Town of Brant resident Carmen Vacco donated this photo to the Brant - Farnham Historical Society. It depicts the Producer Canners Strawberry Festival float (entry #14), which participated in the Brant Strawberry Festival parade during the late 1950’s or 1960’s. According to Carmen, Mr. Mike Privino is driving. The photo is taken from the front of the Brant Fire Hall on “NY 249”. Many will recognize the house and garage in the back ground. Nina Notaro-Faltus wrote a section in our 1989 Brant anniversary book about the local canning companies which included information about the Producer Canners Cooperative. Her story mentions that “on March 1, 1943, five farmers from Brant, together with Lee Twitchel of Gowanda and Lee Foxton of Irving, formed the Producer-Canners Cooperative at North Collins, NY. They purchased the assets of the Helen Packing Co. As time went on more farmers joined the Cooperative. The Brant farmers were Joseph Morgano, Ward Martin, Joseph Guzzetta, George Leone, Joseph Conti, Sam Morgano, the Muscato Brothers (Charles, Anthony and Sam), Frank Russo, Walden Krull and the Loretto Brothers (Andrew, Leonard, Conio and Joe). The Thomas Brothers of North Collins and Russell Joy of Fredonia were the last to join. In the 50’s and 60’s quite a number of farmers pulled out of the Cooperative. The growers produced strawberries, raspberries, green and wax beans, tomatoes and grapes. The first year or two tomato paste was one of the main items packed, followed by tomato puree and tomato juice. The major item was snap beans, green and wax. The firm discontinued operations in 1972 when it closed its doors because of the inability to install an expansive waste disposal system mandated by the state.” Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society __________
