Memorial Day Services at the Brant Memorial Park
This past Memorial Day, the town of Brant community gathered together at the Brant four corners Memorial Park to pay tribute to our Veterans. Supervisor Mark DeCarlo welcomed all to the services and introduced our local elected officials, before calling upon Frank Broughton of the Faith Bible Baptist Church to deliver the opening prayer. Senior Chief Neil I. Ross, US Navy, Retired, was the guest speaker. Within his speech, Neil borrowed two well-chosen sentences from “VFW Magazine/May 2019”, reminding us that; “More than 1.2 million Americans have died in uniform since the Revolutionary War. Their lives were cut short so the rest of us could live free and pursue our dreams.” Powerful statements to contemplate on an important day of remembrance. The American Legion Newcomb Long Post 928 then honored our fallen heroes with a gun salute and the playing of Taps, followed by the presentation of the memorial wreath. Five flags representing the five branches of service were placed in front of the Veterans monument by five young children. Patriotic songs were sung after which Father Frank Kadryna from Parish of Our Lady Church, Brant N.Y. closed the services with the Benediction. Refreshments of coffee and donuts were available after the service. Brant Holds 16th Annual Summer Festival
The Town of Brant 16th Annual Summer Festival was held at the Brant Town Park on Fathers Day Weekend. Despite the rain and high winds, vendors, performers and attendees showed their true community spirit. Children splashed in the mud puddles, played on the bounce houses, participated in the power wheels drag race and even went and played with the train set up inside. The smell of summerfest food filled the air as well as laughter and music. Saturday was filled with fun activities, the firemens waterball competition, Drifters Car Cruize, Hawg Thunder Patriot Bike Parade and Show, bounce houses and more. The music entertainment on Saturday was performed by Crash Cadillac and Terry Buchwald, all donated by local businesses. There was a beautiful and very interesting historical display of the history of businesses in the area, presented by our local Competitors for Sunday’s power wheels drag race historian, Patty Friend. There was a photo contest, train demonstration courtesy of the Buffalo-Gowanda Model Railroad club, and huge basket raffle inside the recreation building. The basket raffle was a fundraiser for the "SHARE" organization that helps families in need in our community. There were large item raffles, 50/50s, and the Evans and Brant police set up for childhood safety information finger printing, plus MUCH more. Sunday was a day of fun activities for the kids and adults alike, starting with Suzannes School of Dance performance and followed by the annual parade and tractor show. The Evans-Brant "fit and fab" seniors did a workout demonstration that had the pavilion full of participants, as well as the Zumba workout demonThe numerous raffle items inside the recreation building stration from Corbett Seneca of the Cattaraugus Community Center. The children had their annual power wheels drag race which is growing into a big event and really is something to see! The Hamburg Kingsmen Bugle and Drum Corp. (sponsored by the SHARE organization) joined in the parade and did several performances that were very enjoyable and truly displayed years of experience and talent. The attendees got to enjoy some fun mc- ing by the locally famous Jeff Connors as they spent their Sunday afternoon at the festival. The only damper during the weekend was the weather and it contributed to the cancellation of the huge fire works display. The committee has reyour home or scheduled the postponed fireworks property fast in our display to June 3oth, complete with Hamburg Kingsmen Bugle and Drum Corp. picnic in the park before hand your home property afast Real Estateor section sponsored by Goya Foods. All-in-all the Brant Summer Festival was another wonderful in our Real Estate section success and we look forward to planning for 2020. The annual festival not only benefits the Town of Brant and other local communities, but does inside fundraising for other causes as well. Thanks to this years donations, the festival was able to raised money for PENNYSAVER St. Judes Children's Hospital, SHARE and Lake Shore Jr. Football and Cheerleading. Coastal Carolina University had 25 students join the Phi Sigma Pi national honor fraternity during the Spring 2019 semester. Phi Sigma Pi national honor fraternity is a gender-inclusive organization dedicated to promoting lifelong learning, inspiring members to lead, and cultivating lasting fraternal bonds, while always living with honor. Members have the goal of improving humanity through the principles of scholarship, leadership and fellowship. In order to join Phi Sigma Pi, students must have completed a minimum of one semester or one quarter of collegiate work and earn a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. Evans Senior Center Held Workshop on Breaking the Sugar Habit
Educating workshop offered at the Evans senior center on the consumption of sugar and how sugar has a bittersweet reputation when it comes to health. This workshop explained how sugar occurs naturally in all foods that contain carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables, grains, and dairy. Consuming whole foods that contain natural sugar is okay. Plant foods also have high amounts of fiber, essential minerals, and antioxidants, and dairy foods contain protein and calcium. Health Promotion Coordinator for Medicare Outreach Programs, Jennifer Johnson broke down how our body digests these foods slowly, the sugar in them offers a steady supply of energy to your cells. A high intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains also has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers. Which, unfortunately affects seniors at a higher rate, this is why the senior center is continuing to provide diverse workshops and speakers to provide vital health information to its members. On Thursday, June 13th, the Lake Shore Leadership in Action Class hosted a Leadership Banquet to both honor Lake Shore’s senior leaders and their guests. Specifically, Leadership students were awarded certificates of completion, and senior Student Government and Class of 2019 officers were presented plagues for their years of service to Lake Shore High School. Following this recognition, Leadership students wrote and presented speeches about the special leaders and heroes in their lives. It proved to be a very moving and emotional night for all who attended as speakers shared compelling stories of empathy, commitment, passion and inspiration. The Lake Shore Leadership in Action class would like to thank our administration who attended and all of our guests whose attendance made this night special (Pictured: Lake Shore Leadership Students with their honorary certificates of completion).
