will play a critical role leading branch and regional management teams in the development, implementation, and execution of sales strategies, and supporting branch business development initiatives. The key function of this position is to achieve profitable sales growth, for the renovation, dealer and builder channels in Western Canada. Attrill is originally from Calgary but has recently moved to the Edmonton area.

SAWDAC GOLF STAYS SUNNY Predicted thunderstorms did not materialize over the annual Siding and Window Dealers Association of Canada golf tournament Aug. 12 at Victoria Park East Golf Club in Guelph, Ont., much to the relief of golfers and organizers. About 90 golfers enjoyed the excellent weather and the chance to reconnect with friends, colleagues and customers in a lighthearted scramble. A strong line-up of sponsors supported the tournament, including MCF Beddard, Le Page, Sunspace Modular, Vinyl Window Design, Dorplex, Gentek, Strassburger, Vinylbilt, Boncor, Royal Building Products and Consumers Choice. Home Trust sponsored a hole-in-one contest. No one claimed the $50,000 prize, though Jody Crevier of Vinylbilt came close with a shot that ended about 18 inches from the hole and was good enough for a closest-tothe-pin prize. Matt Wyscaver, Greg Birmingham, Mark Smith and Aaron Suhr of Boncor took top team honours with a low score of 11 under. Pat Serrao, Matteo Palmer, Mathew Ferrari and Mathew Maigi came in most honest. Will Wellman of Vinylbilt had a big day on the course, taking home long drive and

the second closest-to-the-pin award. Charlene Walkington had the ladies’ long drive and Cindy Alexander was the closest lady to the pin. Bob Hastings of Vinyl Window Design won $300 in the 50/50 draw. The tournament raised $840 for The Bridges, a Cambridge, Ont., shelter for homeless individuals and families. A tasty prime-rib dinner followed the golf with a heavily laden prize table including a large TV, a cooler full of fishing supplies, a full set of Taylor Made irons and a huge stack of kitchen appliances. SILL TO SASH UPDATE Sill to Sash was first created in 2002 as a compact disc, which could be viewed on either the Fenestration Canada or SAWDAC websites. A new, rejuvenated Sill to Sash will be easier to find with its own website: www. silltosash.com. Sill to Sash is an excellent way for window dealers to explain technical and performance issues relating to windows, doors and skylights to homeowners. Its contents include over 500 pages of information in French and English about windows, doors and skylights. The information is well presented with copy, graphs,

and over 60 animations. The information is generic in nature, which makes it unique and valuable to consumers. There is no proprietary

advertising content. S2S also has a 7.5-minute consumer video. Most of the content of S2S is as relevant today as it was when it was first made. Some re-writing has been done on the topics of Energy Star, codes, standards and certification to reflect changes since 2002. The consumer video is 95 per cent the same as before. The S2S video will reside on YouTube with the video and page views re-formatted to responsive technology to play on laptops, tablets and smart phones. The web page will be search-engine optimized for higher rankings on Google. The S2S website will also be

integrated with a content management system which will be administrated by SAWDAC. This means that information may be edited by us directly to keep the site up-to-date. We are confident that we will see a dramatic increase in people visiting S2S once it has its own website and is on YouTube. Navigating the information on the S2S website will be much easier than it was with the old CD format. An index will be added so users can find information on a specific topic easily.

WINDOW WISE REPORT Window Wise registrations are almost exactly the same as this time last year. The office has seen an increase in registrations over the past couple months. Many dealers are forecasting more installations than in 2013. Our numbers for 2014 are as follows. The total number of installers trained was 36. Total registered jobs were 1,859 with total windows installed and guaranteed 12,295. Seventeen manufacturers participated and 37 installation companies and contractors. We’d like to welcome McMorrow Construction from Saskatoon, Sask., to the Window Wise program! We also hosted three Window Wise installation seminars.

indoor, the premier window and door show in Canada, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. A long way from its humble beginnings as a casual conversation over a few cocktails, Windoor continues to generate excitement for all those attending the annual event. This year spotlights the exhibitors who have maintained a presence at the show year after year. Here they explain why it’s important to be a part of the past, present and the future of Windoor. by JACK KOHANE

TRIMLITE “As a long-standing member of the CWDMA (Canadian Window and Door Manufacturers Association), we felt that it was important to support this new venture called Windoor from the get-go,” says Ron VandenBrink, manager of distribution and sales for Trimlite, a Vancouverbased manufacturer and distributor of exterior and interior doors. “We also saw this as a strategic business decision. As a company based in the west, we wanted to expand into the Ontario and Eastern Canadian market. We felt that Windoor would be a great vehicle in helping us achieve this goal. It has helped us build our business across the country.” Opening its doors in 1983, Trimlite began as a manufacturer of decorative glass inserts for local steel door fabricators, and has since evolved into a manufacturer and distributor of doors, decorative door glass, and related millwork products for the building materials industry. An early embracer of the concept of the global economy, Trimlite established a glass manufacturing location in Vietnam in the mid-1990s and a stile-andrail wood door manufacturing facility in China in 2004. Combined with distribution locations in Surrey, B.C., Burlington, Ont., Renton, Wash., and Ashtabula, Ohio, Trimlite provides door and glass products to such industry leaders as Simpson Door, Plastpro, and Cardinal IG, to name a few. “Owning our own manufacturing facilities allows us to maintain control over our

product, from production to distribution,” notes VandenBrink. “Trimlite can create designs that are simple to intricate, clear to obscure. This is where solid metals, textured and bevelled glass come together to create works of art.” At the inaugural Windoor show, Trimlite showcased its original line-up of doorlites, as well as fiberglass doors and composite jambs. “We’ve greatly expanded the product offering over the years,” continues VandenBrink. “Beyond our 25 decorative families, we now can present Windoor attendees with a full line of raise/lower miniblind and commodity products. Maintaining the traditions of handcrafted products, like decorative glass, is still very important to us. Combining these age-old traditions with modern advancements in design, materials, sealing, hot melts and plastics, you now get a product today that’s far superior to the products of just five years ago, let alone 20.” VandenBrink, who has been with the company since 1986, believes that Windoor has helped put Trimlite on the map as a credible vendor to the door fabricators in Canada. “The show allows us the opportunity to meet with all of our customers and showcase new products and programs for the coming year. We will be featuring some new doorlite designs, and will encourage our customers to give us feedback right on the show floor. As a Windoor exhibitor, you are meeting with qualified buyers and decision makers from all over Canada, the U.S. and some from overseas.

Checking out the latest technology is the main draw for most attendees. Fabricators and dealers can get a lot of shopping done in a short time. Windoor 2014 will feature about 120 exhibitors.

AMESBURY TRUTH The new kid at this year’s Windoor is among the show’s oldest companies, but one sporting a new look, new logo and some new faces. “Windoor is the single most important marketing event we do in Canada,” says Mike McCann, vice-president of sales and marketing for Amesbury Truth, based in the southern Minnesota city of Owatonna. “This year, it’s the ideal venue to unveil our new brand in Canada.” With more than 2,000 employees located across 12 facilities in eight U.S. states and four countries, and facilities covering nearly 1.5 million square feet all together, Amesbury Truth is the North American division of Tyman PLC, headquartered in London, England. Tyman is an international supplier of building products to the door and window industry with manufacturing sites across Europe, Asia, Australia and North and South America. July of 2013, Amesbury was a leader in the fenestration market supplying hardware, sealing, and extruded products to residential and commercial markets. Amesbury was founded as the S.R. Bailey Carriage Company in 1856, producing carriages, poles and sleighs, and was the first to introduce the bicycle wheel. In the 1880s, Amesbury began producing automotive door and window seals. annual premier event is a win-win opportunity to stay connected with his customers, showcase new products, collaborate with key industry leaders and learn about the latest in codes and standards that change from year to year. “Windoor draws a quality audience where we can meet in one place at one time,” he says. “As our company has evolved and grown, so have our exhibits. Our booth size fluctuates year to year based on the products we spotlight and the overall health of the market. We’ll have our entire combined portfolio in a brand new, 40-by-40-foot foot booth, the best yet.” On hand to help demonstrate Amesbury Truth’s key lines of hinged windows, hinged and sliding patio doors and balanced systems for sliding windows, will be Mathieu Hebert, the company’s new national sales director. As executive director of the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Alliance (IGMA), she recognizes the importance to see and be seen at the annual show. “It’s a great opportunity to meet with members and network with other organizations,” she says from her Ottawa headquarters. “The educational component, bringing together a multitude of industry experts to highlight new ideas and technologies providing the latest updates on industry happenings such as codes and standards, is crucial for window and door manufacturers in attendance.” Among the world’s leading organizations concerned with the engineering and manufacturing of insulating glass, IGMA is a long-time supporter of Windoor, exhibiting at the show for the past 20 years. “Both IGMA and CWDMA (now Fenestration Canada) were both managed by the same management firm,” she notes. “This was a good opportunity for IGMA to show support to CWDMA and also connect with our members’ customers.” Creating alliances with other organizations is an IGMA trademark. Its current incarnation as a premier North American trade association representing the insulating glass industry in North America and also in the international marketplace, was created at the turn of this century as a result of the merger between the Insulating Glass Manufacturers Association of Canada (IGMAC) and the Chicago-based Sealed Insulating Glass Manufacturers Association (SIGMA). A not-for-profit organization, IGMA continues to draw on the positive synergies of the former associations and has evolved as one of the top technical authorities across the spectrum of insulat-

ing glass manufacturing. “Our focus is on developing new technologies in the manufacturing of insulating glass units supported by new research, best practices and the development of codes and standards,” explains Webb. “IGMA’s industry publications, education programs, product certification programs and leading edge research provide valuable support to the industry.” Webb lauds IGMA’s track record. “Over the years, we have expanded to include a strong international membership, and that membership keeps growing. We have accomplished much since the merger of IGMAC and SIGMA.” Describing the show as being focused, Webb says, “It may not have the size of the other trade shows but the contacts are better because people come to this show with a purpose in mind, looking to purchase new equipment, find the latest information, gather the publications they need and seek expert advice on standards and codes. They are serious about what’s being offered at Windoor, and come determined to network with as many key industry contacts as possible. They know they can do some real business at Windoor.” Anticipation mounts for this year’s Windoor. Webb has been attending the show for the past 14 years. “This show has been a good one for IGMA,” she says. “It has helped increase our membership each year. Every show brings us one or two new members. Windoor gives us the most concrete results, while offering a most complete fenestration industry package.”

NOVATECH GROUP Among the group of dedicated visionaries who worked long and hard to launch the first Windoor, Raymond Ouellette calls this premier trade show a winner from the start. “Windoor caught on right away. Why? Because there was a need for it,” says the founder of The Novatech Group, producer of custom door glass and steel and fibreglass doors, among other product lines, headquartered in Sainte-Julie, Que. He recalls the decision to create Windoor as an easy one. “Our industry needed a show like Windoor. I was president of CWDMA at the time and Jim Parker was on our board of directors. Jim was the first promoter of the idea of the show and his

suggestion to have such an activity for our industry was unanimously approved by the board.” It would take the founders a further year to prepare and do the complex planning and promotion campaigns. “It had to be done right, as new trade shows are always hard to get started,” Ouellette emphasizes. But with a kick-off attendance of 1,582 and 65 exhibitors at the inaugural event, it even generated a bit of a profit for the association from the get-go. Everyone was pleased by the results, predicting that a good start would lead to a great future.” From a single plant operation in 1982 producing door glass and decorative V-groove glass, to its current ultramodern facilities covering a combined total area of more than 495,000 square feet with a global presence in more than 15 countries, Novatech comprises half a dozen subsidiaries with more than 500 employees. The company also boasts an innovation centre dedicated to the research and development of new products. The company has garnered some prestige awards, including recipient of the Tribute Certificate for business practices abroad awarded by the Association des Manufacturiers et Exportateurs du Quebec and Business Development Canada, as well as the Certificate of Performance (Gold) for its environmentally friendly manufacturing plant awarded by Recyc-Québec. “The management and employees of Novatech believe strongly that environmental and social responsibility and success go hand in hand,” Ouellette points out. Windoor has been a big reason behind his company’s growth, according to Ouellette. “Our first exhibit in 1995 was a 20-by-20 booth, and we continued with that size for several years. But as the show has grown, so have we. Windoor has contributed greatly to Novatech’s expansion by providing us with quality opportunities to strengthen relationships with our Canadian and North American customers. We at Novatech are very proud to have been one of Windoor’s first collaborators at the founding of this great industry gathering 20 years ago. fter what was a very slow start to the season in almost all of the country, business activity has sharply improved and most of us are doing our best to keep up with what can only be construed as a release of pent-up demand. Starting with our annual general meeting held in Winnipeg this year, Fenestration Canada, its board and committees have been diligently preparing for Windoor, education sessions and seminars, website improvement and building code compliance and guideline documents. Here is what the various committees have been up to. Extremely important initiatives on labelling have come to fruition and are available to all window and door fabricators thanks to the hard work of our Fabricator Council. Labelling guideline documents for both single and mulled units are now available for download from fenestrationcanada.ca. These documents are proving to be a tremendous time-saver for fabricator members. A subcommittee lead by Greg Dickie of Atlantic Windows continues to gather information to help navigate through and streamline the window and door testing process. An independent contractor, Morgan Hanam, has been tasked with interviewing test lab and certifying agencies to help clarify interpretation of the North American Fenestration Standard and building code compliance. This initiative should go a long way to assisting fabricators in the testing of their fenestration products as well helping the Council and Fenestration Canada get a better understanding of where to focus their priorities. A new membership advantages brochure has been developed by Marketing and will soon be available for general use. Emphasizing the four key pillars of membership value (networking, resources, education and government relations), this pamphlet should be a valuable recruitment tool and go a long way toward promoting the value of membership in the association. Along with this initiative, website remodeling and restructuring is underway with the emphasis on becoming a more user-friendly information portal. With its mandate firmly entrenched in protecting the interests of fenestration manufacturers, the Technical Committee continues to support codes, regulations and standards activities in Canada, communicating technical issues to membership and other stakeholders. While developing content for technical and informational bulletins, the committee continues to collaborate with partner associations for local and regional input on provincial issues. New chair Rick Pries and the Windoor show committee have done an excellent job of presenting a vibrant program for this year’s show. Look for details on the Fenestration Canada website. The committee has managed to provide a forum for education, new product introduction and networking possibilities for all that is fenestration. Tuesday’s opening night will be capped off by some rousing entertainment by the Blus Brothers. Make sure you are in attendance to help us celebrate our 20th anniversary as Canada’s window and door showcase. The Education Committee broadcast three webinars updating companies dealing with compliance of fenestration products to provincial building codes referencing NAFS-08. Over 600 individuals representing fabricators, builders, specifiers, architects and code officials registered for the three webinars in September, which were offered in both French and English. Fenestration Canada members can now access the recorded webinars and download the presentation slides from the association’s website in the Member Resource Centre using their login information. A big shout out to the Technical Committee and our technical consultant, Jeff Baker of WestLab, for all the help.

ow it can be said: there was skepticism when Fenestration Canada told its membership it was holding its 2014 Annual General Meeting in Winnipeg, Man. – purported home of arctic weather and mosquitoes the size of small birds. At best, there was concern that the event would not see the numbers present at the tremendously successful AGM in St. John’s, N.L., the previous year. But thanks to the tireless efforts of master promoter Al Dueck, of Duxton Windows, Winnipeg went down as an equally great success, attracting record numbers of attendees and putting smiles on everyone’s faces through excellent education sessions, accommodations and entertainment options. Even the weather co-operated.

The four-day event took place June 11 through 14 at the historic Fort Garry hotel in downtown Winnipeg. Organizers reported 185 delegates – about the same as St. John’s, but with fewer companions and therefore more actual business owners. Remarkable in that number was the number of window and door fabricators: 35, including 11 from Manitoba representing around half the total in the province.

The schedule was a little different from past AGMs, in that Fenestration Manitoba held its golf tournament prior to the start of the conference on June 11, in lieu of the usual Saturday Fenestration Canada golf. There was a meeting of the new Fabricators Council on June 12, the first such meeting held at a Fenestration Canada AGM. It was followed by a Fabricators Round Table working lunch where the fabricator-only group was

challenged to come up with questions and challenges about NAFS by the moderator, J.F. Kogosevek. Both meetings saw a lot of spirited discussion around such issues as labelling enforcement and installation practices. Thursday ended with dinner at Fort Gibraltar, a pioneer-era village complete with palisade, blacksmith, log cabins and girls in bonnets. Delegates tried their hands at axe-throwing, with most finding it deceptively difficult. Heather Arntson, attending with Mike Arntson of Cardinal, proved the most dangerous axe-thrower, burying all three of her initial shots. Friday, June 13, saw a jam-packed education schedule. Prominent throughout the day was Murray Frank of Constructive Home Solutions, a B.C. building engineer with extensive experience with that province’s code development process. Frank presented no fewer than four seminars through the day, discussing various elements of window and door construction and installation and how they relate to B.C. codes. Another “B.C.er,” Al Jaugelis of RDH Building Engineering, presented the Technical Committee’s latest draft of labelling guidelines for NAFS compliance. Jeff Baker gave his usual excellent look at codes across the country, with discussion of enforcement in various jurisdictions.

Steve Hopwood joined the conference by phone to present the Energy Star update. And Tom Akerstream of Manitoba Hydro gave a fascinating case study of the engineering behind Manitoba Hydro Place, the utility’s headquarters opened in 2009. It is one of Canada’s only LEED Platinum buildings, and stands many assumptions about energy efficient construction on their heads. All seminar presentations are available to Fenestration Canada members at the Member’s Portal on the Fenestration Canada website. After the Friday seminars, delegates put on some better clothes and gathered at the sponsors’ tabletop displays for drinks and conversation with the various supplier sponsors. Then it was off to the President’s Dinner in the Fort Garry’s elegant Provencher Ballroom. Manitoba lieutenant governor, Phillip Lee, was in attendance along with his aide in full military uniform, adding a touch of pomp and circumstance to the event. After dinner, the location for the 2015 AGM was announced: Vancouver, B.C. Then it was time to present the C.P. Loewen award for lifetime achievement. The award went to Bill Fast, formerly of Willmar Windows. The C.P. Loewen award has special significance in Manitoba, where Cornie Loewen was a personal friend to many in the local

industry. Dueck, who worked for Fast at one time, presented the award. Saturday opened with Rod Smith of the Duha Group explaining how his company – a paint pigment supplier ¬ became a leader in Continuous Improvement and gave delegates some solid advice on how to apply Continuous Improvement strategies in their organizations. He was followed by Wade Miller, president of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who was fresh from his son’s baseball practice. Miller talked leadership and drew from his experiences both as an entrepreneur with Pinnacle Staffing and in taking over a CFL team on very short notice. Miller’s common sense observations and direct style touched a nerve with the attending delegates and some good discussions ensued. General feedback from delegates was excellent, with many reporting new contacts and business opportunities. All in all, it can be said that Winnipeg came as a pleasant surprise. aving just returned from GlassBuild 2014, I couldn’t help but reflect on the contrast to the last Fensterbau show I attended in 2012. Interestingly enough, my flashback on Fensterbau 2012 has nothing to do with the show itself but rather a visit the Porsche AG facility in Stuttgart, Germany. It was here that I took away a very important lesson in window and door fabrication. Personally, I have virtually no interest in sports cars. In fact, what I learned at Porsche had nothing to do with flat-6s or Doppelkupplungs, but rather a wellorchestrated and precise melding of technology and the people that were empowered with it. The logistics and material handing at the facility was nothing short of spectacular. The computer integration manufacturing system (CIM) was remarkable and the enterprise resource planning (ERP) brilliant, but what our tour guide focused on for the majority of the tour was: the people that worked at the facility, the years they spent there developing their craft, the areas of the facility devoted to the employee – for both personal time and professional development, and the input each employee had towards the product they made and the overall culture at the facility. The guide himself was a 50-year veteran of the company. The decision to work at Porsche wasn’t so much about a job, but rather a career – lifelong career often made as a teen and ending in retirement. Much like the contrast observed between these two shows, it can be argued that these same contrasts between Europe and North America exist on shop floors. I am not suggesting that North American companies don’t have long-term and devoted employees. Nor would I suggest we as North American employers don’t treat our employees right. There are hundreds of models within our industry

alone that would strongly suggest otherwise. But the culture of employee engagement just somehow ran deeper at Porsche. Yes, Porsche is a world-class brand and it’s an incredibly sexy car, which is going to give it some advantages when it comes to attracting employee buy-in. But this same culture was also in evidence in the fenestration industry in Siegenia AG in Wilnsdorf, Germany. It was here during a manufacturing plant tour that we came across a group of young workers who looked to be about the same age as my (then) 15-year-old daughter. They were young, incredibly enthusiastic and eager to interact with their North American guests. They were working at different capacities on both new and retired factory equipment. They were not only learning a trade but contributing to the shop floor with basic tooling end electromechanical processes. They were apprenticing in such fields as tool and die and robotics. Having completed their apprenticeship they would most likely go on to work for the company with the ambition to possibly retire there as well. Is this system perfect? Maybe not, but is has allowed the modern German economy to be one of building things rather than an economy narrowed down to just providing services. I’m not about to preach. We here at Euro Vinyl Windows have no apprenticeship program to speak of. Our education system and labour laws make it cumbersome. Nor, at least here in Canada, does the scale of our companies allow for such a system. It was a simple observation and one that not only inspired me but made me want to do better. In the end, that’s the purpose of a trade show: to be inspired, to learn, to want do better. As I continue to visit our industries’ trade shows, often this inspiration comes from beyond the trade show bar code.

enestration Canada has just released two important new documents that potentially affect all manufacturers and prehangers supplying window and door products in Canada. First discussed at the Fenestration Canada AGM and Conference held in Winnipeg in June, both relate to the testing and labelling of windows and doors with mullions. The first document is Voluntary NAFS Labeling Guidelines for Products with Mullions. The second is Recommendation on the Use of Engineering Calculations to determine Design Pressure Ratings of Fenestration Products under NAFS-08.

The need for guidelines was identified by the Fenestration Canada Technical Services Committee following the publication of the original NAFS Labeling Guidelines for Canada, published in November, 2013. A working group that included representatives from Canada and the United States sought to reconcile the intent of NAFS—to label the performance of products with mullions— with the need to report that performance using primary and secondary designators as required by the Canadian Supplement. The working group met by conference call over several months and considered existing mullion labelling practices in the U.S. as well as the needs of manufacturers on both sides of the border, and presented a draft guideline document to the Technical Services Committee in June. Following the Technical Committee’s review, this document has now been approved for publication by the Fenestration Canada board.

WHY GUIDELINES? The NAFS standard is very clear that the performance ratings of products with mullions must be based on the testing of products with mullions. This had not been common practice in Canada prior to NAFS, 24 FENESTRATIONREVIEWFALL2014

and some Canadian manufacturers did not realize that the performance ratings of products with mullions, typically lower than the ratings for individual units or “boxes”, had to be tested and reported on product labels. NAFS-08, the 2008 edition of the NAFS standard referenced in the 2010 National Building Code of Canada, requires product labels to report the performance of products with mullions, but does not provide any guidance on how to do so. The example labels provided only address individual unit products. It provides no terminology for products whose frames are divided by integral mullions, or products combined from individual units whose abutting frames form combination mullions. NAFS, the North American Fenestration Standard, made its first Canadian code appearance in the 2010 National Building Code. Called the Harmonized Standard in the Code, called NAFS-08 in Canada but A440 in much of the U.S., its full name is AAMA/ WDMA/CSA 101/I.S.2/A440-08, NAFS— North American Fenestration Standard/ Specification for windows, doors and skylights. American certification organizations have developed U.S. labelling programs to meet

the need, but they don’t address the Canadian challenge: how to label mulled product performance using primary and secondary designators as required by A440S1-09, the Canadian Supplement to NAFS-08. Both Canadian and American manufacturers were seeking guidance on how to do so. There is one more reason why guidelines were deemed to be necessary. There are three organizations certifying the performance of fenestration products in Canada, and four in the United States. In theory, each of these organizations could develop their own Canadian NAFS labelling guidelines independently of one another, leading to labelling confusion. Fenestration Canada developed these guidelines in the sincere hope they would be adopted by all affected parties to make Canadian NAFS labels more uniform and to ensure they are based on a correct understanding of the acceptable test methods that may be used. member that is bounded at either end or both ends by crossing frame members, such as a “T-bar” mullion in a window system. The integral mullion definition does not address whether the mullion has additional internal or external reinforcement. A combination mullion is defined as the horizontal or vertical member formed by joining two or more individual units together. When an additional reinforcing member is incorporated in a combination mullion, it is called a reinforcing mullion. The distinction between combination and reinforcing mullions is important in the context of the standard used to rate these kinds of mullions: AAMA 450, Voluntary Performance Rating Method for Mulled Fenestration Assemblies. (Then there is the verb, to mull, which describes the action or the result of combining, or mulling two or more individual products together into a combination assembly. A mulled window or door is by definition a combination assembly product.)

TWO TYPES OF MULLIONS, TWO KINDS OF PRODUCTS NAFS defines for us two kinds of mullions, and the mullions in turn define two types of products. Distinguishing between these mullion types is important because they are essential for describing two very different types of fenestration products: • Composite unit — a fenestration product consisting of two or more sashes, leaves, lites, or sliding door panels within a single frame using an integral mullion. • Combination assembly — an assembly formed by a combination of two or more separate fenestration products whose frames are mulled together utilizing a combination mullion or reinforcing mullion Why are these definitions important? Because NAFS has different testing requirements for products with integral and combination/reinforcing mullions, and this leads to different NAFS labels as well. Do these terms sound foreign to you, or familiar? It probably depends where in Canada you live. There are regional variations in how Canadian manufacturers name these mullion and product types. We need get comfortable with the NAFS terminology to discuss the Canadian NAFS labelling requirements for products with mullions.

COMBINATION ASSEMBLY TESTING MADE EASIER Many Canadian manufacturers will be pleased to learn about how various individual product and mullion types can be grouped together to reduce the amount of testing required to qualify products using AAMA 450. This standard requires the air-tightness and water-tightness of combination/ reinforcing mullions to be determined by physical testing. But it allows their structural performance to be determined by calculation or by a simple beam test in addition to NAFS testing of the mulled combination assembly. It also allows grouping of mulled fenestration assemblies to qualify multiple designs with a single evaluation, and can be used to determine NAFS ratings for bay and bow window assemblies. But using AAMA 450 is not a do-it-yourself project: it requires a registered professional engineer to prepare a detailed evaluation report that pulls together test data and engineering calculations to show how NAFS performance ratings for a range of mulled products were arrived at. AAMA 450 evaluation reports can serve as the basis for NAFS labelling of combination assembly products. The Voluntary NAFS Labeling Guidelines for Products with Mullions document has an important annex that concerns the test data that must be recorded to determine Canadian performance ratings. This is of particular importance to U.S. manufacturers and their engineers, as the AAMA 450 document deals with design pressure (DP) ratings only and does not adequately address the need to include mullion performance measures essential for Canadian product labelling, such as air infiltration/exfiltration levels, watertest pressure ratings separate from DP, and Product Class related attributes. American engineers intending to use AAMA 450 for products shipped to Canada are advised to refer to this document understand the differences between Canadian and U.S. NAFS mullion ratings. 26 FENESTRATIONREVIEWFALL2014

ENGINEERING METHODS THAT CAN SUPPLEMENT NAFS TESTING The second document released by Fenestration Canada relates to the use of engineering methods permitted by the NAFS standard to determine the Performance Grades of tested products at sizes other than those tested. By now, most people know that the NAFS standard requires the air-water-structural performance of fenestration products to be determined by physical testing. Many people may not realize that NAFS also provides guidance, by reference to other standards, for the limited application of engineering calculations and principles to determine the design pressure component of fenestration Performance Grades. The Fenestration Canada Technical Committee has issued a document recognizing that “the most recent versions of the standards referenced in NAFS-11 for this purpose define the state-of-the-art with respect to the methods used to determine design pressure ratings for fenestration Performance Grades.” These documents are: AAMA 450-10, Voluntary Performance Rating Method for Mulled Fenestration Assemblies AAMA 2502-07, Comparative Analysis Procedure for Window and Door Products WDMA I.S.11-09, Voluntary Analytical Method for Design Pressure Rating of Fenestration Products Manufacturers and engineers interested to learn more about this subject are advised to consult the Fenestration Canada Technical Services Committee’s Recommendation on the Use of Engineering Calculations to determine Design Pressure Ratings of Fenestration Products under NAFS-08.

rowing up horseback riding in western Canada, I learned about brands at an early age. Ranchers need a brand to differentiate one cow from another. The concept of branding is as simple as that. Standing out from the rest of the cattle for the right reasons. Every business has a brand. Some are better than others. For the most part, your brand identity – which is how your customers view your company – is made up by your reputation. If you tank the price, pay late and have a lot of defects, your brand is cheap and marketing is not going to help. If you compete based on product selection, service or quality, and you can “walk the walk,” then you are half way to success and all your brand needs to do is communicate an honest message about you. Image is everything, but in this market it has to agree with reality. Cell phone companies, airlines, credit cards, TV cable providers and banks are the masters of false branding. They are commoditized services that treat consumers like dirt and then spend millions of dollars every year on feel-good advertising campaigns and event sponsorships trying to offset the stank that is left on consumers each time we have to deal with them. And yet, we keep lining up to take the abuse. The reality is that fenestration is not the telecommunications business and no one has even close to a monopoly so we can’t afford to leave stank on our customers when they deal with us. This is real branding. Say what you do and do what you say. All of our great efforts to build an effective corporate culture and get better at what we do are useless if we don’t communicate them to the market. Creating a logo or slogan is far less time, expense and effort than changing our processes, but can have a much larger impact on the amount of business actually coming into the shop. Logos and slogans are effective tools that marketers can use to influence brand identity and increase awareness through visual recognition. A well-designed logo ties everything together into a larger strategic message. Take Nike. Nike hasn’t manufactured

shoes for years. They contract manufacturing out and work on apparel design and branding. I look at Nike and see overpriced apparel made in sweatshops because I am not Nike’s target market. North American teenagers see it otherwise, because Nike has crafted its brand to appeal to the group that is going to buy new shoes every year. Don’t even get me started about designer purses. It’s all about brand perception. You cannot and should not attempt to please all of the people, all of the time. Brainstorm your brand names. Research the competition and make sure no one is already using any of your favourites. Visit a domain registrar like GoDaddy and confirm website domain availability. Interview three graphic designers, discuss the process and find out who owns the final artwork. Like photographers, some designers legally retain ownership of the logo and are simply licensing the logo to the client. Don’t get caught in that trap. Keep the number of colours for your logo in mind if you want to print on promotional items or apparel. Usually, the more colours a logo has, the more it is to embroider or screen print for golf balls, hats, coffee mugs etc. When the final version is approved, it is always a good idea to create a grayscale version for black-and-white printing and faxing. Keep it simple. Don’t get caught up in paralysis by analysis. Developing a brand can take six weeks, six months or longer. The average window and door company shouldn’t take more than a few months to develop a brand and begin executing a promotional strategy. Sure, there are dozens of long-term decisions that need to be made quickly, but the alternative is to spin your wheels and go nowhere. Do your due diligence and get feedback from outsiders, but within reason. Marketing has to be a collaboration, but business is not a democracy. Killing time waiting for consensus is a big mistake. Creating an average logo or brand name is far less risk than not doing anything at all.
