Hilltop Baptist Church Celbrates their 10th Anniversary
A large crowd assembled on November 4 as the Hilltop Baptist Church celebrated its Tenth Anniversary service, and held a Thanksgiving Dinner. The church incorporated this year, and became an independent church. It was formerly known as the Evans Chapel. Dr. Jeremy Smith from Ringgold, Georgia, was their special guest speaker for the day. An expert on manuscripts, Dr. Smith displayed pages from Bibles printed in the 14001600s. He spoke on the development of the English Bible, and the preservation of Scripture. His determination and enthusiam is unmatched. From the Old Photo Album The Brant Basketball Team; 1925-1926
Regrettably, despite listing the year of the photo and the player’s names, we have little information regarding this town of Brant basketball team. Perhaps there are some local residents and or descendents of the team members who may be able to offer us some assistance as to where the games were played and what other teams were involved. We can tell you that two members of this team; Emil and Sam Chiavetta, were twins. According to one of our early 1990 Brant- Farnham Historical newsletters, in an article written by Angela Pero, the twin boys were born on March 3, 1905 on the Brant-Angola Road near Brant center. It was their parents, Luigi and Maria (Mogavero) Chiavetta who had donated the land to build Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church in Brant, N.Y. In 1930, the brothers moved from Brant to the Olean, N.Y. area, where they purchased a farm implement business, married and also raised their families. Emil and Sam both lived to be over 91 years of age. From the family section of our “1989 Town of Brant Sesquicentennial History Book”, we learn that Frank Notaro, also listed as a member of this Brant team, was born on November 13, 1904. He was the youngest child of Gaetano and Antonina Notaro. Frank was interested in sports throughout his life. During the 1920’s and 1930’s, in addition to playing on the Brant basketball team he also played on the Brant baseball team. The family history also mentions that Frank, who was an avid bowler since the 1930’s, participated in many bowling tournaments, and in 1986 at the age of 81, he won the New York State 70-and-Over Division. He then went on to the National Bowling Tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada, finishing fourteenth. Frank lived his adult life on the Milestrip Road farm in Brant, N.Y. with his wife and family. As a side note: Frank is the first cousin of Bowling Hall of Famer - Phyllis Notaro, who was born, and until her recent move to Orchard Park, N.Y., lived her entire life in the town of Brant. St. Francis Varsity Football Team Celebrated Senior Night
The St. Francis High School Varsity Football team celebrated Senior Night at a game on Friday, October 26, 2018 against the Timon Tigers. The St. Francis Red Raiders jumped out on the 2nd play of the game and never looked back as sophomore Jake Ritts threw a 47 yard TD pass to sophomore Noah Kunzman. Ritts followed that up with a 40 yard TD pass to sophomore Antonio Corsi and another 59 yard TD pass to senior Dominik Thomas. Ritts ran for a TD right after a safety for the Red Raiders on a bad snap through the end zone. Dawson Tyger ran for a 4 yard score. The final Red Raider points of the half and for the game was a 44 yard TD pass to junior Xzvaier Janczylik. Junior Mark Arrizza was perfect on all six conversion attempts as the Red Raiders beat Timon 44-8. Antonio Corsi led the defense with 11 tackles and 2 QB sacks, followed by senior Reilly Miller with 6 tackles. St. Francis visits St. Joe’s at 1:00 pm on Sat. Nov. 3 at the Marauders home field for the semi-final contest with the winner facing Canisius in the Championship game at UB Stadium. Contributed by St. Francis High School __________
Camp Pioneer Hosted the 2018 Winter Wonderland
Camp Pioneer hosted the 2018 Winter Wonderland December 1st. Mr. and Mrs. Claus were listening to the many Christmas wishes from the children at Wendt shelter. While waiting for their turn with Santa a guitarist, Mark Willert filled the air with beautiful Holiday music. A- 4 car train chugged along and carried many of the children to the festivities. Face painting and other games were enjoyed at Hickman Hall, along with hot cocoa and doughnuts for everyone. It was a wonderful night enjoyed by many grown ups as well as children hoping their wishes come true. Contributed by Pia Doro __________

The New York State Department of Education recently approved the Lake Shore Central School District Smart Schools plan and has approved the dispersal of $1,375,574. This money will be applied to improvements in school connectivity infrastructures, classroom devices, and high-tech security cameras, and window and door hardening. “We are thrilled to have our District plan approved by NYSED,” said Lake Shore Superintendent of Schools James Przepasniak. “This was an intitaitive driven by Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Melissa Bergler and Director of Technology, Jeff Barnes. Togeteher they identified the best way to implement and upgrade our current facilities and equipment. Their tireless work on this initiative will result in an improved learning experience for all students at Lake Shore.” The Smart Schools Bond Act was first proposed by Governor Cuomo in 2014 and subsequently approved by voters. It encourages investments in education technology that will prepare students for secondary education and the requirements of employment in the global economy. It also supports installation of high-tech security features in buildings and on campuses. Together, these investments will allow students access to technology in a safe learning environment. After a five month process of planning, the Lake Shore proposal was submitted for review by the Smart Schools Review Board in July of 2016. June 17, 1967 the Brant Volunteer Fire Company Marching Unit
We believe this 1967 photo of the Brant Volunteer Fire Company marching unit, was taken at one of the amazing Brant Strawberry Festivals. According to our Brant history books, the Brant Volunteer Fire Co. #1 was incorporated on February 6, 1956. Peter Pero Jr., James Muffoletto, Joseph A. Catalano, Nunzio F. Chiavetta, Anthony Muscato and John F. Gullo made up the Board of Directors for the newly formed fire company. Peter Pero Jr. generously donated the land to build the fire hall. In the first month and first year of the organization, 107 local men were on the roster. Our local volunteer fire companies, in addition to saving lives, homes and property, tend to be the glue that bonds our communities together. The Brant fire company certainly promotes this sense of community when hosting their annual spaghetti dinners, chicken dinners, Christmas and Easter celebrations and various other events. For many years, the Brant #1 school plays were performed in the fire company hall – those days certainly created some happy memories! As of this date in 2018, Anthony (Sonny) Catalano, at 89 years of age, is the only remaining charter member of the Brant Fire Department and the present-day Brant Fire Chief, David C. Pero Jr., is the grandson of Brant’s first ever Fire Chief – Pete Pero Jr. Pete Pero Jr. served the Brant community as fire chief for twenty-two years. Evans Senior Center Hosted Second Health Resource Fair
Evans Senior Center takes pride in collaborating with community partners and engaging with local residents about their health and well-being. They hosted their second Health Resource Fair that offered free on-site health services, including Hearing evaluation services and Chiropractic adjustments, along with over 24 other Health professional agencies. The fair provided the individuals in the Evans Community and surrounding townships the opportunity to have diverse Health resource agencies at their finger tips and live agents to assist people to navigate through health insurance policies and see what fits them the best. Director Veronica Sullivan can’t emphasize enough the need to continue each year to host and recruit agencies to be part of this event.
