Meaning of the Flag- Folding Program
The flag-folding ceremony represents the same principles on which our great country was originally founded.
The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life.
The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.
The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks, and who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.
The fourth fold represents our weaker nature; as American citizens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace, as well as in times of war, for His divine guidance.
The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong.”
The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
The seventh fold is a tribute to our armed forces, for it is through the armed forces that we protect our country and our flag against all enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.
The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor our mother, for whom it flies on Mother’s Day.
The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood, for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great have been molded.
The 10th fold is a tribute to father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since he or she was first born.
The 11th fold, in the eyes of Hebrew citizens, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
The 12th fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Ghost.

Mary Ellen (nee Knoll) Winter of Langford, NY passed October 30, 2015 at age 60. Beloved wife of David C. “Squirrel” Winter; loving mother of David P. (Sheryl) Winter and Sheri Winter; grandmother of Levi, Josiah and Nathan; daughter of the late Floyd J. and Irene Knoll; sister of Gary (Denise) Knoll and the late Floyd S. Knoll, Judith Trembath; sister inlaw of Joy Knoll and George Trembath. Mary Ellen was a Valentine’s baby born in Springville, NY. She grew up in East Eden NY attending St. Mary’s in East Eden until 8th grade. She was a graduate of Eden Central School.
Mary Ellen had a great love for horses as a teenager. In 1975 she married David C. Winter and resided in Langford, NY. Mary Ellen was a past president of the Langford- New Oregon Vol. Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She was one of the largest exhibitors of commercial vegetables for over 20 years at the Erie County Fair.

She placed well with many blue ribbons as well as grand champion and reserve grand champion for the vegetables that were grown on the family farm in Orchard Park, NY. Mary Ellen was a large vendor at many local farmers markets including Hamburg and East Aurora among others with a large selection of many varieties. She was very proud of the of the products she showed and sold with the help of her husband Dave, son Dave, his wife Sheryl, and her daughter Sheri. Her hobbies include horseback riding, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, wine tasting, cards, bowling, lunch with friends, and the Erie County Fair. She loved being in charge of the family farms largest Easter egg hunt on the Family’s 65 acre farm in Orchard Park for her 3 grandsons Levi, Josiah, Nathan, many nieces, neph-
ews, relatives and friends. She will be sadly missed by many.

Eden Schools Support Breast Cancer Awareness
The faculty, staff and students of the Eden School District supported Breast Cancer Awareness Month by joining forces to “Kiss Cancer Goodbye” with a week of special activities. These included “Real Men Wear Pink Day”, the opportunity to purchase Kiss Cancer Goodbye lips in honor or someone touched by this disease, and Dress Down Days. This effort also received tremendous support from the sports teams during the week with each team collecting donations and selling breast cancer awareness items. Through the efforts of everyone, $2,068 was raised to support cancer research. These funds will be allocated to help support a mobile mammogram, Hope for Two, providing support for women who receive a cancer diagnosis while pregnant, and the NYSUT (New York State United Teachers) sponsored breast cancer walk.

Eden Gymnasium Sports New Backboards
The Main Street School gymnasium is sporting new backboards this fall thanks to a grant they received from the Eden Community Foundation and matching funds. As the weather changes, this gym becomes a busy site for basketball, both for school classes and after-school programs of the Boys and Girls Club.
