Paul Biellak of Angola Receives a Quilt of Valor
On Independence Day, Mary Lou Zerby and Mary Schmidt from the local Quilt of Valor Chapter, WNY Quilters for a Cause, presented Paul Biellak of Angola a quilt thanking him for his service to our country. Paul served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971. He was deployed to Viet Nam where he was awarded a Purple Heart in 1969. According to 2007 historical records prepared by then Evans Historian Cheryl Delano, the Evans School #12 was known as the Lake Bay School and was located on the Old Lake Shore Road. It was situated in front of the Erie County Sewer District #2 building, but has since been torn down. Wednesday Evening Series at the Gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park
The continuing Wednesday Evening Series at the Gazebo in Angola’s Centennial Park hosted the Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra from Lancaster Central Schools on Wednesday, July 18th. Approximately a 30 member group presented a fast moving, high energy evening. Their director Ken Kowalski gave information about the development of steel drums in Jamaica in the 1920s and 1930s. A sample drum was taken around the park to show the audience. The group received an instant standing ovation at the end of their program when the entire park audience jumped to their feet with resounding applause. An encore was presented to close the evening. The group was so well received that arrangements have already been made to invite them back to the park for the summer of 2019. The evening was sponsored by the new Angola Tops Friendly Market. On Wednesday, July 25th Cahal Dunne, billed as an Irish piano man from Pittsburgh, PA, appeared at the park. Cahal and his “white grand piano” offered a fast moving, very entertaining evening for the crowd at the park. In addition to his piano music and singing, he told many stories throughout his presentation. Cahal was born in Ireland but is very happy to be a naturalized United States citizen who grew up in the USA. A substantial group of Irish descents from South Buffalo were at the concert to welcome their friend back to Angola. He tours the Northeastern part of the country during the summer and he has an impressive circuit in Florida during the winter. He conducts tours to Ireland approximately every other year. From Angola he was on his way to present a program in Corry, PA and was set to travel to Ireland in early August. The evening was sponsored by the Evans Township Lions Club and the Angola Park & Gazebo Committee. At press time Josie Waverly, billed as a Country Star from Hilton, NY, was scheduled to present the park concert on Wednesday, August 1st. It has been many years since Josie was able to return to Angola. She was scheduled to be sponsored by Evans Bank and the Evans Agency. Two generations of Artistic Blacksmithing
Alphonso Butlak IV and his grandfather Alphonso Butlak Jr. demonstrate their blacksmithing skills at the 15th Annual Brant Summer Festival
Blacksmithing is a skill you most often find only in a historical museum village atmosphere, however, at the 15th Annual Brant Summer Festival, festival goers were able to witness the work and techniques of two local blacksmiths. The festival was held on Father’s Day weekend at the Brant Town Park. Alphonso Butlak Jr. (89 years young) and his grandson Alphonso Butlak IV, both of Farnham, N.Y., demonstrated their blacksmithing skills to all those interested in learning this age old craft. Along with their portable forge, a few anvils and many necessary tools of the trade, they had plenty of examples of their aluminum and iron work available for viewing. This is the 3rd year Mr. Butlak Jr. has participated at the Brant Summer Festival. In addition to apprenticing with his grandfather, Alphonso Butlak IV at 23 years of age, is also a local artist. He received some notoriety in early July of this year when he crafted the head of the Mercury statue which hangs over the Washington Street entrance of the Ellicott Square building, located in Buffalo, N.Y. According to the article written by Sean Kirst in “The Buffalo News” published July 7th, 2018, this building of great historical significance, was designed by Charles Atwood and erected in 1896. Today the building is owned by Ellicott Development Co. with Mr. Carl Paladino as founder and chairman. From this same article we learned that the original head of Mercury had fallen from the building many years ago and was destroyed. Mercury’s head had been missing from the building structure for quite some time. Three years ago while attending college, Alphonso (at that time 19 years of age), noticed the missing head and decided to help. He met with Mr. Paladino and offered to design and replace it for free! It took Alphonso three years and three tries before he finished the new sculptured face and head. However, once completed and in place, the new sculpture caused quite the uproar in Buffalo, N.Y. amongst the local architectural historians and art conservators and scholars. They felt that the newest sculpture did not meet their historical artistic or historical architectural and preservation standards and guidelines. What began as a good deed became a historic controversy. What is ironic is that the Butlak family lives in one of the older historical structures found in the Village of Farnham. Their home and shop is the beautiful brick building once known as Schwert’s Store which was built in 1902. We as local Brant and Farnham residents may not know much about the historical art or historical architecture of Buffalo, N.Y., but we do recognize that we are fortunate to have such accomplished craftsmen and artisans as Alphonso Butlak and Alphonso Butlak IV as members of our community.
