As autumn begins to settle across the islands, we look forward to another exciting season at An Lanntair. September and October are always among our busiest months, bringing together music, literature, visual arts, film and community participation in a programme that reflects the creativity and spirit of the Outer Hebrides. Alongside an outstanding line-up of performances, we are delighted to present Cearns, a powerful new exhibition by Deljeem Rai, exploring identity, belonging and the importance of community through the artist's own journey to the Outer Hebrides. It is a timely reminder that the arts continue to connect people, inspire conversation and enrich our island communities. This autumn also marks the launch of Aonadh – Hebridean Songwriters Festival, an exciting new addition to our programme. Bringing together emerging and established artists from across the Outer Hebrides, Scotland and beyond, the festival will feature concerts, workshops, collaborations and conversations while creating new opportunities for local musicians to develop their craft and perform alongside some of the country's finest songwriting talent. The festival has been made possible through support from the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar Creative and Cultural Industries Fund. Earlier this year, An Lanntair lost long-standing core funding that supported both the organisation and many of our accessible community programmes. While project funding can never replace sustained core investment, it has enabled us to respond positively by creating new opportunities that invest directly in our local creative community and strengthen the future of original music in the islands. One aspect of the festival I am particularly looking forward to is its exploration of the connection between songwriting, storytelling and positive mental health. Music helps us express emotions, reflect on our experiences and connect with others. Through performances, workshops and artist conversations, we hope to encourage discussion about creativity, wellbeing and the positive role songwriting can play for musicians and the wider community alike. Alongside this, our Creative Ageing programme continues to gather momentum. Working with partners across the Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland, we are developing an ambitious programme that uses creativity to reduce isolation, improve wellbeing and celebrate the enormous contribution older people make to island life. We look forward to sharing more as this exciting partnership develops. There is plenty more to enjoy throughout the season. We are delighted to welcome Charlie McKerron & Friends, Scott C. Park, following the release of his new album Revival, and the return of the outstanding Dallahan. Looking ahead, preparations are also well underway for Faclan – The Hebridean Book Festival, returning over the Halloween weekend with another inspiring celebration of literature, ideas and conversation.

There is also an exciting new chapter beginning in our Café Bar. We are delighted to welcome our new Café & Bar Manager, Jim Stewart, whose passion for great food and warm hospitality is already shaping the visitor experience. Guests can look forward to a refreshed menu featuring delicious home baking, freshly prepared dishes and enhanced table service, while favourites such as our much-loved homemade soup will remain firmly on the menu. It's an exciting time for the Café Bar and for An Lanntair, and we look forward to welcoming you through our doors this autumn.

The ability to rise above and plough through, no matter what. This is what is reflected in women’s Gaelic song through the ages. It’s not all love-songs, laments and lullabies, and women certainly didn’t just keep quiet when they had something to say, even if it got them into trouble.

Join us for an evening exploring the role of women in Gaelic songwriting using spoken word and music. Mikeysline is a mental health and suicide prevention charity based in the Scottish Highlands. Founded in late 2015 after a tragic series of young suicides, it offers confidential peer support, text lines, and face-to-face services under its core message: “It’s OK not to be OK.”

Creative Balance aims to generate evidence-based recommendations that will transform how Scotland’s creative sector supports the mental health and wellbeing of racialised creative communities. FREE

CHAPTER 20: CIANALAS - NOSTALGIA 29 – 31 DÀMHAIR 29 – 31 OCTOBER Faclan began in 2006, and this will be its twentieth edition. The first five were held in late August until it migrated from summer to Samhain in 2011, when the nights draw in and the clocks go back. For that reason, there is a sense of perspective and a strain of nostalgia running through this year’s programme. Of longing and belonging. Of life in the rear-view mirror albeit with an eye on the road ahead. Times past are vividly and movingly evoked - in fact and in fiction – through three events that transport us to Uist and Barra in 1978 - World Cup Year - to Lemreway in South Lochs in the 50s, and wider Lewis from the late 60s to the present day. Accounts that scratch deep beneath the local historical record.‌ Further back still, we enter the global phenomenon that is ‌O utlander‌. An inside account from Gillebrìde Macmillan, originally cast as a bard in the show, and who subsequently worked as the Gaelic consultant on the series, singer and songwriter, eventually having a special part written for him. In advance, to offset this version of Scotland, whether as an introduction or a corrective, you decide, we will also be screening Peter Watkins astonishing 1963 film ‌C ulloden‌. The last battle on British soil and arguably the defining event in modern Highland history.‌ Christmas comes early with the ‌H ebridean Baker‌ launching his new festive cookbook. But we are back on schedule later that evening with a live music presentation of the silent classic ‌T he Phantom of the Opera‌ for Halloween.‌ Other events include film, ‌a Saturday morning breakfast event‌ and an acclaimed and utterly spellbinding evocation of Louisiana in the 1920s.‌ 2026 is also the 25th anniversary of the ‌I sland Books Trust‌, who along with Acair are a pillar of publishing in the Islands. Congratulations and Happy Birthday!‌ They have joined with us and the Library to create a new and exciting fringe programme. All of which will be revealed in the forthcoming Faclan brochure.

Piano Club will take place once a month, with a special guest joining each session. They’ll help host the evening, perform, and share their own experience and relationship with the piano.

In Aug, An Lanntair formed our new YOUTH DANCE COMPANY in partnership with YDance. The company aims to develop a dancers technical, creative and performance skills alongside transferable life skills. It will provide an accessible, brave and fun space to develop and expand skills to support them on their journey in dance.

THURS 15 – SAT 17 OCT, 10AM – 4PM Education Room & Load-in bay, An Lanntair Get creative with concrete in this hands-on workshop with Robbie Thompson that explores how to design and build fun, functional sculptures to be installed on our forecourt. We’ll fabricate moulds using carpentry skills and work as a team to pour large scale works that can be used as street furniture, as well as interacted with through built in speakers and integrated lighting. The sessions will experiment with materials such as jesmonite and snowcrete and we’ll discover the work of artists such as Racheal Whiteread, Henry Moore and Eduardo Paolozzi.

This project is part of ART GARDEN. Look out for details of other woodwork, metalwork and casting workshops which young people can get involved with this Winter. Together, they will help to create an inspiring and welcoming space in the square outside An Lanntair. The project is funded by Youth Local Action Group (YLAG), part of Community Led Local Development funded by the Scottish Government.

Uprooted from his home, community and wider family in Nepal as a teenager, and transplanted halfway across the world, it was not until Deljeem found himself in the Cearns, a small housing estate in Stornoway, that he rediscovered the sense of community and belonging. Where, they were welcomed and where members supported and looked out for one another.

A lot has changed, but small links remain. How we farm and socialise as a community is increasingly changing. Today, even with technology, we seem to be actively trying to reconnect with each other on a fundamental level, holding on to old traditions because they give us a sense of identity and continuity.

Scottish Islands still hold a sense of community, which is evident today and is often seen through how we work the land. Inspired by Uist Films' recovered films FAODAIL and Dùthchas, Yasmin has combined old film still images with her modern life photos. A blending of past and present through painting that aims to inspire a deeper appreciation of our shared history and ongoing cultural 30 journey.

“I work from photos and sketches done in the local environment. I am interested in capturing structure and volume and creating a strong sense of form in the finished piece. My mixed media work includes the use of collage, acrylic, inks, digital, oil pastels… and occasionally whatever else is to hand.” Lynne describes her work as “a contemporary take on traditional island landmarks and landscape art.”
