NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK 2018
Great to see our staff participating in Paddlefest and the Dementia Australia Memory Walk and Jog. Both great community events. Our staff from the Mid Coast region will be participating in the Taree Walk and Jog on 24 June.
Our fantastic volunteers enjoyed our recent National Volunteer Week events which were held during May. There are not enough words to describe how grateful we are for your ongoing dedication, compassion and generosity! A huge thanks to our Hunter Auxiliary that provided the catering for the Hunter/Central Coast event. We recently received our Volunteer Vests. These vests were purchased following feedback from residents, family members, volunteers and staff that it would be great if our volunteers were more easily recognised. Hospitality Services Our hospitality team bids farewell to our Booragul facilities with the NEW Hospitality Services building at Boolaroo now up and functioning! The new building will provide a high quality, best practice food and laundry service to our residents. As part of our goal to become a leader in the provision of food services, we recently welcomed a NEW Executive Chef to our organisation, Aaron Campbell. With over 20 years hospitality experience, most recently working with the Wests Group at Cardiff, Aaron will be primarily responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the production kitchen. He will also work outside of the kitchen developing new recipes, planning menus and training staff at our residential homes and cafés.

HARMONY DAY Bishop Tyrrell Place was a sea of orange while enjoying Harmony Day this year. Our event was all about celebrating the diversity in our ageing community and everything that makes our residents the wonderfully unique people they are. So how did our residents and staff spend the day? Enjoying lots of yummy Italian food of course, pizza, garlic bread and panacotta for dessert! We also had a great line up of entertainment and guest speakers talking about cultural issues throughout the day. We loved the theme for this year’s celebrations ‘Everyone Belongs’.

Our CEO’s message to you Welcome to the Winter issue of our Reflections Newsletter. As I write this message it is the most beautiful autumn day, I think we’ll all be shocked this year when the cold weather finally arrives. I had the great pleasure of officially opening our 4th Annual Seniors Olympics last month. With approximately 160 people in attendance, this event gets bigger and better every year. It is such a joy to watch our residents and consumers having so much fun – which is what we’re all about – making ‘every moment matter’ for the people we are privileged to provide care and support to. Which is why it can be really upsetting to see the negative stories about aged care that are often reported in the media.
WHO ARE WE? Anglican Care is dedicated to enhancing the lifestyles of seniors by providing exceptional Residential Aged Care, Retirement Living, and Community and Home Care services to the Newcastle, Central Coast and Mid Coast regions.
We love to receive feedback, good and bad, and value your suggestions, comments and concerns. Knowing what works and what doesn’t helps us to actively make improvements to the services we provide. We have recently introduced an Expert Internal Review Team to ensure the best resolution is obtained from our customer feedback. This team consists of Senior Anglican Care staff. An Expert Internal Review can be requested by a customer with unresolved feedback or a Manager.

The installation of surveillance cameras (CCTV) at all of our Residential Aged Care Homes in 2018. This will assist in ensuring safety, preventing theft and vandalism of property and assist with any incidents that require investigation. Cameras will be operational 24/7 and mounted to cover main entry and exit points along with main internal crossover points. The introduction of a Drug and Alcohol Policy which prohibits our employees from working or conducting company business under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The policy aims to reduce the risks in the workplace that may arise from the use or abuse of alcohol and/or drugs. It includes pre-employment and random drug and alcohol tests, and testing if there are reasonable grounds to do so.
We also offers free flu vaccinations for our staff and have done for several years. Additionally we employ a dedicated Immunisation Co-ordinator. On other news, I am excited to announce that Anglican Care has recently signed a contract with Core Project Group to undertake the construction of C A Brown at Booragul. The new residential aged care home consists of 126 single rooms with ensuites and includes a café, alfresco dining area and Day Centre. Work commenced during the week of 16 April with contractors setting up the construction site. Significant dates are as follows: • • •
Demolition commencement – early/mid May 2018 Construction commencement – August 2018 Completion anticipated – early 2020.
But what if you do get to the point where you or a loved one need a greater level of care or daily living assistance? What can you expect when you move into a nursing home – or as they are more commonly referred to these days – a residential aged care home?

We often hear seniors say “I never want to end up in a Nursing Home” and there are certainly a number of stereotypes surrounding them. Naturally, the majority of people want to remain living in their own homes for the entirety of their lives.
Anglican Care is the Aged Care Ministry of the Anglican Church of Newcastle.
As a values based organisation we try very hard to provide an excellent service - we accept that things aren’t always perfect, but when they do go wrong we pull out all stops to make it right. Sometimes there can be a mismatch between what the community expects aged care providers to deliver, and what we are funded to deliver. An interesting comparison is that the maximum amount an aged care provider receives to look after a resident in a residential aged care home per day is $260. Hospitals receive an average of $1,900 a day to look after a hospital patient.
Other measures we are introducing to ensure the safety of our residents, consumers, staff, volunteers and visitors are outlined below:
NURSING HOMES & STEREOTYPES
Let’s dispel some of those negative connotations. Over the past 5-10 years, the majority of aged care providers have moved away from a shared room/shared bathroom environment to single rooms with ensuites. That’s great news for the privacy of residents, families and visitors. Whilst we are talking about visitors, in most homes they are encouraged to visit residents whenever they can. No set visiting hours. Many modern aged care homes are architecturally designed with stylish interiors and furnishings. Residents at these newer homes receive services such as high-quality meals, onsite laundry and cleaning.

On a final note, congratulations to the staff of Warnervale Gardens who successfully undertook a full accreditation visit by the Australian Aged Care Quality Agency, meeting all 44 outcomes. Assessors commented that are staff were skilled, professional and friendly and that the home was well managed with lifestyle programs designed to meet the needs of our residents. An outstanding result.

Gavin Morris returned to share the fun of our Hunter and Central Coast Senior Olympics held during April at Club Macquarie. We also held our very first event in the Mid Coast this year, the very same week, which was a great success. “Our annual Seniors Olympics is a highlight in many of the residents’ and consumers calendars. The Olympics are an opportunity for our residents to participate in physical activities as well as have some fun and laughter. Participants are already keen for next year’s games!” said Kylie Jacques, Marketing Manager. A special thanks goes to Gavin Morris, Chrys Banning, our devoted Lifestyle & Wellbeing staff and the incredible volunteers for making our Olympics so special.

BISHOP TYRRELL ANGLICAN COLLEGE iTEA We have a fantastic new program running this year with Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College called ‘iTea’. Year 11 Information and Digital Technology students are assisting our residents in learning some new IT skills!

We recently welcomed a new Chairman to Anglican Care, Malcolm McDonald. Malcolm is very familiar with our organisation as a serving Board Member from 2003 – 2016 and as the Chairperson of our Audit & Risk Committee. He has many years of experience in the corporate sector, including several other Directorships and memberships with Hunter based organisations. Bringing his drive and energy to the role, Malcolm will provide outstanding leadership and strong governance to our organisation. Malcolm will have many opportunities to meet with our residents, consumers, staff and volunteers over the upcoming months and years. One of his first official functions will be the ‘Turning of the Sod’ prior to the commencement of construction of C A Brown.
We are all living longer and that has meant a great change in the average age of seniors in care, nowadays they are more likely to be in their 80’s and 90’s. Generally these residents have fairly high care needs, therefore modern day residential homes have the benefits of highly skilled nursing staff, the very best level of clinical care and in some cases, dementia specific wings and therapies, even hair salons.
Following the training session the Year 10 Food Technology Students made and served a wonderful afternoon tea! On other news, I am excited to announce that Anglican Care has recently signed a contract with Core Project Group to undertake the construction of C A Brown at Booragul. The new residential aged care home consists of 126 single rooms with ensuites and includes a café, alfresco dining area and Day Centre. Work commenced during the week of 16 April with contractors setting up the construction site. Significant dates are as follows: • • •
Demolition commencement – early/mid May 2018 Construction commencement – August 2018 Completion anticipated – early 2020.
But what if you do get to the point where you or a loved one need a greater level of care or daily living assistance? What can you expect when you move into a nursing home – or as they are more commonly referred to these days – a residential aged care home?

We often hear seniors say “I never want to end up in a Nursing Home” and there are certainly a number of stereotypes surrounding them. Naturally, the majority of people want to remain living in their own homes for the entirety of their lives.
Anglican Care is the Aged Care Ministry of the Anglican Church of Newcastle.
As a values based organisation we try very hard to provide an excellent service - we accept that things aren’t always perfect, but when they do go wrong we pull out all stops to make it right. Sometimes there can be a mismatch between what the community expects aged care providers to deliver, and what we are funded to deliver. An interesting comparison is that the maximum amount an aged care provider receives to look after a resident in a residential aged care home per day is $260. Hospitals receive an average of $1,900 a day to look after a hospital patient.
Other measures we are introducing to ensure the safety of our residents, consumers, staff, volunteers and visitors are outlined below:
NURSING HOMES & STEREOTYPES
Let’s dispel some of those negative connotations. Over the past 5-10 years, the majority of aged care providers have moved away from a shared room/shared bathroom environment to single rooms with ensuites. That’s great news for the privacy of residents, families and visitors. Whilst we are talking about visitors, in most homes they are encouraged to visit residents whenever they can. No set visiting hours. Many modern aged care homes are architecturally designed with stylish interiors and furnishings. Residents at these newer homes receive services such as high-quality meals, onsite laundry and cleaning.

An outstanding result.

Gavin Morris returned to share the fun of our Hunter and Central Coast Senior Olympics held during April at Club Macquarie. We also held our very first event in the Mid Coast this year, the very same week, which was a great success. “Our annual Seniors Olympics is a highlight in many of the residents’ and consumers calendars. The Olympics are an opportunity for our residents to participate in physical activities as well as have some fun and laughter. Participants are already keen for next year’s games!” said Kylie Jacques, Marketing Manager. A special thanks goes to Gavin Morris, Chrys Banning, our devoted Lifestyle & Wellbeing staff and the incredible volunteers for making our Olympics so special.

BISHOP TYRRELL ANGLICAN COLLEGE iTEA We have a fantastic new program running this year with Bishop Tyrrell Anglican College called ‘iTea’. Year 11 Information and Digital Technology students are assisting our residents in learning some new IT skills!

We recently welcomed a new Chairman to Anglican Care, Malcolm McDonald. Malcolm is very familiar with our organisation as a serving Board Member from 2003 – 2016 and as the Chairperson of our Audit & Risk Committee. He has many years of experience in the corporate sector, including several other Directorships and memberships with Hunter based organisations. Bringing his drive and energy to the role, Malcolm will provide outstanding leadership and strong governance to our organisation. Malcolm will have many opportunities to meet with our residents, consumers, staff and volunteers over the upcoming months and years. One of his first official functions will be the ‘Turning of the Sod’ prior to the commencement of construction of C A Brown.
We are all living longer and that has meant a great change in the average age of seniors in care, nowadays they are more likely to be in their 80’s and 90’s. Generally these residents have fairly high care needs, therefore modern day residential homes have the benefits of highly skilled nursing staff, the very best level of clinical care and in some cases, dementia specific wings and therapies, even hair salons.
Following the training session the Year 10 Food Technology Students made and served a wonderful afternoon tea! Great to see our staff participating in Paddlefest and the Dementia Australia Memory Walk and Jog. Both great community events. Our staff from the Mid Coast region will be participating in the Taree Walk and Jog on 24 June.
Our fantastic volunteers enjoyed our recent National Volunteer Week events which were held during May. There are not enough words to describe how grateful we are for your ongoing dedication, compassion and generosity! A huge thanks to our Hunter Auxiliary that provided the catering for the Hunter/Central Coast event. We recently received our Volunteer Vests. These vests were purchased following feedback from residents, family members, volunteers and staff that it would be great if our volunteers were more easily recognised. Hospitality Services Our hospitality team bids farewell to our Booragul facilities with the NEW Hospitality Services building at Boolaroo now up and functioning! The new building will provide a high quality, best practice food and laundry service to our residents. As part of our goal to become a leader in the provision of food services, we recently welcomed a NEW Executive Chef to our organisation, Aaron Campbell. With over 20 years hospitality experience, most recently working with the Wests Group at Cardiff, Aaron will be primarily responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the production kitchen. He will also work outside of the kitchen developing new recipes, planning menus and training staff at our residential homes and cafés.
