Lake Shore Student Mural Showcased at Conference
Artwork depicts Haudenosaunee culture
Recently, two students from Lake Shore High School created a mural displaying Haudenosaunee culture. Melanie Gates (Class of 2016) and Olivia White (Class of 2017) were selected to participate in the 10th Annual Global Mural Conference held in Rochester, NY this past September.
The 16’ x 7’ mural was created to display Haudenosaunee culture. In this artwork, the students portrayed how traditional aspects of their culture have become more modern. The concept of the piece is to show how traditional aspects of Haudenosaunee culture have become more modern while maintaining its common characteristics. One such contemporary feature of the mural is represented by a woman smoke dancing, something that has traditionally been a men’s dance. Another example is the four girls playing lacrosse. Historically, the game of lacrosse was used as a way to resolve conflicts between tribes without going to war, and only men were allowed to participate. The girls even incorporated images of their fellow Lake Shore High School lacrosse teammates from the 2016 sectional championship team!
The mural was featured during the 2016 Global Mural Conference in a temporary display and will now be permanently installed on a building along the Erie Canal as part of the Erie Canal Heritage Mural Expo. Melanie and Olivia hope it expands an awareness of Native American art, culture, laws, and sovereignty, especially in Western New York.

Warm the Children is neighbors helping neighbors. Run by the Rotary Club of Hamburg, the program purchases new, warm winter clothing and footwear for needy area children. How Are Needy Families Identified?
Area public school staff, local social service agencies and churches identify families and pass on contact information to the Rotary Club of Hamburg volunteer coordinator.

On Thursday, November 10th, Newell - Faulkner American Legion Post 880 Honor Guard came to Southtowns Catholic School to celebrate Veterans Day. With all the students, faculty & families in the gym, the Post talked about what Veterans Day is and answered questions. The school sang the Star Spangled Banner as Richard Casseri played the saxophone. He also played a medley of military songs and asked everyone to stand if they had someone who is in or served in each branch. During the day, Veterans joined their family member for lunch at school. SCS celebrates Fire Prevention Week On Thursday, October 13th. Southtowns Catholic School was invited to The Lake View Fire Station #1 on Lakeview Rd. The kids gathered around the firemen as they asked if everyone had a plan to get out of their homes in case of a fire. The firemen reminded the kids never to hide, don't play with matches and make sure you have a safe meeting place in case of a fire. As the kids were headed back to school, they were treated with gift bags that had fire prevention magnets, fire prevention kits and activity cards. A very special thank you to all the Firemen & Firewomen for what you do for our community.

Boys & Girls Club Hosts
Successful Presidential Election
On Tuesday November 8th, as adults throughout the nation headed out to the polls, the members of the Boys & Girls Club also got to cast their own votes in the first-ever Presidential Election held at the Club! Nearly all members partook in a blind election to help them remove bias from their selection and to understand and appreciate how to make an informed decision. Each member that participated completed a questionnaire made up of 10 topics/issues related to the election. The kids then evaluated which candidate each of their answers aligned with (Candidate A or B). By the end, the kids were able to vote for a candidate by tallying the issues to see which one they agreed with more overall. The kids did not find out who they actually voted for until the identities of Candidate A and B were revealed on Wednesday. The results of our election were shared with them as well, along with where the majority of the Club voters stood on each individual issue. At the end of the day, the kids did a fantastic job and really got a kick out of the entire experience, while also being enlightened by the importance of voting in our country!
