Today’s surveillance cameras offer greater utility and more features for end users than ever before, but in order to protect these devices, rigorous patching and routine maintenance is a must.
This was one of the major messages conveyed during Axis Communications’ third annual Cybersecurity Summit, which was held recently at its Mississauga, Ont., office.
“If you have a takeaway from today, you should be patching faster,” said Wayne Dorris, cybersecurity program manager, Axis.
Quoting the Device Security Threat Report, published by Palo Alto Networks last year, Dorris noted that the average enterprise network contains 34,000 connected devices. IP cameras represent almost 16 per cent of IoT network devices and are present in the vast majority of organizations.
“The same policies you use for patching IT equipment should also apply to your physical security equipment,” he said.
A major issue facing all network devices is the accelerated pace at which vulnerabilities are being discovered and therefore potentially exploited.
When they were first introduced, IP
video systems were “kind of in their own little corner of the world,” noted Dorris, “but that is changing drastically.”
Shi-lin Chan, chair of Axis’ cybersecurity communications team agreed. “We’re more and more speaking the IT language here,” she said.
Chan said that users must be proactive in maintaining software and equipment for the duration of its lifecycle. Users should prepare for device decommissioning well ahead of time in order to avoid the risk of running an unsupported device or having data remaining after its disposal. “If you continue to run an end-of-life product, that product could have vulnerabilities,” she said.
Axis offers a number of resources to help its ecosystem of users and integrators, including cybersecurity best practices (axis. com/cybersecurity) and an OS hardening guide. The company also runs a “bug bounty” program, offered rewards to ethical hackers in exchange for disclosed vulnerabilities.
In concluding remarks, Jason Chiu, professional services and area technical manager for Axis, noted that “cybersecurity is a shared responsibility among manufacturers, system integrators and customers.”

Construction projects transform dramatically over the course of weeks, months, or even years. While traditional site photos capture individual moments, construction timelapse photography creates a complete visual story of the entire build, documenting every stage from groundbreaking through final completion. More than just engaging videos, timelapse has become a valuable tool for project management, stakeholder communication, and marketing across the construction industry.

Construction timelapse photography uses strategically placed, high-resolution cameras to capture images at scheduled intervals throughout a project. Depending on the scope, cameras may take photos every few minutes during working hours, creating thousands of images automatically compiled into professionally produced videos. Modern cloud-based systems go beyond simple recording, allowing authorized users to view live images, compare progress over time, download high-resolution photos, and share updates with project teams from anywhere. This continuous access provides valuable insight into project status without requiring frequent, timeconsuming site visits.
One of the greatest advantages of construction timelapse photography is its ability to create a permanent visual record of an entire project. Every milestone, from excavation and foundation work to structural framing, exterior finishes, and final occupancy, is documented in chronological order.
This permanent record provides value beyond simple documentation. Teams can verify completed work, review
installation sequences, document milestone achievements, and maintain accurate project archives. If questions arise after completion, historical imagery provides valuable context for project reviews, quality assurance assessments, warranty discussions, and insurance claims investigations.
Construction projects involve multiple teams, tight schedules, and numerous stakeholders. Owners, developers, investors, architects, lenders, and project managers can monitor activity remotely and confirm milestones without physical site visits. Regular visual updates improve transparency, reduce unnecessary disruptions, support more informed decisionmaking, and help identify potential issues early. When everyone has access to current imagery, collaboration becomes easier and progress reporting becomes more efficient and accurate.
Beyond project completion, timelapse videos become compelling marketing assets for websites, social media, proposals, and investor presentations. They visually showcase expertise and capabilities, making them among the most effective pieces of content a construction company can create.
Success requires more than simply installing a camera. Highresolution imagery, weather-resistant equipment, reliable connectivity, and secure cloud storage all play important roles. Professional-grade systems operate reliably throughout projects while consistently capturing sharp, detailed images. Reliable cellular or network connectivity ensures automatic photo uploads, while cloud storage protects valuable data and enables authorized secure access and archiving.
Construction timelapse photography has evolved from a value-added feature to an essential tool for modern project management. As projects become larger, more complex, and increasingly collaborative, visual documentation plays a critical role. By delivering visibility from day one through completion, timelapse helps teams keep stakeholders informed, preserves complete visual histories of every build, and creates compelling marketing content that provides lasting value long after project completion.
