PURSUANT TO SECTION IV OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE SENECA NATION OF INDIANS, NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT THE BIENNIAL GENERAL ELECTION OF THE SENECA NATION OF INDIANS WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2016.
Pursuant to Section I of the Constitution of the Seneca Nation of Indians, “on or before the 15th day preceding the biennial election, all candidates shall file with the Clerk of the Nation their name and office, and no further candidate shall be allowed to file for office after the 15th day preceding the biennial election, except in case of death, substitution will be permitted on party tickets so filed.”
Therefore, candidates must file with the Clerk of the Nation at the Seneca Allegany Administration Building (SAAB), Allegany Territory, no later than 12:00 Midnight on Monday, October 17, 2016.
Voting shall take place at the Allegany and Cattaraugus Territories. Polls shall be open from 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, November 1, 2016.

Brant Farnham Historical Society Collects Signatures on the Farnham Elementary School Photos
As a project for our historical society and in preparation for Farnham’s 125th Anniversary, we have been collecting Farnham School alumni signatures on two photos. We have a photo of the “wooden” Farnham School, a beautiful building built in 1892 but destroyed by a fire in 1946, and a photo of the more “modern” Farnham School (1948-1977), which was built to replace the school that burned. This “modern” school no longer in use, was demolished in 2013. Both Farnham Elementary (Grammar) Schools were located where the Dollar General stands today. Representing the Brant- Farnham Historical Society, on the 27th of September I was honored to pay a visit to our oldest Town of Brant citizen - Mr. Angelo S. Militello Jr. The initial purpose of my visit was to request that he sign the mat of the historical society’s framed photo of the “wooden” Farnham School.
Angelo was 6 years of age when his family moved from Buffalo, N.Y. to Farnham, N.Y. He attended the “wooden” Farnham school for grades 1-8, graduating from the 8th grade in 1932. Upon graduation he had the choice of attending Angola High School or Silver Creek High School. He chose Silver Creek. What is interesting to note is that in order to attend the high school - he (along with the other students) traveled to and from high school by train! He boarded the train at the railroad train station on Railroad Avenue in Farnham, and arrived at the railroad train station in Silver Creek, N.Y. (Once located near where Tops is today). From there, he would walk to the High School which was (and the building still is, although since closed) located on Main Street. He of course reversed the trip to come home.
82 years ago, Angelo married the beautiful Mary Falzone who was born in Farnham, in the house at the corner of Detroit and Perry Streets. Mary had also attended the ”wooden” Farnham School and Silver Creek High School. Sadly, Mary passed away in October 2006. Together, Mary and Angelo had three children, Mary Ann (Ball), Larry, and Cindy (Miller), and each were able to visit with me this day as well. I was excited to learn that Mary Ann attended the “wooden” Farnham School just as her father and mother once had. She recalled that the wooden school burned when she was in the 5th grade. In 1948, Mary Ann graduated from the “modern” Farnham School, although she never actually attended classes in the new building. Classes were held elsewhere until the construction was completed. She was a student in the last graduating 8th grade class from the “modern” Farnham School and she was pleased to be able to sign both photos. Larry and Cindy, both attended the “modern” Farnham School and were happy to sign as well! Larry was a student in the last graduating 6th grade class of the “modern” Farnham School. Today “Ange” is 98 years old, and will be turning 99 in this coming December! He was honored at this year’s Brant Summer Festival for being our Oldest Citizen in Brant, N.Y. He has wealth of knowledge regarding Farnham and Brant’s community life and the multitude of businesses that once inhabited the village of Farnham through the years. The rest of our visit was spent with various reminisces about how Brant and Farnham used to be, sprinkled with the many interesting stories of Ange’s life and his countless accomplishments. He has enjoyed a remarkable life and has a terrific memory. The time flew by! I look forward to stopping over again as there is still so much to learn about the history of the Farnham community, of which Ange and his family played key roles. The Brant-Farnham Historical Society is grateful to have gathered signatures from Mr. Angelo S. Militello Jr. and all his children, and I am grateful for their welcoming hospitality. The Brant Farnham Historical Society now has seven names on the mat of the “wooden” Farnham school photo and we look forward to adding many more!

(Evans, NY) - 9/ 28/16 This year the Evans Center Volunteer Fire Company (VFC) has launched a community engagement campaign entitled 'Don't Wait, Check the Date’ to kick off the 2016 Fire Prevention Week. "The theme of Fire Prevention Week this year is a "selfie challenge" designed to engage members of our community using social media," says Chief J. Kleese. "Smoke alarms don't last forever. So we challenge our community members to take a "selfie" of their family checking the expiration date of their smoke alarms and post it on the Evans Center VFC Facebook or Twitter page to show everyone your alarm is up to date." A winner will then be selected on October 8th at the Fire Prevention Open House. The prize will be a pair of movie tickets and concession gift certificates to the New Angola Theater. Also a $10.00 gas card to Sunoco.
Smoke alarms wear out over time and need to be replaced within the time frame indicated by the manufacturer, which is usually 10 years. While smoke alarms typically last 10 years, some have different expiration time frames. We encourage everyone to check the manufacturer’s instructions for the expiration time frame of your smoke alarms. The date to look for is printed on the back of the smoke alarm.
The Evans Center VFC also reminds everyone that smoke alarms are required on every story of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Smoke alarms should be tested on a monthly basis by pushing the test button on the alarm. Batteries should be replaced at least once a year or when the alarm's low battery signal begins to chirp.
In addition to the 'Don't Wait, Check the Date' campaign, The Evans Center Vol. Fire Co. is hosting a fire prevention open house and chicken BBQ at the Erie Road firehouse located at 8298 Erie Road Angola NY on October 8th, 2016 from 10 am till 2pm in support of Fire Prevention Week.
Those that attend the open house will be welcome to tour our facilities and apparatus and also review the equipment. In addition, there will be several stations set up. The first station will be the 'Welcome Station" where participants will receive their station info and a chance for the door prizes. After the welcome station, there will be several other stations to choose from. "Stop, Drop, Rock & Roll", "Get Out and Stay Out!", "Put It Out!", "Gear Up!", "Try It Out!" and finally the "Sign-Up" station.
Throughout the event there will be firefighters on hand to share information on the flexible memberships Evans Center offers and to answer any questions that you may have. Free car seat checks will also be done throughout the day by certified personnel. If you are unsure about if your current car seat is still good to use or if you just want to make sure that it is installed properly, stop on down. And before you leave, don't forget about our chicken BBQ. Meals will be served starting at 11am.

Great Lakes Beach Sweep
September 17, 2016
The local GrandView Bay volunteers dodged raindrops 9-17-16 while working their "beach clean-up" assignments here in Grandview Bay!! Their valuable time and dedication to this worthwhile cause was greatly appreciated as our community works to maintain the beauty of our beaches and priceless GVB coastline! Additional teams worked the cleanup of the following local beaches: Sturgeon Point, Wendt Park, Roat Acres, Cradle Beach, Wendt Rd, Bennett, Lake Erie Beach and Evangola.
The event, which is designed to clean up shorelines of various man-made refuse, was held from 10AM- Noon. Lake Erie Coordinator Sharon Trembath led volunteers cleaning up waste from area shorelines from Westfield to Woodlawn State Park in Hamburg. It was the 31st year that the Great Lakes Beach Sweep has joined forces with the International Coastal Cleanup. Many thanks to ALL!

Students Learn the Important Lesson of the Internet Footprint
The eighth grade students at SS. Peter & Paul School in Hamburg are learning about leaving a digital footprint online. They had to read through online posts of two different applicants to host a television show and decide who was the best one. They got to see when you post something online, it leaves a print and anyone can find it. Lake Shore Middle School Teacher Inducted in Western
New York Baseball Hall of Fame
On Wednesday, September 14th, Lake Shore Middle School Social Studies teacher, Robert Kowal, was inducted into the Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame. Bob was a high school coach for four years at Maryvale from 1987-1990. His dedication won him and his team titles in ‘88, ‘89, and ‘90 and a sectional championship title in 1990. His love of the game continued at Lake Shore where he continued his 23 year-long varsity career and coached countless hours to hundreds of players.

Grandparents were invited to a special Mass & breakfast on September 16 at Southtowns Catholic School. The students sat with their families at a special Mass that celebrated grandparents. After, everyone was invited to the gym to enjoy a continental breakfast. This is a very special tradition at SCS that we look forward to every year. We love our Grandparents at SCS. Wolf Earns Deans Scholarship at Baldwin Wallace University
Catherine Wolf of Derby was among more than 400 firstyear students welcomed to the Baldwin Wallace University campus this fall who claimed $5.2 million dollars in merit scholarships. Wolf, a graduate of Lake Shore Central Sr. High School, earned an $11,000 Deans Scholarship based on outstanding academic achievements in high school. BW's merit scholarships are awarded to full-time students and are renewable up to four years with good academic and social standing. BW grants a wide range of scholarships to current students each year. Including merit and needbased scholarships, BW students received over $41 million in financial support from the University for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Boys and Girls Club Members of the Month
The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Shore is proud to announce Lily Golden and Brayden Fitzpatrick as September’s Members of the Month. Club Staff select members that have positive character values, are respectful, responsible, caring, and good citizens. The MOTM should also participate in various Club programs such as sports, games, arts & crafts, power hour, project learn, cooking club, club council, library and nature clubs, etc.
Lily is in her first year at the Club and has made quite a fond impression right off the bat. She has a great overall personality, is nice to other members, and is very helpful. She is a sixth grader at Lake Shore Middle School, Mrs. Evans is her favorite teacher, and she really likes math class. At the Club, Lily most enjoys working at the Snack Shack and helping out. In her spare time, Lily loves spending time and playing with her best friends. Her favorite book is Small as an Elephant by Jennifer Jacobson, and her favorite type of music is pop. Lily’s top role model is her mom, and when she grows up she would like to be a teacher.
Brayden is in fifth grade at J.T. Waugh Elementary where he likes math class and Mr. Hornberger is his favorite teacher. His absolute favorite spot in the Club is the gym where he likes to play a variety of games and sports. Brayden has matured significantly during his time at the Club and has become quite the role model for other members to emulate. He’s also shown many signs of being a good older brother in watching out for his sister. In his free time, Brayden likes to hang out with his friends. Brayden’s favorite book is Diary of a Wimpy Kid and his top music artist is The Weeknd. Brayden’s role model is his mom, in particular because she offers him lots of support when he plays sports. When he gets older he’d like to be a math teacher.
Corsignana is the Club’s Student of the Month. Corsi is very good about getting all of her school work done when she attends the Club, but she still leaves herself plenty of time to enjoy the Club’s other activities on a daily basis. Corsi has proven to be very studious and diligent, and racks up plenty of homework points for completing assignments. She enjoys working at the Snack Shack as a Jr. Staff too. Her favorite thing to do at home is jump on her trampoline. Corsi attends Lake Shore Middle School, she is in sixth grade, Mr. Gizzi is her favorite teacher, and she loves math class. Corsi loves all different kinds of music, her favorite book is Girl Stolen by April Henry, her role models are her mom and her friends, and when she grows up she would like to be a teacher.

The pink ribbon has been synonymous with breast cancer for years. Nowadays, people rarely think twice when they see pink ribbons, having grown accustomed to the pink ribbon and what it symbolizes.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been celebrated each year since 1985, and many other breast cancer awareness initiatives have been devised since then. While the pink ribbon may seem like it's been in use for just as long, it was actually established only about 20 years ago.
Ribbons have long symbolized something important. For decades, yellow ribbons have been used to alert others to soldiers at war or hostages that hadn't yet come home. People often tie yellow ribbons around trees at home until their service men and women came home safely. During the height of HIV/AIDS activism and awareness, red ribbons were worn to symbolize support for those with the disease.
Although the pink ribbon evolved because pink expresses femininity, calm, health, and youth, the first breast cancer ribbon was actually peach. Charlotte Haley is credited with devising the first breast cancer ribbon in 1992. She was a breast cancer survivor and came from a family of women who also fought the disease. She created peachcolored loops at home and then distributed the ribbons at her local grocery stores. Haley encouraged people to wear the ribbons and contact legislators to demand more funding for breast cancer research. An attached note was distributed with the ribbons stating, "The National Cancer Institute annual budget is $1.8 billion, only 5 percent goes for cancer prevention. Help us wake up our legislators and America by wearing this ribbon."
The same year Evelyn Lauder, senior corporate vice president for the Estee Lauder company, and Self magazine editor Alexandra Penney teamed up to produce a pink ribbon. It was distributed at makeup counters all across the country. The company collected more than 200,000 pink ribbon petitions asking the U.S. government for increased funding for breast cancer research.
Although Lauder and Haley reached people on different levels, their goals were the same: To educate the public on the lack of funds allotted to breast cancer research. Pink ribbons are now seen all over and have become the uniting force for millions of women who are facing breast cancer or supporting someone with the disease. In 1996, Nancy Nick created a blue-and-pink ribbon to symbolize male breast cancer ribbons in honor of her late father. The ribbons remind others that breast cancer can affect men as well as women.
Although you can see waves of pink every October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many people don their ribbons year-round. Great strides have been made with respect to breast cancer, but with about 225,000 new cases popping up each year in the United States alone, there is still work to be done.
