Historic Vietnam Visit Has Local Connection

Armed Vietnamese soldiers watched as an American aircraft carrier approached their country’s coastline recently for the first time in more than four decades. But the vessel was on a mission of diplomacy, not war. Among the 6000 proud members of the crew on the USS Aircraft Carrier Carl Vinson is a local Airman E3 Eric Anders. He is the son of Julie and Joel Anders of Forestville and the grandson of Bill and Marge Henry of the Town of Evans. Airman Anders, like many of the crew of the Carl Vinson, are honored that their carrier was chosen for such a special mission of diplomacy . Eric’s grandfather Bill Henry stated that, “We could not be more proud of both of our grandsons". Eric’s brother Brandon is also serving our country as a Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune. Both the boys are proud to call WNY their home. Eric is a former employee, from May 2016 through June 2017, of Signals in Irving, New York. Contributed by the family of Eric Anders ___________

VILLAGE OF ANGOLA NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING FOR 2018-2019 BUDGET RESOLVED that pursuant to Village Law Section 5-504 the 2018-2019 tentative budget for the Village of Angola was completed and filed with the Village Clerk at the Village Clerk’s Office, 41 Commercial Street, Angola, NY on March 12, 2018. This photo of the original wooden church (which burned in 1930), shows the parsonage located to the right. If you look closely, you have a glimpse of the cemetery in the far back. Steps for reconstruction of the church were taken immediately after the fire. On Monday September 22, 1930, work was started and the cornerstone laying scheduled for October 19th was postponed until October 26 on account of the inclement weather (4 feet of snow). Mr. John Nordblum, the oldest member of the congregation (79 years old ) laid the cornerstone, assisted by August Smith and Wilbur Avey who were the first two to break ground for the new building. On Sunday April 19, 1931, the present brick structure was dedicated. The parsonage was sold and moved further down Church Street (current home of Sandi Meli). Years later a more modern parsonage was built on Commercial Street. Submitted by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society __________

The 1909 New Century Atlas of Erie County N.Y. highlights many of the Town of Brant farms and includes a description of the Martin Farms: “ MARTIN FARMS ...containing 250 acres, owned by George L. Martin. These farms are located in lots 7, 8 and 9 on the Milestrip Road. Its principal revenues are as follows: 30 acres of raspberries and strawberries, about 18 horses are supported on the place and 150 to 200 tons of hay are cut from its meadows. Wheat, corn, oats, potatoes, beans, peas and tomatoes for the canning factory* and 35 acres of medium timber is a fair representation of a farm ranking among the best farms of the town and county.” [*Erie Preserving Co.] A map of Brant from 1969 shows these same farms as belonging to Ward Martin. As we can see from this piece of early written history, farmers raised plenty of fruits and vegetables, so in turn, this generated a need for workers to help cultivate and pick the growing crops. Throughout the years, the workers were of all ages and nationalities, however in late 1890’s and early 1900’s workers were primarily of Italian descent. Housing facilities were available on almost all of the local family farms for the laborers. These “farm camps”, consisted of small “shacks”, and were active in Brant up through and including the 1970’s. Many workers would live here from spring to fall. Whole families worked the harvest season until child labor laws eventually forbade children on the farms. We have heard and read stories regarding farm camp life such as “piling into the trucks the day school ended for the summer to head to the farms in Brant to work the farms and pick vegetables” and living in a “one-room “shack” with cooking and sleeping areas separated by sheets hung over wires spanning the room”. Remembrances also include getting “water in buckets from the community pump” and "using an outhouse”. The machinery and tools used in farming today have greatly changed the requirements of the planting, cultivating and harvesting activities, however, good hardworking farm help is still a necessity of a successful, productive farm. Middle School Musicians Making their Mark in Erie County

LAKE SHORE HIGH SCHOOL BANDS TO WORK WITH WORLD RENOWNED COMPOSER On March 22nd and 23rd, the Lake Shore High School Bands, under the direction of Eric Blodgett, will work with music icon Stephen Melillo. Mr. Melillo is an internationally renowned composer, conductor and clinician. He started his career many years ago in an upstate New York high school as a music educator and since has revolutionized the music world with his compositions of music for the “3rd Millennium”. He will work with both the Concert and Symphonic Bands on some of his compositions in a detailed rehearsal schedule over his two day visit. Mr. Melillo literally brings a world of experience as he has written music for film, orchestras, bands, and choruses around the world (professional and amateur). He is a winner of three Telly & Ava Awards (2009), has been nominated for the Pulitzer and Nemmers Prize in Music (2018), and has composed two Oscar-nominated film scores. They are part of the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine program. They brought a power point presentation and showed the kids how important it is to take care of their teeth and answered questions about becoming a dentist. In some of the very earliest days of the town of Brant, wagon making was considered the main industry, with lumbering listed as second. A business directory of 1895 lists “Milford Calkins: a saw and planning mill”. Around 1902 or 1903, this sawmill building (originally built by Samuel L. Butts), was moved via horsepower, beams and logs from “the woods” on Delaware Creek to the Brant-Reservation Road. This building became part of the old Shefflin Sawmill, which had been purchased by Milford Calkins. Page 129 of The 1909 Atlas of Erie County N.Y. records the following advertisement: “BRANT - Milford Calkins, Saw Mill and Feed Mill. Lumber, Shingles, Grape Trays, Potato and Tomato Crates, Flour, Feed, Patent Roofing. Shipping Point: Angola, N.Y., Brant, N.Y.” Eventually, Mr. Milford Calkins sold the mill to Mr. Ed Falk. Johnnie’s Speedway, North Collins, N.Y. was physically located on Brant Rd. (also known as Rt. 249) in the town of Brant. Owned by John Gullo and opening in1959, the popular dirt track featured Super Bomb Stock cars and Midgets. 1962 advertisements for Johnnie’s Speedway boasted of the “Fastest and Finest 1/3 Mile Track in W.N.Y.” encouraging us all to “See the Famous “Figure 8” Race presented for the first time in the East.” Complete with “THRILLS! CHILLS! SPILLS! ” Bleachers were available for the spectators. Shown is a photo of Johnnie’s Speedway*, a Pit Ticket/Pit Pass and a tag for town of Brant driver/ owner Bill Dispence in car #24. Other favorite local drivers were “Stroker” McGurk, Joe DeCarlo and Pepper Martin. Area newspapers listed the race results in the Sports section of the papers. June 24, 1961 race results included: “1st Race, 10 laps, time 3:52:6 - Tubby Abramo, Stroker McGurk, Bill Felton…” June 17th, 1961 race results in part were: “1st Race, 10 laps, time 3:37:3 - Stroker McGurk, North Collins, Tiny Goran, Collins Center and Bernie Young, South Dayton... Participating drivers came from all over— some from as far as Ohio! In 1964 the speedway became known as “North Collins Speedway”. An article in the Gowanda News & Observer , Thurs. April 29, 1965 stated that “North Collins Speedway will be the Friday night spot in the Eastern Racing Circuit of America. Other tracks in the circuit are Holland Raceway on Saturday night and Perry Raceway on Sunday afternoon. The New Car field will be comprised of at least eight 1965 Chevys, four 1965 Fords, three 1965 Plymouths or Dodges, plus many 1964 and 1963 models.” Summer weekends during those years on Brant Road (in the towns of Brant / North Collins), must have been busy and noisy- but also pretty darn exciting! The Sager family operated their dairy farm on Brant-Farnham Road for a number of years, so this float was an excellent representation of their farm. Elsie lived in the town of Brant her entire 97 years. She lived with her son Bobby and his wife Shirley and family in the family home until her passing. The Annual Strawberry Festival put Brant on the map. Over 20,000 visitors attended the Strawberry Festival its first year of 1958. This well loved festival was celebrated until the early 1970’s. Fun Science Experiments at SS. Peter & Paul School

Eighth grade students at SS. Peter & Paul School in Hamburg have a great relationship with their kindergarten buddies.
