(Vail) Martin; Dear Father of Linda (late Joseph) Stiles, Brenda (Michael) Schultz, Elizabeth (Daniel) Dubuque, John Martin and Ruth (Virgil) Lohrding; Grandfather of 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter; Brother of Howard (Mary Lou), the late William (Jenny), Claudia, Paul (late Madelyn), Jerry (late Beverly), Kevin (late Meiko), Dennis (Marge), John R., Wesley, Marty Martin, Kathleen "Babe" Somich and Emmy Martin. Kenneth Depovelo, age 84, passed away on March 10, 2026. He was the dear brother of the late Robert (Geraldine) Depovelo, and loving uncle of Dana Hughes and Scott Depovelo. Kenneth was also a cherished great-uncle to Dillion, Devon, and Dalton. Services were held privately at the convenience of the family. Main Street, Angola, NY Looking Back at 1970
The Angola Bakery
A Buffalo Evening News article (dated May 9, 1970), written by Sue Buyer, highlighted a few of the stores once found on Main Street in the Village of Angola in the year of 1970. In her story, she likened the stores found in the village to the home-town stores found in the movies of the 1930s and 1940s.
In the paragraph regarding the Angola Bakery, she states “The customers are all eyes as they scan the old fashioned display cases” found in the shop of Polish born baker Casey Szydlowski. She interviewed Casey, who told her that he came to America in 1960 and bought the shop in 1967.
Casey mentioned that the housewives come to the village bakery either by foot or car, but that 2:30pm is his busiest time. That is when the school children would come in with their six cents to purchase cookies for the walk home.
Mr. Syzdlowski also mentioned that he works six days a week, and begins his baking at midnight. He said that when his two older boys come home from school, they watch the baby and their mother comes in to work in the shop.
Do you recall the bakery mentioned here? It was once located across from the Angola Post Office.
