Smart ways to finance holiday
when the holidays fuel increased spending on everything from dining and entertainment to gadgets to toys. It can be easy to get swept along during the season of spending and fail to pay attention to budgets when the urge to splurge on loved ones sets in. However, failure to take inventory of where money is going can leave individuals facing some unwanted financial repercussions come the new year.
Spending beyond their means is something many holiday shoppers fall victim to. Perhaps they didn't accurately budget for the year, or surprise purchases crop up, pulling resources away from holiday allowances. That's when credit cards can become so attractive, and potentially dangerous.
A 2014 survey from Accenture, a leading global professional services company, found that most people make a budget for holiday gift buying, but nearly half exceed their budgets anyway. Buying with credit cards makes overspending easy. Consumers who want to avoid holiday debt can take a proactive approach and explore some other financing options this holiday season.
Various retailers have reinstituted layaway policies to make it easier for shoppers to buy holiday gifts. With layaway, instead of paying for an item all at once and leaving with it the same day, shoppers pay a percentage of the cost of the item. In the meantime, it is held in layaway. Once an item has been paid for in full, the merchandise is free to leave the store. Spacing out payments can help shoppers avoid overspending, and many stores do not charge interest fees on layaway
Holiday clubs
Financial institutions may offer savings clubs that can help people save for holiday spending over several months. The "club" is simply a special short-term savings account set up to encourage holiday saving. Many such accounts can be opened with a nominal deposit. At the end of the term, the money can be withdrawn and used for holiday purchases. Shoppers likely won't miss the small amount of money being set aside each paycheck, but are surprised to see just how quickly savings can add up.
While some banks still offer Christmas club accounts, which reached the height of their popularity in the 1970s, today they are most commonly offered by credit unions. According to the Credit Union National Association, or CUNA, nearly 72 percent of credit unions run Christmas clubs, and consumer interest in these clubs is holding steady.
Credit card perks
Smarter credit card usage during the year can be handy come the holidays. Choose cards that will yield cash back or other perks, such as discounts at certain retailers. Also, be sure to pay the balances off in full when the bills arrive, so as not to rack up high interest charges throughout the year. Use the cashback rewards you accumulate during the year as a holiday spending allowance.
Holiday shoppers can implement a few saving and spending strategies to avoid going into debt this holiday season.
Last minute holiday shopping tips
find gifts for everyone on their shopping list, many people will still find themselves putting holiday shopping off until the last minute.
In certain ways, last-minute holiday shopping is easier than ever.
Thanks to online retailers who can ship products overnight, men and women who delay their holiday shopping have more options at their disposal than they did before the arrival of the Internet. And unlike the days of yore when the best deals were largely exclusive to Black Friday, some shoppers find that competition between online retailers and traditional brick-andmortar stores is so great that deals can be found regardless of when they begin shopping. But while waiting until the last minute to begin holiday shopping may not be as risky as it used to be, shoppers may still benefit by sticking to certain strategies so they can find the perfect gifts without breaking the bank.
· Stay within your budget. Even last-minute shoppers have holiday shopping budgets. But it can be harder for last-minute shoppers to stick to their budgets because they have less time to comparison shop and hunt for deals. As the holiday shopping season winds down, resist the temptation to go
over budget. If a gift you had in mind is available but more than you can spend, look for something else. Overspending on holiday shopping in December is a recipe for debt in January, and no shopper wants to begin the new year weighed down by consumer debt.
· Shop local. National chains and big box retailers are renowned for rolling out great deals during the holiday season, but such stores may have very limited or unimpressive inventory left by the time lastminute shoppers begin shopping. Local retailers are often incapable of slashing prices as significantly as their larger competitors, and that may mean they have more extensive inventories available throughout the holiday shopping season. In addition, shoppers who stick with local retailers won't have to pay shipping costs to ensure items arrive on time.
· Shop during off-peak hours. Shopping during off-peak hours can help last-minute shoppers make efficient use of the limited
time they have to buy gifts for their loved ones. Visit stores early in the morning or late at night, or schedule a midweek afternoon shopping trip so you aren't spending what little time you have left waiting on lines or hunting for parking.
· Give something less traditional. Holiday gifts need not come from stores. Rather than spending their time shopping for gifts for loved ones who seemingly have it all, last-minute shoppers can give the gift of a donation in their loved one's name. Last-minute shoppers who want to give something more tangible can create a homemade gift that's both unique and heartfelt. If your DIY skills are lacking, give a loved one the gift of a night out on the town at your expense.
Shoppers who wait until the end of the holiday shopping season to begin their searches for holiday gifts can still find great gifts without going broke.
The benefits to buying local this holiday season
Holiday shopping dominates many people’s free time between the day after Thanksgiving and the final days before Christmas. While many people may shop ‘til they drop on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, those days still account for a relatively small amount of the hundreds of billions of dollars that are spent each holiday season.
Shoppers now have a bevy of options at their disposal as they embark on holiday shopping season. Traditional in-store retailers are still around, and online shopping continues to grow in popularity with each holiday season. But many holiday shoppers are looking to buy local this holiday season, and such a decision can pay a host of dividends for both shoppers and the communities they call home.
· Buying local benefits your local economy. Studies from Civic Economics, an economics and strategics planning firm, found that independent, locally-owned retailers return a far greater percentage of their revenue into their local economies than national chain stores. One such study examined the disparity between revenue recirculation among independent, locally-owned businesses in Raleigh, North Carolina, versus four major national chains in the city. The former recirculated 51.1 percent of revenue into the local economy, while the latter recirculated less than 14 percent. Similar results were discovered in many cities, indicating that buying local not only benefits local business owners, but also the communities those owners and their customers call home.
· Buying local creates jobs in your community. One of the biggest ways local business owners in
Raleigh recirculated their revenue in the local economy was job creation. While national chains also create jobs, such jobs only benefit your community if the chains are located within your community. If your local mall is a considerable drive away, chances are the chains within that mall are not employing many of your fellow community members. Local businesses in your community are more likely to employ residents of your town.
· Shopping local may provide access to more unique gifts. In addition to the economic benefits of buying local, shoppers may find merchandise made by local craftsmen is more unique than mass-produced items found on the shelves of national retailers. Recipients may cherish more unique items that they cannot find on their own, and that appreciation may even spur them to visit more local retailers after the holiday season has come and gone, benefiting their own communities in so doing.
· Local business may provide a more personal touch. Buying from national chains has its advantages, but customer service is not always one of them. Should your loved ones encounter problems with their gift that requires assistance, they might be forced to wait on the phone for extended periods of time as they and thousands of others wait for customer service representatives to answer their calls. Local businesses do not deal with nearly the volume of customers as national retailers and, therefore, are capable of addressing concerns more quickly and personally than large chains.
Buying local not only benefits small business owners, but it also pays dividends for their customers and the communities they call home.

The history of holiday lights
Holiday celebrants employ holiday lights in various ways. Certain individuals may be content to hang lights on their Christmas trees and call their decorating complete. Others may get their holiday jollies by making sure each square inch of their home is covered in twinkling lights. Still, other people prefer the more subdued effect of lights framing one picture window of the house.
The tradition of Christmas lights stretches back to early modern Germany when people used candles to decorate Christmas trees in Christian homes. Those candles were harbingers of what would come when electric lights replaced gas and other open flame illuminating devices that were commonplace prior to the 20th century.
Thomas Edison, the inventor of the first successful practical light bulb, also created the first strand of electric lights that would be used in holiday decorating. By 1880, Edison had standard incandescent light bulbs well sorted out and desired a way to better advertise his invention, so he decided to make the most of the holiday season and put his light bulbs on display. According to a 2003 article in American Heritage magazine titled "The Wizard of Your Christmas Tree," Edison strung incandescent bulbs all around the compound of his Menlo Park, NJ, laboratory. Edison constructed an eight-mile underground wiring system in order to power this grand light display. Because the laboratory
was situated along the railroad that passed between Manhattan and Philadelphia, thousands of people were able to see the display.
The concept of electric holiday lights took a bit of time to catch on. Edison's friend and associate Edward Johnson was tasked with stringing together colored lights in 1882 and placing them on an evergreen tree. Johnson handwired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs. In 1895, President Grover Cleveland requested the White House family Christmas tree be illuminated by multi-colored electric light bulbs.
In 1903, when General Electric began to offer pre-assembled kits of holiday lights, stringed lights were reserved for the wealthy and electrically savvy. For example, in 1903 a single string of electric lights cost $12, or around $300 today.
It would take several more years before holiday lights became a national tradition. On Christmas Eve 1923, President Calvin Coolidge began the country's celebration of Christmas by lighting the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse located south of the White House with 3,000 electric lights.
Today, illuminated strands of lights have become a large part of holiday celebrations and have even been adopted for use during various year-round events. Such lights can be a beautiful and festive addition to many celebrations.

Tips to prolong the life of your Christmas tree
Christmas trees are symbols of the holiday season and the spirit of giving that the season champions. Choosing and decorating a Christmas tree is a tradition for many families, and depending on the trees they choose, families may have some work to do to keep their trees glowing all season long.
Artificial Christmas trees require little, if any, maintenance. But live Christmas trees, which some people feel are more authentic and welcoming than their artificial counterparts, require daily maintenance. In addition to supplying the tree with water at least once per day, live Christmas tree owners can take these steps to prolong the life of their trees.
· Protect the tree on the way home. Your tree might be vulnerable to damage as you transport it
wrapping the tree if you plan to place it atop your vehicle. If possible, lay the tree in the bed of a pickup truck and close the cover over the bed. If you don't have access to a pickup truck but can use a minivan or SUV to transport your tree, see if the tree fits inside your vehicle. If it doesn't, wrap it tightly in a blanket or another form of cover, making sure the cover won't blow off in the wind when you hit the open road.
· Have the tree cut before you take it off the lot. If you typically purchase your tree from a florist or tree lot instead of a tree farm, then remember to ask the seller to recut the stem of the tree before you take it home. Tree farm trees are freshly cut, but trees sold away from the farm might have been chopped down weeks before they are ultimately sold. During the interval between being cut down
unclogs the system and ensures the tree will be able to consume water.
· Avoid placing the tree near heaters or drafty windows. Many people know that placing a live tree near a potentially hot heating vent poses a fire hazard. But doing so also can dry out the tree, decreasing the chances it will make it through the season. Placing the tree near drafty windows also can dry out the tree, so try to find a spot in your home with a consistent temperature.

· Water the tree often. Christmas trees need lots of water to make it through the season. You may notice the water in the tree stand disappears quickly when you first bring the tree home. That's because freshly cut trees will consume more water than trees that were cut several weeks ago. As the season goes on and the tree's vascular system begins to clog, you might not need to water the tree as much as you did when you first brought it home. But check the tree's water
stand twice per day when you first bring it home, refilling the stand with water whenever necessary.

INGREDIENTS
1 16 oz. can pumpkin
1 12 oz. can evaporated milk
1 cup sugar
3 eggs
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 box yellow cake mix
1 cup chopped nuts
2 sticks butter, melted & cooled
PREPARATION
1. Heat oven to 350°F.
FROSTING
8 oz. cream cheese
3/4 cup cool whip
1/2 cup powdered sugar
2. Line a 9”x13” pan with waxed paper.
3. Mix the first 5 ingredients and pour into lined cake pan. Sprinkle dry cake mix over the pumpkin mixture. Gently pat the chopped nuts into the mix. Top with melted butter.
4. Bake for 50-60 minutes. Allow to cool completely. Once cooled, invert on a foil lined pan or large platter.
5. Mix together cool whip, cream cheese and powdered sugar. Frost when completely cooled.
Oreo Truffles
INGREDIENTS
1 8 oz. brick cream cheese, softened
1 package oreo cookies, finely crushed, divided 16 oz. semi-sweet baking chocolate, melted
PREPARATION
1. Mix cream cheese and 3 cups cookie crumbs until well blended.
2. Shape into 48 (1-inch) balls. Dip in melted chocolate; place on waxed paper-covered baking sheet. Sprinkle with remaining cookie crumbs.
3. Refrigerate 1 hour or until firm. Store in tightly covered container in refrigerator.
Sponge Candy
INGREDIENTS
1 cup sugar
1 cup dark corn syrup
1 tbsp. vinegar
1 tbsp. baking soda
melted chocolate
PREPARATION
1. Combine sugar, corn syrup and vinegar in a large, heavy saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
2. Continue cooking without stirring until temperature reaches 300°F on a candy thermometer or until a little mixture dropped in cold water becomes very brittle.
3. Line 9 inch square pan with foil. Criss-cross and allow extra foil to hang off the edge so you can lift candy from pan easily. Lightly butter pan and pour in mixture.
4. Remove from heat. Quickly stir in soda. Mix well, but do not over-mix. Immediately pour into prepared pan.
5. Allow to cool completely. Using a sharp knife, break candy into pieces. Coat with melted chocolate of your choice. Makes about 1 lb.
Chocolate Chip Cookies
INGREDIENTS
2 cups butter
4 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups brown sugar
5 cups blended oatmeal (measure & blend in blender to a fine powder)
24 oz. chocolate chips
1 tsp. salt
1 8 oz. milk chocolate candy bar (grated)
4 eggs
2 tsp. baking powder
3 cups chopped nuts (your choice)
2 tsp. vanilla
PREPARATION
1. Heat oven to 375°F.
2. Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla; mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda.
3. Add chocolate chips, Hershey bar and nuts.
4. Roll into balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Makes about 112 cookies.

Few things are more comforting than sitting under a warm afghan and sipping a mug of steaming hot chocolate when cold wind and snow are blowing outside. Hot chocolate seems tailor-made for chilly winter evenings, providing the perfect indulgence while watching a favorite holiday film, entertaining friends around the holidays or warming up after a day spent building snowmen.
The terms “hot chocolate” and “hot cocoa” are used interchangeably, but they actually refer to two different beverages. Hot chocolate is made from shaved solid chocolate, which contains both cocoa and cocoa butter. Hot cocoa is made from cocoa powder, which alone does not constitute full chocolate. Either drink can be delicious, and many people prefer one over the other.
While traditional hot chocolate is a favorite for many, there are ways to make this beloved beverage more unique. By experimenting with flavor combinations, hot chocolate can become new again each day. The following are some flavorful ingredients you may want to try to spice up your next cup of hot chocolate.
· Caramel: Pair a rich, dark or semi-sweet hot chocolate with a swirl of caramel. The caramel will add sweetness and extra creaminess to the blend.
· Peppermint: Peppermint and hot chocolate can make for an interesting contrast. The cooling nature of peppermint works nicely with the heat of hot chocolate, imparting a wonderful aroma as well. Melt a candy cane or mint from a restaurant in the mug and enjoy.
· Nutmeg: What nutmeg does for eggnog it also can do for hot chocolate. Nutmeg offers that earthy bite that calls to mind long days baking in the kitchen.
· Chile powder: Chile can add a little kick to hot chocolate that works surprisingly well. Add just enough to offer a little tingle of residual heat at the back of your throat. This concoction also may help clear up a case of congestion or the sniffles.
· Coffee: Add a splash of coffee to the hot chocolate for an instant boost of caffeine and some mocha flavoring.
· Whipped cream: Create the flavor combination of a chocolate cream pie with a generous dollop of whipped cream. For a truly rich flavor, make a batch of fresh whipped cream, which will also thicken the hot chocolate.
· Coconut milk: Invoke the tropics by substituting coconut milk for regular milk. You may feel like you’re on your own private island.
· Peanut butter: Few people can resist the combination of chocolate and peanut butter. Melt a spoonful of peanut butter into the beverage and enjoy.
· Liqueur: Enhance hot chocolate with your favorite liqueurs. Orange and raspberry flavorings work well, or try a creamy spirited beverage, like Kahlua or Irish cream.
