Lake Erie is the western most border of our town of Brant, NY and two of our “photos” today (as you can see) are actually maps of a section of Brant’s lakeshore area, known as Lotus Point. In addition to the maps, we have a photo supplied by local photographer (and town of Brant resident) Larry Lowell, depicting a spectacular view of the Lotus Point in 2014. For our 1989 history book, historical writer Fred Brinkman mentioned the town of Brant’s lake area a few times. We are pleased to share 2014 View of Lotus Point, just a few of his comments with you. Brant, N.Y. by Larry Lowell Fred wrote about the formation of the Lake Shore Road which we see following the shoreline on both maps; “The Lake Shore Road ran from the village of LaGrange (Irving) to the boundary of Evans. It is interesting to note that many of the early roads started or ended at a tavern. As an example, the Lake Shore Road ran from the Cattaraugus Reservation to Steven Sturdevant’s and then to Adam Dibble’s. These were the first trails which the early settlers used to visit their neighbors and places of business and which later became the roads of today. It was said that there was an inn every two or three miles along the shore of Lake Erie.” Speaking of inns, he also wrote: “... Mr. Henry Hayes* [whose name is listed on the 1909 map] told me that it was his grandfather who operated the inn at the mouth of the creek and, in addition, operated a rope ferry across the Cattaraugus Creek to his inn.” Further in his writings he added: “The 1920’s and 30’s saw the area along our lakefront developed into summer homes and “gentlemen farms”. They were mostly wealthy individuals who had their main residence in Buffalo.” The WNY Heritage Magazine Fall 2016 Edition confirms Fred’s statement with the following comment (they had also included a photo of the home): “Irving [White] Potter* [his name is also listed on the 1909 map] had a beach house in Lotus Bay constructed in 1906 for his family’s enjoyment.” Not surprising, it is the beach areas that are the most popular destinations for fun and relaxation, especially during the summer-time. Fred described one of the popular spots of the mid 1900’s: “One of the beaches that drew the largest crowd was “Hay’s Bay” which was developed into a mini-amusement park with not only swimming and picnic areas, but cabins which were rented by the week, rides and a large dance hall where many went to hear the “Big Band” sound.” The Lake Erie shoreline in Brant, N.Y. is almost all privately owned, therefore access to the beach is limited. However, the general public (local and otherwise) is able to enjoy the beach, complete with picnic and camping areas by visiting Evangola State Park, 80% of which is located within the town of Brant’s borders.
