Line up for the parade will be at the Angola Fire Hall grounds at 41 Commercial Street at 9:30 AM. The Parade will start at 10:00 AM. We will march to the Forest Avenue Cemetery for special services and then back to the Angola Fire Hall grounds at 41 Commercial Street. (Rain location will be the Angola Fire Hall at 41 Commercial St.) We invite Gold Star Mothers, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Firefighters, Police, all organizations, Public Officials and all Veterans from all wars to join us for this important parade and service. In 1936, it was decided that the old wooden two story Brant #1 School was in poor condition. High winds would cause the structure to rock. A new school was needed to continue the education of Brant students. The newly built Brant #1 opened on November 19, 1936. Fourteen years later, in 1950, the Brant school joined the Lake Shore Central School District. We believe you will recognize many of the faces and names from this 1950 school photo! Sgt. Kevin Sullivan Inducted into Army National Guard NCO Corps
The New York Army National Guard’s 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry welcomed nine newly promoted non-commissioned officers (NCOs) into its leadership ranks during a ceremony held during scheduled unit training April 13, 2018 at Fort Drum, N.Y. The 2-101st Cavalry, the reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition squadron based in Niagara Falls, held an NCO induction ceremony to celebrate the new Soldiers joining the ranks of a professional noncommissioned officer corps. Sgt. Kevin Sullivan from Lake View, N.Y., marked the transition into the NCO corps. Sullivan is assigned as a Charlie Troop Infantryman. The event allows fellow NCOs of a unit to build and develop a cohesive bond, said Sgt. Major Eric Heller, the Operations Sgt. Maj. for the squadron. The ceremony supports team development and serves as a legacy for future NCO Induction Ceremonies, Heller said. The newly promoted NCOs all now move into leadership positions, responsible for teams and sections in the squadron to train and prepare their Soldiers for service to state and nation. Most Precious Blood Church and Operation Good Neighbor wish to thank all who donated to the recent food drive effort. Each year after the holidays it seems those less fortunate are forgotten until next year’s holidays. This year’s drive collected more than 500 pounds of food and included 490 food items, 560 containers of baby food, 73 paper goods and 23 other miscellaneous items for a total of 1146 items collected. Highlighting this drive was the large donation of baby food from the First Congregational United Church of Christ through their own drive sponsored by Katherine, Michaela and the Confirmation Program. Everything collected went to Operation Good Neighbor for distribution to those in need and reside in the Town of Evans.

The Evans Senior Center Director has been networking in the community and has began a new partnership with AFC716 which offers traditional Tai Chi instruction and traditional Kung Fu instruction. This particular program has been asked by the Senior population for some time and Director Veronica Sullivan was very pleased to meet and ask instructors Daniel Cimino, and Kate Molik to partner with the Evans Senior Center. Each Tai Chi Classes always has two instructors. Daniel Cimino, and Kate Molik partner up and use their individual talents, personalities, and skills to help people be healthier, stronger, more mindful, energized, relaxed, active, and happier by helping develop an integrated mind/body/spirit approach to their health and their life. Tai Chi is a slow moving, low impact exercise designed to build balance and coordination. It helps build energy and improve mental focus. The benefits of Tai Chi feel similar to that of Yoga, but with no bending, or being down on your hands and knees. It has also been said that an hour of Tai Chi is similar to 20 minutes of running for your cardiovascular health, all without ever running! Evans Senior Center is excited for this new opportunity to provide a healthy avenue of mental, emotional and physical well being. On Friday, May 4th, students in Mrs. Cassi Chudzik’s Grade 3 class celebrated May Crowning. This is an wonderful tradition at Southtowns Catholic School that takes place in the month of May, a week after the Grade 3 students celebrate their 1st Holy Communion. In honoring the Virgin Mary as “the Queen of May”, the children placed a crown of roses on Mary’s head. After the ceremony, the children received their 1st bible and then had little reception with their families in the community room. May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month Spring is here and it is motorcycle season again in Western New York. Riders across our community are tuning up their bikes and getting ready for the open road, making this the perfect time to raise awareness of motorcycles and emphasize safety on our roads and highways. The month of May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and I would like to share some recent initiatives that I think will help promote safety on our roadways.

First is the commitment to improving New York’s infrastructure that was made in the recently enacted state budget. Funding for transportation infrastructure increased $1.7 billion this year, resulting in a fair, regionally balanced $29 billion dollar plan that will ensure no region of our state is shortchanged. The Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program, better known as CHIP’s, is funded at $503 million this year, and $1.5 billion is dedicated to local roads and bridges through the PAVE-NY and BRIDGE NY programs. These investments are absolutely necessary if we are going to maintain roads and keep them safe for motorcyclists. At a recent rally promoting the dangers associated with distracted driving, I heard from advocates for tougher laws and listened to tragic stories from families who lost loved ones due to accidents caused by distracted drivers. We must do more in New York State to deter this irresponsible behavior behind the wheel. That is why I am pushing for approval of a bill that I support called Evan’s Law, which will stiffen penalties for distracted driving and provide law enforcement with the tools and authority to more effectively investigate these accidents at the scene. It is very important to remember that whether you are on two wheels or driving a four-wheeled vehicle, motorcycle safety is a two-way street. Riders should take a moment at the start of each season to review all aspects of motorcycle safety. They can also benefit from safety programs offered for new riders seeking to learn the critical skills necessary to ride safely, or those for experienced cyclists looking to strengthen and reinforce safe driving practices. This season, let us be sure to obey those signs that remind us to ‘look twice, save a life’. The Angola Pennysaver would like to express our support towards the Garrasi family. Freddy was an unbelievable young man whose life was cut short by the carelessness of a motorist. Army National Guard Soldiers Receive Award for 2017 Hurricane Response
Major General Anthony P. German, the Adjutant General of New York, announces the recent award recognitions for members of the New York Army National Guard who participated in the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief support missions following the devastation caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria in 2017. Receiving the Humanitarian Service Award were:

The Historical Society’s Quest to find the oldest tree in the Town of Brant
The Brant-Farnham Historical Society recently sponsored a contest to locate the oldest tree within our town of Brant boundaries. A deadline of March 25th was set to coincide with the 179th Anniversary of our town. The tree that we estimated to be the oldest is the tree submitted by Corbin Gonzalez. It is a Maple tree with a 14’ 8” circumference. Using this information we calculated this tree to be 252 years old! If true, this suggests that the tree began growing in the year of 1766. The Gonzalez family tree is located at 11053 Brant–Reservation Road (on what was once the Salvatore LaDuca property). Be sure to take a look the next time you pass by! Corbin was awarded with his prize of $100 cash and also a framed 8 x 10 photo of the winning tree at the Brant Town Board meeting on May 8th. The frame and photo were donated by Larry Lowell. The frame was handmade by Larry. In addition to Corbin’s entry, the historical society received information on a total of 13 trees, submitted from eight other households within the town of Brant; Verna Bogdan, Pat and Judd Granica, Steven Jumper, Ed Awald, Chris Awald, Ron Friend, Sam Chiavetta Jr., and Jerzy Zieba. Tree locations were on Walnut St. farmland, Halley Rd., Milestrip Rd., Brant-Reservation Rd., Brant-Angola Rd., Hardpan Rd. as well as Commercial St. in the village of Farnham. The tree varieties consisted of: Maple, Red Oak, Black Walnut, Tulip Poplar, Oak, Linden, Catalpa (Indian Cigar), and Norway Spruce. The tree circumferences ranged from 8’ to 14‘ 8”. Using the growth rates, the estimated tree ages varied and it appears that most of the “born” (or planted) dates were during the 1800’s. We also calculated one of the trees to be 179 years old (submitted by Sam Chiavetta). This means that the tree may have been planted in the year of 1839 - which is the very same year that our town of Brant became incorporated! What an awesome coincidence and some fun information to include in our local history books! All submissions were verified by the town of Brant historian Patty Friend along with town of Brant resident Larry Lowell on the coldest and windiest Saturday in April. Larry Lowell also took photos of almost all of the submitted trees. Each of the contestants will receive a participation ribbon at the Brant Summer Festival in June. It was a fun contest to celebrate our 179th year and we were thrilled that so many participated. As we mentioned in other notices, we recognize that there may be an older tree out there somewhere, so we welcome any and all information you may have on your own tree.
