Line up for the parade will be at the Angola Fire Hall grounds at 41 Commercial Street at 9:30 AM. The Parade will start at 10:00 AM. We will march to the Forest Avenue Cemetery for special services and then back to the Angola Fire Hall grounds at 41 Commercial Street. Rural Transit Service Recognizes Dedicated Volunteers

On Wednesday, April 20rd Rural Transit Service recognized over 130 volunteers at their annual luncheon held at Michaels in Hamburg.

Rural Transit Service is a non-proﬁt transportation service that operates in many towns/villages throughout Erie County. They service the elderly, disabled and low/moderate income residents. Their service provides transportation for medical, grocery shopping, banking and personal business trips, with medical taking priority.

Transportation has become a serious problem for many citizens throughout Erie County. As families move away and independence becomes a greater challenge for seniors and with increasing transportation costs, the need for Rural Transit Service arises. Rural Transit Service gives independence, companionship, and security to their riders.

Lake Shore Middle School Students Meet Best-Selling Author

The Lake Shore Middle School sixth-grade Library Skills classes used Skype to connect with author Tim Green. Students read his book, Unstoppable, in class and then had an opportunity to talk with him. Tim Green is an athlete, author, and lawyer. After playing college football for Syracuse University, Tim was a ﬁrst-round draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons and one of their top defensive players for a span of eight seasons. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Tim has written over 30 books for adults and children, many of which have made the New York Times bestseller list. He has two series of young adult novels set in the sports of football and baseball. During our Skype session, Tim announced his most recent work that will be hitting bookshelves soon. He encourages students to get a good education, read more and have good character. Students asked him what advice he would give to kids who want to play pro sports.

“I’ll tell you what I tell my own kids,” said Green. “The most important thing is to be a good and kind person. That’s true success and with it comes relationships with wonderful people you love. Next, education is critical, go as far and as high as you can. I urge my kids to get graduate degrees, not just college. Make sure you focus on both of those things ﬁrst, and then devote yourself to lifting, running and out-working everyone around you in sports. Realize though that to make it to the NFL requires more than just talent and hard work. It takes luck. You have to be at the right place with the right coaches and teammates and stay healthy.”

Tim also gave students a homework assignment: to ﬁnd someone diﬀerent than them, perhaps someone they haven’t met before and go out of the way to do something kind for that other person. Students were excited to meet Tim Green and enjoyed visiting with him. It is a rare opportunity when you read a book and then get a chance to interact with the author and ask him questions about the book through a live video conference. It was a great experience for all classes and for students to share what they learned with others.

Emerson College Announces Local Dean's List Honorees

The following local residents have been named to Emerson College's Dean's List for the spring 2016 semester. The requirement to make the Dean's List is a grade point average of 3.7 or higher.

Middle School Art Club Participates in International Project

The Lake Shore Middle School Art Club recently joined forces with Technology Integration to facilitate an International Project through Minecraft Edu. After connecting with educator and CoderDojo Club Champion Marco Vigelini from Instituto Comprensivo Di Allumieri in Italy, Computer Lab 328 was setup with Creatubbles and el Futurum Minecraft Mods to allow for this global collaboration. Students were able to bring their creativity and artwork into the virtual world of Minecraft. Participating schools connected during their school day in their respective time zones and were tasked with virtually building a representation of their communities and cultures.

“The aim is to show our children that other young people in the world, who may even come from a diﬀerent culture or social class, are nevertheless all related by creativity,” said Mr. Vigelini. “They have a way of sharing with each other the beauty of the places in which they live, by showing through art, what their countries or cities look like.”

The students built a giant LS emerald block model to represent school letters, a virtual model of Niagara Falls including a switch that turned water flow on and off, a wampum belt, an American flag, a bounce house, a pixel art bald eagle to represent our national animal and school mascot, rainbow beacons, and a replica of Lake Erie covered in ice to represent our location and winter season.

Students also used iPads to capture their created physical artwork to import into the virtual worlds and added portraits to an online replica of the Louvre Museum for students around the globe to view. The portraits were placed alongside artwork from schools in Vancouver, Canada and Sydney, Australia.

To date, the project has included schools from Canada, China, USA (Colorado, Nebraska, Minnesota, North Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, Hawaii), Brazil, Switzerland, Pakistan, Japan, Australia, Poland, Croatia, Nigeria, Italy and South Africa. It is an excellent example of collaboration and educational exchange between students. Overall it was an enjoyable experience of creating, sharing and learning.

Lake Shore Middle School is happy to be the ﬁrst school from New York State to take part in this project. We hope that it continues to build curiosity and creativity in students, lasting well beyond this project.

Samantha Demmerley Graduates from Heidelberg University

Samantha Demmerley of Derby, N.Y., graduated Cum Laude May15 from Heidelberg University. Demmerley received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education.

President Robert H. Huntington presented diplomas to 235 seniors and an additional 38 graduate students, who received master's degrees in counseling, education, business administration and music education.

Students Stay Active

This year at the J. T. Waugh Elementary School, students have been keeping active to live a healthy lifestyle. Students have participated in the district’s “Be the Best You” initiative as well as the NFL’s Play 60 initiative and recently went to the South town’s YMCA in West Seneca. While there, student’s from Mrs. Dinkuhn’s, Mrs. Mion’s, and Mr. Renzo’s classes engaged in numerous physical activities.

The classes rotated through three stations where they played hockey and basketball in the gym, swam in the pool, and ran around the course in the adventure room. Students enjoyed working together in the team activities and highly recommended this type of ﬁeld trip in the future.

High School Show Choir Takes Top Honors At Darien Lake Festival

Earlier this May, the Lake Shore High School Show Choir competed in the Darien Lake Music Festival. The group achieved the highest rating of "Outstanding with Distinction" or “Gold with Distinction” with a score of 99/100, and was awarded First Place in the Show Choir division. They also received the Grand Judges’ Trophy that is awarded to the best musical group at the performance site. Boys & Girls Club Announces “Rising Star”

We here at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Shore would like to congratulate Aidan Cohen on his tremendous accomplishment of being nominated as a Junior Youth of the Year (Rising Star) candidate. The Club staff deliberate and select a nominee that they feel is worthy of the accolade. The regional program, part of the WNY Collaborative of Boys & Girls Clubs, involves candidates completing an application and being judged on their character, service, and leadership at home, community, Club, and school. The nominees from area Clubs were invited to attend a day of leadership activities and games on April 30th, hosted by the WNY Collaborative. Aidan had a great time meeting new people from other Clubs, and thoroughly enjoyed partaking in the activities. He also attended an awards luncheon and ceremony on May 7th at Michael’s Banquet Hall. He was very proud to be honored, even arriving at the Club sporting the personalized medal he received! Aidan is in his fourth year with the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Shore and has been a model member. He is currently in sixth grade at Lake Shore Middle School. Aidan is a member of our Junior Staff team at the Club, which entails working the Snack Shack and assisting staff in miscellaneous chores and running daily activities. Junior Staff must complete applications and go through an interview process by Club staff in order to be hired. Aidan is by far one of our most reliable Junior Staff, and he often takes responsibilities upon himself without being asked. He is a tremendous help around the Club, not only with handling tasks, but also with assisting in overseeing some of the other younger members and is very diligent in reporting to staff about any issues that may need to be addressed. Aidan looks out for other members, is always friendly, and truly demonstrates his passion and dedication for the Club as a whole. Aidan has proven himself to be very trustworthy and honest, which are qualities we try to instill in all members. The staff of the Lake Shore Club consistently point to Aidan for other kids to emulate his exemplary behavior.

All of us here at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Shore Club are extremely proud of this wonderful young man and we are pleased to have him represent our unit as he embodies all that we stand for and strive to achieve!
