Hello! My name is Nicole, and I’m honored to be serving as Chair of the Ankeny Young Professionals this year. Looking back on my time with AYP, I’m incredibly grateful for the relationships, opportunities, and experiences that have helped shape both my personal and professional growth.
When I first joined AYP, I was looking for a way to connect with other young professionals and expand my network. What I found was so much more. AYP is more than a networking group, it’s a community of people who genuinely support one another and want to see each other succeed.
One of the things that makes AYP special is the variety of opportunities available to members. Whether you’re looking to develop leadership skills, give back to the community, grow your professional network, or simply meet new people, there’s a place for you here. Every event offers a chance to learn, connect, and make an impact.
Some of my favorite moments have come from meeting new members, collaborating with others on the leadership committee, and watching individuals step into leadership roles with confidence. One of my favorite things we did this year was sponsoring a member in AYP to go through ALI (The Ankeny Leadership Institute).
As we continue to grow, our leadership committee remains focused on creating meaningful experiences and opportunities for connection. We’re excited to bring fresh ideas, engaging events, and new ways for members to get involved throughout the year.
One event we’re especially looking forward to is the Ankeny Chamber SummerFest’s AYP Family Fun Night on Friday July 10th in Uptown.
It’s a great opportunity to bring together members, families, and the community. Events like these remind us that strong communities are built through connection and involvement.

The Dangerous Identity Shift Facing Emerging Leaders

In my 22 years of working with emerging leaders, I have witnessed a familiar transformation. A talented professional is dependable, kind, helpful, and deeply trusted by their team. Then they are promoted, their title changes, and sometimes, so does their behavior. They adopt what I call the cock-a-doodle-do leadership style.
Suddenly, they become harder to approach, too busy to connect, and visibly postured with their feathers fluffed. Their tone, presence, and ability to listen change entirely. The same person who once built trust through humility and reliability begins trying to "perform" authority to prove they belong in charge, often acting like they know much more than they actually do to maintain that image.
In plain language, a little authority can blind you to how your behavior impacts your team.
The impact is immediate and destructive. SHRM reports that 84% of U.S. workers say poorly trained managers directly create widespread, completely unnecessary work and stress. When an untrained leader struts rather than supports, communication breaks down, collaboration stalls, and productivity plummets under the weight of daily anxiety.
Now, this does not happen to every new leader. But when it does, it is usually rooted in a lack of preparation.

Organizations promote strong performers and assume technical excellence automatically translates into people leadership. Without proper development, emerging leaders experience an identity crisis. Left without a roadmap, they confuse leadership with status.
The rooster analogy matters because the visual is hard to miss. Roosters are known for posturing, crowing, guarding territory, and asserting dominance in the flock. In leadership, that same energy shows up as dictation, micromanagement, and defensiveness. A title can make someone taller on the organizational chart, but a leader who focuses on flaunting their status ultimately shrinks their ability to empathize with their team.
Research supports this concern. Adam Galinsky’s studies on power and perspective-taking found that a high-power mindset makes people more self-oriented and less accurate at reading the emotions of others.
The solution requires self-awareness, humility, and intentional development. Emerging leaders, do not wait for a solution to land on your desk. Create a clear plan: ask your organization for formal training or a leadership coach, look into outsourced leadership programs, and find a trusted mentor to serve as a sounding board. Most importantly, build a habit of asking your team for regular feedback to ensure you stay accessible.
Leading with true confidence means staying approachable and listening to your team. The very behaviors that got you the job are the exact same behaviors you need to exhibit to keep it.
Promotion shouldn't cost your team their trust or their empathy. If you want to ensure your emerging leaders step into their new titles with grounded confidence instead of fluffed feathers, let’s chat about tailored leadership development and coaching programs for your organization.
So, don’t be a cock-a-doodle-do leader, be the teammate you’ve always been, just with a new title.

Can you share a bit about your professional journey and what led you to get involved with Ankeny Young Professionals?
My professional journey has been defined by a passion for growth and strategy. Currently, I work in software sales and business development, a role that requires a high level of problem solving and relationship building. Being in a sales-driven career, I have always understood that connectivity and networking are crucial to success. You quickly learn that your network is your greatest asset, and when I first arrived in Ankeny, I knew I needed to build one from the ground up.
That professional need for connectivity is exactly what led me to Ankeny Young Professionals. I realized very quickly that I did not want to just watch the city grow from the sidelines; I wanted to be a part of the engine driving it forward. I remember walking into my very first AYP event and feeling that familiar ping of social anxiety, wondering if I would have anyone to talk to. But because I value networking as a core part of my professional life, I pushed through it. Within five minutes, I was greeted by several different people who went out of their way to make me feel welcome. That experience confirmed that AYP and the Ankeny Chamber was the collection of future leaders I wanted to be around, and joining was the best decision I could have made to anchor myself in this community. You and your husband are launching new a business here this summer. Why was Ankeny the right choice?
We believe in this community and we want to see it thrive. This summer, my husband and I are preparing to open Ankeny Radon Pro. While he handles the essential technical operations, I will be utilizing my background
in sales and business development behind the scenes to help us grow.
We chose radon mitigation because it is more than just home maintenance; it is about home safety. Iowa has some of the highest radon levels in the country, and we wanted to provide a service that gives our neighbors peace of mind. For us, success isn’t just about business growth, but about knowing we are helping families in Ankeny live in healthier environments. By launching Ankeny Radon Pro here, we are making a long-term commitment to the city’s health and success. How has being involved in the community helped with your professional and personal growth?
Professionally, AYP has been a masterclass in leadership. Whether it is organizing a large-scale community project or leading a committee, I have learned how to manage diverse perspectives and drive toward a common goal. These skills are invaluable as I manage software accounts and simultaneously build the infrastructure for our new family business.
Personally, it has given me a profound sense of place. In a fast-growing city, it is easy to feel like just another face in the crowd, but community involvement turns a place where you work into a place where you belong. It has introduced me to some amazing friends and most trusted mentors. How do you balance personal, professional, and community commitments?
I have learned that balance is often a moving target, so I prefer the term integration. There are seasons where my professional life requires 100% of my focus, especially now with a business launch on the horizon, and other seasons where the community needs more of my time.
The key for me has been intentionality. I treat my AYP commitments with the same level of respect as a client meeting. I also make it a point to protect my personal time to ensure I do not burn out. Whether it is a quiet evening on the trails or dinner at a favorite local spot, I make sure to recharge.
You are currently the Vice Chair of Ankeny Young Professionals. What does that involvement mean to you?
Stepping into the Vice Chair role for 2026 is both a responsibility and a privilege. To me, this role is about stewardship. I am standing on the shoulders of the leaders who built AYP into the powerhouse it is today, and my goal is to ensure we continue to provide a platform that is inclusive and high-value for our members.
It means I get to be a voice for the next generation of Ankeny’s workforce. I want to make sure every young professional, from the entrepreneur to the corporate climber, knows they have a seat at the table here and a community that supports their ambitions.
How do you feel about being named the 2025 Ankeny Young Professional of the Year?
I am still incredibly humbled. To be recognized by your peers, the people you admire and work alongside every day, is the highest honor I could ask for. More than anything, this award represents the power of the connections I have built here. It is a reflection of the friends who encouraged me to step into leadership and the mentors who have guided me along the way. I am especially grateful for the mentorship of Laura Murphy; having someone of her caliber to look up to and learn from has been instrumental in my growth. This honor serves as a reminder that when you invest your heart in Ankeny, the community has a wonderful way of pouring that energy right back into you. It has definitely motivated me to work even harder in my 2026 Vice Chair role to live up to that title.
What excites you most about the future of Ankeny?
The momentum here is electric. What excites me most is not just the physical expansion or the new developments and businesses, but the civic energy. We are seeing a shift where young professionals are not just
living here; they are actively shaping the city’s identity. We are becoming a hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and family life simultaneously. I am excited to see Ankeny become the premier destination in the Midwest for young talent, and I am thrilled that my husband and I get to contribute to the local business landscape.
What would you say to other young professionals who are considering getting more involved in AYP or the community?
Do not wait until you feel established enough to join. I often hear people say they will get involved once they are further along in their career, but the truth is that getting involved is how you get further along.
My advice is to start small. Come to a Lunch and Learn or a social hour. Showing up is 90% of the battle. Once you experience the support system that is AYP and the Ankeny Chamber, you will realize how much faster you can grow when you are surrounded by people who want to see you succeed.
On a personal level, what do you enjoy most about living and working in Ankeny?
I love the small-town heart with big-city amenities. I can have an excellent meal at The District and then listen to live music at the park five minutes later. There is a sense of pride here that is infectious. Whether I am at the grocery store or a Chamber event, I am constantly running into people I know. That connectivity makes life feel much more rich and meaningful. It is a city that truly roots for your success.
Any additional insight or advice you would like to share?
If there is one thing I have learned, it is that you get out what you put in. The community will not change your life if you stay on the sidelines. Take the risk, ask the question, and offer your time. Ankeny is a city that rewards initiative.

Dr. Isaiah Petersen, a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa (Exercise Science, 2018) and Palmer College of Chiropractic (2023), opened Feel Good Chiropractic & Wellness in Ankeny in the fall of 2024 and recently started Wellness & Safe Water Iowa. He specializes in personalized, patient-centered care for a variety of neuromusculoskeletal conditions. An avid golfer himself, Isaiah is also a Titleist Performance Institute Certified Professional. Utilizing traditional chiropractic techniques alongside state-of-the-art laser therapy, he aims to provide expertise, a calming presence, and evidence-based treatments to help his patients get back to doing what they love to do, faster.
What excites you most about being a part of Ankeny Young Professionals?
I made the easy decision to join AYP after my first few experiences with the Ankeny Chamber of Commerce. Seeing how well-run and impactful the Chamber was, I knew that AYP would be equally successful. AYP, as the name suggests, has the added benefit of attracting a younger crowd, with many attendees in similar stages of their careers. What were your goals, either personally or professionally, when joining AYP?
I don’t view AYP as a way to generate business or find new leads. Of course, I’d love to help anyone who needs it, but I’m there to make genuine connections. Whether it’s a golfing buddy, someone I might trust with finances down the road, a lender, a future business partner, a great referral for someone else, or just a friend... who knows? That’s what makes it exciting!
See, I grew up in northwest Iowa. There’s a larger population within a half-mile of my office than there is in the entire county I spent 18 years in. Both sides of my family go back multiple generations in that area. Even now, a decade later, give me a few hours and I could still name all 33 people in my graduating class—plus who missed valedictorian by a mere 15 spots. I know that’s not especially unique among Iowans, but I mention it to drive home the point that community is something I was born into. My wife comes from a similar background, and as we work to establish new roots in Ankeny, we’ve had to be more intentional than ever. AYP has been a huge blessing in that regard. What is one thing you look forward to each month when attending an AYP event, & why?
I think the feeling of truly being part of— and taking ownership in—a community, whether that’s a city, church, workplace, team, organization, or any other group with a shared goal, is one of those things that, once you experience it, life feels a little more gray without it.
What piece of advice would you give to someone looking to join AYP?
So here’s my advice to any current or prospective AYP members: show up, be human, meet people, and enjoy your time. It’s not a test or a box to check—it’s a chance to hang out with and be part of the next generation of business leaders in the topranked place to live in Iowa and the 18th-best place to live in the entire United States.

My name is Heather Phillips, and I am a Senior Branch Partner with Indoff, Inc. I sell office furniture to more than 7,000 customers within my self-managed book of business. I have been selling furniture and helping businesses across the U.S. create efficient workspaces since 2014. I specialize in commercial interiors, office moves, and customized office furniture solutions for a variety of industries. I am based in Ankeny, Iowa, where I have lived for 27 years. With Indoff’s nationwide network and access to more than 400 manufacturers, I am able to deliver tailored solutions for businesses while still providing a personal touch.
I am passionate about giving back and staying active with Ankeny Young Professionals and other local organizations. My volunteer work includes assisting with Ankeny Wonderlights, helping paint and revive an Uptown Ankeny mural, packing meals at Meals from the Heartland, face painting and painting donation items for Easter Seals, and fundraising for several local nonprofits during my time as President of the International Facility Management Association. I was honored to receive the IFMA Central Iowa Chapter’s Volunteer of the Year Award in 2021.
I live in Ankeny with my husband, John. We have been together for 10 years and married for 3. We share our home with our dogs, Gracie and Hazel, and are excitedly expecting our first baby in June. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Business, and I am an active member and ambassador of the Ankeny Chamber of Commerce. I have already had an amazing experience and a great return on my Chamber and AYP investments, and I cannot wait to see what is in store for 2026.
What excites you most about being a part of Ankeny Young Professionals?
What excites me most about being part of Ankeny Young Professionals is the opportunity to meet new, like-minded people who care about what they do and about our community. I am a very social person and love getting involved in events and helping with projects
that truly make a difference in Ankeny. AYP has been a fun and welcoming group where I have been able to build real connections, give back to the community, and be part of what is helping our city continue to grow.
What were your goals, either personally or professionally, when joining AYP?
When I joined AYP, I was looking to put myself out there more and get involved in the community. I wanted to meet people outside of my usual work circle, make new friends, and learn more about what was happening around Ankeny. The people I have met through AYP bring new energy and excitement to my professional life. I have built connections naturally, made new friends, and found meaningful ways to give back while being part of something bigger than my day-to-day work of selling office furniture.
What is one thing you look forward to each month when attending an AYP event, & why?
One thing I look forward to each month is seeing familiar faces and catching up while also meeting new people. I have a mindset that every person I have not met yet is a potential new friend. Each event feels relaxed and fun, and it is a great break from the normal routine. Most of my coworkers are not based in Iowa, so it is especially nice to connect with other local professionals. You never know what kind of connection or opportunity might come from simply showing up and being part of the group.
What piece of advice would you give to someone looking to join AYP?
My advice would be to dive in and get involved. Do not be afraid to introduce yourself, attend events, and volunteer. AYP is all about building connections and giving back to the community. The more you put into it, the more you get out of it. It is a great way to meet people, learn new things, and make a real impact in Ankeny. If you see me at an event, please do not hesitate to come say hello.

Ellie Molly Welcome! SUMMER INTERNS
Hello! My name is Ellie Albert, and I am going into my third year at the University of Iowa, majoring in Journalism and Mass Communications with a minor in Business Administration. My professional interests lie in public relations, communications, and marketing. I grew up in Ankeny and love being a part of such a friendly and growing community. I chose this path because I believe a strong foundation in writing, paired with a business background, is essential for success in PR-related work. This summer, I am excited to be joining the Ankeny Chamber of Commerce, where I will be working on external marketing efforts for SummerFest and other Chamber events.
On campus, I am involved in my sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, where I serve as the Content Assistant and create content for our TikTok account. I enjoy showcasing my creativity and dedication to the chapter through our social media presence. I am also currently a seasonal keyholder at Plato’s Closet, a secondhand retail store in Ankeny. I have been with Plato’s since May of 2023, an experience that has taught me customer service skills, how to delegate daily tasks to staff, and how to stay composed during high-volume event days. These skills will be directly transferable to this internship, where I will assist in the planning and execution of the three-day music and food festival — Ankeny Chamber SummerFest!
My coursework has provided me with valuable knowledge in visual communication and design, multimedia storytelling, and reporting and writing – skills I hope to carry into my future career. Ultimately, I hope to become a communications or marketing specialist within a company in the fashion or beauty industry. I am confident that my dedication to academics, along with my friendly and personable nature, will set me up for success.
Throughout this internship, I am very excited to learn about each of the Chamber members and what it looks like for businesses to collaborate. I hope to meet new people and network with local businesses that I might consider working for after I graduate. I am particularly eager to develop my skills in event communications and learn how a Chamber strategically positions itself to support local economic growth. I can’t wait to get started!
Hi! My name is Molly Noelck, and I graduated from Johnston High School. I am currently attending Iowa State University, where I am majoring in Event Management and minoring in Communications. I chose Iowa State because I grew up attending sporting events there with my family, and over the years I developed a strong connection to the university, its traditions, and the sense of community it provides. Being on campus always felt exciting and welcoming, and those experiences played a big role in making my decision to attend Iowa State. From the moment I officially toured campus as a prospective student, it truly felt like home, and I knew it was the right place for me to continue my education and pursue my career goals.
During my time at Iowa State, I have enjoyed getting involved, meeting new people, and expanding my knowledge of the event industry. My coursework and experiences have continued to strengthen my interest in event planning and management while helping me develop important communication, organization, and leadership skills that I know will benefit me in my future career.
During the school year, I intern for the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) as a Sports
Administrative Assistant. The ICCAC manages junior college athletics throughout Iowa and neighboring states while promoting student-athlete success, fair play, and academic achievement across Division I and Division II programs. In my role, I assist with administrative operations, event preparation, communication, and organizational tasks that help support conference activities and events. This experience has allowed me to strengthen my communication, leadership, organization, and time-management skills while working in a fastpaced environment. It has also given me valuable insight into the amount of planning and coordination required to successfully manage athletic events and operations behind the scenes.
I hope to build a career in event management, ideally within the sports industry, as I have always had a strong passion for sports and the environment surrounding them. I would love the opportunity to combine that passion with my future career, whether working for an athletic department, sports organization, or another area within the sports industry. However, I am also open to exploring other opportunities within the events industry. One of the things I enjoy most about event management is the variety of career paths and opportunities available, as no two events or experiences are exactly the same. I am excited to gain hands-on experience working with events and to learn more about the operations and behind-the-scenes work that go into organizing an event as large as Ankeny Chamber SummerFest. I look forward to developing my skills, learning from professionals in the industry, and contributing wherever I can. I’m excited to get started!
My name is Madilyn Tow, and I am excited to be joining the Ankeny Chamber of Commerce as an event intern this summer. I am a Des Moines native born and raised, and I will be starting my senior year at Iowa State University this coming fall.

I am currently studying Communications Studies with a minor in Event Management. Through my coursework, I have developed a strong interest in how communication, planning, organization, and community engagement all work together to create successful events and meaningful experiences.
I have especially enjoyed learning about the behind the scenes work that goes into events, including coordination, budgeting, promotion, vendor communication, risk management, and creating positive experiences for attendees. I am interested in event management because it combines creativity, organization, problem-solving, and people skills, which are all areas I hope to continue to strengthening throughout my career.
In addition to my education, I have gained valuable work experience in fast paced, customer focused environments. I have worked in the coffee and food industry, including roles at Scooter’s Coffee, Caribou Coffee, and Starbucks. At caribou, I worked as a shift manager, where I gained leadership experience, handled daily operations, supported team members, managed customer service situations, and helped keep the store running efficiently. These roles taught me the importance of clear communication, adaptability, professionalism, and staying calm under pressure. I have also volunteered with high school choral and theatre events, where I helped escort judges and groups, and assist with event stations.
My long-term career goal is to work with a nonprofit or sustainability-focused organization where I can support events and communications in a way that benefits the community. I am passionate about work that feels purposeful, and I hope to use my communication and event management skills to help organizations connect with people, share their mission, and create positive change.
My academic background has helped me build a strong foundation in interpersonal communication, organizational communication, public relations, and event planning.
During my internship with the Ankeny Chamber of Commerce, I hope to learn more about community based events, local business engagement, and the planning process that supports successful Chamber programs. I am excited to gain hands on experience, learn from professionals in the field, and contribute to projects that support the Ankeny community. I am so grateful for this opportunity and look forward to being part of the team this summer!
