The Parade Float for Rotary International From the Old Photo Album
About thirteen years ago, town of Brant resident and business owner John J. Chiavetta donated this photo to the historical society. He told us that the fifth person from the left is his uncle Joseph H. Chiavetta (1909-1988). The words “Rotary International” are written on the wheel above the bell on the float. According to Wikipedia “Rotary International is an international service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian service and to advance goodwill and peace around the world. It is a non-political and non-religious organization open to all.”
At this time, we don’t know for sure if the photo was taken for one of the Brant Strawberry Festivals, the 125th Anniversary celebration for the town of Brant (in the year of 1964) or another festive occasion. We will keep investigating for further details!

Gabrielle Tartick, a resident of Derby, NY, was among 217 students from Genesee Community College, including all six campus locations in Batavia, Arcade, Dansville, Lima, Medina and Warsaw, who were named to the President's List for the Spring 2025 semester.
Students honored on the President's List have maintained full-time enrollment and earned a quality point index of 3.75 (roughly equivalent to an A) or better.
Genesee Community College serves over 6,000 students per semester through more than 70 academic programs and certificates, including the new Marketing and Social Media concentration within the Business Administration program, and the new Nanotechnology degree with ECC. Marker Dedicated at Cash Cemetery Honoring Early Evans Settlers
Private Ceremony Recognizes Pomeroy Foundation Grant and Local Support for Cemetery Preservation EVANS, NY (July 25, 2025) — A private ceremony was held Friday, July 25, 2025, to dedicate a New York State Historic Marker at Cash Cemetery, one of the oldest burial grounds in the Town of Evans. The event honored the early Cash family settlers and celebrated renewed efforts to protect and preserve the site for future generations.
Located on land purchased by the Cash family as early as 1812 from the Holland Land Company, the cemetery contains burials dating back to 1833. The historic marker was made possible through a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation®, the nation’s leading funder of historical markers, with over 2,800 awarded nationwide.
“This land has held our family’s stories for over two centuries,” said Linda Sorrento, a 6th-generation descendant of William Cash Sr. and Sarah Parks Cash. “It’s a powerful moment to honor the past while ensuring that future generations remember the people who built this community. We’re especially grateful for the Town of Evans and the Evans Historical Society for their continued support in preserving this sacred place.”
The program featured remarks from descendants and civic leaders, including:
• Craig Lasher, descendant of Whiting Cash (1792 – 1867), a War of 1812 Veteran, who welcomed attendees and ac knowledged the grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.
• Mrs. Jen Mazur, Pastor, First Congregational UCC, who led the invocation.
• Linda Sorrento, descendant of William Cash, Jr. (1800 – 1845), who provided a history of the Cash Cemetery.
• John Wilson, Deputy Supervisor of the Town of Evans, who issued an official Town Proclamation honoring the site.
• Kathy Allen, President of the Town of Evans Historical Society, who shared the cemetery’s broader historical context.
“This historic marker is a visible and lasting way to honor the legacy of those buried here,” said Craig Lasher. “We’re deeply thankful to the William G. Pomeroy Foundation for making this possible and for their commitment to preserving local history across the country.”
The preservation project was supported by funding contributions from descendants of the Cash family, the Evans Historical Society, the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and the National Society United States Daughters of 1812, along with ongoing maintenance and stewardship by the Town of Evans
