1915 April - A fire destroyed the Fort Stanwix Canning Company of Farnham, N.Y.
Part 2 of a 2-part story
As mentioned previously in part 1 of our story; On a 1909 map of Farnham, N.Y. we find the United States Canning Company located on Erie Street (today referred to as Railroad Avenue) in Farnham, New York. This canning company later became the Fort Stanwix Canning Company.
A Silver Creek News article (issue dated Thursday, April 13, 1915) provided details of the fire of 1915: “The big plant of Fort Stanwix Canning Company was destroyed by fire, with a loss to the building and contents. The fire was discovered at 9:30 in the evening and the flames at that time had gained considerable progress. Despite the efforts of the firemen they were unable to check the fire and much difficulty was experienced in keeping adjacent buildings from catching fire. Four telegraph poles near the building also were burned.
The building was a three-story frame structure. It was burned to the ground. How the fire started has not been determined.
This is the second plant of this kind to be destroyed by fire in Farnham, a big canning factory having been destroyed about fifteen years ago.
The Ft. Stanwix people say their total loss on buildings and stock is $100,000, fully insured. They will not rebuild this season, but will handle all acreage contracts for Farnham at the Irving plant, except tomatoes. It is necessary to cancel all Farnham tomatoe [sp] contracts. A [pea] vining station will be built at Farnham and peas will be received there as usual, the canning being done at Irving.”

PROPOSITION NO. 1
Shall the following resolution be adopted:
RESOLVED, that the budget for the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District for the fiscal year commencing July 1, 2026, and ending June 30, 2027, as presented by the Board of Education in the amount of $69,350,011 is hereby approved and adopted and the required funds therefore are hereby appropriated and the necessary real property taxes required shall be raised by a tax on the taxable property in the District to be levied and collected as required by law. Adoption of this budget requires an anticipated 1.46% property tax increase, which does not exceed the statutory tax levy increase limit of 1.46%.
PROPOSITION NO. 2
Shall the following resolution be adopted:
RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District (the “District”) is hereby authorized to purchase the following replacement vehicles for use by the District in the transportation of students and general use by the District: one (1) 7-passenger gasoline SUV at an estimated cost of $38,450; one (1) 30-passenger gasoline school bus at an estimated cost of $125,563.81; one (1) 24-passenger gasoline school bus with five (5) wheelchair positions at an estimated cost of $147,209.20; and one (1) medium-duty truck with a snowplow and salt spreader at an estimated cost not to exceed $180,000; for a total aggregate maximum estimated cost of $491,223.01; with such aggregate cost to be raised by a tax upon the taxable property of the District to be levied and collected in annual installments as provided in Section 416 of the Education Law, with such tax to be partially offset by State aid available therefore, and, in anticipation of such tax, by the issuance of debt obligations of the District as may be necessary, not to exceed such maximum aggregate cost. No tax levy increase is anticipated for Proposition No. 2.
TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that applications for absentee ballots and applications for early mail ballot may be obtained Monday through Friday, except holidays, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in the District Clerk’s Office located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York. Looking Back at 1970

A Buffalo Evening News article (dated May 9, 1970), written by Sue Buyer, highlighted a few of the stores once found on Main Street in the Village of Angola in the year of 1970. In her story, she likened the stores found in the village to the home-town stores found in the movies of the 1930s and 1940s.
In 1970, Sue was able to interview Herbert W. Shultz who had started in the family hardware store almost 40 years earlier, by helping his dad. Herb’s father had taken over the business from Herb’s granduncle. His granduncle had purchased the shop way back in 1865.
Herb had told Sue; “We get a lot of repeat business. In a small town you have to. We give an awful lot of advice and we give one-day service on appliances. And before we sell a lawnmower, we test it first.”
He also stated “we have plumbers working here. One’s been here 40 years, one, 34, but sometimes they’re busy. People have to have the job done immediately, so we have equipment with which we can cut and thread pipe for customers while they wait.
I’m here 50 hours a week but I get calls at home, nights and Sundays, from the town or the village, the Thruway restaurant or the canning factories. If I’ve got what they want, I can take care of them.”
Herb also mentioned that he had always had teenage boys helping him in the store, but the new $1.85 per hour minimum wage, will make it hard to keep them on.

Holly Mann Named to Goodwin University's Dean's List, Fall ‘25
Holly Mann has earned a spot on Goodwin University's Dean's List for the fall 2025 semester.
Holly, a student from Lake View, is one of 499 students to make the Dean's List, reserved for those who demonstrate exemplary academic performance. Dean's List inclusion requires a student to earn a minimum 3.5 GPA, the equivalent of an A- average, during a given academic session. The student must also be enrolled in a minimum of six academic credits to qualify.

Lake Shore CSD Leads Regional Coalition at “Beyond the Breach” Cyber Conference
District Hosts Superintendents and Data Leaders to Stress-Test K-12 Security Governance
Data privacy is no longer just a technical concern for the I.T. department; it is a critical matter of district governance and continuity. On May 1, 2026, Lake Shore Central School District stood at the forefront of this shift, hosting the "Beyond the Breach" Cyber Governance Conference at Seneca One in Buffalo. The summit brought together a regional powerhouse of superintendents, technology professionals, and data leaders to move districts from passive compliance to active accountability.
The day focused heavily on the upcoming transition to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) 2.0, a standard mandated for New York State school districts by the start of the 2026-27 school year. Led by Lake Shore District Data Protection Officer Michelle Krieger, attendees engaged in high-stakes tabletop simulations designed to stress-test response plans against realistic scenarios, including unencrypted data leaks and business email compromises. These "stress tests" allowed regional leaders to identify critical gaps in policy and communication before they manifest as a real-world crisis.
“Cybersecurity is an organizational mission that requires every department to be at the table,” said Michelle Krieger, Lake Shore Data Protection Officer. “By bringing our regional peers together at Seneca One, we are ensuring that our leadership teams are prepared, proactive, and rooted in a culture of readiness. Protecting our student-athletes and students starts with a secure foundation.”
The event featured a specialized panel of industry experts, including Antoinette King (Credo Cyber Consulting), Scott Morris (The Beckage Firm), and Randy Glenn (Gallagher Insurance). These professionals provided high-level insight into the intersection of physical safety, legal privilege, and the rigorous requirements of the K-12 insurance market.
Lake Shore Central School District plans to make this summit an annual tradition, fostering a regional network of collaboration to stay ahead of emerging digital threats.
