James Manning has been named to the Siena University Dean's List for the Fall 2025 semester. Manning is from Irving, NY. To be named to the Dean's List, a student's grade point average for the semester must be between 3.5 and 3.89.

A Timeline for the Town of Brant, Part 19A

1915, April - A fire destroyed the Fort Stanwix Canning Company of Farnham, N.Y. Part 1 of a 2-part story

As depicted on a 1909 map, the United States Canning Company was located on Erie Street (today referred to as Railroad Avenue) in Farnham, New York. The canning company filed for bankruptcy in 1910. In December of that year the receiver of the company sent out notices to all creditors demanding that they file claims before April 1, 1911. In our historical archives, we do have a United States Canning Company receipt, dated January 30, 1911 for $39.08 credit due to Fred Brinkman, for produce delivered in 1910. Sometime after 1911, the FORT STANWIX COMPANY took over the operations of the United States Canning Company. The company packed the same items as the other canneries in the area: peas, corn, beans, etc. A Silver Creek News article dated October 10th 1912 stated that “The Fort Stanwix Canning Company of Farnham, reports a very successful season. They expect to finish packing corn this week, and will continue to pack tomatoes until the frosts cuts them off. Their fall crop of spinach is now being received and will continue on this item for a week or ten days longer. This Company has the largest contracted acreage this year in the history of the plant, and expects to do an increased business next year. The Irving factory will be operated next year if plenty of acreage is forthcoming from the growers. The warehouses are filled and all goods are sold.”

In past conversations with some of the older Farnham residents, they remarked that they could not recall the U.S. Canning Co., but did remember the Fort Stanwix Canning Co. Picture postcards indicate that the U.S. Canning Co. and the Fort Stanwix Co. were one and the same plant. A fire destroyed the Fort Stanwix Canning Co. in April, 1915. To be continued…

Lake Shore Alumni Share Leadership Lessons with High School Students

Every month, the Lake Shore High School Leadership in Action class invites community leaders to share their experiences and advice with the next generation of leaders. In February, the class welcomed two familiar faces back to campus: retired principal Mrs. Paula Eastman and volunteer football coach Mr. Joe Pinter, Sr. Both Mrs. Eastman and Mr. Pinter, who are proud Lake Shore alumni, shared their personal defi nitions of leadership and encouraged students to remain steadfast in following their desired career paths. The session was interactive, with students asking questions and gaining insight into how leadership skills translate from the classroom to the community and the athletic fi eld. The Leadership in Action class expressed their gratitude to both guests for their time, energy, and commitment to inspiring Lake Shore’s future leaders.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday in Most Precious Blood Church, Angola, NY. Chuck was a member of the Newcomb – Long American Legion Post 928 and VFW Post 5798. He was a proud United States Army Veteran, serving in WWII. Interment services with military honors will follow in the Brant Cemetery. Flowers gratefully declined, memorials may be made to the Newcomb-Long American Legion Post 928.

Patricia S. Vogan (nee Van Duzer)

January 1, 1952 – April 1, 2026

Patricia S. Vogan (nee Van Duzer) of Derby NY entered into rest at age 74. Loving wife of 50 years to Richard A. Vogan; dearest mother of Eric and David Vogan; sister of Rosemary Van Duzer; cousin of Lynn (Wayne) Cavaliere; daughter of the late Earl and Meta Van Duzer; sister in law of Ronald and Sue Stitt and William and Valerie Vogan; also survived by several nieces and one nephew. Patricia was born and raised in Newburgh, NY, received a Bachelors of Education degree from Edinboro University and was an accomplished flautist, taking lessons at West Point. She worked as a stock analyst and savings bank support staff, and then retired from a career of nearly 20 years as a site coordinator for Meals on Wheels of WNY. Patricia was also a volunteer with the Lake Shore Soccer Association for 25 years where she managed the concessions stand. Family was present to receive friends Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at the Addison Funeral Home, Inc.

“Patsy”(nee Maska) of Angola, NY entered into rest April 1, 2026 at age 91. Wife of the late Robert H. Bergmann and Norman C. Young; loving mother of Annette (late Charlie) Manley, Amelia (Alan) Smith, Michael (Janet) Bergmann, Patricia (Frank) Booker, Lisa (David) DePasquale and Joseph (Susie) Bergmann; sister of Gordon Maska and the late Ronald Maska and Norma Bauerlein; survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. “Patsy” was an 86 year resident of Angola, she loved life, smiling, boating and golfing and is even known to have shot two “Holes in One”. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, especially the “Golden Gal’s” and was a past member of the Lake Erie Beach Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary. Family will be present to receive friends Saturday, May 16, 2026 from 10AM to 12PM at the Addison Funeral Home, Inc., where prayer services will follow at 12PM.
