Daughter of late Ignatius (late Helen Majchrzak) Gronkowski. Aunt of Glenn John and Heather Gronkowski. Aunt of Gordon Sr., Gordon Jr., Daniel (Brittany), Christopher (Brittany), Robert and Glenn Gronkowski. Godmother of Glenn Gronkowski Sr., Andrew Haberer and Clifford Schmitz. Frank F. Mantione of Eden, NY, 85, died at home on January 9, 2022 following a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was the beloved husband of Nancy (Reap) and father to three daughters: Judy Picun (Karen Schiersing) of Silver Creek, NY, Celeste (Jason) Karle of Pembroke, MA and Melissa (Michael)Lackey of Amherst, NY. Frank was the loving grandfather to Liam, Trevor, Megan and Lincoln. He is survived by his sister Santina (Thomas) Kumiega, brother-in-law Gerald Reap, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Frank served in the U.S. Navy aboard a Naval destroyer from 1954-1958. Returning home to Buffalo, he pursued a college degree at the University of Buffalo while working at the Ford Motor Company. In 1962 Frank married Nancy T. Reap. Frank earned a PhD in Psychology from U.B. in 1974, and worked for the NY State Department of Developmental Disabilities until his retirement in 1991. Frank was a true renaissance man, who pursued many interests and hobbies including golf, cycling, cross-country skiing, camping and hiking. All those who knew Frank knew that music was his passion, and he was an accomplished piano player and choral singer. Frank performed with the Freudig Singers, the Buffalo Philharmonic chorus and Orchard Park Chorale groups. In retirement, Frank taught Psychology at ECC. He served as head of the Conservation Board for the Town of Eden for 10 years and was instrumental in developing a map of green space for the town. With his wife Nancy, Frank volunteered as a docent for the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens. Frank was a lifelong fan of the Buffalo Bills and NY Yankees. Frank and Nancy enjoyed traveling. He instilled in his children and grandchildren a love of music, animals, and the outdoors. A memorial service celebrating Frank’s life will be held at a later date. Donations may be made in Frank’s memory to Buffalo Hospice Foundation, P.O Box 590, Buffalo, NY 14240-0590. Words of sympathy may be left on www.LaingFuneralHome.com __________

The Little Loop Football “VIKINGS” pose for their team photo. The 1968 program book notes: “BRANT VIKINGS - Peewee Division of TYRO Football Conference of Western New York. Legislator Mills’ January Column

Hello everyone and happy 2022! A new year brings new goals and I am thrilled to hit the ground running to better serve the people of Erie County and District 11. It is an honor to have the opportunity to serve as Legislator for the next two years and I look forward to meeting with as many constituents as possible to hear their ideas and concerns. In December, I had the opportunity to name The Trading Post and its Executive Director Peggy Austin as the Erie County Legislature’s Citizen of the Month. Located in Springville, The Trading Post provides basic food, clothing and infant needs for more than 25,000 families per year. When you break it down, that equals out to more than $1,000,000 worth of goods while the organization operates on a budget of less than $70,000 per year. Choosing The Trading Post and Peggy Austin was a no-brainer, I couldn’t think of another organization or person more worthy of the designation. The work they have done and continue to do impacts the community in ways words could never describe. As a Legislator, it warms my heart seeing organizations like The Trading Post dedicating so much time and effort for the betterment of the community and those in need. I will never be able to adequately thank you for all you, but please know it is appreciated beyond measure. In other news, I am happy to share that I will be participating in the annual Valentines for Veterans program this year. My office will once again team up with area schools where children have the opportunity to create hand-made Valentines cards to be handed out to Veterans. In doing this, they not only get to tap into their creative side, but they also get a lesson on how important it is to show support for local Veterans. It has been a chilly start to the month of January, but that comes as no surprise living in Western New York. If you find cabin fever starting to set in, there are plenty of familyfriendly outdoor events to take part in. From learning about Lake Erie and its powerful effects in the winter to learning about how small, local species make it through our long, dark winters—there is something to keep everyone engaged. With the plummeting temperatures, I also would like to remind local fishermen the importance of taking proper precautions when it comes to ice fishing on Lake Erie. Remember to stay off of the ice if it is two inches or less, it is only safe to proceed when the ice is four inches or thicker. If you are unsure, please check the most recent Lake Erie fishing report for weather conditions and thickness of ice.
