It is my great pleasure to present to you our 2019 Sustainability Report. This report outlines the 2022 Targets we have set for our organisation and captures the incredible results we have seen so far, remembering we are only at the beginning of our journey. As a caring organisation, Anglican Care has always demonstrated leadership in matters of social and community wellbeing. The ideal of caring lies at the very heart of our organisation and is the foundation of our long and proud history. I see our focus on sustainability as a natural progression in our caring philosophy – caring for the future. Our sustainability journey began in February 2018, when we partnered with the NSW Sustainability Advantage program. Run by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, the program helped us to understand the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how we could apply them to what we do every day. We will be working across all three pillars of sustainability – economic, social and environmental – to help improve the lives of the people we serve. We invite everyone in the Anglican Care community to join us in this journey by championing the cause of sustainability. We all have an opportunity to contribute, whether living in one of Anglican Care’s residential homes or retirement living villages, or people living in the community to whom we provide services. Not to mention our fantastic employees and volunteers. We can all work and learn together to reduce our environmental footprint. Your ideas and actions, no matter how big or small, can make a difference.

A little bit about us Anglican Care was established by the Anglican Church of Newcastle over 60 years ago. Our first village, C A Brown Village, was built in Booragul, by the shores of Lake Macquarie. Today, Anglican Care homes, villages and home care services are located across the Hunter, Central Coast and Mid Coast. Our definition of sustainability Sustainability means meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. For Anglican Care, that means actively seeking ways to minimise unsustainable practices for the benefit of our environment, our community and the future of our organisation.

Why sustainability matters There is now a strong awareness in the community about the need to take positive action on the environmental issues that confront the world. These issues are very much front and centre in the minds of most people. In fact, you’ve probably had the conversation around your own family dinner table; “What can we do?”. That same conversation has taken place in our boardroom. This Strategy Report is an outcome of that conversation, outlining the steps we’ve taken so far and will continue to take on our journey towards a sustainable future.
The business case for sustainability While our commitment to sustainability is in part a moral decision, it also makes sound business sense. Reducing waste and consumption of resources, introducing ethical procurement practices and encouraging our suppliers, residents, consumers and employees to be a part of our journey will have a direct, positive impact on the long-term future of our organisation. It also sends a clear signal to the aged care sector, other industries and the broader community that we recognise the power of working together to make a difference. Our drive towards a sustainable future will become an important point of difference for our organisation, giving like-minded consumers another compelling reason to choose Anglican Care. 6

We’re part of a global solution In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly set out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of their Resolution 70/1, ‘Transforming our world – the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.’

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals The SDGs are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, and recognise that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection.

A vital part of the journey so far has been our participation in the Sustainability Advantage Program, instigated by the New South Wales Government’s Department of Planning, Industry and Environment. This program enabled us to evaluate which of the goals we could successfully integrate into our current practices. As a result, we have identified the above eight SDGs to which we can make meaningful contributions. These goals provide a clear framework for measuring our performance in the social responsibility space and have now been incorporated into Anglican Care’s business model via our Corporate Operating Plan - Sustainability Initiatives. Sustainability is now firmly a part of Anglican Care’s agenda for the future.
Our four areas of focus are ... Our selected SDGs will be applied in following four key areas 1. Resource efficiency – Reducing electricity, gas and water usage to preserve our resources. 2. Waste reduction – Diverting organic green waste from landfill and recycling general waste where applicable. 3. Supply chain integrity – Increase sustainability of our suppliers’ services and promote sustainable and ethical practices within the procurement and supply chain. 4. People engagement – Develop awareness among our employees, residents, consumers and communities of the need to work toward positive change, and to become an employer of choice.

How are we becoming more sustainable? The first step in our journey towards sustainability was to understand and measure our current performance in the four key areas. To do this, we engaged an enthusiastic group of team members from across the organisation who were keen to be actively involved in this important project. They assisted in the vital process of collecting and documenting detailed data on resource usage, food waste, supply chain efficiency and other relevant operational areas. This data was then analysed by the team of sustainability consultants from the 'Advantage Program' run by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, who were working closely with us on this project. With their expert guidance, we were able to set practical, achievable sustainability targets for the whole organisation. The following 2022 Sustainability Targets were set against 2018 baseline figures.

Resource Efficiency 2022 TARGETS
ACTIONS & PROGRESS Water Working closely with local water authorities and councils on effective water reduction initiatives. This includes the Smart Metering Program, which captures water usage data across all our sites, helping us to identify potential water leaks. We are also installing data loggers and sub metering in selected locations. PROGRESS RESULTS As of 1 December 2019 data loggers are in place at our Hospitality Services site (Boolaroo) and Carey Bay Residential Aged Care Home. As of 2018, the introduction of newer water efficient appliances and equipment, such as dishwashers, washing machines, efficient taps and showerheads became part of our procurement strategy.
Energy Solar Photovoltaic Systems installed across numerous facilities, with more to come. PROGRESS RESULTS As of 1 December 2019, solar systems have been installed in six of our 12 residential aged care homes as well as our Hospitality Services building. These include Bishop Tyrrell Place, Storm Village, Cedar Wharf Lodge, Scenic Lodge, Jesmond Grove and Kilpatrick Court.
LED lighting upgrades in facilities. PROGRESS RESULTS As of 1 December 2019, five of our 12 residential aged care homes have been upgraded. These include McIntosh Court, Toronto Nursing Home, Cedar Wharf Lodge, Bishop Tyrrell Place, Storm Village and Jesmond Grove.
HVAC systems with high energy star ratings, and energy efficient hot water systems to be installed throughout homes and retirement living villas. PROGRESS RESULTS New energy efficient systems are being used to replace old systems as required.

• Reduce annual water consumption with the addition of data loggers at all sites. • Reduce annual consumption of electricity and gas by 10%. • Reduce fleet fuel consumption by 10%.
Waste Reduction 2022 TARGETS • Increase waste diversion from landfill through recycling by 10%. • Reduce overall volume of waste by 10% (including diversion

of organic green waste from landfill).
ACTIONS & PROGRESS Selected by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) to take part in the full Bin Trim program across our Hunter sites aimed at monitoring and reducing general waste. The program concluded in November 2018. Implementation of recommendations commenced in December 2018. Participation in the Love Food Hate Waste Pilot Program with EPA, a pilot program aimed at reducing organic food waste in residential homes. The program concluded in June 2019. PROGRESS RESULTS 543,000kgs diverted from landfill.
As of August 2018 we are converting our organic green waste, collected from our Hunter sites, to mulch for use on farms in the Hunter Valley. Working with local schools on sustainability initiatives such as the collection of toothbrushes to be used in the manufacture of recycled furniture. During August 2019 we were asked by Newcastle High School to assist them with the 'Colgate Community Garden Challenge'. PROGRESS RESULTS Approximately 600 toothbrushes were collected from our residential aged care homes and recycled. Newcastle High School won the Colgate competition and were awarded a $6,000 Gardening Package.
Supply Chain Integrity 2022 TARGETS
ACTIONS & PROGRESS Procurement strategies are now being implemented for suppliers of meat, seafood, dairy and milk products to ensure they are sustainably sourced. With the introduction of the recently legislated Modern Slavery Act 2018, Anglican Care formed part of the aged care sector within the Sustainability Advantage Program and Aged & Community Services Australia (ACSA) to analyse and implement the new processes.

• All suppliers, where practicable, are to work towards meeting Anglican Care’s Sustainability Policy criteria. • Through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and procurement, promote sustainable and ethical practices within procurement and supply chain.
People Engagement

2022 TARGETS • Maintain a family and community friendly organisation. • Create awareness of, and encourage participation in, all aspects of social, economic and environmental sustainability across the Anglican Care workforce, our residents and consumers. • Be recognised as an employer of choice for our support of a sustainable work-life balance. ACTIONS & PROGRESS Anglican Care Green Day is an annual event held across Anglican Care sites to help engage employees, residents, consumers and families in our sustainability mission. Our first Green Day was a huge success, held on 27th June 2019. Our next Green Day will coincide with World Environment Day, held on the 5th June, 2020. Sustainability Champions are a team of motivated employees from across the organisation who play an active front-line role in planning and implementing initiatives. The team was formed in August 2018. These champions meet via workshops within the Sustainability Advantage Programs a minimum of twice per annum. Ongoing awareness programs - providing feedback and practical steps that all of our residents, consumers and employees can take to help drive sustainable change both at work and at home. Sustainability Hotline has been developed to allow ideas and suggestions to be sent directly to our Sustainability Team via email and our website. Feedback from employees is also captured via future QPS surveys, the next taking place in November 2019. Our NEW Sustainability Matters Video, produced in November 2019, and Presentation is now part of our new employee Orientation Program.
Infrastructure Homes, Villages & Infrastructure 2022 TARGETS • The design of all future Anglican Care homes/villages and significant refurbishments of current facilities encompasses sustainability initiatives.

ACTIONS & PROGRESS New developments such as C A Brown Lodge at Booragul will have solar panels fitted (post completion of Construction Contract). Building materials, including insulation have been selected to support sustainable practices and assist with minimal use of cooling/heating devices along with LED lighting throughout.
Chemical Reduction 2022 TARGETS • Reduce the use of chemicals used to sanitise and clean our residential aged care homes. ACTIONS & PROGRESS The commencement of the introduction of Tersano Stabilised Aqueous Ozone (SAO™) cleaning products has commenced. This non-chemical solution will be rolled out across the organisation for cleaning and sanitising back of house, front of house and kitchen areas in conjunction with microfibre from January 2020.

Our next steps Deb Matthews, our Sustainability Champion outlines Anglican Care's future plans. Every journey begins with a first step. Anglican Care has taken that step by embracing sustainability as part of our culture of care. We know what we want to achieve and are already making good progress towards our goal of full sustainability. But we also know this will be an ongoing process that requires real commitment to achieve success. Our 2022 Targets, set in 2018, are due to be reviewed at our upcoming Strategic Planning Meeting to be held early 2020. At that time we will report our progress across each of the eight selected SDGs. This meeting will also set our NEW 2025 targets. Your participation matters. It’s very clear that the health of our environment requires urgent, consistent action. Now more than ever, we need to think globally and act locally. As an organisation, Anglican Care has made the decision that taking action towards sustainability is no longer optional – it is the only realistic choice. As a valued Anglican Care employee, volunteer, resident or consumer, we invite you to make that choice, too. We all want to make a real difference, and by embracing, practicing and sharing sustainable thinking in your workplace and in your home, you can do just that.
