Lake Shore Eagles Raise Over $19,000 as "Bald for Bucks" Returns to Its Roots
Celebrates 24 years of the movement that started in Lake Shore Lake Shore spirit was on full display today at J.T. Waugh Elementary as students, staff, and community members gathered for the 24th annual Bald for Bucks event. In a powerful demonstration of community and courage, participants shaved their heads, cut their hair for donation, or added festive tinsel and dye to raise $19,092—and counting—for cancer research at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. What began nearly a quarter-century ago as a single promise within these school walls has once again united the entire District in the fight against cancer.
The event honors a legacy that started in 2002, when Lake Shore teacher Tony George promised his sister, Cathleen, that he would go bald until her hair grew back following her treatments. That personal act of solidarity sparked a studentled movement that has since transformed Lake Shore into the headquarters for a global fundraising phenomenon. Today’s "Big Shave" at J.T. Waugh saw a new generation of Eagles take the pledge, supported by local survivors and families who were cheered on by the student body and a visiting crew from Channel 2 News.
“Seeing our students stand up with such bravery reminds us that the Lake Shore experience is about so much more than what happens in the classroom,” said Lake Shore Superintendent Phil Johnson.. “This tradition is woven into the very fabric of our town. Whether it’s a student shaving their head for the first time or a staff member who has participated for twenty years, it’s about showing our neighbors that they never have to walk a difficult path alone. We are incredibly proud of our Eagles for their heart and their leadership.”
While the clippers have finished their work for the day, the District’s fundraising efforts continue as they push toward a $20,000 goal. NOTICE OF ANNUAL SCHOOL BUDGET MEETING BUDGET REFERENDUM AND ELECTION
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual School Budget Meeting (Public Hearing) for qualified district residents will be held in the Lake Shore High School Library Media Center, 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at 7:00 p.m.
FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual School Budget Referendum and Election for (1) approval of the Annual School District Budget for the 2026-27 School Year; (2) voting on a proposition regarding the purchase of replacement vehicles; (3) the election of two qualified district residents to the office of Member of the Board of Education; and (4) for the transaction of such other business as is authorized by law, will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., in the Lobby located outside the District Office/Gymnasium of the Lake Shore High School located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York 14006.
TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that a copy of the statement of the amount of money which will be required for the 2026-27 fiscal year for school purposes, exclusive of public monies, may be obtained by any District resident beginning May 5, 2026 through and including May 19, 2026, excluding weekends and holidays, in the main office of each school building between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that all candidates for the office of Member of the Board of Education shall be nominated by petition. Each nominating petition shall be directed to the District Clerk, shall be signed by at least twenty-five (25) qualified voters of the District, and shall state the residence of each signer, and shall state the name and residence of the candidate. Petitions shall be filed in the District Clerk’s Office located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday except Holidays. Each petition must be filed in the District Clerk’s Office by no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2026. The two candidates who receive the highest number of votes at the Annual Meeting will fill the expired terms of the two incumbents and will serve on the Board of Education for three-year terms to commence on July 1, 2026 and expire June 30, 2029.
TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that voting will consist of voting on the budget and on the following propositions, as well as other such matters as may be lawfully presented at the meeting:
PROPOSITION NO. 1
Shall the following resolution be adopted:
RESOLVED, that the budget for the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District for the fiscal year commencing July 1, 2026, and ending June 30, 2027, as presented by the Board of Education is hereby approved and adopted and the required funds therefore are hereby appropriated and the necessary real property taxes required shall be raised by a tax on the taxable property in the District to be levied and collected as required by law.
PROPOSITION NO. 2
Shall the following resolution be adopted:
RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District (the “District”) is hereby authorized to purchase the following replacement vehicles for use by the District in the transportation of students and general use by the District: one (1) 7-passenger gasoline SUV at an estimated cost of $38,450; one (1) 30-passenger gasoline school bus at an estimated cost of $125,563.81; one (1) 24-passenger gasoline school bus with five (5) wheelchair positions at an estimated cost of $147,209.20; and one (1) medium-duty truck with a snowplow and salt spreader at an estimated cost not to exceed $180,000; for a total aggregate maximum estimated cost of $491,223.01; with such aggregate cost to be raised by a tax upon the taxable property of the District to be levied and collected in annual installments as provided in Section 416 of the Education Law, with such tax to be partially offset by State aid available therefore, and, in anticipation of such tax, by the issuance of debt obligations of the District as may be necessary, not to exceed such maximum aggregate cost. No tax levy increase is anticipated for Proposition No. 2.
TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that applications for absentee ballots and applications for early mail ballot may be obtained Monday through Friday, except holidays, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in the District Clerk’s Office located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York. Candidates must enter through the main entrance of the High School. Completed applications must be received by the District Clerk or her designee at least seven (7) days before the annual meeting and election (May 12, 2026) if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter or by the day before the election (May 18, 2026) if the ballot is to be issued to the voter in person. Completed absentee ballots and early mail ballots must be received by the office of the District Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on May 19, 2026.
TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that military voters who are qualified voters of the school district may apply for a military ballot. Applications for military ballots may be obtained from the District Clerk’s Office and the military voter may designate a preference to receive the application and/or the military ballot by mail, fax or email. Completed applications for military ballots must be received by the District Clerk or her designee by no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 23, 2026.
TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that a list of all persons to whom absentee and early mail ballots are issued will be available for public inspection between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in the office of the District Clerk on the five days prior to the annual meeting and election, except Sundays, and such list will be available at the polling place during the annual meeting and election. Any qualified voter may, upon examination of such list, file a written challenge of the qualifications as a voter of any person whose name appears on such list, stating the reasons for such challenge. Such written challenge shall be transmitted to the District Clerk before the close of the polls.

Main Street, Angola, NY: Looking Back at 1970 The Meat Shoppe
A Buffalo Evening News article (dated May 9, 1970), written by Sue Buyer, highlighted a few of the stores once found on Main Street in the Village of Angola in the year of 1970. In her story, she likened the stores found in the village to the home-town stores found in the movies of the 1930s and 1940s.
At that time, she met with the owner of The Meat Shoppe - Ted R. Martin to Butcher Ted R. Martin checks the signs that always cover almost every inch of window of his Main St., Angola Shop. (Buffalo Evening News, May 9, 1970)
find out his story. Ted purchased the shop six years earlier (1964). Some customers ask for his suggestions on what to serve at a special dinner. Some customers arrive by foot and buy only the meat they need for that day. He said he could set his clock by some of his customers who visit at the same time each day. Ray was an active blood and bone marrow donor. His legacy will live on through his daughter and grandchildren. He can now rest in peace and is reunited with his son Michael. James W. McMurray, 88, of Derby, NY, passed away on April 9, 2026. Born May 7th, 1937, in Hastings, PA, he was the son of the late Edward and Stella (Bradley) McMurray. James was a proud veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1960-1962. He had retired from the Ford Stamping Plant Woodlawn after 40 years of employment. He was also a life member of the Highland Hose Vol. Fire Co. He was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, hunting, and fishing over the years. Survived by his beloved wife for 65 years Carol (Rudolph) McMurray; four sons, James (Lisa), Kenneth, Dennis (Ann Godfrey), and Mark (Feliccia Harrington) McMurray; eight grandchildren, Britney (Phil Ciallela) Godfrey, Megan McMurray, Lauren McMurray, Tierney (Dylan) Paprocki, Zakary McMurray, Alexis McMurray, Alyssa McMurray, and Lacie McMurray; three greatgrandchildren, Hudson, Myla, and Bennett; brothers Ronald (late Penny), Edward (Lisa), and the late Robert McMurray. Information Regarding Applications for Absentee Ballots, Early Mail & Military Ballots
The District Clerk will automatically mail an Absentee Ballot to each voter whose registration record on file with the county board of elections is marked “permanently disabled.” All other voters must submit an application prior to obtaining an absentee ballot or early mail ballot.
Applications for Absentee Ballots and Applications for Early Mail Ballots will be available in the District Clerk’s Office beginning Tuesday, April 21, 2026 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. The District Clerk’s Office is located in the Lake Shore High School, 959 Beach Road, Angola, NY. Voters must enter through the main entrance of the High School.
Completed Applications must be received by the District Clerk at least 7 days before the election (May 12, 2026) if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election (May 18, 2026), if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter.
Absentee Ballots and Early Mail Ballots must be received by the District Clerk by 5:00 p.m. on the day of the election (May 19, 2026).
Military voters who are qualified voters of the school district may apply for a military ballot. Applications for military ballots may be obtained from the District Clerk’s Office and the military voter may designate a preference to receive the application and/or the military ballot by mail, fax or email. Completed applications for military ballots must be received by the District Clerk or her designee by no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 23, 2026.
PLEASE NOTE: All potential candidates have until April 20th to submit their petitions to appear on the May 19th ballot. Therefore, information for absentee ballots is not sent to the printer until April 21st. If you submit an application for an absentee ballot or early mail ballot, please be aware that ballots are only available after they are received from the printer. When the ballots are received, they will be promptly distributed.
