Steve Brown Named One of Only 27 "Master Counselors" in New York State

LSHS Counselor Joins Elite State Network as One of Only Two Selections from Western New York

The Lake Shore Central School District is proud to announce that Lake Shore High School counselor Steve (Edmund) Brown has been selected by Governor Kathy Hochul as a member of the inaugural cohort of the New York State Master Counselor Program. Mr. Brown is one of only 27 counselors chosen statewide and represents one of only two selections from the Western New York region.

The Master Counselor Program, modeled after the prestigious NYS Master Teacher Program established in 2013, recognizes outstanding educators who serve as leaders and mentors in their fields. Candidates underwent a rigorous application process demonstrating their dedication to student engagement, career pathways, and educational innovation.

During the February 10, 2026 Lake Shore Board of Education meeting, the District officially honored Mr. Brown with a certificate celebrating his achievement.

"This is a tremendous honor for both Mr. Brown and our entire district," said Superintendent of Schools Phil Johnson. "Being selected for the very first class of Master Counselors speaks volumes about Steve’s expertise and his commitment to the students of Lake Shore. He has long been a pillar of support in our High School, and we are thrilled to see his hard work recognized at the state level."

For Board of Education President Jennifer Michalec, the recognition is also personal. "I have seen firsthand the impact Mr. Brown has on our students. All of my children were counseled by him, and they have always spoken so highly of his guidance and support. He doesn’t just help students schedule classes; he helps them navigate their futures with confidence."

As a Master Counselor, Mr. Brown will participate in a fouryear program, engaging in peer mentoring and professional development to share best practices with counselors across New York State.

"Our goal in instruction is always to provide students with the highest level of mentorship and innovative thinking," said Melissa Bergler, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction. "There is no one more deserving of this honor than Steve. He has consistently demonstrated innovative thinking, a deep commitment to learning, and a passion for the transformative impact of school counseling. His participation in this statewide network will ensure Lake Shore remains at the forefront of counseling best practices, better preparing our students for the evolving demands of college and careers."

Reflecting on the appointment, Steve Brown noted the importance of the collaborative journey ahead. "It is a true honor to be part of this inaugural cohort. Counseling is about creating pathways for students to see their own potential, and I am excited to work with other leaders across the state to bring new ideas and strategies back to the Lake Shore community."

Lake Shore Pre-K Students Join "Outdoor Adventures" in Sphero Global Challenge

Hands-on robotics project uses "Park Ranger" theme to teach early problem-solving and computational thinking

Lake Shore Central School District Universal Pre-K students at the William T. Hoag Educational Center are proving that early coding concepts can begin at age four. As part of the Sphero Global Challenge Season 6: Outdoor Adventures, these young learners took on the "Indi: Park Ranger" challenge, a national STEM competition tailored specifically for early childhood innovators.

The project transformed the classroom into a hands-on, screen-free learning environment. Using color-based command tiles and Indi robotic vehicles, students navigated challenges inspired by three different parks from around the world. In the process, they built foundational skills in sequencing, cause-and-effect, and collaboration—even learning about environmental features like waterfalls along their robotic routes. The initiative was led by District Technology Integrator Deann Poleon in collaboration with Pre-K teacher Nicole Wegrzynowski.

“The Indi: Park Ranger level is perfect for this age group because it makes complex ideas accessible,” said Poleon. “The students surprised us every step of the way. They weren’t just playing with a robot; they were acting as innovators, testing ideas and adjusting their 'ranger gear' until they solved the challenge.”

Wegrzynowski noted the high level of engagement the themed challenge provided. “I am incredibly proud of how focused and confident they were. This experience showed how capable four-year-olds are when learning is hands-on and purposeful.”

Superintendent of Schools Phil Johnson said the project reflects the district’s approach to early learning. “Our Universal Pre-K program focuses on building curiosity and problemsolving from the very beginning. Seeing our youngest students participate in a national STEM competition like the Sphero Global Challenge shows the power of our early childhood programming.”

Christine Starks, Program Administrator and Early Learning Coordinator at the William T. Hoag Educational Center, said projects like the Sphero Indi Robotics Challenge highlight what sets Lake Shore’s Universal Pre-K program apart.

“Our Universal Pre-K classrooms are built around experiences like this,” said Starks. “We focus on helping young children think, explore, solve problems, and build confidence in their abilities. When families choose UPK at Hoag, they’re choosing a program that intentionally prepares students with the skills they need to succeed from the very start.”

Registration is currently open for Lake Shore’s 2026–27 Universal Pre-K program at the William T. Hoag Educational Center. Children must be four years old on or before December 1, 2026, and live within the Lake Shore Central School District. Families can visit lakeshorecsd.org/register for more information or call the District Registrar at (716) 926-2217 or the Hoag Educational Center at (716) 926-2480.
