From 2019-2023, 690 dead whales were stranded on the West Coast. A 40% decline in population for the Pacific Grey Whale. In the ocean, a whalefall presents an oasis of nutrients and habitat, hosting its own biodiverse ecosystem of octopi, hagfish, bone-eating worms, starfish, and more. But what does it mean when a whale instead dies on land? This project binds together the land and the sea, exploring the cyclical dichtomies of decomposition and ecological succession amidst climate change.
SYCAMORE TRAIL
Cunningham Engineering partnered with multiple community organizations and non-profits to plant almost a 100 fruit trees in West Sac, addressing neighborhood food insecurity. Using AutoCAD and LandFX, I was responsible for complete construction documents including plant selection, planting plans, irrigation plans, and details. It was constructed by volunteers in late October.

BRIDGING THE GAP

The UC Davis Arboretum requested a master plan. This project focuses on cultural placemaking and critical regionalism. Studies of Patwin basketry yielded a design which bridges the gap between the land acknowledgment and its design, while opening up opportunities for recreation and protecting scenic viewsheds.
