Welcome Class of 2029 Students at the University at Albany
The University at Albany is welcoming students back to campus for the start of the Fall 2025 semester, including some 5,482 new Great Danes.
More than 2,801 first-year students, from 35,664 applicants, are joining UAlbany's Class of 2029, with 358 students selected to be part of the University's Honors College, and 250 students enrolled as Presidential Scholars.
In addition, more than 1,258 transfer students and 1,423 new graduate students are joining the campus community this fall.
The Class of 2029 is among the most diverse in University history, with 56.6 percent coming from historically underrepresented groups. Students also hail from 30 different states and 39 countries. The class boasts an overall high school average of 90.2 percent.

Megan Zakeri named to Baldwin Wallace University Dean's List
Megan Zakeri of Lake View, a graduate of Frontier Senior High School majoring in music education, has been named to the Dean's List for the fall 2025 semester at Baldwin Wallace University, according to Interim Provost Linda Chase. The Dean's List recognizes students who earn a grade point average of 3.8 or higher while enrolled in 12 or more graded hours during the semester.

Kindergarten Registration for the 2024-25 School Year
Children enrolling in Kindergarten in the Lake Shore Central School District as of September 2026 should register before March 6, 2026. The school district will conduct Kindergarten Registration as outlined below.
• To be enrolled in the September 2026 Kindergarten class, a child living in the Lake Shore Central School District must be five years of age on or before December 1, 2026 pursuant to §7120 of the Lake Shore CSD Policy Manual and NYS Education Department regulations.
• Proof of age is required at the time of registration. A birth certificate, baptismal record, or a passport will serve as adequate proof of age. Utility bills, unaltered driver’s license or pay stub will serve as adequate proof of residency.
• All immunizations must be acquired by the start of school in September. Students without required immunizations will not be permitted to start school.

Lorraine Jean Winters (née Beyer) passed away on January 22, 2026 at age 99. Lorraine was the daughter of Irene (Powers) and Raymond Beyer. She was born in Auburn, NY and came with them, as a child, to Gowanda, NY where she and her younger sister Beverly grew up. Lorraine was a graduate of Gowanda High School, class of 1944. She then attended the Buffalo General Hospital School of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. She eventually had a career as a school nurse/teacher at the Lake Shore Central schools. On January 17, 1948 she married Frederick W. Winters Jr and settled in Brant, NY where they had a farm. They raised their two children and had a good life. She was a longtime active member of The First Congregational Church in Angola and sang in the choir. After they retired she and Fred moved to N. Fort Myers, Fl where they lived happily for 25 years. Fred passed away in 2007 and Lorraine stayed there until returning to WNY in 2013. She lived in Orchard Park and Hamburg in her last years. She is predeceased by her husband , her parents and her sister and survived by her son Mark (Diane), her daughter, Carol (Bill) and grandchildren, Emily(Pete), Matt (Laura), Rebecca(Alex), and Anne (Joe): and great-grand children, Henrietta, Sam, Lilly and Jack. A memorial service will be held in the Spring. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of WNY. Arrangements by Addison Funeral Home, Inc.

Angola Library Board of Trustees Installation of Officers
Nominations and elections were held for the officers of the Angola Public Library Board of Trustees at the January 6th, 2026 board meeting. The elections were conducted by Village of Angola Mayor, Thomas Whelan.
Nominated and re-elected as Trustee for another 5 year term was Patty Friend.
Nominated and re-elected as President was Jack Kuebler. Nominated and re-elected as Vice President was Barb Schmitt. Nominated and re-elected as Treasurer was Mari Grennell. Nominated and re-elected as Secretary was Patty Friend. Each officer was elected unanimously by those members in attendance. Following the elections, officers were sworn in by Mayor Thomas Whelan.
A few examples of the responsibilities of the Library Board of Trustees include but are not limited to: setting policy, overseeing finances, planning for the future, and advocating for the library.
In addition to being a resource of information, the Angola Public Library has many activities/events available and plays a huge role in our local community. Through the constant support of our benefactors, patrons and visitors, the Angola Library will celebrate its 102nd year of operation in 2026!
