Need a gift for someone born in March or April? Why not surprise them with one of the biggest trends around – antique
If your loved one has a birthday this spring then, take it from me, they are bang on trend – gem wise that it. Antique jewellery is no longer a niche interest reserved for collectors and specialists. From the pages of the style magazines to vintage fairs, historic pieces are enjoying an unprecedented revival.
None more so than aquamarine –March’s birthstone –and April’s birthstone of a diamond
In fact our salerooms are teeming with buyers as pieces achieve spiralling amounts. It is, as ever, the Gen-Zs fuelling the boom.

A square cut aquamarine dress ring was valued at £300 at a recent valuation day, all images courtesy of Hansons Auctioneers

A diamond and 18ct gold ring, comprising an antique cushion cut diamond, sold for £750
That generation is leading the move away from fast fashion and disposable luxury with their goals ideally met in antique jewellery. And where Gen-Z lead, us Gen-Xs and Boomers follow.
When it comes to diamonds one of the most striking trends comes from a cultural icon, who revered like a goddess among the under 30s.
I am of course talking about the pop legend Taylor Swift.
In the past, engagement rings, were made to be worn every day, with enormous gems typically reserved for special occasions such as cocktail rings. Not anymore – big stones are back when popping the question.
So it is no surprise more and more couples are opting for aquamarine – March’s birthstone – as a unique engagement ring, or statement piece. It merges the Latin words for water (aqua) and “of the sea” (marina) and is connected to the ocean.

Big is beautiful – this topaz and diamond set 18ct white gold ring sold for £220 at one of Hansons’ salerooms

An aquamarine and 18ct white gold pendant recently sold at one of Hansons’ salerooms for £2,400
After Travis Kelce proposed to the US singer with an old mine-cut diamond ring, it sparked a whole new trend in the saleroom. Out were the modern machine-cut solitaires, in favour of something approaching the giant 10 carat stone now residing on Swift’s ring finger.
Stunning in every way, it would have been hand carved at the old mine where it was discovered (hence the name) likely 200 years ago in either India or Brazil. Shimmering with history, it was designed to look perfect for sparkling in Georgian candlelight.
Ancient Romans believed aquamarine could protect people travelling across the sea. It’s also a symbol of youth and happiness. Its value is determined by its weight, colour, cut and clarity. Because of the trend for calming “baby blue” colours, its versatility in both minimalist and bold designs, and its status as a timeless, romantic alternative to diamonds.
If you have a piece of jewellery you would like our experts to value, we have two free pop-in session in Cheshire on April 14.
The first, from 9.30am-11.30am, is at the Pavilion By Francs, Hale, Altrincham; with an afternoon valuation from 1pm-3pm at St Johns Knutsford Church Centre, Church Hill in Knutsford.

Gardens can play a vital role in supporting wildlife, particularly in suburban and urban areas where natural habitats are increasingly fragmented. By choosing the right plants and adopting a more relaxed approach to garden maintenance, it is possible to create a space that benefits birds, insects, and small mammals throughout the year.

harmful to wildlife. Leaving areas of the garden a little messy can make a huge difference. Fallen leaves and decaying plant matter help insulate the soil, protecting roots from frost during winter. As they break down, they also add natural nutrients, improving soil health and creating leaf mould that benefits plants in the long term.

One of the most effective ways to encourage wildlife is through planting shrubs and trees that provide food and shelter. Shrubs such as Cotoneaster, Pyracantha and Ilex (holly) are excellent choices, as they produce berries that many birds rely on, especially during the colder months. Similarly, small berrying trees like Crataegus (hawthorn) and Sorbus (rowan) are invaluable. These trees not only provide fruit but also offer nesting sites and protection from predators. Importantly, many of these plants hold onto their berries through winter and into early spring, when food is scarce and birds are most vulnerable.
In my own garden here in suburban Stockport, I have seen first-hand how planting with wildlife in mind can transform a garden. Each spring, a wide variety of birds visit, including sparrows, thrushes and blackbirds. Smaller birds are particularly attracted to the blossom of hawthorn and rowan. In May, it is a joy to watch blue tits and robins flitting through the branches, pecking at the flowers and feeding on the insects they attract. These moments are a reminder that gardens are not just decorative spaces, but living ecosystems.
Beyond planting, how we manage our gardens is just as important. Modern gardening often encourages tidiness, cutting back plants early, clearing fallen leaves, and removing dead growth. While this may look neat, it can be
A few years ago, I noticed something unusual in my garden during autumn. Leaves seemed to be moving and gathering in a corner beneath a woody tree. At first, I assumed the wind was responsible. It wasn’t until spring that I discovered the true cause: a hedgehog had collected the leaves and dry litter to build a winter nest. Since then, by continuing to leave parts of the garden undisturbed, we have been rewarded with a growing hedgehog population. Three years on, we now have a family of three hedgehogs, with successive years of hoglets, a wonderful sign that the garden is providing what they need.
Encouraging wildlife does not require large spaces or expensive changes. Even small gardens can make a difference with thoughtful planting and a willingness to let nature take the lead. By choosing berry-bearing shrubs and trees, allowing plants to flower, and resisting the urge to over-tidy, gardeners can create havens for wildlife while enjoying a richer, more vibrant garden themselves.
Sometimes, the simplest acts, planting a tree or leaving a pile of leaves, can have the greatest impact.
Happy Gardening!

If you take a country walk down Newgate in Wilmslow, you’re likely to pass a lovely community of rescue animals tucked away in the back lanes.
The Wilmslow Animal Sanctuary – also known as the Humane Education Society - has been in existence for around half a century, caring for animals who have fallen on hard times.

Being small, local & independent, we rely wholly on fundraising, donations & legacies. Our team work hard to put on regular events, and to think of new and innovative ways to raise funds, however, fundraising has become more challenging over the last few years, and costs have skyrocketed. Between 2022-2024 annual costs have increased by £50k. We are therefore always looking for additional support from our community.

Each year the Sanctuary takes in around 200 animals. The majority of these are cats (40-60 cats/ kittens on-site), but we also take in Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Ferrets, Ducks, Chickens, Horses, Ponies, Donkeys & Gilbert the pig – who all enjoy the safety and security of our care until we can find them their forever home.

How can you help us?
n Attend our events
n Buy much needed supplies via our ‘Amazon Wish List’ (refer to website)
n Donate as a one-off payment, or ‘Become A Friend’ for regular donations (refer to website)
n Fundraise for us
n Think of us when you make your Will
n Volunteer
Some animals who come to us cannot be rehomed; these animals live out their natural lives at the Sanctuary, well cared for, much loved, safe and secure.
The Humane Education Society also provides education in the humane treatment of animals. We strongly believe that educating young people in animal care and welfare creates a more compassionate attitude towards all animals. We therefore provide work experience placements for students from colleges/ universities, and we host group visits from schools and Brownie groups so they can meet our animals and learn about their care.
We would love to welcome you to our events this year:
n Easter Eggstravaganza - Sunday 29th March, 12:00 – 3:00pm
n Family Fun Day – Sunday 7th June, 12:00 – 4:00pm
n Afternoon Tea - Sunday 2nd August
n Autumn Fair - Sunday 27th September, 12:00 – 3:00pm
All events are held on-site at Newgate, Wilmslow, SK9 5LN. You can find out more about us on our website, www.heswilmslow.co.uk, or by following us on Facebook, Instagram or X.

January often feels like the longest month of the year… and it never quite delivers the transformational change that society expects.
New Year’s resolutions may as well be written on pre shredded paper, to save everyone the bother of disposing of them once they fail.

So, once February arrives; the gym memberships have gone unused, the restrictive diets have fallen apart, the resolutions have failed and thankfully, people have stopped taking about the pointless 3 day fast they’ve just done.
So don’t worry if your year is not going to plan so far… you are not alone.
The New Year’s resolution circus is nothing but arbitrary calendar pressure, destined to fail. We will make changes when we are ready to make them and that could be on any day of any year of our life.
All that being said, it is clear to me that February and March can make change more likely to stick. The days are stretching longer, there’s a subtle shift in energy, new life is starting to appear and there’s far less pressure upon us than in January.
Humans don’t need perfect conditions to make changes of course, we’re sophisticated enough to run in winter, eat nutritious food all year-round, and commit to better sleep regardless of the season. But there is no doubt, as the months roll by it gets easier.
The key cornerstones of good health are physical fitness, nutrition, sleep, and mental health and they are all interconnected. Once we start to address them collectively and in a sustainable way, we get to enjoy the synergies that emerge. Here’s What You Can Do
n Morning daylight exposure - Get outside within 30 minutes of waking, even for five minutes. Natural light regulates your circadian rhythm, improving both alertness during the day and sleep quality at night.
n Move your bodyThree 10-minute bursts woven into your day beats the hour-long gym session you keep postponing. Take the stairs, walk during lunch, do press-ups or squats in your office, it all adds up.
n Sleep effectively - There are many sleep tips on my website www.niosleep. com, so please go and read them. We need 7-9 hours a night and it’s non negotiable for mood, energy and cognitive function. Establish a sleep routine that works for you and then build your life around it.
n Protein with every meal – This stabilises blood sugar, reduces cravings, and supports recovery. Aim for 25-30g per meal as a minimum and 1-2g per day per kilo of body weight.
n Adequate hydration – Most people operate chronically dehydrated. Two litres per day is the average we need. Poor hydration mimics fatigue and impedes mental clarity.
n Stop making excuses! It’s not too cold for salad. It’s not too dark to exercise. It’s not the wrong season to start. These are stories we tell ourselves to avoid taking action.
There is never a totally “right time”, and the perfect conditions for change may never arrive, but Spring is about as good as it gets.
So now that you have read this, make yourself a plan and stick to it, with the objective being that you never need to “start all over “ever again.

Did you know that nearly four in 10 people (39%) avoid visiting relatives living with dementia because of how difficult it can be to communicate and connect * ?
Dementia can change the way someone communicates. Messages in the brain may take longer to reach the right place, which can make conversations more challenging.
As dementia progresses, families and friends may feel unsure how to stay connected. In a national survey, nearly all respondents (93%) said communication barriers made meaningful interaction harder, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Understanding why communication becomes more challenging is the fi rst step in remaining connected with your loved one.

My love for colour, pattern and strong design can be used in many styles, but the Mid Century furniture and design is, perhaps, my favourite. When I had my furniture and interiors store in Belfast, I always had plenty of furniture and accessories showcasing how these beautiful designer shapes worked in a home.
The big glass ball light you see over the dining table here is a classic Verner Panton light, not cheap, but wow what a statement. This was a light I stocked in my store, pleasing Northern Ireland’s interior lovers who could see it in real life, not just on the internet. Not everything needs to be Mid Century in style when putting a room together to achieve the look. It blends well with more modern furniture, giving a nod to the retro style. The child’s bedroom pictured here has been carefully put together with the beautiful drawer unit being the only Mid Century piece. The bed would work well in this style also, a wooden headboard in the same wood finish and these aren’t difficult to find, places like Habitat offer lots in this style.

I love the master bedroom here with all the vibrant colours and the shaped headboard, which wouldn’t look out of place in a completely differently designed room. If the colours are too bold for your taste it would work just as well with the tones muted down, plainer bedside tables, still unmatched, and a lighter wall to the right. The carefully sourced art is perfectly scaled and matches the fun vibe of the room. The rug is fantastic with colour tying in – imagine a neutral or cream rug here, it would clash and look completely out of place. This room looks like a happy place. For tips and
tricks, follow me on Instagram. If you’d love me to help you, please do get in touch.
Sharon.

Combining core strength, balance and coordination with an energetic cardiovascular element HIP Pilates is the answer to many people’s search for a functional ‘feel good’ workout.

Pilates exercises will help you develop a strong “core,” or center of the body. The core consists of the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine. Pilates improves flexibility and increases muscle strength and tone, it also improves concentration, body awareness and stress management. Arguably the most important health benefit received from Pilates is all about good posture and the calming self-confidence boost that comes with it. What Pilates classes are there?
The most popular form of Pilates is matwork. Matwork is a more traditional form of Pilates, which as it has been developed has incorporated the use of equipment such as balls, stretch bands, foam rollers or magic circles.
