We have learned from Operation Good Neighbor (OGN) that each year after the Holidays the many efforts to provide food for those in need are not as plentiful. Consequently Most Precious Blood Church will be conducting a food drive to restock the Evans food pantry at OGN that will start Ash Wednesday March 6 and run through the Lenten season ending Easter Sunday April 21. We will accept dry and canned foods only with examples consisting of soups, cereals, pasta and vegetables. Preferred soup is chicken noodle and tomato. Baby food is also in great demand. Current programs of assistance will not provide for paper goods such as Kleenex, paper towels and toilet paper so these will be collected, also. All goods will be turned over to Operation Good Neighbor for distribution.

In a box of letters donated to the historical society by David Ciminesi, we came across an interesting Brant 1 school tax bill. (One of which we would certainly be thankful to receive today!)

The property owner was Frank Ciminesi with Joseph A. Catalano and Sophie Catalano as the signed “Collectors”. It is dated September 1945 and the school tax on 20 acres valued at $3,500.00 was $53.02. The Brant 1 School district was not part of the Lake Shore Central School system at that time.

The congregation of the Holy Cross Lutheran Church has strong roots which date back to the year of 1864. Their earliest services were held in a little school house on Erie Road prior to erecting their own church; a beautiful brick building which today is located on Church Street.

As per the 1964 centennial booklet of Holy Cross Church, we find that in their centennial year of 1964, there were 23 members who had been confirmed prior to the year of 1900. Their names and confirmation years were listed as follows: Henry Brockman, 98, - 1880. John Stolts, 94, - 1882. Louise Badka Avey, 92, - 1886. Louise Wollatz Valentine - 1887. Minnie Brockman Orts and Louise Winters Wasmund - 1889. Bertha Middlemire Wasmund - 1890. William Johnt, Frank White and Matilda Falk Merow were all confirmed in 1891. Reka Nordblum Carbeck and Anna Guelzow Russell - 1893. Elizabeth Helwig Badka and Emma Brockman Brinkman - 1894. Rose Sager Berns and Clara Badka Walker - 1895. Charles Middlemire - 1896. Albert Juhl and Emilie Ave - 1897. William Kalla and Charles Berns - 1898. Edward Kalla and Augustina Thunnel Slade were confirmed in 1899.

*Verna Borngraber, a lifelong resident of Brant, was born on the Brant-Farnham Road to Alice and Alfred Borngraber. She later married Ken Ditcher and together they raised their family in the village of Farnham, N.Y. This photo was donated to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society in Verna’s memory by her daughter Doreen (Ditcher) Hedderich of Eden, N.Y.

Southtowns Democratic Committee News

The Southtowns Democratic Committee met on Saturday February 16, 2019 at Dan's Restaurant on Main Street in Angola for their reorganizational meeting.

The newly elected officers are as follows: Chairman, Ann Converso; Vice Chairman, Jonica DiMartino of Angola; Secretary, Molly McLaughlin; Treasurer, Debra Ritz; Sergeant at Arms, Kara Kerwin Kane.

The meeting was well attended and exciting plans for the year were formulated, including a July Golf Tournament, the Annual Summer Picnic in August and a Gala Recognition dinner in October.

This is a very busy, but amazing time for Democrats across the state and particularly in the Southtowns including Hamburg, Eden, Boston, Collins, North Collins, Concord, Brant, Evans/Angola, Colden and Sardinia.

School Sweet Science

Mrs. Jane Brod’s Grade 1 Science class used carbonated water & Effervescent Tablets to make candy hearts dance. The students broke into groups and discussed what they thought was going to happen during the experiment.
