Construction outlooks should have you planning for growth.
Iattended a conference hosted by the Ontario Construction Secretariat recently and received a big download of information about industrial/commercial/institutional (ICI) construction intentions in Ontario and one of their biggest drivers, Toronto’s Metrolinx transit authority. Metrolinx is planning $16 billion of upgrades to that city’s transportation infrastructure over the next decade or so, and Jack Collins, its executive vice-president, gave an overview of the amazing projects in store: light rail lines, overhauls to Union Station, subway extensions and rapid bus routes. You could almost hear the room full of contractors drooling. Seems to me rental operators ought to be drooling, too. The economists who spoke at the conference painted a generally positive picture of ICI construction intentions across the country, pointing to an accelerating economy in the U.S. and a weaker Canadian dollar as good things that will drive investment in commercial space and manufacturing facilities here. A lot of cities are being forced to face the realities that flow from years of insufficient investment in their infrastructure and authorize new construction, whether or not they know how they are going to pay for it. The OCS pegged contractor confidence at 64 per cent, which means most customers of Ontario rental

If shopping is on your mind, you have come to the right place. This issue contains our annual Buyer’s Guide, with a roundup of suppliers offering rental-ready equipment. I think our print Buyer’s Guide still beats the internet in terms of how fast you can flip to a category and see all the main players in that sector, complete with accurate contact information and without having to go down numerous blind alleys. And it works in the back room, even when the computer is all way over there.
I want to thank everyone who came out to celebrate this industry at the Canadian Rental Mart in March. The show was well supported once again, drawing 407 rental operators to visit 91 exhibitors. Numbers were down slightly from our record-breaking 2012 year, which is hardly surprising given the extended winter that has delayed the start of spring landscaping. Our seminars sparked some great discussions, and the CRA Ontario’s banquet a big hit. Our exhibitors did their part to make this show a huge success with exclusive deals you couldn’t find anywhere else. You can read all about our very worth y ROOTY award winner, Special Event Rentals, right here on page 18. We were thrilled to have a winner from Alberta, which is a testament to the national nature of our show. Congratulations to Darren and Neil and the whole crew at Special Event Rentals. Enjoy your celebration party, courtesy of Doosan’s very generous prize.

STRONGCO TO CARRY K-TEC
Strongco Corporation has announced it has entered into an agreement with K-Tec Earthmovers Inc. to be the exclusive dealer for K-Tec’s earthmoving scrapers in Alberta and Ontario.
As part of a long-term partnership, K-Tec are the only scrapers approved, certified and supported by Volvo Construction Equipment that can be attached to both new and used A35 and A40 Articulating Dump Trucks (“ADT”). A Volvo ADT pulling a K-Tec scraper is recognized as an industry advancement, promoting greater versatility and cost efficiencies, and the opportunity to enter into and compete in the scraper marketplace while still using existing fleets.
“We’re pleased to have Strongco join the team
SKYJACK FINDS OLDEST WORKING LIFT
of dealers who support our scraper line,” said Russ Goossen, CEO of K-Tec. “Alberta and Ontario are significant markets, and this new alignment offers an expanded platform to supply our products to these regions, supported by Strongco’s exceptional customer service and in-house product expertise.”
“The addition of K-Tec is consistent with Strongco’s strategy of organic growth through brand expansion and a complement to our existing Volvo product line,” stated Bob Dryburgh, President & CEO of Strongco. “We have demonstrated the product with select customers with extremely positive responses. This new offering allows us to deliver a wider range of options to current clients and creates an opportunity to reach a broader customer base.”
Skyjack didn’t have to go far to find its oldest working scissor lift. The winner of its Quest2013 contest in honour of its 250,000th lift produced was Kraner Electrical, an industrial electrician practically right around the corner from SkyJack’s manufacturing facility in Guelph, Ont. Kraner was presented with its prize, a new SJIII 3219 32-foot scissor lift, at the Rental Show in Orlando, Fla.
Matthew Kraner told the crowd at the award presentation that the first time he ever stepped on a scissor lift, he was terrified. Back then the teenager was tagging along with his father, Peter, as part of Take Your Child to Work Day. “We were working at an auto-stamping place running the electricals and when it was time to come down, the scissor lift I was on wouldn’t budge,” Kraner recalls. “My dad had to come rescue me with the SJ006-10 and little did I think I’d end up working with the scissor lift many years later.
The Kraners are co-owners of Kraner Electrical. They purchased the used SJ006-10 at Bolton Auction House in May 1996, but the machine dates back to 1985.
“Based on our calculation, the SJ006-10, still in use at Kraner Electrical, is the third Skyjack scissor lift ever manufactured,” Brad Boehler, president of Skyjack, said during a special ceremony in February. “The year this scissor lift left the factory, the popular movie Back to the Future was just released!” The 29-year-old scissor lift is generally used for installing conduit or fixtures, running pipes or hooking up equipment for Kraner Electrical customers. “When we are running electricals up near the ceiling we need wide spaces and the Skyjack gives us lots of space while providing a steady platform,” Kraner said. “It’s like a work van up in the sky because it fits all our tools, pipes, fittings and the radio.”
“This scissor lift is a prototype so it’s slower than the newer Skyjack machines we have,” Kraner said. “Everyone laughs at how slow it is because you can walk faster than it but it’s a very effective tool and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. After all, slow and steady wins the race.”
ONTARIO TO MANDATE TRAINING FOR WORKING AT HEIGHT
Ontario is implementing a new workplace training standard to prevent falls and improve safety for workers who work at heights. The standard will initially be voluntary and will apply to workplaces in the construction sector, as well as to construction activity in other workplaces. The standard is expected to become mandatory by the summer of 2014 and will later be expanded to all sectors.
Training programs designed to meet this new standard will improve knowledge about fall hazards and safety practices, including:
• proper inspection of equipment for damage
• procedures for setting up, relocating or removing protective equipment, such as guardrails
• demonstrations and hands-on training on fall-arrest equipment and other devices to keep workers safe
• information on workplace protections and worker’s rights
“At the end of the day, this training standard is about making sure our workers are protected and our businesses are more productive. Protecting those working at heights is the next step in helping develop a workplace culture where safety is the centre of the workplace, and ensures workers and employers have the tools and knowledge to stay safe and go home to their families at the end of their shift,” said Yasir Naqvi, Minister of Labour.
ALLEN TURNS 50
Allen Engineering Corporation celebrated its 50th birthday in February. Founded in 1964 by Dewayne and Mary Ann Allen, AEC has become a worldwide leader in the concrete industry – doing business with over 60 countries internationally. Based out of Paragould, Ark., Allen sells equipment for every phase of construction from compaction equipment to a laser-guided screed.
Allen Engineering began in 1964 when Dewayne Allen and a friend started a Redi-Mix Concrete company in Piggott, Ark. The transition from RediMix to concrete equipment began in 1969 when a pour in Paragould was in need of truss screed. Dewayne was one of the pioneers of truss screeds and it became what Allen was known for in the late 1970s. In the 1980s, AEC began designing, engineering, and manufacturing riding trowels for the concrete market. In the past 20 years, Allen has added a host of new products including hydraulic
AGREEMENT ON TELEMATICS DATA
A global contingent of heavy equipment manufacturers, fleet managers and two leading industry associations have agreed on a defined set of asset data that, when communicated remotely via telematics, can be sent to the equipment user. The Association of Equipment Manufacturers and the Association of Equipment Management Professionals have announced that 19 data points will be part of a standard being developed and maintained by the two associations and their memberships. In addition, the new standard defines a format that enables OEMs to deliver fault code information as part of the data feed. The original telematics data standard developed by AEMP will incorporate this new, wider industry standard. Telematics data related to crane operations are excluded from the agreement and possibly other niche products. Data will be provided to the end user via an Application Program Interface (API) server to server data sharing standard. The data-sharing standard will include standardized server-to-server communication protocols for the transfer of telematics information in mixed equipment fleets to end user business enterprise systems. These protocols will allow end-users to employ their own business software to collect and analyze asset data from mixed equipment fleets without the need for customization work across multiple telematics provider applications. A developer group will work together on industry-wide integration of the standard, future versions and introduction dates. Another task force will be brought together to set the data transfer/conversion security plans and a governance group will also be assembled.
riding trowels, bridge deck finishers, and power buggies.
In the 50 years since he started the business, Dewayne is impressed with how the industry has changed, “We’ve seen the concrete pouring business go from a non-professional approach in the 1960s to where it’s very much professional with high standards in quality and flatness today,” he said. “It’s been a very nice journey to see all of this.”
Allen Engineering has become one of the worldwide leaders in the designing, engineering, and manufacturing of concrete equipment. With new products coming out every year, the sky is the limit for Allen, but Dewayne wants to reach far beyond that, “What will concrete look like when we go to the moon or Mars? It’s going to happen someday.”
AEC introduced 19 new models of concrete and related equipment at the World of Concrete, the Rental Show, and ConExpo/ConAgg in the first quarter of 2014.
PACIFIC HEAVY EQUIPMENT SHOW TO COHABITATE
The Pacific Heavy Equipment Show, previously held in Chilliwack, B.C., will co-locate with Truxpo 2014, taking place September 19 and 20 at Tradex in Abbotsford, B.C. Truxpo 2014 will encompass the entire Tradex complex plus 80,000 square feet of outdoor exhibits, while PHES will be an outdoor and tented event encompassing an additional three acres of static and demo exhibits in the Tradex north parking lot.
Truxpo, Western Canada’s largest trucking and logistics show, is off to a strong start with 70 per cent of available booth space sold after the booth space lottery. “We are very pleased with the 2014 booth space lottery, with all the major players back and some exciting additions to the exhibitor list,” said Mark Cusack, national show manager, “With such a strong start, we are optimistic we will sell out by April for the 2014 edition.”
The Pacific Heavy Equipment Show will be the venue for equipment owners, operators and purchasers representing general construction, trucking, public works, utilities, aggregates production, road building and maintenance from across western Canada to see, demo and purchase equipment and services.
“We are excited about co-locating these two industry events in one large venue. It is a well-known fact that the heavy equipment and trucking industries have a great deal to do with one another. Whether you are talking about a small vocational operation or large forestry contractor, you will find trucks, trailers and heavy equipment. This is exactly what we will deliver in September,” said Cusack, “The crossover in audience and exhibitors is the recipe to make this show a huge success.”
RE-BRANDED VOLVO RENTS
Volvo Rents has announced the rollout of a new name and corporate identity, BlueLine Rental. The new brand comes following the company’s recent transition to new ownership. Platinum Equity, a Los Angelesbased operations-focused private equity firm, acquired the business from Volvo at the end of January.
“The launch of our new identity represents an exciting milestone for the company,” said Scott Hall, president of BlueLine Rental. “With Platinum Equity’s support, we have new opportunities to grow and build on the fundamentals that have made us so successful – our commitment to service and the way we treat our valued customers and employees.”
BlueLine Rental serves a diverse customer base across multiple industries, including construction, oil and gas, industrial manufacturing, infrastructure, power, and metals and minerals.
“We have worked closely with the management team to ensure a seamless transition and we are excited to help the business achieve new levels of success,” said Louis Samson, the partner at Platinum Equity Partner who led the transaction team. “We are excited about BlueLine’s prospects and are committed to helping it thrive as an independent company with a new identity.”
In addition to BlueLine Rental’s expanding line of Volvo compact equipment – such as backhoe and skid steer loaders, compact wheel loaders, compact excavators and compaction equipment – the rental centers carry a comprehensive line of essential equipment and tools for the construction, commercial, industrial and homeowner markets. The company focuses on daily, weekly and monthly rentals.
Hall added that business has continued as usual as the transition to new ownership has unfolded. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to the 5 R’s that have made us successful: Resource, Recognition, Responsiveness, Respect and Reinforcement,” said Hall.

INDUSTRY EVENT
A WEALTH OF OPPORTUNITY
by PATRICK FLANNERY
Store owners from all over Ontario arrived with a buying focus. While the show recorded a slight drop in numbers (407 attendees representing 167 rental stores) from the 2012 show’s record levels, many exhibitors commented on the high quality of the traffic and the high interest in buying versus kicking tires. The expanded education sessions were well received, with those attending saying those who didn’t had missed out. The CRA Ontario banquet was tremendously entertaining, with the Loonie Auction bringing in $1,200 for the association and a lot of laughs and cheers.
A highlight of the first day of the Rental Mart was the presentation of the ROOTY award to Special Event Rentals of Edmonton, Alta., making the ROOTY a truly national award. Darren Kershaw, a partner in the company, made the trip to accept the award and a really big cheque on the booth of sponsor Doosan Portable Power. “This award represents industry recognition of the hard work we have done for years,” Kershaw said as he accepted. “There are times in business when you don’t know how things are going to turn out, but now we are here and this award says we have done well.” You can read the full story of the 2014 ROOTY winner on page 18.
Notable on the show floor was A.E. Sales adding yet more products, including an eye-catching Cormidi man-lift capable of negative elevation to position workers under bridges without blocking the road beneath. The machine

was already sold to Ottawa Rentals, who had also bought a Winlet glass lifter. Apparently, Ottawa Rentals is building a specialty machine division to rent unusual equipment for niche applications.
Many Rental Mart attendees seemed extremely enthusiastic to play a putting game located at one of the booths. It may have had something to do with the host of the putting game, who was possibly not one of the exhibitor’s regular employees. For those of you who may have missed it, the name of the exhibitor was Tsurumi and they sell pumps. We didn’t catch the name of the putting game host, but we’re pretty sure we’d recognize her if we saw her again.
John Brooks Construction Equipment was at the Rental Mart, showing off the new
logo for the first time at that show since the name change from Uniquip. National sales manager Dave Latour reported good traffic and quality discussions.
Neil Courneya of Hy-Cor must have carried some of the mojo from being a seminar presenter onto the show floor. “We have had one of our best shows ever,” Courneya said. “We’ve been writing orders all day.” Hy-Cor sells safety and power distribution equipment, and Courneya presented a seminar on how to add distribution equipment to generator rentals the morning before the show opened.
The other seminars were equally interesting and informative. Lee Doutre of Wacker Neuson gave an in-depth and authoritative look at generator sizing from the perspective of his 38 years in the business. Canadian Rental Service columnist Mark Borkowski collected cards after his talk on how to value your rental business.
“I wish I’d known you five years ago,” commented Neil De Jong of ITE Rentals in Hamilton, Ont. Rental operators were puzzled when told that Monica Dubbin of Vermeer would present on vacuum excavating, but those who attended her talk were intrigued by the technology and ideas for possible applications flew around the room. HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL
Look for new opportunities as the weather warms up.
by MARC MANDIN
For most of us the melting snow signals an increase in business around the corner as homeowners start looking about their yards for projects in the great outdoors once again. Spring is in the air and we can hardly wait to start writing those lawn and garden rental contracts. At the offices of your rental association it means it is time to start planning for the approaching Rental Awareness Month. In 2013, the CRA tried some new ideas to promote Rental Week during May and these proved so successful that this year we will be dedicating the entire month of May as Rental Awareness Month across the country. If you are planning a promotion at your store, have an anniversary coming up or are just thinking of trying something new, now is the time to forward your information to Chris at High Impact, our PR firm, so they can work with you and try to get some press time for your project. Easiest way to get things rolling is to contact CRA managing director, Nathalie McGregor, at 1-204-223-0992. Each promo will add to the momentum and get our buying public thinking rental and that is a win for us all. For those of you in the party and event business this should be easier than for the tool guys who would rather turbo charge their ride-on mowers than plan an event. So to them I say: organize a turbocharged mower race or similar event at your local ball diamond to spark interest in your rental business. Let your imagination guide you toward a novel event you can put together to get customers interested in your store during the month of May.
Events are something we all like to take part in but we are often wary about organizing events on our own. Your local association may fall into this category now and then as well, so if you have an idea you think would draw a crowd please share it with someone from your CRA local to help bring it to life. Would you not be more likely to attend the next meeting or event if it was focused on one of your ideas? I will really push my luck and assume that while I have you in a participating mood you may consider bringing a friend or employee to your next local’s function. Not all employees will be interested but for those who are it is a great way to get them engaged in your business, help them feel they are making a contribution, and sharing something that interests you, their mentor. Not all businesses have the extra manpower to man the fort while you and an employee are attending a function, but if you have that luxury you will benefit by getting your staff involved.
By now you should have had the opportunity to attend one of the regional trade shows in order to check out your suppliers’ latest innovations. If not, you will have to do some research online, in your trade magazines, or ask more questions next time your favorite sales rep stops by if you want to stay on top of the changes happening in the industry. While Tier 4 remains around the corner for many of us, some manufacturers have changed their production lines to Tier 4 Final engines only. You will need to know what this means for your business. Some issues with these new engines such as the urea supply can offer a business opportunity if you look at it that way. Why wait for the warning lights? Sell your customer a supply so he does not have to worry about running out at the wrong time. Imagine the opportunity with a sixmonth rental for that generator!
Before closing off I would like to take the opportunity to introduce your 2014 board of directors. Your executive consists of chairman of the board, Jeff Campbell; president, Marc Mandin, vice-president, Dave Mintenko; Region 10 director, Paul Kenyon; then, moving west to east, B. C. director Angie Venekamp; Alberta director Tim Ranson ; Saskatchewan director Jill Holtsman, Manitoba director Louise Serpa; Ontario director James Morden; Quebec director Paul Ravary; Atlantic director Hank McGinnis; supplier director Dean Nasato and insurance director Justin Friesen CRS

Know your customer
by Deryk Coward
When is a company not a company? When it’s a person.
When renting equipment, it is crucial that you be aware of the correct person or legal entity that will be responsible for paying the account with you. If your company is renting the goods to the wrong legal entity, it may be unable to recover payment later. Should a problem arise, you will need to know with whom you are dealing and against whom your legal actions can be taken. In contract law, there is a doctrine called privity of contract. Distilled to its essence, it means that only the person or legal entity with whom you are dealing is legally responsible under the contract. Generally speaking, if you enter into a rental contract with one person, you cannot recover against a different person or entity. This is ever more critical when you are dealing with companies and other types of organizations.
One of the main reasons people carry on business as corporations relates to liability issues - they will not be held personally liable with respect to the transactions taken by the corporation. When a business is incorporated, it is considered a person at law. It can enter into contracts on its own accord; it can sue and be sued. With certain limited exceptions, this means that the property of a corporation is its own property. If you are contracting with a corporation, you must be aware of the fact that the individuals with whom you are dealing will not be responsible to pay your accounts if something goes awry.
My experience in the rental industry, however, has taught me that many “companies” are really not companies after all. If a company is not incorporated this means that it is not a separate legal entity and you are actually dealing with an individual proprietor. In order to find out if the company you are dealing
with is incorporated, you can turn to your Provincial Corporations Branch or contact a lawyer in your jurisdiction to assist you. Every province maintains a database of companies in its jurisdiction and keeps records of many important pieces of information, such as whether a company is in good standing, who is behind the company, and the registered office address.
Other organizations vary in structure, such as associations, charitable organizations and not-for-profit organizations. Some of these types of organizations can be extremely difficult to recover against, so before you enter into a contract with them you would be best advised to do your due diligence as to their legal identity and ability to pay.
When doing business with someone it is always good practice to identify who exactly you are carrying on business with. That way, you can assess your risks better and know how much credit to extend. For example, if you knew that you were renting to a corporation that did not have assets, you would want to consider insisting upon a written personal guarantee of indebtedness from the owners of the corporation as a condition of doing business.
Unless you know exactly who you are dealing with, you will be unable to properly assess the business risks you are undertaking in renting your property to them and extending them credit. Your lawyer in your jurisdiction can be very helpful to you in terms of determining the identity and legal status of your clients. It is usually a simple set of searches that can be done the same day of your request, and shouldn’t cost much money. It may prove to be the best money you spend, if it means your finding out that you shouldn’t be renting to a certain client. CRS
TAKING FLIGHT
Special Event Rentals achieves national prominence.
Darren Kershaw is a bubbling pot of ideas. One wonders how he ever sat still long enough to pilot an aircraft in his days as a pilot for the former Canadian Airlines. Then again, maybe all that time looking out into the bright blue sky gave him an opportunity for deep thinking.
by PATRICK FLANNERY
Kershaw says Special Event Rentals was one of the first to introduce clearspan tents to the Alberta market. Clearspan allows event planners to create dramatic indoor environments because they do not require internal roof supports.
In any event, one gets the sense speaking to Kershaw that he has thought hard about every aspect of Special Event Rentals, the four-location Alberta party rental chain he co-owns with Neil Goodkey. The company has an amazing track record of trying new things and going in creative directions. Lately, all that energy has paid off with impressive growth, and national recognition with Canadian Rental Service’s ROOTY award.
Kershaw joined the company in 2003 and the influx of energy was like a wire touching a battery. Goodkey provided the established brand and rental industry know-how; Kershaw brought the adventurous spirit and creativity. In the 12 years since he became involved, Special Event Rentals has gone from 60 employees with in a 40,000-square-foot warehouse in Edmonton to four locations across Alberta (Calgary, Banff and Red Deer in addition to Edmonton) with 220 employees and 100,000
square feet of warehouse space. Kershaw estimates the company has averaged 20-30 per cent revenue growth per year since then, and now buys $1 million of new inventory each year to rent or sell. Kershaw acknowledges that a strong synergy of talents on the executive team has driven their success. Min Wang, vice-president of administration, is structured and detail-oriented and watches every nickel. Thomas Pollard, the vice-president of operations, delights in finding solutions in shipping, logistics, purchasing and IT that others miss. Goodkey is methodical and careful, bringing his years of experience to bear before deciding on any course of action.
Goodkey started Special Event Rentals in his garage in Edmonton 27 years ago with a single popcorn machine. He followed demand into the pipe-and-drape business, providing display services to area trade shows and festivals. Marketing consisted of a Yellow Pages ad.
the
After five years he was able to move into his own location on 99th Street, where the Edmonton headquarters is still. In 1991, Goodkey showed his willingness to try new things by opening a retail division to the business called Edmonton Wedding and Party Centre. Here, brides could buy a wide selection of needed items for weddings, then go next door to rent larger ticket items. Kershaw says the retail operation has been more important as a driver for the rental business than as a source of revenue for the company, but does run in the black and has now stood as an Edmonton institution for 23 years. Event retail is a tough business, Kershaw says. “The retail sector has got a huge squeeze from online companies that have the 80,000-square-foot warehouse and you order from them and they ship it,” he explains. “Why get out of your bed?”
An experiment with event planning was also launched in 1997, and a planner remains on staff at the Edmonton office, but Kershaw says Special Event Rentals has stayed away from that business in its other locations. This might seem like a strange choice given the surge in interest in creative weddings and other events, but Kershaw says staying away from planning makes good business sense for Special Event Rentals. Combining planning and event supplies is “a dying model,” he says. “We have slowly gotten rid of all our in-house wedding planners because you want the wedding planners that are out there to bring their custom-
ers to you. You want to service the wedding planner market because that is a big return client while the wedding couple themselves are a one-time source of revenue. If you service the wedding planners and event planners themselves, they will come to you every month, every week.” This kind of careful thinking about opportunity and direction seems to characterize everything Kershaw does.
Kershaw’s involvement with Special Event Rentals started after his previous career as an airline pilot came to an end. Kershaw flew for the now-defunct Canadian Airlines, and saw his seniority vanish when that carrier went out of business and he was forced to take a job with Air Canada. He had always had an entrepreneurial streak and started to look around for opportunities to go out on his own. He had read about the high rate of business failures, but also read that that rate falls dramatically when the new business is formed as part of a partnership or alliance with an established partner. So when his opening came in the form of the bankruptcy of Calgary’s Fiesta Party Rentals, Kershaw didn’t act on his own but approached Goodkey. “When I look back now, we always laugh,” Kershaw says. “He just thought he saw something and thought he believed in me. So we started.”
Innovating and looking for new opportunities is the strategy that fuels Special Event Rentals. The company was one of the first to build and rent luxury washroom trailers in Alberta. The

simple idea of putting portable toilets on flatbed trailers so they can be easily hauled to remote jobsites then returned has proved so popular that equipment and event rental companies across the country are adding them to their fleets in droves. Many companies put their own spin on the product, adding gen-
erators, light towers or other kinds of equipment, and Special Event Rentals is no different. It now carries luxury washroom trailers with granite counters, air conditioning, a sound system, TV, woodgrain floor, touchless faucets and well sinks. Kershaw and Goodkey have gone a step farther and are developing a

“Green Room” trailer for movie sets with all the amenities of the luxury trailer, with office space, a lounge and showers added.
Special Event Rentals also broke new ground in being the first to offer clearspan tents in Alberta. Manufactured by Special Event Sales (the company’s resale division), the clearspan truss system is capable of supporting very large structures with no internal support beams. As demand for larger and larger temporary shelters grows, and corporate events in Alberta get bigger and bigger, Special Event Rentals has been able to keep up with customer demands with this high-end product.
Innovation doesn’t stop with Special Event Rentals’ rental products. Kershaw thinks hard about how the business is run, and embraces new technology to improve logistics wherever he finds it. Led by Pollard, the company has integrated its functions to a high degree using Point-Of-Rental software for fleet tracking and inventory management. It is a matter of small savings in time and money adding up to big advantages. Kershaw uses the example of order changes. Many event customers place orders well in advance, say a month, then come in with last minute changes right before the order ships. Before integrating the shipping and order systems electronically, those changes might have been missed because the order came in after the back room had already prepared it for shipping. Now, an automated alert prevents anything from leaving when a change has been made to the order.
This past March, at the Canadian Rental Mart, Special Event Rentals got some payback for its years of growth and hard work with a national award. Beating out other nominees from across the country in a judged competition, Kershaw was presented with the ROOTY award on the show floor along with a $1,000 gift certificate from the sponsor, Doosan, to help celebrate the win.
Darren Kershaw bought into Special Event Rentals in 2003 by opening a Calgary location. Kershaw is a former Canadian Airlines pilot who went looking for other opportunities when that carrier went out of business.

KEEP ON GRINDING
Stump grinders are safer with regular maintenance.
by STEPHEN KINGSLEY, market manager for Paladin Attachments
These attachments are most commonly used for landscaping construction and stump removal applications. The attachment is robust enough to handle tough, dirty jobs – and that kind of work can create problems for the machine if it is not properly maintained.
First and foremost, keep safety in mind when performing any type of maintenance on the attachment. Make sure the stump grinder is lowered to the ground and the parking brake is set. Make absolutely certain that the hydraulic circuit is in the off position, turn off
Astump grinder can be a powerful attachment tool when mounted on a skid steer loader, but only when it is kept in peak running condition. The stump grinder is a simple cutting device with a round, steel wheel with perforations holding a set of carbide cutters around the circumference of the wheel.
the skid-steer engine and remove the key. If the stump grinder must remain in the raised position during maintenance, block the unit securely to prevent accidental release of the lifting mechanism. Finally, disconnect the hydraulic couplers as a backup safety measure.
PROPER LUBRICATION
All maintenance begins with proper lubrication. Each moving part should be lubricated using a quality lubricant. “We recommend the use of SAE MultiPurpose Lubricant or equivalent SAE
Multi-Purpose type grease,” says Dave Aldrich, product support and training representative for Paladin Attachments, manufacturer of the Bradco Stump Grinder attachment. “Neglecting proper lubrication can lead to reduced efficiency, increased wear, early breakdown, and the needless replacement of parts.”
All parts with grease fittings should be lubricated on a daily basis or every eight hours of operation, whichever comes first. Be sure to clean the grease fittings before using the grease gun so as not to inject dirt into the system. After greas-

ing, wipe off any excess grease from the grease fittings. Dirt can collect on exposed excess grease, causing increased wear. If a grease fitting is missing, replace it immediately.
The gearbox is critical to attachment longevity. The oil level in the gearbox should be checked at least once a week. This is a simple, but very important step. “For example,” states Aldrich, “on a Bradco Stump Grinder, this check can be performed by removing the access cover from the front of the frame and then removing the pipe plug from the end of the gearbox. The lubricant should be at the same level as the plug. If the lubricant level is low, fill it with 80-90 weight gear lubricant. Do not overfill. Too much lubricant might rupture the gearbox seals.”
MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS
Regular maintenance is the key to long life and safe operation. Most manufacturers have reduced maintenance requirements on the stump grinder to a minimum, but it is very important that they be performed correctly and in a timely manner.
Before using the stump grinder each day, routinely look it over. Run your hand over the entire machine to make sure nothing is loose or broken. Make sure nothing that should be sharp is dull, and nothing that should be dull is sharp. If hydraulic fluid is leaking from a hose connection, tighten it or replace it. If a bearing needs greasing, grease it. If the bearings are over-greased, wipe them off.
Check the brazed joints of the cutter head to make sure all the cutters are bolted on and meet the torque specs of the manufacturer. Make sure the cutters aren’t folded down or broken off. This check should be performed at least once a day; twice a day if possible.
Hydraulic safety should be a key point in any maintenance program. A garden hose flows at approximately five to 10 gallons per minute. In comparison, the stump grinder has a flow rate of up to 40 gallons per minute in high-flow units. That immense amount of pressure builds up in the hose and, if the hose breaks or is cut, it can be a life-threatening issue. The hydraulic fluid can escape the hose with enough pressure to lacerate the skin or sever an appendage.
MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST
The following items should be checked on a daily basis:
• Skid-steer loader hydraulic oil level
• Gearbox castle nut - Make sure it is torqued to a mini-

mum-250/maximum-350 foot pounds. (Every nut and bolt has an SAE torque rating. If under-torqued, the nut can become loose. If over-torqued, the pressure exerted can begin to pull down on and distort the threads on the nut and bolt, causing the nut to loosen.)
• Teeth hardware mounting - torque to a minimum-150/ maximum-180 foot pounds
• All other hardware tight and in good repair
• No leaks in hydraulic system
• Gearbox power shaft free of foreign material around the shaft. (Any foreign material around the shaft can become an abrasive, which can amplify the wear of seals and shafts.)
• No damage to teeth - replace if necessary. (If the teeth are broken off or folded over, the performance of the stump grinder diminishes greatly, requiring the use of more time and more fuel to perform the task.)
• All safety guards and devices are installed correctly. (Without safety guards in place, the operator and those standing nearby are at risk of being hit by flying debris.)
• No missing or illegible safety/warning decals. (There may be three different warning emblems on the attachment. One indicates the potential to hurt someone; a second indicates the potential for catastrophic injury; and the third indicates the potential to kill.)
The operator’s manual is your best source of information for maintaining your stump grinder attachment, but common sense plays an important role as well. If something doesn’t look right or sound right, check it. It just makes good sense.

EAST TO WEST
The CRA Prairie and Atlantic shows deliver great value.
The Atlantic division of the Canadian Rental Association has once again demonstrated good old-fashioned eastern hospitality at their recently completed trade show.
by ED COSMAN and PATRICK FLANNERY
The event took place February 28th and March 1st at the Moncton Casino and Hotel.
This facility is a new location for the annual event is much improved over the previous location with high ceilings, excellent lighting and very good PA system. The show now had actual booth spaces instead of simply table top displays and exhibitors were able to bring
rental equipment for display on the show floor. Additionally, attendees that wanted to make a voluntary donation back to the local government needed to simply walk a few hundred steps to the brand new 24,000 square foot Las Vegas style casino.
Over 150 rental professionals were in attendance over the two days including more that

60 rental store owners and employees. The event started with the annual banquet and Chinese auction on Friday evening with almost 100 people in attendance. Saturday featured a breakfast, the annual general meeting followed by the trade show.
At the AGM Marc Mandin, national president for the Association, gave a presentation and spoke about the 5-year strategic plan that the CRA is working towards. He also mentioned that May will be rental awareness month and gave a recap of some of the many benefits that are available to CRA members.
Representatives from Western Financial gave a report on the self protected insurance program and reminded those in attendance that they are now able to offer many other programs including low-cost group benefits and even pet insurance. New managing director Nathalie McGregor shared some thoughts and thanked Dale and Sara Pardy for all their work in organizing this Atlantic event.
The new Atlantic board was introduced:
President - Dale Pardy
Secretary - Nancy Crosby
Director - Hank McInnis
Treasurer - Sara Pardy
Vice-president - Murray Salter
Supplier director - Chris MacIntosh
The trade show itself was quite busy with many exhibitors reporting brisk buying. The Rentquip Canada booth with Shawn Parks and his team featured its popular Milwaukee “Spin to Win” wheel where rental operators that made a purchase could spin a roulette type wheel and win a prize. Mark Peart from GC Duke also reported having a great show as he sold all of his equipment that he brought to display. Pat Parker-Patterson from Eastcan Marketing was also quite busy talking about the product lines that she represents. The 50/50 draw with the winners portion of over $230 was won by Dan McIntosh who immediately

The event wrapped up by at 4:00 with plans already being started for next year’s show.
PRAIRIE SHOW
The Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta CRA local once again teamed up to host the Prairie show in Saskatoon, Sask., on March 14 and 15. It was managing director Nathalie McGregor’s first Prairie show and Saksatchewan national director, Jill Holtsman, was impressed with her organizational skills. “Everything went so well at registration,” Holtsman said. “You can really tell Nathalie knows what she’s doing. She is great with the suppliers.”
The Prairie show brought in 258 attendees.
Judging from the red eyes rolling into the Rental Mart setup day on the Monday after the show, the social action at Prairie was its usual lively self. Hub City Display contributed photo booths and dress-up clothes for both the Friday social and the Saturday banquet. If the CRA Facebook page is any indication, the booths were used to good effect. The banquet drew 200 diners who were entertained by psychic Ross Johnson from Chicago. By all

accounts, Johnson was amazing. “It was the best entertainment we have ever had,” Holtsman exclaims. “You couldn’t hear a pin drop anywhere in that room.”
Some serious business got done at the banquet, with the local award winners being announced. Wayne Weight won the Doug Mitchell Prairie Supplier of the Year award, and Wayne Beckett was introduced as the Saskatchewan Rental Person of the Year. The Friday night 50/50 draw and silent auction brought in $1,800 each for the Doug Mitchell Supplier Scholarship Fund and the Dorothy Wellnitz Scholarship.
Ken Johnson of the Rent It Store was the lucky winner of 1,000 “showbucks.” This innovative program awards an attendee with a voucher that can be redeemed for $1,000 off any purchase at any of the show sponsors’ booths. Event organizers set the big cheque up for everyone to see at the Friday social, creating a nice buzz ahead of the announcement of the winner.

This high performance series of compactors distinguishes themselves every day. Easy handling. Universal application. High maneuverability. Thanks to infinitely variable hydraulic forward and reverse action, this machine moves quickly on the job, even uphill.
Ideal for rental operators, the compact and foldable engine cover makes servicing easy and provides excellent protection, too. Although the AVP 5920, 4920 and 3920 stand head-and-shoulders above the competition, the price is reassuringly down-to-earth. For sales and service contact your local Ammann dealer.
At just 381 pounds (173kg), the new 74 hp H50 is so light and compact, it sits on top of its class in the water-cooled world. But it’s no lightweight when it comes to power. This 4-cylinder, turbocharged 2-liter engine is the first industrial diesel to have a Bosch Off-Highway common rail fuel injection system for unbelievable power and fuel efficiency. And it falls below the emissions limits without the use of a particulate filter. So don’t let your equipment be waterlogged with a heavy hunk when things can go swimmingly with the all-new water-cooled H50.
